[RBW] Crystal Cove State Park overnight

2014-11-30 Thread Curtis

After being inspired by Doug’s post on mini-tours I put together a round
trip overnighter out of downtown San Diego. Catching the 8:30 am train for
Irvine and then returning to San Diego at 3 pm the following day. Upon
arrival in Irvine I followed the San Diego River Trail to the coast. While
on the SDRT I had the second of two chance encounters. Doug was riding
east with his Tuesday riding group as I was heading west. After a good
conversation about past, current and future trips we went about our
adventures. I found out later that his riding group ask Doug about the
“homeless” man he was talking to.

Had lunch along Newport Back Bay and then headed south with the intent of
avoiding as much of PCH as possible. Found some wonderful views of the
ocean as my path wound in and out of neighborhoods west of the PCH. Ran
across a deli on one stretch of the PCH and picked up a sandwich for
dinner. The options for avoiding the PCH diminished as I headed south.
After a few miles Crystal Cove State Park was found a short distance east
of PCH. I got a spot at Lower Moro, one of their primitive environmental
camps. The climb up to Lower Moro was on fire roads. After a few stops I
found myself the only camper at Lower Moro. This was to change after dark
however. After setting up and enjoying dinner and the views the sun set
rapidly. The view was amazing, miles and miles of ocean. There were
several container ships setting just off shore. I guess they were waiting
their turn in the port of Long Beach. Maybe some of the ships had Nitto
parts on board. After sun set I heard voices on the road up to the camp
and in a few minutes five guys showed up. It was fun to watch them set up
their tent for the first time. They were high school seniors, an animal
that I am familiar with, and where out for an overnight. Once the tent was
set up a couple of them called their parents. The kids were quiet and by 7
pm I was asleep.

On Wednesday I was up by 6 and ready to ride by 6:45 am. Decided to make a
loop on the fire roads and headed up to Upper Moro. Upper Moro camp has
more sheltered spots, but the view was not a grand. After reaching the
ridge and taking the cut off trail to the canyon road I was back in the day
use area in no time.

I was to meet the train in Oceanside at 1:30 pm so south I went. The city
of Laguna Beach needs to add some bicycle infrastructure. Absolutely no
bike lanes in Laguna Beach along the PCH. The bike lane resumed once the
PCH enters Dana Point. The rest of the trip was uneventful and at 2:30 I
was back in San Diego.

This is a trip that would be worth doing again. One change would be to
arrive and leave out of Irvine. The PCH is not much fun. How great that
we have such a great resource here in Southern California.

Here is a link to some pictures of the trip:

Enjoy

[RBW] Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass

2014-11-30 Thread Darin G.
I just put the Stampede Pass tires on my Romulus, replacing a set of Ruffy
Tuffy's. My expectations were not particularly high but after two rides I am
very impressed. I haven't ridden the Jack Brown blues on my Rom but had them
on my Sam and then my Atlantis. I thought it was a good commuter tire and
would still use it for that purpose (the Atlantis is wearing Marathon Supremes
now). I had only one flat in 4500 miles and it was a nail. Similarly, the
Ruffy Tuffy's were indeed very tough. The Compass tire, however is simply in
another class. Not only was the ride much more plush than the ride on the
Ruffy Tuffy, or the JB, the bike felt very lively, and on my two rides it was
considerably faster than I typically ride over the same route--nearly 5
minutes faster over a 25 mile course. Two rides are hardly a sufficient data
set to proclaim it a faster tire but I'm confident that it is not slower. I'm
looking forward to using it for my recreational riding. Highly recommended.

Wow, what an awesome bag! The quality is amazing, the fit couldn't be any

to build me a 'Super C' frame bag since my Brooks Conquest saddle lacks
loops for a saddle bag... Thanks, Ely...the craftsmanship is simply

[RBW] Re: Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass

2014-11-30 Thread stonehog
Sean - I just dropped my Jack Brown Greens for some new Stampede Pass tires
and rode a 200k on Wednesday. Thoughts. I like the Stampede Pass better
immediately, but I am sensitive to tires and weigh in at a whopping 160
lbs. They are more compliant over rough roads, and are nearly as cush as
the much larger Hetres (650b). Best thing out there for my Hilsen in 700c
so far. If you want a fast, cush tire, and can spend the dough, the
Stampede Pass is great. The Jacks are definitely great, too. When I
removed them, they measured in at 34.5mm (https://flic.kr/p/pEfBeM), and
still have a lot of life left in them. the difference in tread is another
area I would point out. The Compass tread feels more grippy (still new)
but the JB tread looks unique. For reference, I fill my tires to 60psi
rear, and 45psi front.

 Hi folks,

Now that the indoor riding season has begun, my thoughts have turned to

was new to me last summer, and is really a joy to ride. It is my go-to
bike, fast rides, long rides - you name it this bike can do it.

Last summer I had it set-up with some old tires I had lying around - a
Rolly-Polly in the front and a Roughy-Toughy in the back. For 2015 I am
looking for something new. My hope is to find the best combination of
 speed-comfort-durability.

The bike is designed to fit tires up to 33.3 mm wide. I've narrowed
down my selections to the Jack Brown and the Stampede Pass. Lots of folks
here seem to like Jack Brown, but I don't read much about the Stampede Pass
tires. Has anyone used both? I would love to hear a comparison. I would
also be interested in any long-term reviews of the Stampede Pass tires.

A third tires I considered was the Challenge Strada Bianca. However, from
what I have read, this seems to be a tire that is difficult to mount (I've
got Open Pro rims) and not terribly durable. Any thoughts on this tired
(especially compared to the other two I am looking at) would be appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Sean

I prefer a short top-tube but I'm worried about how much seatpost will be

Actually, my primary concern is that I already have a set of Rich Lesnik

is representative of this. There are quite a number of paint dings and

is confined to the paint and is not affecting the tubes. The frame was never
crashed, and is structurally sound and in alignment.

Re: [RBW] Re: I rode the Clem Smith proto this morning

2014-11-30 Thread iamkeith
Chris,

If that Trek is a 52, the seatpost actually looks just about right.
for the era it was made. Funny how, once you know better, those old bikes
just don't seem right anymore. Another funny thing though is that a lot of
people still jack the post up even further when they take photos to share,
because they still think that the head-down, NORBA style looks authentic.
So it probably only looks hideous to you.

You and Peter now have me wondering, though, as we all three seem to be
about the same size (87 PBH, 75.5cm saddle height). I had been expecting
that the 59 was going to be a good fit for me, but I'm not so sure after
Grant's comments above. If either of you don't mind answering, I'm
curious:

How tall are you, overall? I'm just shy of 6'-2. I always describe my
self as freakishly long-torso/short inseam. Would be interesting if your
more normal proportions confirm this, though. I have three 60cm
Rivendells (Ram / Quickbeam / All Rounder) which all fit pretty darn well.
All have roughly the same (perfect) standover height, but progressively
longer top tubes. Unlike you, I like the longest best though

Another question: Do you find yourself between sizes on other Rivendell
models? I do. For instance, (not having tried either) I really think I'm
squarely between the 58 61 Atlantis, and the 54 58 Hunquapillar. Which
is part of why is I've been hoping that this bike was going to work: A
fat, 700c Rivendell in *MY* size.

FWIW, I don't think I'd worry about selection in 650b tires any more, given
the clearance that this model will likely have and the abundance of
mountain bike tires out there. I worry more about getting an
ideal fit. but I fear, once again, that I'm going to fall in the
middle. Maybe the new Joe Appaloosa, if it has similar clearance and is
truly based on stretching the existing Sam Hillborne?!!! A 58
Sam could be just about right..

Crossing my fingers.

Re: [RBW] Re: I rode the Clem Smith proto this morning

2014-11-30 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
Keith,

I'm just shy of 6' tall and I've always thought of myself as short legged
and longer torso'ed but I'm no longer sure that is accurate. My 1983 MTB
has a seat-tube of 57.5cm and a S.O. of 83 and I'm perfectly comfortable
riding it. In fact, I like how little seat-tube is showing and how easy it
is to get the handlebars high, even with a very short quill stem. Another
bike has about a 57cm seat-tube and 84cm S.O. and I can ride it but
wouldn't want to go any taller. My saddle height might be closer to 74cm
as I've recently realized that the one I set at 75cm has a lot of padding I
probably compress, My much flatter, less padded saddle sits at less than
75cm from the BB.

I've never ridden a Rivendell but I've looked at the geo charts of the
bikes I'm interested in:

I would ride a 54cm Hunqapillar. No question about it but the tires I
would run would put the S.O. higher than I would want for anything rougher
than smooth dirt. The next highest size would be way too big for me.

On the Atlantis I think the 56cm would be the best height for me but given
my experience with my other two bikes, I could ride a 58cm. The main
appeal of the Atlantis for me is the 26 wheels so that would preclude the
58cm, regardless.

I was thinking that maybe the 59cm Clem might be right for me but when
Grant said up to 95 PBH, I pretty much counted it out. That's a huge jump
and I'm thinking the 52 has to be the right size for me but it still sounds
too small.

The three framesets I'm currently considering are the Surly LHT (56cm/26
wheels), Troll (18) and Ogre (18). The LHT would be just the right size
although I might be able to stretch onto a 58cm. The Troll and Ogre will
have a ton of seat post showing but that's normal for that type of bike and
the extreme angle of the top-tube would make it very, very easy to get my
handlebars where I want them. Plus, I really like the way MTB's ride. I'm
currently riding a 26 wheel bike that is comparable in front-end geometry
to the 26 LHT and it's a little too twitchy for me, even with Big Apples.
I am coming off 3 weeks of riding an 83 MTB with 80 mm of Trail, though!
I test rode a stock 26 LHT and the 26 wheels with 1.5 tires were just
too twitchy for my tastes. I had thought maybe MTB bars and 55mm tires
would fix that but my current bike with similar front geometry shows me
that's not the case.

I'm always on the lookout for a medium (18) Troll, Ogre or Karate Monkey
with a saddle set at 75cm so I can see what the proportions look like and
just his weekend a guy posted a Troll that fit the bill. It doesn't look
too bad and given the Ogre has the same length seat tube, it should look
the same.

people still jack the post up even further when they take photos to share,
because they still think that the head-down, NORBA style looks authentic.

FWIW, I don't think I'd worry about selection in 650b tires any more,
given the clearance that this model will likely have and the abundance of
mountain bike tires out there.

Just for some more data points, I'm around 5'10 with an 85 cm PBH, and my
seat around 75 cm, on a 58 cm Atlantis with 38 mm Soma C-lines. I've also
used 40 mm Schwalbe Marathons. I would not ride anything bigger could in
fact ride a 56 cm Atlantis. Hugh has a 56 shod with I believe 2.1 wide x
26 tires. We've ridden each others bikes and agree that, while it's
close, the 56 has slightly more stand over than the 58. Hoping this helps
in your frame size cogitations.

Re: [RBW] Re: I rode the Clem Smith proto this morning

2014-11-30 Thread Goshen Peter
Keith, we have the same pbh but I am 5'11 with longish torso and short
arms, finding bikes that fit me is a pain . I was most recently riding a
56 bombadil. I am also in between on sizes. I wanted a Hunqapillar when
they came out but didn't want a yard of seatpost on the 54 and the 58 gave
me zero clearance. Same with 52/56 bombadil and 56/60(?) Sam, and the 58/61
Atlantis. The 60cm 650b Saluki would be a good fit but rare as hens teeth
and not nearly the tire clearance I would want. For me the perfect bike
would be a 55cm bombadil with a 60 cm TT and standover at around 84 with
Max tires. The 56 bombadil fit well in the TT but a tad too large to go big
rubber. A 58cm Sam/Joe appaloosa with clearance for 60s no fenders would
also be great so fingers crossed.

just don't seem right anymore.

I had been expecting
that the 59 was going to be a good fit for

Anton I completely agree with you when it comes to Phil Wood hubs and
the replacable bearings. I believe it's a cartridge bearing. As a side
note, does anyone know if White Industries hubs use replacable cartridge
bearings? I love the MUSA factor.

Does anyone feel that the expensive group sets (i.e. derailleurs,

What is it that drives the price up? Is it the performance or just the
 material it's made up of/weight?

[RBW] Re: Post Thanksgiving Cranksgiving Dirt Paradise Ride.

Looks like another great ride, Hugh! Love Ole Willys - all set up to kick
up the dirt.

Three plus hours and twenty miles of pristine dirt single track around
Carmel Valley in San Diego ' s North County was enjoyed by we five members
of (SCAR) SoCal All Rounders. David Greenblatt, Mike Shiller, Tom Virgil,
 Curtis Mckenzie and I socalpedalpusher.

We all met at David's home and promptly dropped into Gonzalez Canyon
zigzaging through dense chaparral with abandon. The weather was sunny and
pleasant with a slight breeze. Apologies to the the Northern climes.

Our dear Tom had run out of time and made an exit, for he had Christmas
tree trimming duty waiting for him, it was great to see him but too short
for me. Tom and I met the next day for coffee outside which was great.

As with gleeful joy on single track often a sacrifice is made to the trail
gods. Our Mike Shiller was gallant enough to shed some blood for the cause
when he and a tree had a disagreement, Mike' wounds were treated a red
bandanna was added to his outfit (made him that much more gnarled) and off
we went resuming our ride...by the way the tree was fine just in case you
 were wondering.

This has been David's playground for a while now so he put together a bow
tie dirt event for us...he tied together two Canyons and a Mesa with next
to no cars to contend with. Literally the GPS mapping is a bow tie as we
crossed under the 56 freeway multiple times.

After Gonzalez we dropped into Penasquitos Canyon after climbing a short
steep access road. We cheerfully glided down smooth undulating single track
along the North side of Penasquitos Canyon heading West where we crossed
paths with the few hikers on our adventure. Soon we made a short stop at
the Waterfalls for snacks, bike talk and future rides.

Continuing we looped back around and headed East up Penasquitos. David
saved the best till last the Del Mar Mesa Preserve where the tunnels exist.
These are scrub oak grown over making a tunnel canopy with yet more
singletrack winding it's way down another small canyon a technical sheer
blast! One had to be vigilant so as not to have your head smashed backward
from low hanging branches. As I rolled through the tunnels hugging *(Ole
Willy's) top tube I wondered how Curtis at 6'7 was fairing? He came
through for the most unscathed a little bit of bark was seen in his
 vicinity.

Concluding our ride at Greenblatt ' s Ale House David was a great host
lots of chips dips, some Sculpin grapefruit ale and Speedway Stout was
had, adding at least on my part 10% by volume the extra cherry on the
proverbial cake on the perfect day in the saddle. With the sun set...

...we parted ways I was left with the image of all the broad smiles while
 playing in the dirt.

Up next? Sweetwater Regional Park Camping.
