[RBW] Re: Your dream RBW wheel set build, please
A quick dynohub point... I have around ten years and many, many thousands of miles on a Shimano DH3-N70. It has been great to ride, and I sort of forgot it was there, until I recently started trying out other wheels. In general, the drag is so low you don't notice it unless you're really thinking about it. Then I got my hands on their most (?) recent version, the DH3-N80. Even better. Unbelievably. I had always sort of pooh-poohed the efficiency differences I'd seen reported, but this may be time for a reconsideration. I I understand that the German dynohubs are even better. Consequently, if you have the money, I would lean that way (a Schmidt, say). OTOH, if you'd like to keep the hub in reasonable territory, say under $130 or so, I'd strongly recommend that DH3-N80. The thing is utterly fantastic. On Sunday, December 14, 2014 4:15:38 PM UTC-5, David wrote: Group, would you mind offering your most ideal road-ish riding wheel set built by Riv (Rich)? Thanks Tony. I installed the fenders and front rack in October/November. Now I just need a decaleur for the bag. I'm not expecting a problem. It feels normal on the stand and around the block. The logical hypothesis is more bends should yield more friction. But remember: SRAM brifters run shift housing under the tape, and I don't hear a ton of complaining Campy brifters run shift housing under the tape, and I don't hear a ton of complaining Shimano brifters more recently run housing under the tape and I don't hear a ton of complaining None of the above have a tighter radius than the loop back at the derailer, and everybody has that I'm not worried about it. I really like running barcons completely outside of the bar tape, because that facilitates a much easier cockpit swap, and also facilitates a much easier boxing task for shipping. Completely under the tape seems to make sense as well. I'll probably never wrap the shift housing just along the drops again. None of the above have a tighter radius than the loop back at the derailer, and everybody has that I'm not worried about it. That makes a lot of sense. Especially since the loop at the rear derailer is much more exposed to road dirt. We should probably change--or clean and lube--that little loop of housing more often than we do. And I'll add to the applause for your solution to mount the big front rack to the mid-fork eyelets. Anyone find a good solution using the canti brake posts on a 26 wheel bike? Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Loup Loup Pass 650Bx38
Ha, since you dug this old thread back up, I am still using the LoupLoups and I'm still on the same batch I mentioned back in August. Can't imagine using anything else other than the Compass tires in general, and the LoupLoups on this bike for sure, since that's the biggest that will fit between the seatstays on my custom. They have the great feeling of all the light fat tires that Jan Heine popularized, but last much longer than any of the others I've tried like the Grand Bois Cypress or the Pacenti Pari-Moto. I'm getting at least 2500 miles per tire. The Grand Bois would go out of round after 750-1000 miles and the Pari-Motos were cut to shreds in less mileage than that. I just finally got a flat on the back about 15 miles from the end of last weekend's 600K that got me thinking I might want to replace the back tire since I could see the casing through the puncture. But instead I just booted it and carried on, it's got at least 2000 miles on it so maybe eek out another 500 ;) My recently acquired Redwood is still 700c but when I get around to replacing the tires I will probably try Compass Stampede Pass. If I convert it to 650B it will wear the LoupLoups. -Jim On Sat, Dec 13, 2014 at 10:28 PM, PaulS shinp...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for this review. Most of the supple tires I tried before gave a very short life on the rear wheel, I think mostly owing to the weight of the engine. Re: [RBW] Re: Friction shifting and pulleys again
I have a big ring of 44 and I use the 11 on almost every ride. I'm pretty happy with 44/28 up front and 11-34 in the back, 9 speed indexed shifting with Microshift bar end, Deore M591-SGS derailer and HG50 cassette. This combination maxes out about 28-29 mph, which is fine for my usage. Smallest gear of 28-34 has not had me walking as of yet. So the 12 is the easy one to swap. Yes, I admit that the 11 is only a downhill toy and otherwise useless. But toys are toys and since I haven't grown up by now, it is a sure bet that I'm not going to. Fortunately, I'm too weak to spin the 11 fast enough to reach a dangerous speed anyway. Only gravity can do that for me now. The 11 fills a niche to boost me a little faster on a very mild hill before I stop spinning and start braking on a bigger hill. :-) Doug -Original Message- From: rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Steve Palincsar Sent: Friday, December 12, 2014 1:08 PM To: rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [RBW] Re: Friction shifting and pulleys again On 12/12/2014 03:57 PM, Doug Williams wrote: Well I do get hills where I live, and especially when I head north. I was thinking of being in the gas lamp area around 5:15-5:30. Then a ride along the bay to our favorite fish place in Pt. Loma. The ride is only about 9 or 10 miles round trip. [RBW] The new cycling revolution starts NOW! With one custom bike part! (Modified Silver Shifter)
OK, that's a little hyperbolic, but I'm pretty excited. I like downtube shifters, and Silver downtube shifters are great. I use Silvers and I use the Suntour Sprints that Silvers copied. They are *almost* perfect. One thing I like a teeny bit better is that the very last Shimano downtube shifters had a neat little feature. The left side shifter would not lay flat, parallel with the downtube. It had a built-in internal stop that made it stop a bit early. That way, when you reach through to grab that left shifter with your right hand, it was sitting up high and was easier to grab. I always thought that was pretty slick. The piece that causes Silvers, and Suntour, and Campy, and Gipiemme shifters to stop parallel to the downtube was the same little piece. It's a flat piece of aluminum with a square hole in it, and a bent tooth in just the right place. I went ahead and worked out a design for a different base plate piece that has the tooth repositioned to give my Silver shifters that Shimano feature of grab-ability. I had my brother-in-law work up a solid model and I ordered a prototype from a machine shop. I test installed it tonight, and it works just like I planned it. Photos prove I can overthink almost anything: Silver 2.0 https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/72157649775913121/ Now I'm looking into more cost effective manufacturing methods to see if it's feasible to make a run of these for other downtube zealots to geek out on. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: PSA: Are you missing a large yellow Albatrossed A. Homer Hilsen ?
Good connection. Emil did own a 650B Hilsen with 700c wheels and short reach brakes. That would make the 56cm part feasible. Re: [RBW] Re: Phase Two of an Atlantis build
Bill, no interest in DT shifting for an even cleaner and lighter build that would really make cockpit swapping easy? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
