Probably due to high production volumes. All drivers must have a reflective
vest within reach inside the vehicle in the Nordic countries by law. Most
hang it over the seat back. It has to be worn if the driver needs to step
out along the road. Since these are countries with a tradition of detailed
regulations, I assume the reflective qualities of the vests are regulated
to a high standard.

[RBW] Re: FS: Willow Chainrings

2015-02-10 Thread David Banzer
Hello everyone,
Thanks to all who put in orders! I'm all caught up so all orders have gone
out that were received over the weekend.
I have chainrings in 74, 110, 130, and 135 bcds.
Added Tripleizers chainrings for 130 and 135 bcd. $15 (includes hardware)
plus shipping.
Rivendell used to carry the tripleizers - converts a road double into a
triple on a 130 or 135 bcd crankset. With, I'd do a 46t tripleizer with a
30t 74 bcd, and make a chainguard for the outer spot. Easy 46/30 double, or
a subcompact 40t/25t setup. Not exactly tripleizing, but you get the point!

Thanks again,

[RBW] Bent Handlebars Question

2015-02-10 Thread Michael Ullmer
I bought a set of 46cm Nitto Noodle bars at the Seattle Bike Swap this
weekend for a steal, $15. I was so excited about them that I didn't end up
setting them down on a flat surface to see if they were completely
straight. Upon returning home I thought I would check on that. When the
bars are placed them down on a tabletop, with the ends and the clamp area
facing down. There is a slight amount of wobble to them, if I push one side
down, there is less than a dime's worth of space between the tabletop and
the swept back ramp. I'll post a picture of this when I get home, in case
you can't visualize it.

Anyways, my question is, how bent is too bent? Is this safe to use? I
obviously want to use them since a new pair of 46cm heat treated noodle
would run me upwards of $84 new. I didn't notice any bend to them until I
set them down on the tabletop, you couldn't tell they were bent by just
looking at them. I couldn't find any info on this online and was wondering
if anyone had any experience/thoughts on this.

Mike

[RBW] Re: Tall/big boys wool jersey sale of this and any other century.

2015-02-10 Thread Peter Adler
Two editorial quibbles:

1) eBay changed their search function a month or so back. There's no longer
a search page that allows you to search for seller IDs and close matches.
More than ever, you have to use *exactly* the right seller ID or your
search comes up empty. Now more than ever, Capitalization Counts. So if
you're going to post a seller's ID, it will be much easier on your readers
if you copy and paste the seller's ID exactly:

rgz4ams http://myworld.ebay.com/rgz4ams/

2) Or you could make it easier altogether, and just post the address of the
seller's listing page, which the Google Groups interface (and most email
applications) will turn into a clickable link:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/rgz4ams/m.html?item=291378019737hash=item43d77bbd99pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0rt=nc_trksid=p2047675.l2562

Let's make the Internet work for us, instead of the other way around...

TA shirt in orange, Zeus shirt in yellow, Campy shirt in red. Typically
wear the cotton shirt over a merino base layer, the day (and especially

up. (another topic I guess, but also like knickers and knee socks with
shorty socks spared).
The Ikea vests are a great idea, and I'm happy to see more of them on the

2015-02-10 Thread Z
Thanks Mark. I'm set up with 44/28 and a 115 mm spindle length. After
installation, I've decided that I could easily go with a 113 mm and achieve
the chainline recommended by White Ind.

I don't know if this will necessarily translate to your bike (nice build,
by the way!). For one thing, I have an ENO (mountain) crank rather than
the road VBC model. Also, my bike is a new 26- wheeled model with longer
chainstays (than earlier 26 Atlantiseses). I'm thinking the longer stays
allow for fat tire clearance without the dramatic curves of the older
models, and provide a little extra chainring clearance as well.

It rides wonderfully.

[RBW] FS: Terraferma 650B (offtopic)

2015-02-10 Thread Christian

Hi everyone,

Forgive the strictly non-Riv nature of this FS post. I thought this bike
might appeal to Riv owners as it's a bit Rivvy. And here's shot of it with
a Hillborne (Riv content!) on a recent overnighter:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/cwmcmillen/16287799288/

So, on to details:

I have for sale a Terraferma 650B bike. I will sell complete or in
reasonable increments, i.e. if someone has wheels already and only wants
F/F/HS/BB that's fine.

Complete: $2000. F/F/HS/BB: make me a reasonable offer. Frame was $1900
new in 2011. HS: VO needle bearing. BB: SKF

Lots and lots of pics in my Flickr photostream. Here's a couple of recent
ones in drop bar mode: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cwmcmillen/15636158855/,
https://www.flickr.com/photos/cwmcmillen/15365419528/. Here's one in
Albatross mode: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cwmcmillen/16299796971/

Nothing wrong with the bike. I'd like to sell it to fund an Elephant NFE.
I've got an itch for a new bike.

Here are details and info:

Size and geometry: It's a 56 ctt seat tube and a 57.5 ctc top tube. The
HTA is 72.5 and the STA is 73.5.

Build:

It's currently set up with Albatross bars. But for 95% of its life it's
been set up with drops. So cockpit is negotiable. Berthoud bag, Nitto
rack, saddle, King Cages, and pedals NOT included. As I said, I will
happily sell complete or in reasonable parts. Things I'd like to keep, but
will certainly sell as part of a package: Rene Herse crank and Simplex
shifters.

Bottom bracket: 116mm SKF

Crank: Rene Herse/Compass 44/28 (cassette is 9spd 11/32)

Headset: Velo Orange needle bearing

Brakes: Paul Touring Canti

Brake levers: Avid or Tektro (depending on bars)

Wheels: Front: Velocity A23 laced to SONdeluxe dynohub. Rear: Pacenti laced
to Ultegra hub (rear rim has a small crack; will include brand-new Pacenti
rim)

Tires: Grand Bois Hetre, black

Fenders: Berthoud 50mm

Shifters: Simplex Retrofriction

Stem: I have a Nitto 10cm Dirt Drop as well as a 7 and an 8cm Technomic
deluxe. Your choice

I am the only owner and I have been riding it since February 2011 (I
ordered it in May 2010). I do not know how many miles are on it; I don't
keep track. But it's been through 2 Super Randonneur series and lots of
riding in between. The frame is in excellent shape. It's optimized for
50mm Berthoud fenders and 42mm Hetres. They fit perfectly. It's
lightweight, True Temper Platinum tubing. There are lots of braze-ons: for
three water bottles cages, racks, fenders, etc.

The paint: It's painted Molteni orange. But it's a somewhat fragile paint
job (at least compared to that on my Long Haul Trucker), it seems, as there
are various nicks and chips and flakiness here and there. I've taken
photos that show what I mean. After these initial chips, etc it's not
chipped anymore.

Finally, I am in Charlottesville, VA. Would love to sell locally(ish) but
will of course ship.

Thanks for looking. Happy to answer questions.

Christian

[RBW] Re: Bent Handlebars Question

2015-02-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
For context, lots of people deliberately bend their new aluminum drop bars
to their favorite shape. Flared drops were first custom bent drop bars.
Furthermore, a dime worth could be the way they came new. You've seen the
Nitto factory movie. It's still people doing the work. A dime worth of
misalignment probably would still be shipped, and not noticed. Finally,
some people on principle will never buy used aluminum handlebars, because
you never know if they are about to go. I'm not one of those worriers.
Follow your instinct. If they seem fine, they almost certainly are. If
you are scared of them, recycle them and be bummed that you burned $15.
I've recycled one featherlite handlebar that I used for 'cross for several
years. It wasn't bent, but I started to worry. I've bought several Nitto
Noodle handlebars used. They are stout, so I'm not worried.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 9:34:45 AM UTC-8, Michael Ullmer wrote:

I've been using Schwalbe Mondials (40s) with good success. My commute is half
city streets, half hard pack gravel. They are similar to the SOMAs and the old
Marathon XRs. Treads are pretty deep and the spacing opens up on the edges.
Results in smoother feel on the road and good cornering in dirt. Only slipping
I experienced was on some wet dirt trails. The only change I would make to the
would be a boxier cross section so the side tread would engage sooner on
trails. That's where some cross tires may excel. I believe these were designed
more for mixed terrain touring.

[RBW] How to Beat Old Man Winter: Tips for Sailors in Cold Climates … How to Avoid Colds, Thaw Out Frozen Fingers

2015-02-10 Thread Zack
I thought you all would get a kick out of this, based on recent
winter-based clothing conversations. It's from the January 1944 *All Hands*,
which is (was?) the official magazine of the US Navy. It's like it was
written by Deacon Patrick!

Here is the link to the article:
 http://156.112.98.23/library/online/uniform_cold.htm#how

*How to Beat Old Man Winter: Tips for Sailors in Cold Climates … How to
Avoid Colds, Thaw Out Frozen Fingers*

Howling wind, driving rain and sleet, mountainous waves of icy salt water
 - pity the poor sailor on a night like this! Yet, you can beat old man
winter at his own game. What it takes is knowledge about what kind of
clothing to wear, how to act under varying weather conditions, what
 first-aid may be necessary.

You know from personal experience that sometimes, even when you get all
bundled up from red flannels to peajacket, you still can't keep the upper
hand over winter cold. Maybe you've been on watch, heavily clothed, and
step inside to warm up a bit. You don't take off your outfit, or even open
it up - because you're cold and you want to warm up fast before going back.

Well, you warm up fine, even begin to perspire. Then you step out again
and find you get cold very quickly. You feel chilled to the bone, commence
to shiver, and you're much more uncomfortable than before having gone
 indoors.

This is what happened: You got cold while you were on the first part of
your watch because your body was losing heat. Your body stores heat inside
and also produces heat as the result of digestion of food and physical
activity. However, the low temperature and wind had taken away much of this
heat and had caused the blood vessels supplying the skin (particularly in
the fingers and feet) to contract. Much less blood was flowing to the parts
and thus they got less heat.

When you came inside, the clothing began to absorb heat while the body
gradually began to warm up. The body had filled itself with heat and was
again ready to begin giving off extra heat. The blood vessels had opened up
and circulation increased. Since you did not take off your heavy clothing
this extra heat could not get away and soon the skin temperature rose so
 high that sweating began.

Doctors who have studied these matters know that when this happens the
body gives off heat about four times faster than usual. Your clothing got
damp from perspiration and began to take away heat at a faster rate than
normally. So when you went out-of-doors again the more exposed parts of the
body lost a great deal of heat into the atmosphere, and your damp clothes
took away a lot more heat. These losses were so rapid and so great that
they immediately caused pain. As a matter of fact, in a short time you lost
more heat than you lost during the whole time of your early watch.

Another angle is that when you were first outside you had been exercising
somewhat and your body was producing extra heat. When you came inside your
activities stopped and your body also stopped producing extra heat and
instead soon began to lose heat. When you went outside again, therefore,
your body was not producing heat to help keep you warm, but rather was
 working the other way.

Now if you can take the pain which comes along with this reaction until
the body readjusts itself, you'll be fairly comfortable. However, your
clothing is going to be rather damp and the whole discomfort is unnecessary
if you follow a few reasonable rules based on the scientific facts of what
the doctors called body heat balance. These rules are:

 1. Immediately upon coming indoors, shed your outer heavy clothing and
gloves. Avoid yielding to the temptation of warming up rapidly by retaining
all of your clothing protection, especially if additional outdoor work is
 scheduled.

 2. Avoid sweating. It will dampen clothing and start heat loss when you go
 out again.

 3. Stay indoors only long enough to get reasonably comfortable. If you get
too warm you will upset your body heat balance when you go outside again.

 4. If your hands and feet are cold, a change to dry gear will afford
 relief.

Putting on lots of clothing doesn't mean you're going to keep warm.
There's a right way and wrong way to keep warm, based on scientific fact.

There are three layers of clothing involved in protecting yourself from
winter cold. These are the underwear layer, the insulation layer, and the
 wind-and-water-resistant layer.

*Underwear* is one of the most important elements of cold-weather
clothing. It serves as sort of a heat filter to slow down body heat loss
and at the same time to take excess moisture away from the body. Underwear
should be form fitting, moderately dense, lightweight, soft but with
sufficient body to withstand compression. One-piece woolen underwear is
preferred since it absorbs a large amount of perspiration, keeps the body
 relatively dry, eliminates

[RBW] Re: Brake Cable Hanger - Fork Crown Mount

2015-02-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
Brian

I have that Tektro crown stop (not on a bike at the moment). The recessed
hole in the crown mount is 10mm in I.D.

I have a Haulin' Colin front rack on my Hillborne. It's smaller than
yours, made for a friend custom, and I picked it up from him. On my
Haulin' Colin front rack, that main center post that bolts to the crown is
made from 11mm O.D. tubing. So, those two products would not play together
well on the same bike. It would be hard to wow out that 10mm hole to 11mm,
and it would be hard to turn down that 11mm tubing to 10mm.

I do have a Nitto Mini Front playing together with an earlier rev of the
Tektro crown stop, but even that needed a little modification.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Roadeo or Other

2015-02-10 Thread RJM
I've ridden quite a few road bikes and by far my favorite is my Rivendell
Roadeo, so I would say go with that. The Riv builds up really nicely, is
very comfortable riding, and when you give it the gas the bike just goes. I
can't really express how glad I am I bought the Roadeo.

I built mine up in a not so Riv fashion using a complete Shimano 6800
Ultegra group with some Rolf Vigor RS wheels. I went the quill stem route
and use a nice looking Nitto lugged quill stem, mark's bar, Nitto seatpost,
some lighter weight saddle, and I switch the tires between 25c Conti tires
or 32 Compass Stampede Pass tires. My 53cm Roadeo sits at under 20 pounds
right now.

When I got my frame from Riv, I had them paint it Orange and it came out
great, but I have to say the blue color they have as a stock frame color is
really top notch looking, IMHO.

I'd say go on a test ride and then make your decision...but just realize
that if you feel like it, you can build up the roadeo lighter than their
stock build, if that matters to you.

I currently have a 2005 Specialized Allez Comp. It was my first road

Anyway I have been looking for a new road bike and want to go with a
steel frame, preferably lugged. I have been eyeing the Rivendell
Roadeo, as well as the De Rosa Corum (not lugged) and custom builders,
Jeff Lyon and Circle A Cycles. I am very close to sending in a deposit
to Jeff Lyon because of his experience with building the type of
frames I'm interested in. However, I have resisted because I am drawn
to the Rivendell Roadeo since it is similar to what I would like Jeff
Lyon to build me. Also I am out in CA two or three times a year and
stay pretty close to where Rivendell is located. So, I can visit them
and test ride a similar frame to what I would be buying. They have 2
 55cm's built up and I'm a 52 or 53, so even though It's not my size I
can hopefully still get an idea of how it rides.

I also really like the De Rosa, but none of the shops I called keep
them in stock and if I am going to buy it locally I'd like to be able
to take it out for a spin to see how things feel. If I'm dropping over
2k for that frame I might as well send my $ off to Lyon and let him
build me something since I couldn't test ride that either and is
 probably more what I want.

That brings me back to the Rivendell and Lyon dilemma. I want a lugged
frame that is as light as practical and can fit fenders if I want to
use them. I like the Lyon option because for about the same as the
Rivendell I am getting something made just for me. However he is
relying on the measurements and info I provide to make the correct
frame. With the Riv bike I can visit them and let them take my
measurements to determine which size Roadeo is the best fit.

So I am really confused and am asking here to see which way some of
 you would go.

 Thanks!

I don't know if this will necessarily translate to your bike (nice build,

the road VBC model. Also, my bike is a new 26- wheeled model with longer

allow for fat tire clearance without the dramatic curves of the older

Tom,
You might also consider taking a file to your binder bolt. I don't think
filing down some of the threads in the middle of the bolt significantly
weakens it, and there is no need for threads in the space between the ears

to replace the filed one would be cheep and put you back where you started.

Also consider how the bars are made at Nitto in the first place (see the
article in the Winter 2014 *Bicycle Quarterly*
http://www.bikequarterly.com/current_issue.html). They are just bent to
shape. So a little bending to straighten them is fine.

Of course, if they are truly bent or kinked, you should retire them. If you
bend aluminum back and forth too many times, it will break (usually turns
whitish first).

I assume you mean from the MUSA line. Our Woolpower tops are blends and
resist wear a little better than pure. But poly blends ain't happenin
around in MUSA. Same with our socks. You can get poly blends anywhere but
100% wool is harder to come by, and good, so we'll keep doing that for our
own stuff.

Upcoming MUSA Projects:

The striped undies are huge sellers, so more of those. In winter, a long
version. They're so great and popular we hope to have them in stock more
reliably.
Grey-heather 210g short sleeve version of the pirate crew style is next for
wool tops. It'll be a real nice garment. A simple grey merino tee. After
that we'll move to a staff-picked blue/green/grey 3-stripe light wool crew
we'll call the Freddy. It's the classic little boy's striped shirt (but
in adult sizes), named for young Freddy who comes here after school. These
are too light (and stretchy) to have pockets sewn in the back without
ripping off.
The return of knickers and seersucker (using the same pattern as chambray).
A second shorts pattern for skinny legged folks.
Mark has been working on getting some of the old Woolistic style jerseys
like we used to have back, they're made in Italy again now.
