[RBW] Re: found a Ram on CL

2015-07-03 Thread iamkeith
Conundrum. On one hand, you'll never regret buying a Riv if its a good
deal and the fit is right. You could always set them up differently. On
the other hand, there is a LOT of overlap between those two models. I've
referenced this passage from peter white before, comparing the two models,
but it might be worth reading in your case:

Re: [RBW] Re: Are all blue Rambouillets 700c, and another frame question?

2015-07-03 Thread Bruce Herbitter
From the RBW web page for Rams in march of 2009 (the one where it's famous
nap was announced):

The Rambouillet is better made than most custom frames. It is hand-made in
a small high-end frame shop in Osaka, Japan. There are five builders, and
three of them braze. Their standards are high, and our standards are high,
and the quality and consistency of the Rambouillet is phenomenal. The
frames are straight, symmetrical, and defects or rejects are so rare that
we can't even remember the last one.

If you're looking for a comfortable, versatile road bike you can be proud
to own and can reasonably expect to be riding 20 years from now, a
Rambouillet is a great choice.

It comes in sizes 50 thru 68. The 5052cm frames use 26-inch wheels because
it's impossible to properly design a frame that small around 700c wheels.

Re: [RBW] Re: Are all blue Rambouillets 700c, and another frame question?

2015-07-03 Thread iamkeith
I'm certain it was to achieve proper geometry in the case of the
Rambouillet. But, for me, 26 is where its at anyway! In addition to my
60cm Ram, I have a 60cm All Rounder with 26 tires, and I will virtually
always choose that bike, no matter the conditions or type of ride
planned. The smaller wheels have less inertia, so they spin up faster -
so easier climbing and acceleration. The gyroscope of the wheels is
lower, so its more maneuverable at higher speed. The overall center of
mass is lower, so its more stable at moderate speeds. There's zero toe
clip overlap, even with fat tires and fenders. The arguments that make
sense for 29ers on mountain bikes (better attack angle for rough surfaces
and more momentum to roll over larger obstacles) really don't matter in a
road bike.

I've heard that Grant has said he doesn't want to go backwards and do a
larger 26 road bike again, but maybe the new Rat Trap Pass tires from
Compass will change that??I cant' wait to get my hands on them for this
bike.

everyone who does post amazing pictures here. extra respect if you're
carrying around a real camera. i brought mine, but didnt get it out once.
the only reason i even put these on flickr is to encourage myself to start
backing up photos in some way.
 pictures of proof HERE https://www.flickr.com/photos/133784882@N08/?

anyway, a lot of you have done this ride already, so i thought i'd make
this more of a gear review of things i hemmed and hawed about. things that
dont have a ton of information and reviews out there.
first and foremost, the hunqapillar was a worthy and loyal companion. i
feel closer to it now than ever before. right before leaving i put on a
sprung brooks, which resulted in pretty much zero butt pain, marathon
supremes which were flatless and cushy enough, and a medium saddlesack
which was able to fit 95% of the camping gear. left hand went numb about
halfway through and i wish i had brought some gloves. other than that,
 smooth sailing.

 ok:
*nemo gogo bivy tent thing*- loved it. its bigger than a bivy and
slightly smaller than a tent. the arch is inflatable with no poles, making
take down/pack down sooo easy and fast. it packs into a small compression
sack really easy. i can see hot weather+warm body=condensation, but i got
zero in 60-75 temps. the inflatable part is really robust and it has a
patch kit just in case. highly recommended for fast and light travel.
*goal zero solar panel-* just got the panel w/o battery. in retrospect,
because of my weird/dropped/got-wet-too-many-times phone that has a hard
time consistently charging, the battery wouldve been a good addition. also
really liked this set up. clipped it to the front or rear and left devices
in the little pouch and had power the entire trip.
*jandd mini mountain panniers*- had these up front and they were rock
solid. oddly, they were somewhat bigger than i needed, but they did the job
with zero issues over lots of bouncy terrain
*woolpower socks- *brought 3 pairs, wore only one the entire time. filthy
 but zero smells
*cheapish wool/poly blend boxers from core4element-*previously had a
bad run with all wool boxers that ripped after 2 rides. decided to try
these that were a little thicker and had some polyester mixed in. results
were definitely more durable. very comfortable, moisture wicking,
breathable etc. they acquired butt stench fairly easily, though not as bad
 as synthetic.
*wool t shirts by nau-*thin, breathable, comfortable, resisted BO.
unfortunately, nearing the end, they had started to disintegratenot
 worth 30$
*acorn tool roll*- super smart design. carried it like a mini pannier
*bicycling the pacific coast-* infuriatingly useless the majority of
the time, yet a real life saver on occassion. there has got to be a better
 carry-along book/map/guide for this trip.
*stanley pot/cup-*super cheap and small boiling pot with 2 nesting dbl
wall cups. i took a cup out and used the extra space to store the extra
alcohol for the stove. used this every day. great buy 15$$$

Not sure how much it will help with the 720's but I have had it make a
noticeable difference on other cantis. Also you could try thinner brake

always choose that bike, no matter the conditions or type of ride

That does sound pretty risky. First tell her that one that's really her

My wife ride her Atlantis for about 5 minutes in a parking lot before
rolling up with a big grin saying I've got to have this bike. This is
a woman who was not shopping for a bike, is not particularly into bikes,
and only rode it to humor me. Recently we visited RBWHQ because I wanted
to try one of long chainstay models. I urged her to look around while
we're here. She declined, saying she's happy with her Atlantis. I
returned from my test ride to see her disappear around the corner on a
Clementine. Time will tell.

Yea, Rivendell's will do that to people. It really is magical.

I was just out riding today with about a dozen girlfriends. They mostly had
hybrid type bikes and most were occasional riders. It was pretty cool because
Erin had her big 60 Cheviot and I had my little 46 Appaloosa which meant anyone
just about could take a Riv for a spin! Long chainstays and boscos like nothing
they'd ever seen much less ridden. Big smiles and comments like, I never knew
a bike could be so comfortable! The Cheviot (or, as we've come to call her,
the Big Girl) was quite a hit. We tried to interest a few in a
Clem/Clementine. It was great fun.

weight, it's main benefit is zero set up or pack up time. i have a self

more time to get going, occupies space in a bag etc... i use it mostly when
im staying in one spot for more than a night or car camping.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS 54 Saluki

2015-07-03 Thread James Warren
I remember the first batches not having one color; buyers had many choices. The
only stock color it ever had was the butterscotch, and that came later.

I remember admiring the colors of the early ones on this list: a burgundy
(Steve P's?), some beautiful greens, sage pea and a Coleman. I think I remember
a dark blue as well. And someone had a yellow that was true yellow, not
butterscotch.

Salukis with center pulls and Col de Vie's always struck my fancy, even though
they could never be in my 63+ size. I love how the bikes set up that way
screamed I know the things that work well on a bike. At that time, the center
pull brake combined with 650B tire were as smart as you could get, given that
both those parts were still far out of the mainstream then. Such a cool
development in bikes.

I was excited when this goodness was brought to the tall folks with AHH, but
when the models were rolled together, I wished that they had kept the Saluki
name. But I guess if they had, then the Saluki name would not mean exclusively
650B. The name Saluki is iconic in Riv history.

The Ram was designed in pre-650b-resurgence days. You are correct, the
26-inch wheel was used for geometry purposes.

Was that the reason for the 26 tire? I just figured it was to get the

the 700C sizes and most I have seen take advantage of that fact.

Even now, if what you wanted to build was a bike with 28mm tires you
most likely wouldn't choose 650B as the wheel size. I think the only
28mm 650B tire is the Confrerie Hutchinson. Everything else is 32mm or

Ah, you make a good point about frame details. If both frames were being

the ride quality outside of the fact that she loved the Ram. I would
describe the Ram as a road bike with more clearance and the Bleriot as a
country bike. They were both very nice bikes but the Ram was much nicer if
you inspected the details. I have only heard of problems on the early
(Orange) bikes and I thought they were all larger sizes.

If you want a more traditional road bike, get the Ram. If you want more of
a country/ gravel bike, get (keep?) the Bleriot.

Hi Jim, I have one of the very first run myself, and so I can verify that there
was a stock color sage/pea soup green--but so many came in unpainted that folks
very often got to choose their own color or got them perhaps before Riv chose
the color. I went with Riv red and canti's, not centerpulls (see recent
tweedster post for a photo) . The butterscotch color came with the script
decals. I still though have a question about whether there was a run of silvers
before the butterscotches. I know there was a last run of silver QB's, but when
I saw this silver saluki it jogged my foggy memory. Anyway, yes, Salukis are
the mark for the 650B (along with the Wilbury and Glorious).

I hope this beautiful and beautifully built up bike finds a good home!

2015-07-03 Thread drew
Hey Doug,
You're right. Information wise, it's not too off the mark, though it really
only presents one route. What I found infuriating was the half bullet
point/half description directions where the format shifts constantly. Keeping
it simple ie. Left on 2nd right on 3rd etc. would be ideal, but frequently
the specific directional change or multiple directional changes will be buried
in an opinion paragraph that shouldn't be in the bullet point direction parts.
Especially when there are already pages of opinion and description for each
section.

[RBW] New Olive ACW Mugs, new coffee? What kind of coffee/gear do you take on the bike?

2015-07-03 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
The RIV crowd seems to be fully steeped in the whole coffee outside
movement. Myself included. So I wanted to tap the wisdom of the group
regarding your coffee on the bike preferences.

With my last batch of ACW mugs, I did some special packages with limited
edition Columbia coffee beans roasted locally by Kaladi Coffee Co. They
sold out quick. Now with a new batch of mugs, I have the opportunity to
choose another coffee and do it again. Problem is, I rarely try different
varieties which made me wonder what everyone else is cooking up. Out of
that curiosity, I thought it would be interesting to compare your full
checklist of coffee outside gear preferences.

Bike: Atlantis - 26 fattys - Albatross
Bag: Baggins Little Joe seat mounted
Coffee: Kaladi Peru, or Ocean Air Cycles Hobo Roleur (pre ground at
home...for now) These are both a medium Viennese roast.
Stove: Caldera Keg
Ignition: Swedish firesteel
Brewer: Pourover or Aeropress, although I lean pourover on the bike.
Mug: ACW and Snowpeak
Accoutrements: Small plastic bottles to hold cream, coffee, and white fuel.
Separately of course. One or two bandanas. Pocket knife. I usually try to
pack food of some sort. Apples, almonds, cheese among my favorite.
Comfort: NOW with Hammock! I've only had chance to use it once, but it's
most likely permanent.
NEED: Small cutting board - Portable grinder (GSI or Porlexcant
decide???)

When I got my first Rivendell after my daughter was born 8 years ago, it
changed the way I rode for the happier. Adding mobile coffee to the
equation redoubled that enjoyment.

That points to the hanger alignment, or play in the the derailleur's
 parallelogram pivots.

The derailleur's mounting bolt can get slightly slightly bent and produce
similar behavior too. You can remove the C-clip and take the bolt out to
examine while turned into the hanger threads, watching for a wobble as
threaded in. A new RD is usually the best fix.Sometimes good luck in a bike
shop's recycling bin will net a similar RD that was tossed of other worse
failures that still has a good bolt still.

the only reason i even put these on flickr is to encourage myself to start
backing up photos in some way.

anyway, a lot of you have done this ride already, so i thought i'd make
this more of a gear review of things i hemmed and hawed about. things that
dont have a ton of information and reviews out there.
first and foremost, the hunqapillar was a worthy and loyal companion. i
feel closer to it now than ever before. right before leaving i put on a
sprung brooks, which resulted in pretty much zero butt pain, marathon
supremes which were flatless and cushy enough, and a medium saddlesack
which was able to fit 95% of the camping gear. left hand went numb about
halfway through and i wish i had brought some gloves. other than that,
 smooth sailing.

[RBW] Re: Are all blue Rambouillets 700c, and another frame question?

2015-07-03 Thread Fullylugged
The blue 50 and 52 were sold only as 26 because GP said you couldn't
design proper geometry in those sizes with 700s. I have a 52 with about
12K miles on it since getting it new from RBW and still love it. It takes
up to 37 mm tires (you have to let air out to get past the brakes though on
tires larger than 32mm). It has great proportions and a custom bike for me
would have the same dimensions I think.

 buying one???

My wife loves hers. I think it's really perfectly proportioned, too
 - when I look at it, I can't even imagine how you'd make a bike this
size work with 700c wheels, unless the headtube shrunk to the point that
the top tube and down tube lugs overlapped each other. She has never
complained about TCO either, which is great for someone that rides only
occasionally, and is something that I can only attribute to the smaller
 wheel.

I've never heard of any problems with the smaller sizes, so I'm not sure
what to say about that. Both of our Rams (her 50 and my 60) are from the
later end of the run. I think hers has slightly less tire clearance than
mine, but she doesn't like fenders so its not an issue.Still, she runs
1.25 (35) pasellas with clearance for miles, and has also run 1.6 (42)
Marathon Supremes - though they had to be aired-down to fit past the
 calipers.

So something went wrong with your drive train, and it is still wrong.
9 speed Shimano bar end shifting, in my experience of many tens of
thousands of miles, is never finicky unless something is failing.
One suspect is a fraying shift cable. Usually this happens right at the
shift lever so a broken strand pokes your finger and gives you early
warning of impending failure, but it's not the only possibility.

[RBW] Re: Where you on River Road Thursday?

2015-07-03 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
I no longer live in Minneapolis (and haven't since 1981) but there are a couple
of River Roads along the Mississippi there.

Re: [RBW] I can't get the shifting dialed in

2015-07-03 Thread Steve Palincsar

Steve, I think you're onto something - but the only places shifter

And I've /never/ seen one break there. Every shift cable that's been
replaced on my bikes over the years has frayed at the shifter. What's
more, most folks in the clubs I belong to use Shimano STI, and those
brifters have a known issue with cable breakage -- but unlike a bar end
shifter, where the fraying takes place outside the mechanism, where you
can see and feel it when it starts, STI fraying is hidden inside the
mechanism. The only clue you have is the gears start slipping about 2
miles before the cable fails completely -- and when it does, it often
leaves shards of broken cable inside the tiny gears. STI levers aren't
serviceable and aren't made to be disassembled, so sometimes those
shards of cable can't be removed and the entire unit must be replaced.
What joy!

Of course, fraying inside the shifter isn't the only way a cable can
fail, and fraying cables aren't the only possible source of imprecise
index shifting. Among other culprits are rusty or cracked broken
housings; bent derailleur hanger; housing collapsing where it fits into
the ferrule, effectively altering housing length and consequently cable
tension. And those are just off the top of my head, things I've seen on
the road or have had happen to my bikes over the years, not meant to be
an exhaustive list.

If this were my bike, I'd make a clean sweep of it and have the cables
and housings replaced, and have the alignment of the rear derailleur
checked at the same time. This is where most such problems originate,
and it's basically routine maintenance. If that doesn't fix the
problem, let the serious diagnostics begin. But keep this mantra in
mind: Shimano indexed 9 speed shifting is in general NOT finicky,
especially not with bar end shifters.

[RBW] Re: Are all blue Rambouillets 700c, and another frame question?

2015-07-03 Thread Johnny Alien
The 54 is for sure 700c. I thought only the 50 was a 26 wheel so I learned
something knew. A 52 with a 26 wheel seems really odd to me but I guess
that's what you got in the days before 650B in rivland.

Even now, if what you wanted to build was a bike with 28mm tires you
most likely wouldn't choose 650B as the wheel size. I think the only
28mm 650B tire is the Confrerie Hutchinson. Everything else is 32mm or
wider.

2015-07-03 Thread Johnny Alien
Was that the reason for the 26 tire? I just figured it was to get the
geometry better in a smaller size. I doubt many Riv buyers want a tire
slimmer than 32. I know the Ram could take larger than 28 tires even in
the 700C sizes and most I have seen take advantage of that fact.
