[RBW] Considerations for losing the front deraileure

2015-01-13 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
This is one of many threads that makes me very grateful that I am satisfied to
work with off the shelf systems. I don't need creative, mix and match,
Shimergo, etc, etc, etc.

Generally, my only question is, do I have enough gear range for the challenge
at hand. If you are bad-ass enough to ride mixed terrain and not worry about
that question, then my hat is off to you.

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2015-01-13 Thread Ikky
I'm working on a 1985 Bridgestone T700 rebuild while I wait for my Atlantis
to come back from painting at Mercian. Just finished cutting off the canti
posts, which could not support 700c wheels, and even caused problems with
any brakes (other than the originals) with 27 wheels. Not sure why they
were brazed so high, but it doesn't matter to me. I've got a set of NOS 610
centerpulls that will go over fenders and 32mm tires with room. The
original headset had the shortest stack height I've ever seen, and the
steerer is so short that I can't fit a decaleur in the new stack, so I'll
probably throw a Velo Orange Rando rack with integrated decaleur on the
front for a handlebar bag. Shame to waste the lowrider brazeons, but oh
well. It will go for painting at Mercian as well. Then just need to build
them both up!

go with the anticipated springtime, fruition or not. It's biking fun for
 the extra bandwidth.

My project is a low trail, 650b wheeled, all-around bike made with a
lively tube set (versus sturdy for touring) with drop bars, center pull
brakes, generator hub, LED lighting. All on a budget recognizing the value
of experience, unlike the box bike/mass market interpretation, handmade
wheels versus machine made ones as an example. I am reading and including
many posting subjects and items in this project and admit that may not
reach reality, but it's fun to have on the drawing board.

[RBW] Coldest Ride on a Rivendell Ever?

2015-01-13 Thread Ted Shwartz
My coldest day happened on my regular commute. It normally takes 45 minutes.
That day it took 1 1/2 hours. When I finally got to work I looked up the
weather and found out it was 3 below (Fahrenheit) with a 25 mph headwind.

It took a while for my water bottle to thaw, and my brain engage.

The rest was ok, just cooked from the upwind ride. My normal cold weather
equipment is a layered approach, and thin wool socks, thick wool socks, and a
goretex oversock with Shimano sandles. The feet are well insulated, not
constricted, and don't have booty/shoe/cleat holes

I have a Handsome Devil that is blue that I am not saying is a poor mans

also have Rivendell Jack Browns on and bamboo fenders. It is a fun ride set
up either way. You see very few in Oklahoma as would be the case with a QB

my commute and some of the rail trails around here. Fenders eyelets would
be a plus Mostly complete I'd like the bike to come under $1600. I usually

The only option I've seen so far is the Cross Check SS, Any other

Re: [RBW] Re: SKS LongBoard Question

The P45s are really a little too long for my bike with 650Bx38, when I
tried to bolt them in on the back side of the fork with Sheldon nuts, the
flap was dragging all over the place. I moved it back to the front side of
the fork.

If the P50s are a little shorter, I'd probably like that. Some trimming on
the front of the rear fender would probably be required to get it between
the seat stays, though.

In the end I only made it halfway there. 85km later my toes had finally
frozen solid, and the sun was starting to get pretty low. I was riding with
my dad, who's face had begun to blister and turn white from frostbite. We
were out for 5 hours. Later in the week, I was in the emergency room for a
minor cut and met two people who had turned their hands completely black
from exposure on that day, after being outside less than 10 minutes each. I
felt pretty good about my 5 hours.

When I arrived at the cabin, the warmth of the fire and blankets was too
much to overcome. I spent the night warm and toasty, which I do not regret
 at all.

I'm going to attempt a much shorter overnight in a few weeks though, so I
can test out the winter camping gear.

 Get out there!

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2015-01-13 Thread Tim Gavin
Compass tires 26 offerings seem quite nice, but I wish they'd offer an
even wider 2 version. I haven't tried the Kojaks personally. I like the
Schwalbe ballooners; I've tried the Fat Frank and Big Apple, but I find
them to ride more sluggishly than my favorite 26 tire:

I can't stop raving about the ITS MK2 micro-knobby tires on my KOM
(26x2.1). Vee Rubber makes them now, as the:
Speedster 26 x 2.1, 185TPI! for $45
http://shop.veetireco.com/Vee-Tire-Co-Speedster-26-x-2-10-All-Mountain-Tire-p/mtb-spst.htm
dual
compound (also in 1.75
http://shop.veetireco.com/Vee-Tire-Co-Speedster-26-x-1-75-All-Mountain-Tire-p/mtb-spst-r2.htm
and 1.95
http://shop.veetireco.com/Vee-Tire-Co-Speedster-26-x-1-95-All-Mountain-Tire-p/mtb-spst-r3.htm
185TPI)
Speedster 26 x 2.125 120TPI for $35
http://shop.veetireco.com/Vee-Tire-Co-Speedster-26-x-2-125-MTB-Tire-p/mtb-spst-r1.htm
low
specific gravity (BMX compound)
MK3 26 x 2.25 72 TPI for $37
http://shop.veetireco.com/Vee-Tire-Co-MK3-26x2-25-BMX-Tire-p/bx-mk3-14.htm
low specific gravity (I love the micro-knobby tread!)

These are excellent, fast tires on any road. They're great on pavement,
gravel, and dirt. And I've had no punctures in a year of serious gravel
and city commute riding, even though they lack a puncture protection
layer. For comparison: I've roughly split riding time between my KOM with
these tires and my Riv Road on Lierres, and the Lierres got a glass or
debris puncture roughly once a month.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Bonk?

2015-01-13 Thread Montclair BobbyB
The Ketogenic diet hasn't worked well for me... I find it's simply too
difficult (and put me in a mild rage). I'm on a long-term diet
modification, gradually 'fixing' my diet, increasing my intake of greens,
veges and fruits (no-brainer, right?)... Well I've always known this, yet
have struggled to stick to it. I have to admit, I've been a carbo-holic my
entire life and I have finally come to recognize this. Using a Vitamix
really helps me ... I can quickly blend up a handful of greens with an
avocado, flaxseed, almonds, frozen berries and water...sometimes I'll even
throw in half a cup of steelcut oats... There are so many variations of
greens and veges to explore, I can't see ever getting bored with this. The
flavor combinations can be extraordinary. This makes a hearty and filling
drink (that I'm really liking) and I often complement this with 2 poached
eggs... Easy and quite filling, and I'm no longer missing the carbs. In
fact the thought of having a traditional diner breakfast with 2 eggs,
bacon, toast, potatoes and OJ (something I always have enjoyed)... has
entirely lost its appeal (beyond the eggs bacon, that is).

Oh and BTW I've lost over 30 lbs of my 45 lb goal (and am so far on a
steady course). Stay healthy, (and for God's sake Patrick, can you at
least find a Thermarest pad to throw on the floor? Last time I slept
directly on a hard floor was painful).

Peace,
BB

Very Timely question!! I lost control on a wooden bridge two weeks ago
from this past Monday. I was going about 12 mph. It was misting and I had
just gone thru a puddle got onto the bridge and just slightly turned and
wham!!! the rear end just went out from underneath me. I was clipped in but
the bike slid off to my left and I hit my knee but slammed into the bridge
with my thigh. I didn't go t the doctor but did drive myself home. Huge
bruise developed with an oval shaped raised hematoma. I was always able to
walk but it was painful. The good news is that most of the bruising has
healed hematoma is going down and I plan on trying a ride wed or thursday
of this week.

turn and skidded and crashed on the pavement, helmet saved my life, wear

Doctor said weeks to months. Various internet threads seem to confirm the
same. But you guys and girls are smarter than various internet threads ;)

Hunqapillar is fine, not sure about those brand new big ben tires though.

Yeah, it took me a couple of years to be able to go full time ketogenic. I
possibly could have shifted sooner, but it took my body a while to
strengthen it's ketogenic capacity to the point I could go full time. From
all I've read, unless you have a medical reason to go full time ketogenic,
low carb and occasional intermittent fasting is a brilliant way to go
(that's what I did for two years to get to full time ketogenic -- have no
idea what I was doing as there was so little info on details of how to do
it).

At home, I sleep on a wool blanket, if that helps you feel better, BB.
Grin. Bikepacking and camping, it's a foam pad, though I'd prefer a denser
one. The Thermarest is too bloody soft and frilly for me. Grin.

I don't see why you can't be up and running again fairly soon. I guess it
also depends on drive and age. I did this on a dirtbike in the spring and
went and raced a 120 mile enduro the next weekend. This was before the
hematoma really set it, only about an hour after the wreck. Later you
could actually see tire marks up my back. I'd say give it a week or two of
rest and then pedal away. Better your leg than your butt IMO something

[RBW] Re: SKS LongBoard Question

2015-01-13 Thread Wildcat96
I had the new P55 Longboards on my old XO-2 and currently have the new P50
Longboards on my 650b Hillborne. The new P50 Longboards are definitely
longer than the P55 Longboards and even the fender itself appear to be a
little longer than the old P50's without the flaps (I have a set of those
as well). None are near as long as the original P45 Longboards however
(got those too). The new P50's fit my Hillborne with 650b x 41 Fatty
Rumpkins just about perfectly, but I am using Sheldon's Fender Nuts to get
the front fender a little higher and flatter in the fork crown for
clearance.

I'm wondering if that means they're all the same length. In particular if
the p55s are the same overall length as the p50. I'd prefer the extra width

Yes, so I've heard... Truth is I've given up alcohol for 2015, so I'd have
to watch someone else drink it (which would be tragic)... oh well.

And there's something to be said about preserving a classic bike in its
native setting... I own a mint condition '85 Stumpy Sport that I picked up
last year in Burlington VT... It was purchased in VT, and has never set
foot outside of the state. I fear if I ever attempt to transport it back
to NJ, it will somehow lose its youthfulness, and magically age and rust as
I cross the border, kinda like Maria leaving Shangri-La... No, that Stumpy
stays in VT, and this Stumpy belongs in Santa Rosa... what a great
round-town bike it will make for someone... 'sniff'

Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Bonk?

2015-01-13 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I recall about a year ago I was getting really tired of all this talk of
primal/paleo/low carb/let's eat better talk around here. In fact i was more
or less avoiding the topic altogether. Can anyone imagine why? :-)

Then last April I had my left hip replaced (documented here to some degree)
and decided that as long as I had to up my non-cycling exercise, walking,
stretching, and core stuff suggested through PT, I might as well take off
some of the lard I was carrying around.

My surgery was at the end of April and in May I was recovering and frankly,
eating garbage as a treat for my recovery (not a good way to recover I
might add - now). Still it was on my mind. Once I was fully mobile I
decided I'd try eating at least a bit healthier and stopped bringing sweets
home, switched to salads at work, and cut way back on carbs (not in line
with any particular plan, just cutting back).

I noticed some improvement in both health and weight and started paying a
bit more attention to the threads on the topic here. I made a few more
modifications but still was only losing weight only gradually.

When Grant's book came out I figured, why not? At least I would supporting
him and such. Well it made sense to me and as I'd already cut way back on
carbs it wasn't particularly difficult physically to go further (though
mentally I still wanted a bit of pie from time to time).

That's when the weight more or less started falling away and my health
improved noticeably, not just to me but to other folks as well.

I've lost about 50 lbs. since surgery, much of it in just the last three
months, though not an unhealthy pace. My energy is great and I don't bonk,
at least not on anything shorter than 60-65 miles (haven't gone longer than
that recently).

I just got blood work back and compared it with numbers from fall with my
doctor yesterday. He was very impressed and happy that at least one of my
patients takes my advice. I didn't tell him that while, yes, he had
recommended very low carbs, my change had little to do with his advice and
more to do with a bunch of folks who ride bicycles a lot. In any case I can
report:

1. My blood sugar A1C number which had been 'sweet' though not diabetic is
now just high normal. I expect that will continue to drop as does my doctor
given what I've told him. Since the A1C is a long term number, my drop
doesn't represent just a change for that particular hour or time of day,
but rather a real change over time.

2. My overall cholesterol was up, but still very safe. However my HDL went
up about 50% and my LDL only a little so my overall risk factor has
dropped. My doctor was not concerned about overall numbers and was very
pleased about the changes.

3. I've lost as much weight in the last three months as I did in the
previous six. In addition, during those first six I was depriving myself of
stuff that now I don't even think about.

My friends have all noticed the change (losing the equivalent of a six year
old around your waist is, um, noticeable). In fact a couple of my friends
bought me new shirts in smaller sizes for Christmas saying I really needed
to change my wardrobe. 'm still holding off on shopping because I'm not at
my goal yet and don't want to spend a lot 'in-between.'

To top it off my riding had really improved. As I said I really don't bonk
now (at least not under 65 miles). And after training for years with a 50
lb. weight around my waist and a bad hip, hills are much, much easier, even
fun. My overall speed (never really a concern) is up over distance as well.

My good friend who has always pulled away from me going up hills is now in
my mirror (we don't race, but have always agreed that we need to ride up
hills at whatever pace works best for us). He's also acquired Grant's book
but admits he hasn't really followed directions as well as he might though
now that he's seen my results I suspect he'll pay more attention.

Well that's my story. I sort of wish I'd payed attention earlier but it's
true that we're never ready till we're ready. :-)

Aloha, Bob

Awesome, Bob! The more science learns about cholesterol, the more it learns
levels are not a predictor of heart disease but low levels are a predictor
of loss of brain function. The book Grain Brain explores this very well.

I recall about a year ago I was getting really tired of all this talk of
primal/paleo/low carb/let's eat better talk around here. In fact i was more

Then last April I had my left hip replaced (documented here to some
degree) and decided that as long as I had to up my non-cycling exercise,
walking, stretching, and core stuff suggested through PT, I might as well
take off some of the lard I was carrying around.

My surgery was at the end of April and in May I was recovering and
frankly, eating garbage as a treat for my recovery (not a good way to
recover I might add - now). Still it was on my mind. Once I was fully
mobile I decided I'd try eating at least a bit healthier and stopped
bringing sweets home, switched to salads at work, and cut way back on carbs
(not in line with any particular plan, just cutting back).

 Bob,

In terms of what I wore for -40, here's my standard 'really cold' getup:

Feet: Really thick wool socks, made by Wigwam and supposedly rated to -40.
I only wear one pair of thick socks, as stuffing extra socks into the boots
removes valuable air space which is essential for insulating. I sometimes
throw a chemical toe-warmer in there as well.

 Shoes: 45NTH Wolvhammer boots

Legs: Sugoi winter leggings. These are traditional cycling leggings with a
chamois. I wear them primarily because they are insulated and have a full
wind-proof front which goes up to just below my chest. Over that, I had a
pair of wool long underwear. Over those, I wore some MEC Roubaix winter
cycling tights. Then last, a pair of knickers to keep the goofy tights-look
somewhat at bay, as well as add one final windproof layer over the family
 jewels.

Upper: First a thin synthetic base layer. This should be replaced soon
with merino as it smells, hah! Then a cycling jersey, used only so I can
make use of the tri-pockets in the back, which I use to keep food and water
warm next to my body. Then a Cima Coppi long sleeve merino wool jersey.
Last, a fitted Pearl Izumi soft shell jacket with windproof front and
 vented back.

Hands: Massive MEC winter gloves with a removable insulated liner, plus
 chemical hand warmers.

 Neck: Merino wool neck/face cover

Head: thin headband, then fitted synthetic MEC hat. If it's REAALLY cold
and windy, I'll add ski goggles.

Sounds like you may have been warmer with fewer socks. If you put on
extra socks over what you usually wear, you may have constricted blood
 flow
and thus made you foot much colder. At 22˚F I'd just be in a medium wool
 sock and a mesh shoe.

Thanks, Patrick. I was wearing only one pair of socks, but it was a
pretty tight fit in the uninsulated leather boots I was wearing, so you're
right -- my feet probably were a little too constricted. I'll take your
advice, but I just don't think I'm ready for mesh shoes just yet in these
temps! Maybe some insulated boots, like Sorels.

I appreciate your input. And speaking of inspiration, you've certainly
inspired me to get out more in the winter months -- aside from skiing, I
used to pretty much hibernate in winter, but after reading about your
exploits, I picked up my first pair of snowshoes (MSR) last year. Winter is
 fun!

 Bob
