[RBW] Second Annual Birthday Ride
As I approach 70 (10/15) I am no longer looking for mountains to climb, neither in life nor on the bike. But once a year, I pull myself together, square off with a brute and conquer it. So yesterday, I did my now annual (two years in a row) ride up to Smugglers Notch. I took the Rambouillet but wasn’t sure it’s low double gearing (30/28) would be enough, but it was. When I got the Ram, (Sept of 2004 or 5) my first ride was an 80 mile trip to the top of the Appalachian Gap, a beast of a climb with a fair stretch of 22% grade at the top. I wanted to celebrate this year with the Ram, again. This climb goes up about 1700 feet in about 4 miles. The first mile climbs 400 feet, then there's a couple of miles of 1-2% grade before the last three miles, which gain about 1100 feet. I always stop at the entrance to Smugglers Notch Ski resort, which is just before the last three mile push, for a brief rest water and then I stop again about 1 1/2 mile later where it briefly flattens out. Take on air and water. But this time I had to stop about a half mile or so before the top to catch my breath, lower my heart rate, and rest my legs. I wondered if a 24/27 wouldn't have required that stop. That’s just before the final 12% up to the top. About this time I forgot two very important things. Why the hell I was doing this and which of the dam turns was the last one before the top. But I made it. Shouldn't have done this on a Sunday, too much traffic, but life has been very busy. Took it easy on the way down, just sat up and coasted at 40 or so. I feel pretty good now on Monday morning. Re: [RBW] Re: Cockpit Swappers Anonymous
Also - Went on a decently longish test ride last night and I have determined that I am just an albatross bar man. I have to throw my preconceived notions of what a road bike looks like out the window and realize that I'm happier and more comfortable on Albatross bars. I don't really have a speed penalty either, as I am plenty fast enough on my albas, but may be *feel* as fast.. maybe I equate my discomfort with speed, because I used to ride bikes that were plenty fast yet uncomfortable. I just ordered these http://store.somafab.com/diacodchareb.htmlto try and give me that on the hoods position with the albas for when I really want to stretch out and go fast. I know it says 23.8mm clamp, but I'm figuring I can make it work with the albas. I'm also wondering if a 14cm stem, vs the 12cm I've got on on there would give me an even better balance of being able to get upright, while also being able to stretch out and get low(ish) into a headwind. Or maybe I just put the knobs on there and lower the stem a tad. Thanks for listening/reading! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Shifting a Rohloff from the stem
Andrew, I haven't tried this but I am surprised that folks run anything other than the Cane Creek or the Bertoud setup. I run my Rohloff on a flat handlebar and takes quite a bit of twisting force to shift. If I had to take my hands off the bars, I'd probably be wobbling all over the place. Of course, my Rohloff bike is more of a trail bike which makes that problem worse. You can always try it and change it later. It looks like the stem-mounted setup won't cost you much if anything extra. Ginz -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Adding Dia Compe hand rests on other three types makes climbing much easier though. I think Boscos look best when on bikes with fatter tires. BOM by Brian https://www.rivbike.com/product-p/staff18.htm on Riv website looks awesome. On longer rides, Albas and Boscos are not as comfortable as I have expected. Not only my buttocks become sore, but also my hands become numb. It's somewhat surprising, since I have expected that being upright takes stresses away from my hands. I still like both of them because riding upright allows me to look at sceneries more. Also, descending not-so-bumpy roads is more fun with upright bars. Bullmoose is much comfortable than I assumed. I bought it for relatively short, rough-terrain rides. I haven't done really long rides with it, but I think I can do them. [RBW] Re: Shifting a Rohloff from the stem
Andrew, Some years ago I ran a Rohloff on my Hilsen and tried both the Hubbub (#2) and the bar-end for quill stem (#11). I preferred the bar-end method. I don't use the drops that much, so the quill was much closer to my hand. It's also less expensive and would be a good place to start since, as you point out it doesn't interfere with your experimentation with bars and brake levers. Another thing that the writer does not mention about the Hubbub is that it slips into the end of your bar and extends the length by several inches, so you really need to saw off a piece of your bar end. If you decide to go the Hubbub route, PM me and I'll see if I can still find my old one for you. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Toddlers, Kids, Urban Transport, and your Riv
Hi Jay, I've used a couple rear child seats on my Sam H without much trouble, and I do like the Yepp Maxi. Lifting my leg over the top tube did take getting used to, and I made the mistake once of forgetting about the child seat, trying to swing my leg over the saddle, kicking my kid in the head and almost crashing in the process. Not a mistake I'll make again! :) But really, other than remembering that I have to, lifting a leg over the top tube really isn't a big deal for me. I'd suggest finding someone to borrow a rear seat from locally and just try it out and see how it is for you. Luggage is the bigger problem: you probably can't use panniers or a saddlebag with a rear seat. I have a small front bag on my Sam for that very reason (Acorn mini rando bag, no longer in production I think). I found the useful lifespan of the rear seat to be limited too. My older kid outgrew the Copilot we were using at about 4, and my younger one is still going strong in the yepp maxi at 3, but it clearly won't last years and years. We also use a Weehoo (a recumbent-style trail-a-bike), which both kids love. The younger one started going in it around 2 1/2. She still doesn't particularly contribute much to pedaling yet, but it's great anyway. And it does allow panniers, and also has some built-in luggage. So that may be an option to consider too. There are also getting to be tons of family-specific cargo bikes -- I love our Workcycles FR8 -- but if you're not into the xtracycle you already have, that may be less exciting. It got to be much more compelling for us when trying to carry two kids on one bike, which sounds like it's not an issue for you. But it's really cool to be able to comfortably carry two kids to school with their backpacks and lunch and my work stuff and still have plenty of room for picking up groceries or whatever else. But definitely a transport bike: it's REALLY heavy, bolt upright, doesn't go fast. -- Eli Daniel Somerville, MA On Aug 23, 2014, at 3:04 PM, 'Jay B' via RBW Owners Bunch rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com wrote: howdy folks, We’ve been super happy with the Bobike Mini front child carrier for toting around our nearly 2 year old for the last year. Combined with a large rear saddlesack and front basket on the Bleriot, Betty, or Quickbeam, we’ve got our daily urban transport needs just about covered (we just moved to Houston, and while it’s not nearly as bike-friendly as Denver, it’s proved surprisingly bike-able for our needs). Our little guy is approaching the 33 lb suggested weight limit for the Bobike, but more concerning to me is that his shoulders are now several inches above the top of the backrest of the carrier and the shoulder straps tend to work their way off his shoulders. So, I’ve been pondering our next step. I’ve considered getting a Yepp Maxi (or similar rear child carrier), and while it would work great with my wife’s Betty, I think I might get tired of throwing my leg over my already high (for me) top tubes. And I would have a hard time giving up my much used and loved large rear saddlesack. I’ve considered getting a Cheviot and setting it up similar to RBW employee Keven’s that was spotlighted on the Blug, especially if I could fit Big Bens and fenders on it (I’ve yet to reach out to Keven to see how that setup is going). I have an Xtracycle that would also work with the Yepp Maxi, but I was really hoping to let that bike go as we really don’t use it often enough. I feel I have reached the useful limit of my theoretical ponderings on the matter and could really use some real world feedback from those of you with experience. Re: [RBW] Shifting a Rohloff from the stem
Andrew, I have a custom stem that has a clamp on the underside of the stem extension, essentially like the Thorn 55mm accessory bar and the Rodriguez Doohickey. It is a clamp brazed to the underside of the extension and is mtb bar diameter. I have a scrap piece of mtb bar and the stock Rohloff shifter is on the right and my bike computer is on the left of the stem. It works just fine for road riding, riding single track it is a little more awkward then having it right by the brake. Especially if you are riding slowly over roots and tricky terrain and need to shift really often to keep up with the less fearless riders. My handle bar is a 31.8 Salsa Cowbell with Cane Creek road brake levers. It is a comfortable setup. I like the Rohloff, even if it is on the heavy side, the shifting is sublime, smooth, either static or pedaling. I'm happy with my setup. [RBW] Re: Toddlers, Kids, Urban Transport, and your Riv
Hi Everyone: Some nice kid-hauling set ups! I have my Hunqapillar set up for kid hauling (2-yo and 4-yo). Yepp Mini front seat (which I highly recommend) on albatross hbars; Burley Piccolo trail-a-bike (has its own dedicated rear rack). I also have a Burley D'Lite trailer. (I'm also an h-bar swapper... but that's a different thread.) I skipped the rear bike seat (I would have chosen the Yepp Maxi) and jumped to the trail-a-bike. (Note: I had and have a 2-child trailer already in the shed. Having it made it easier for me to forgo the rear bike seat, as I could use the 2-child trailer if/when necessary.) My son was ready for the trail-a-bike at ~3.5 yo. I could trust him to hold on and communicate, though I was extra cautious and kept an eye on him with the Riv-German mirror. I've heard of children getting sleepy while on trail-a-bikes, so I haven't taken him on long excursions on it. Initially, the saddle height couldn't be lowered enough for him to pedal, so I zipped tied the crank to the chain stay to create a platform for him to stand. I take him to school on the trail-a-bike. Of course, it's compatible with the front Yepp Mini, which I sometimes have my 2-yo. You'll have to give up your Saddlesack when using the Piccolo, but no big deal. It goes on/off quite easily. If necessary, you can attach certain panniers to the Piccolo rack while pulling the trail-a-bike. I picked up the HAR/HAB for family picnics. (Works great.) I prefer having them on the Yepp or Piccolo, but it's convenient and stable. I'm not sure how much longer my 4yo will be able to fit into it with his sister. https://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/14235538308/ On Saturday, August 23, 2014 3:04:28 PM UTC-4, Jay B wrote: howdy folks, We’ve been super happy with the Bobike Mini front child carrier for toting around our nearly 2 year old for the last year. I feel I have reached the useful limit of my theoretical ponderings on the matter and could really use some real world feedback from those of you with experience. obviously on and off, but I have been riding with my best riding buddy since 6th grade. Another h-bar swapper here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/sets/72157644332271299/ - 48cm Noodles on 10cm Nitto Lugged Stem - Albatross on 12cm Tallux Stem - Moustache (classic) on 7cm Technomic Stem - Bullmoose (not Bosco) I have them set up for my Hunqapillar with DaVinci derailler cable splitters. They each have their own brake straddle hanger (F+R) and cable stops. I have one set of bar-end shifters to swap between the Noodles and Moustache; and one set of thumbies to swap between Albatross and Bullmoose. If one-h-bar ruled them all, it would be the Noodles. I like the looks (drop-bar mountain bikes look great IMHO), the number and variety of hand positions is welcome on short and long rides. Having them on a threaded steerer is an added bonus. If I'm feeling a little off, I can easily raise it a few cms for a more comfortable position. (I usually run them with tops ~saddle height, and I use the drops+hooks/ramps/hoods ~40/40/20.) I have the albas for running my Yepp Mini front child seat. I like the albas, but I don't love them. I'd like a bit more racy position, and I think my bike might be sized a little too small for me with these bars. The moustache is comfy and looks great. There's terrific control for single track. Two disadv/dislikes-- I like a drop position when the headwinds are strong, and it interferes with the basket/shopsack I have on front rack. Bullmoose is a beautiful bar with terrific control. It is comfortable for my short 6-mile commute. It's a bit too wide for navigating the traffic, though. These are limited to short distance rides or off-road trails. I'll put them on for friends who would otherwise be intimidated by Noodles/Moustache. My SO really likes these bars. RE: Surly-- to provide my experience to Steve P.'s question: I have a Crosscheck, and my experience is similar to Avery's. The Hunqapillar, despite being much heavier (by lifting it, I haven't weighed it on a scale), is significantly faster. It feels like it wants to go, whereas I feel like I'm riding into a perpetual headwind on the CC. (CC w/JB Greens; Hunqapillar w/Big Bens. Hunqapillar w/Compass 26x1.75 is noticeably faster.) As Patrick M. has written, the Riv has a unique turn-in feel that's confidence inspiring. It's responsive but not twitchy. By contrast, the CC has lots of flop. shoji On Monday, August 25, 2014 11:20:57 AM UTC-4, Takashi wrote: Hi Avery I am happy to see another cockpit swapper! I swap handlebars very often. I'd like a bit more racy position, and* I think my bike might be sized a little too small for me with these bars.* I think this might be my experience as well, as evidenced by my musings over whether a 14cm stem and the forward knob addition would make my Albatross bars a better fit. I am right on the border (88pbh) between a 61 and a 63 AHH, and when a 61 in black/cream came up used here on the list, I jumped on it. I don't think my bike is too small overall - I don't think I could comfortably run drop bars on a 63 Hilsen, as I've already only got an 8cm Tallux on there to make it work, but if I wanted to run Albas full time, I might think about trading my 61 out for a 63. Any takers? :) I'm going to put those dia-compe knobs in the most forward position on the hooks of the albas and see if that way I can achieve handlebar nirvana - forward when I want it, but with a nice retreat to the grips when I want to sit up and look around. FWIW, I did 70 miles with albas last weekend and was not at all dissatisfied.. I'm just always looking to tinker and see if there just might be something even better out there! Re: [RBW] Re: Cockpit Swappers Anonymous
I think the albastaches and the hilsen were made for each other. I have discovered that by running them flatter than I think appropriate, it relieves a lot of the wrist pain I get from hyperextending my wrists. Part of this is because I often set my handlebars while standing on the floor over my bike, which is not at all the angle I get if I'm in the saddle. So, flatter they go. cc On Mon, Aug 25, 2014 at 12:23 PM, Avery Wilson avewil...@gmail.com wrote: I have the albas for running my Yepp Mini front child seat. I like the albas, but I don't love them. Re: [RBW] Swappin' wheelsets question...
I was thinking of doing this also because the rear wheel on my Riv has developed a bit of a wobble. So throw on the rear wheel from the Soma until I get a chance to true up the Riv wheel. Both casettes are less than three months old and both chains probably have less than 750 miles on them. Both using Shimano MTB hubs. I think it will work fine. I'll test my theory after work if I don't chicken out due to the heat. (Forecast high according to the Google Now app on my Android is 106F). Re: [RBW] Just Ride More (or maybe less)
I've been missing my rides as my bikes didn't get back from vacation until a week after I did due to me leaving my car out there and flying back. I did bike commute on my old Nishiki a couple of times but it's not the same as riding my nicer bikes. That dang old Nishiki doesn't even have braze ons for water bottles. It's Camelback or nothing. Usually I choose nothing because I'm not going far. It's got me thinking of converting my 90s MTB to 650B so I can at least take along my water bottles. It was a bit nerve wracking to know my bikes were in the care of others but anyway, they made it home safe and sound on Saturday evening.n Unfortunately had plans all day on Sunday so was not able to ride. :( On Sun, Aug 24, 2014 at 7:25 AM, Michael Hechmer mhech...@gmail.com wrote: As I wrote the subject line of this post it occurred to me that this list includes folks who are into rondenee riding and certainly don't need to be encouraged to ride more, and may even be happier riding less, but this is a post about riding more... often. I agree, Michael, that my frame of mind is tons better after a ride. I always have the best intentions to ride the ~35 hilly miles into the office once per week, but this summer I've done a crap job of it. I did manage to do it last Friday and it put me in a great mood. Looking for a similar bump, I went to the gym at lunch today. I'm glad I went and all, but going for a ride is a hundred times better. Re: [RBW] Re: Cockpit Swappers Anonymous
I think the Alba setup looked very nice, and I think that everybody should have at least one Albatross bike and at least one drop bar bike. Butthat particular drop bar setup looks wrong to me. The brakelevers are rolled too far down the drops and the bars are rotated way too far back up to compensate. The ramps and the brakelever should make one continuous flat place (as best as possible). You've got the ramps bumping up and then still have to reach over the hump to get at your brakelevers. It makes my hands and wrists hurt just looking at it. If you want to give drop bars an extended chance, I'd recommend starting over copying the Mark video for the bar/stem/levers setup. Go without handlebar tape for a while if necessary. Do everything in your power to keep that Black and While Hilsen! It's a STUNNER. Re: [RBW] Padded cycling undies vs. cycling shorts...easier leg movement?
+ 1 for no padding. I find that if my shorts, inner, and shorts, street, outer, are cut full enough -- deep in crotch and high in waist, full in thigh -- and ditto for the underlying boxers, I don't even think about padding (for up to 30 miles, anyway). Of course, slightly too tight and high within or without makes a big negative difference. Original Flites on all bikes, properly set up; 2/4 bikes fixed. I personally hate the feel of lycra shorts and thick pads and haven't used padding for years, but back when I did I would often wear them under street shorts; this would obviate the concerns you raise in your questions. This year alone I've had 2 albastaches, drops, albatross, and bosco bullmoose across three bikes. I think I've finally settled on: Hunqapillar (mtn bike setup): albastache, but really want to try Bullmoose bars, like bad) Gunnar sport: drops, after trying Albastaches, which I really really liked, I went back to drops since having 2 bikes with albastaches just didn't make sense. but now you're making me wonder if i should go albatross on those. But...I really appreciate the drops after going back and glad I have a sporty road bike with drops on them. bridgestone mb (commuter, yepp mini carrier): just went from boscos to albatross and will likely leave there. BUTnow I really want to pick my next Rivendell and build around that albatross bar, sam maybe? who knows. if anyone wants to lend me an infinite amount of money with no guarantee of payback I'll keep going with these combos and report back on them all I think my LBS has made more money off me buying cables than they could from be buying a bike or three. Re: [RBW] Re: Cockpit Swappers Anonymous
You can get a full set of Jagwire stainless cables with Teflon internal housings on eBay for $13 shipped in your choice of color complete with all ferrules and so forth. It's called an OEM pack. I love my LBS and I spend money with them when I don't have time to work on the bike myself or when I want professional opinions on problems I might be having. But when their small parts and bits cost three times what I can get it for online, that's when I balk. I'm willing to pay a reasonable premium but I have my limits. Cycling is expensive and if i didn't economize in some areas I wouldn't be able to ride as much as I do. Give me drop bars or give me wrist/ass pain!! Didn't Abe Lincoln say that? Anyway...not a swapper here. The bars on my Bleriot have been there for close to eight years. Sitting upright my wrist and butt start to complain. My fleet is all drops except for an early mountain bike that doesn't get much usage. Whatever works for you though. Am I vain? Am I living in my racer past? I can hold 18mph on flat land for 20+miles with a load in my bag while riding my albatross bars, so its not really extra speed I'm going for.
