2015-02-02 Thread John Phillips
Thank you everyone for your info opinions. You've all been a big help. It
looks like reversed Thumbies under the brake levers might be the way to go
with the Ergons.

And thanks for pointing out the GC-1's, I had forgotten about those, and
they look near perfect for the Alba's.

It's also good to know I'm not the only one who keeps bumping their bar end
shifters. I felt like a complete klutz.

I think I'll ride my current set up a week or two more before I make up my
mind, but I think it's a matter of my aesthetics arguing with my hands.

My aesthetics are so darn argumentative!

Thanks again,

John

Re: [RBW] Re: Boeshield and resistance?

2015-02-02 Thread William deRosset
Will: seriously, does cold weather affect air density and tire rubber
flexibility enough to make a noticeable difference in effort required for a
given speed?

Dear Patrick,

Air density: yes. It decreases about ten percent from zero C to 20 C. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Density_of_air for a chart. Power dissipation
due to air resistance is linear with respect to air density, so a ten
percent increase in density equals a ten percent increase in drag.

Rubber, don't have the numbers, but the rolldown tests Jan Heine did had to
be corrected to a standard temperature, and he was working over a range of
ten degrees F or so.

Does it matter? Only if the engine decides it does.

Rubber flexes less easily, I flex less easily, more clothing, winter

I also switch to winter tires which aren't as lovely-riding,
particularly if it is sloppy out. Then I'm riding tires with heavy tread,
or even carbide studded snows, and those pigs give any ride a joy-ectomy if
your expectation is to feel unencumbered and efficient.

My choice of chain lube? Not even in the equation. Yes, it technically
is, but it is one of those terms that is down in the noise, so to speak.

I have felt in the past that it does this after fresh application. But,
as with all things bike, there are so many factors that determine how you
feel on a bike on a given day it's hard to say for sure.

However, last night I put a heaping helpin' of it on my chain to help
protect against the road salts out these days and for the ride I went on
today.. It was an all out overdose for sure. The liquid version. I figure
it dries as a wax and sheds so let me get alot on there to make as big a
barrier as possible against the salts.

Anyway, on today's ride I felt like I was pedalling through concrete,
 even on flats.
I stopped twice to be sure a brake pad wasn't rubbing. Nothing rubbing.

Anyone noticed this with their use of Boeshield.
Again, it's hard to say what makes you feel sluggish on a given day. But
this made my usual sluggish look sloth like. It was crazy today. I can't
blame the Boeshield with certainty. But I had good energy. Not sure what's
going on. Perhaps I'll try something else and see if the concrete effect
 goes away.
Maybe road salts caked on tires slows you down?

[RBW] Re: Question on Big Ben handling

2015-02-02 Thread Jeremy Till
One alternative thing to check before you completely give up on the big
bens: are the tires evenly seated all the way around the rim? Sometimes
big, low pressure tires can have a bit of a wobble on the rim, caused by
the bead being stuck down in the rim in parts. I wouldn't be surprised if
you could be feeling that wobbliness in cornering. There is a line on the
tire just above the bead called the witness line. If you spin the wheel
and examine the tire/rim interface as it's spinning, the witness line
should sit just above the rim all the way around, not dive into the rim at
any point.

If you have any low spots, try pumping up the tire to maximum psi, or even
a little bit higher, so see if you can get the bead to seat. If there's
still a low spot, deflate the tire and apply some soapy water between the
bead in rim in the area where the low spot was before re-inflating to
maximum psi (don't forget to wipe off your rim when you're done). Once the
tire's evenly seated, you can deflate back to your preferred riding
pressure.

On Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 2:29:09 PM UTC-8, DS wrote:

Does anyone notice or have any input on handling with a Big Ben or balloon
type tire? Especially on cornering on fast descents?

Reason I ask is, I just bought some Big Bens (26 x 2.15) for my
Hunqapillar for mixed ride use. Took them out for a first ride a few weeks
ago, had a bad crash while on a somewhat but not terribly fast descent on
pavement, turning into a curve, though I'm 95% sure it was due to a way
under inflated tire (I had a flat about 20 minutes before that on the
trails and replaced tube but feel I did not inflate enough for the ride
 home).

Today, went out with properly-ish inflated tires (34 front, 40 psi rear),
but still felt like the bike was squirrely on turns and it felt like the
bike was going to slide out underneath me on some moderate turns, so I took
them pretty slow. But, it was also my first ride back since the crash, so
maybe that had something else to do with it. Anyone else have any comments
on the handling of these? Am I imagining things and being overly sensitive
due to the crash and this is user error?

[RBW] WTT Bosco for Albastache

2015-02-02 Thread Surlyprof
Anyone out there try an Albastache and determine it just wasn't right for
you? Had a burning desire to try a Bosco bar? I have a 55cm cromo
dullbrite Bosco bar in my garage I'd like to trade for an Albastache bar.
I'd be happy to toss in $25 to offset the cost difference. If anyone has
an interest, please drop me a note.

Thanks,
John

The Pacenti SL23s seem like a good tubeless rim to try - or perhaps the

 1. usable in a tubeless setup
 2. not overly heavy - I weigh 160lbs
 3. perhaps a bit wider

[RBW] Go with the flow

2015-02-02 Thread Manuel Acosta
Sadly I have earn a somewhat interesting reputation for having ridiculous
rides. Not always the case but whatever. Thing is the rides continue to
bring like-minded crazy folks looking for something dumb.
The original ride was suppose to be just a road ride to a dirt hill, but
much to the groups general restlessness, I unwittingly went with the flow.

And the flow was good.

John Potis, rando-guru, Knower of Trails, led us through the foothills or
beautiful Mt.Tam and ended up where we needed despite losing a few due to
burrito emergencies. The extra time gave way to cooler temps on the 680
trail and helped us blast our way to the last Ferry home.

Only one flat and one minor spill.

Pretty good way to spend the Super Bowl weekend

Pictures Proved that when Potis leds it's usually going to be good.

I plan on being there. I'll have to check if I have to register an
individual bike for sale, I thought they had a special spot just in the
door for that, but its been years since I went. I have an Adams signature
(local MD builder in the 80's) I want to give a good home.

event is indoors. The website is stopswapandsave.com. It's too late to
get a selling space, don't know if individual bike spaces are still
 available.

[RBW] Re: Go with the flow

2015-02-02 Thread Ely Ruth Rodriguez
I started using the term stand around ride. Because we usually regroup
and make jokes and drink water, rather then rando style go-go-go mode. Both
are super fun and for someone like me with a really packed schedule, every
ride with friends is worth gold.
My bikes now reflect the stupidity of the majority of rides I do, fat tires
for road rides, lights for riding in the day, food carrier for short rides
and down jacket in good weather.

PS-let's get another camp out in the books.
