[RBW] Re: best tires for fendered rambouillet

2014-11-17 Thread Michael Hechmer
The Ram brochures advertised 32 mm tires with fenders and I remember GP
writing that Jack Brown's will not fit with fenders. I also remember one
poster who was able to rig the fenders to make it work. With hongo fenders
my Ram maxis out at 30 mm actual and I run Grand Bois Cerf at 29MM. I
think that's the design point for this frame and that's where the bike
will perform its best.

I'm not sure what kind of winter the OP experiences but I don't think of my
much loved ram as a winter bike.

So I currently have my Sam Hillborne as my only bike, though I was
considering adding a front suspension/disc-brake mountain bike to the
stable. There's a deal for a Jamis 650B dragon pro on the interwebs now for
$1400, but I'm thinking I could rather add a second set of very nice wheels
with fatter tires instead. My main reason to do this is so that first of
all, I can have a set of slicks and a set of studded tires in the winter,
as I live in a very icy/snowy area and am bummed out by having just studded
tank tires to ride in winter. Beyond that, I want to have a set of wheels
with a 55mm-ish tire that can handle most gravel/firetrail/light
singletrack in a ride like the Oregon Outback, as I am hoping to actually
do that ride this summer. It would also just be nice to have this set of
wheels that can handle more aggressive off-road riding to go explore
different areas where I'm at (Eastern Washington).

So, I guess the question I pose to the group is: better to have a
second, cheap-ish mountain bike or a second set of really nice wheels to
maximize the All-Rounderness of a Hillborne? I've been thinking also about
Jan Heine's opinion that a rigid all-road bike with fat tires is the
Porsche 911 of a gravel-orientated ride, and I want to stick with that
plan. Also, what are some ideas about the best tire model to do this kind
of riding? I think that 50-54mm with a moderately aggressive tread would be
perfect, but I'm wondering if there is something better than the Smart Sam?

[RBW] Shoe Recommendations for VP Thin Gripsters (or Grip Kings)

2014-11-17 Thread Surlyprof
I've been using sneakers by Puma or Clarks when riding my Hillborne with
either a set of MKS Grip Kings or VP Thin Gripster pedals (which I highly
recommend!). My feet sometimes ache after a long ride in squishy shoes.
Has anyone found a stiffer soled shoe that they like with sneaker pedals?

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Flats and Hetres

2014-11-17 Thread Johan Larsson
Copied from another thread:

On my previous bike with 32 mm Continental Contact tires with a puncture
protection layer I got maybe 1-2 punctures every year. Upon weekly
inspection I used to pry out many small pieces of glass from the tires,
that the puncture protection had stopped. Using 25 mm racing tires was
impossible for commuting and everyday use on my roads - 10 punctures on the
14 days I tried having them... all 10 punctures because of glass.

On my current bike with 42 mm Hetres I have had two punctures in three
years, and I'm on my second back tire with the front tire soon having to be
replaced too. And one puncture was because of a glass shard that tore a
hole big enough I could put my finger through. I glued it from the inside
with rubber cement and a patch made from a tubular tire, and used it a full
year more, until it was completely worn out. I weigh 210 lbs so I have to
run them at fairly high pressure (~4 bar/60 psi in the back) compared to
what the lightweights can run them at, which makes it even more impressive.
I absolutely love these Hetre tires - fast, silent, comfortable, grippy and
in practice - for me, so far - puncture proof. I just wish they were
available in a true 50 mm 559 mm/26 version...

[RBW] Re: Shoe Recommendations for VP Thin Gripsters (or Grip Kings)

2014-11-17 Thread Deacon Patrick
The underlying issue here is cushioned and/or supportive shoes weaken our
feet and make them dumber. The solution is growing a stronger foot through
no cushioning and no support. All a stiffer shoe accomplishes is keeping
your foot unnecessarily weak. I ride in ZemGear shoes and love them. No
cushion, very flexible. Just be sure to give your feet time to adjust and
strengthen.

If you go with a stiffer sole, it will work in the short term, your feet
will weaken further, and you will need more support in your shoes. Stop
the madness, chuck the cushion and support! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

On my go-fast with MKS Keirin pedals and toe clips, I wear Chrome sneakers.
Here the pedal is fixed to the ball of my foot. The Chrome sneakers have
solid, lightweight shanks and I definitely get no foot strain in those

could work up some serious arch strain. But again, solved completely with
Chrome sneakers.
I have fivetens for my kayak - haven't biked in them.

Pudge, I have ice-skate feet - 13 narrow. The Chrome's fit them well, and

As far as the Merrell Proterras, they have great arch support, and a wide

I love my Fivetens. They're very sticky-- Fiveten started out making
climbing shoes, where grippiness is vital. Plus, they're stiff enough
for biking, but bendy enough for the hike-a-biking that I end up doing
quite a bit of.

True, Eric, but none of what you say changes the fact that cushioned,
supportive shoes weaken the feet. That is proven fact. Science, unlike the
market, is not consensus based. The debate (not in the market, but in the
actual science) is how to best help people strengthen their feet and
transition into less shoe. The reality is shoes, like so many other things,
are tools, and too much tool is as big a problem as too little. Each person
has to decide what the right amount is for them. But to do so in ignorance
of the reality that more cushion and support always weakens the feet is to
make that choice in ignorance.

I don't wear special biking shoes I just use whatever I am wearing. That
said, I have worn my Keen Newport H20 sandals for long (50 mile plus) rides
with no issues whatsoever. For; that matter, my Birkenstock's seem to also
work well. Pick something with a wide toe pocket, you don't want to squeeze
your feet on a long ride, and feet tend to swell with exercise.

[RBW] Re: best tires for fendered rambouillet

2014-11-17 Thread iamkeith
Two other considerations I haven't seen mentioned, that you might already
be aware of:

- Toe clip overlap is likely to be pretty severe, if you actually manage
to fit fenders over anything bigger than a 28. I have SKS fenders and
Roughy Toughies on my 60cm Ram, but find that I need to snug the fender
*very* close to the tire to be comfortable with it. I actually thought
that the 54cm used 26 wheels, but evidently not. So, with a presumably
shorter top tube than mine, it seems like yours would be worse.
And adjusting for 33s would just compound the issue. Maybe I'm more
sensitive to it than others, though.

- Your Winter conditions are obviously much different than mine (I'm
already buried in snow and ice, and will be for the next 6 months), so I
don't know what you need in a tread. I'll say though that, while they're
great for asphalt, I'd NEVER consider a Rolly Polly/Roughy Toughy/Jack
Brown tread pattern to be a winter tire. After a few good rides, the
little waffle pattern pretty much turns into a slick.

Re: [RBW] Flats and Hetres

Tire savers are meant to be positioned a mm or 2 above the tire. This can
be done even with the typical out-of-round of most tires.

using tire wipers. Thereafter, only a single flat in three years of racing

 fewer flats.

For me, the key to riding supple tires with almost zero flats has been
wide tires, which I run at 38-45 psi.

Re: [RBW] Cyclocross and a little contest

2014-11-17 Thread Bill Lindsay
I agree with Tim. It's just as presumptuous to expect unracers to be
into cyclocross as it is to expect them to be into randonneuring, or
extended loaded touring, or even S24Os. It's a harmless presumption, but
it's a presumption. If there's one thing that unracers seem to have in
common is they like what they like, not what other people tell them to like
or expect them to like. Maybe some of them drink the Riv koolaid and buy
whatever Riv offers, but even that is a choice that some do and others
don't do.

Aaron,
I don't have any to sell, but do have a suggestion if you can't track any down

I'd suggest using the Wald 867 as a placeholder.
The grip section is short, but a couple wine corks in the ends helped me and
allowed cork grips to be used without trimming them down, with just brake
levers. Thumb shifters might fit if run at an angle.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne, Oregon Outback, Off-roading and the ?: 2 bikes or 2 sets of wheels?

2014-11-17 Thread Mike S
Yes, I appreciate all the input and my answer to the question of how
fast? would be that speed isn't really my concern. My main goal is to push
the Hillborne to the limits of what it is capable of and see how it fares,
prior to dropping $2000+ on a new bike when 95% of what I'd want to do can
be done with the Sam. The tire recommendations sound good, but I am
wondering what the absolute FAT MAX limit of my 2012 Waterford-built 64cm
Sam might be...

From what I've heard, it's possible that a 50mm can fit without fenders. If
this is the case, I'm wondering if the Schwalbe 'Thunder Burt' would be a
viable candidate, as a lot of folks rave about it in other forum posts I've
read on O.O. Going with this as a tubeless tire on the Sam would seem like
the best of all possible worlds, if the clearances are indeed do-able.

The Surly Ogre looks like a complete beast of a bike, and my 96cm PBH
having self is very pleased that they offer it in XXL. If I were to go for
a fat-ish bike, I think that would be the one. However, it is just about
impossible at this point in time for me to add a steed to the stable (see:
$$$).

 Mike,

The question that comes to my mind regarding the OO is how do you want to
 ride it?

Fast like Jan Heine or taking your time and camping along the way? If you
plan on riding in like under 30 hours than a 42 mm tire like the Grand Bois
Hetre's would be sufficient with next to no load (as Aaron mentioned).

 http://velodirt.com/the-oregon-outback-2014-in-aggregate/

If your not a speed demon and enjoy the pleasure of experiencing your
natural surroundings and camping along the way than again the Hillborne
should suffice with either the BG rocking roads in 700c and soon in
650b/43mm or the Soma Cazadero also in 700c 650b.

Weight wise I know the Hillborne can carry a sufficient load so I see no
need for a more dedicated MTB hardtail with front supension for the OO. The
Jamis Dragon would also be excellent on the OO but not mandatory. If you
plan on riding aggressive downhill single track than the Dragon will
 outshine the Sam.

I agree that two bikes are more versatile (as Eric mentioned ). I'm an
advocate for n+1. Perhaps a fat tire bike would be worth acquiring with
studded tires in the winter and those fat tires can come in handy in Sandy
muddy conditions that the Sam might not excel.

 Anyway my .02.

I have been having the usual saddle problems with my B-17's. After longterm

It's on my list for next season. I'm trying to recruit a couple of buddies

If time and energy permit I'd like to continue north via USFS roads on the

be a challenge, the route in Oregon gets hot early and the snow in WA

I am sorry if my post offended some people, or if it sounded like I

inclined, but not to suggest that you should like it (or anything else, at
that matter.)

*Bicycle Quarterly*'s editorial policy always has been to provide the
facts, but leave the judgment up to you. That is why we don't crown bikes
of the year or rides of the year – we figure that everybody's
preferences are different. So we provide the facts (for example, how a bike
handles, how it performs, how well it's put together), and you can form
your own opinion on whether you'd like to own one or not.

I am sorry if my post was unclear in that regard.

As for moderately aggressive tires in the 50 mm or so width: The Furious
Fred is wonderfully light (*360 grams on a Pelouze mail scale for the
622X50*) and has enough tread to make a slight difference compared to
slicks on loose dirt. But it has absolutely no resistance to thorns. I
rectify this with Stan's, in a tubeless setup, and the combination is
wonderful in goathead land. The Big Apple is much heavier, but a nice
rolling tire withal considering (a) its bulk and (b) the effective puncture
belt; and it withstands goatheads wonderfully* without recourse to sealant.
(Caveat: I've used 559 and 622 60 mm Big Apples in the garden variety wire
bead model and in the Liteskin model, no longer made.)

 * Withstands, vi, to wit: it won't keep a goathead thorn from
penetrating after several pavement rotations; but I've rolled out from dirt
excursions with literally scores of goatheads stuck to the tread, flicked
them off, and ridden home without any air loss. IOW, the thorn has to work
hard to get through the BA's puncture belt. *And*, the tire rolls
surprisingly well compared to other belted tires, which are pure shite in

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne, Oregon Outback, Off-roading and the ?: 2 bikes or 2 sets of wheels?

2014-11-17 Thread Mike S
I also ponder if the 622-50 (listed) Schwalbe Almotion will fit a Sam. I
know their tires are usually ~2mm narrower than the label in that size
range, and a helpful fellow at BBH said that someone at RBW does run 50's
on a Sam.

Then again, as our fallen brother Lance A. is reputed to have said: it's
not about the bike.

Ogre is in my future when I'm no longer enduring my vow of poverty (grad

As far as another bike... there is the used market. I've seen used
Fargos in the price range of that Jamis.

Wait, I don't understand why you don't just try a pair. Yours is the 650B
sam right?

Vee Rubber makes a 650B x 1.95 tire too. Cazadero is still my pick tho.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne, Oregon Outback, Off-roading and the ?: 2 bikes or 2 sets of wheels?

2014-11-17 Thread Mike S
I'm on 700C wheels and they currently have studded tires entrenched for the
duration. I also order my Schwalbe rubber from a German retailer, so it
takes some commitment. The Cazaderos do sound great too, especially if I
could keep my ultrawide Berthoud fenders on with them.
