[RBW] WTT Moustache for Albatross or Boscos

2015-09-06 Thread Frank Brose
Title says it all. As much as I like Moustache bars as I age I'm seeming to
like Albatross better along with lower gears, fatter tires, yada, yada,
yada. You get the picture.
Thanks,
Frank

Yes, some over lap there.

I'm re-thinking my options right now as well... wanting some bikes with
larger tire capacity and tubeless tires, and trying to work out the best
way to get there!

Seems to me that if differences can only be detected under carefully
controlled conditions using power meters none of these tires are worth all
the fuss and expense. I'll stick with my $20 Vittoria Randonneur's.

You have discovered a way to make all tires seem supple and fast rolling: ride
15 miles on rumble strips then go out on a "regular" ride.

I'm going to recommend taking it in the opposite direction. Skip the
blasting and powder coat. Tackle the rust and just hit the bare spots with
a clear coat of rattle can, or wax. It will be way less attractive to
thieves and function just as well.

Re: [RBW] Rust, Repaint options and Realignment Questions.

2015-09-06 Thread George Schick

Yeah, after reading these threads I was going to recommend what Jay says.
Strip it as best as you can and if you don't want to just clear coat over
the striped frame, primer it with an "etching" primer, sand with fine 400
grit paper, clean as completely as possible with tack rag or air
compressor, and spray on an enamel rattle can of your choice. After it's
dried thoroughly you can go over the frame - especially the orange peel,
etc. - which you WILL have regardless of how carefully you try to spray
it, with rubbing or polishing compound. Get some "Resurrectio" decals from
Riv, apply 'em according to instructions and enjoy putting all the
components back in place. The only thing I would add is that after you've
striped, cleaned, and primed the frame, take it to a quality LBS and have
them align it, especially those stays. I did all the above to a "rescue"
Fuji Finest frame I found under similar circumstances that I wanted to turn
into a single-speed and it turned out like this:

Re: [RBW] FS - 61cm Atlantis, complete.

2015-09-06 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch

Yep, just too large to take it to the next step - fatter (than 35mm) tires. No
stand over room. I've recently that powder coat canti- Homer that I love for
mixed surface riding here on the east coast:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/17026382140/in/album-72157651662871709/

And, I sold my old 2010 double TT Hillborne in favor of a smaller single TT
Black & Cream Hillborne (for touring):

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/19527279914/in/album-72157656598945451/

So, with 8 bikes, something had to go! (That, and I need two crowns on molars!)

I've loved the Atlantis and would have moved it to "touring" mode if there were
more stand over. All in all, I've have over 6,000 miles on it and selling for
about what I paid in 2011. I hope I don't regret it! Should I? I hope not. The
tubing seems a bit stiff, though I did not mind it. And, I really never cured
the chainsuck problem entirely, probably due to the "80's-style" chain stays
(not oval / not crimped).

[RBW] FS: Price Reduced! Berthoud GB2886 Handlebar Bag and Decaleur!

2015-09-06 Thread 'Jim Cloud' via RBW Owners Bunch

For Sale: Price Reduced! Once more around before the Bay… Berthoud GB2886
black handlebar bag with Velo Orange Decaleur. This handlebar bag is the
deluxe model with leather strap closures and an interior pocket for
identification, etc. It is largest one that Berthoud produces and should
be used with a decaleur (included).. See the Berthoud website for
dimensions -
http://www.gillesberthoud.fr/anglais/fiche_detaillee/fiche.php?refArticle=321GB2886/N

This handlebar bag is in virtually new condition with very little usage and
no staining from rain or deterioration by sun exposure. I have found that
my cycling baggage needs are satisfied by a saddlebag, and really don’t use
a handlebar bag. Photos of the bag, including the decaleur and its
mounting on my bicycle are here –

https://www.flickr.com/photos/37964304@N05/albums/72157656508743292

The handlebar bag includes the accessory shoulder strap for carrying off
the bike. This is a very nice handlebar bag which Jan Heine rightly calls
the standard for this type of bag. Sale is by PayPal only for $285.00 (*NOW
$250.00*) which includes shipment (no international sales).

Please contact me off list.

[RBW] Re: Rust, Repaint options and Realignment Questions.

2015-09-06 Thread George Schick
Actually, it's not all that difficult. The frame in the pic I posted had
126mm rear dropout spacing and I wanted 120mm so I could use an existing
hub I had. So I followed Sheldon's instructions
at http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html and everything worked
perfectly. The only reason I took it to an LBS is to have them check to
make sure the rear drop-out's remained parallel during my respacing process
by using these
tools
http://www.parktool.com/product/frame-and-fork-end-alignment-gauge-set-FFG-2
, way too expensive for me to buy for a one-time project like this, but the
LBS only charged me $20 to do it.
The fork was beyond rescue so I bought one of those general purpose ones
from a web retailer and took it from there (Riv has a couple of great ones
for sale if you need a new one and want to pop the bucks for one of theirs).

2015-09-06 Thread Peter Adler
I recall reading a tip on one of the de-rustificator's websites (either
Metal Rescue or Evapo-Rust): Soak rags or paper towels in Metal rescue,
wrap it around the frame (and inside the BB shell), then seal the soaked
rags/towels in place with plastic wrap. Unwrap after desired exposure time.

If you really want to get hung-ho with it, get a kid's wading pool, lay the
frame on its side, immerse in Metal Rescue.

I find myself, too adjusting out chain noise on the FD from time to time,
so this morning I ran a test. Not sure if it was OCD or a desire to avoid
obsessing over FD adjustment, but on a climb where I needed my

then just dialed it out. Made the rest of the ride using 8 gears down to
the smallest 12t cog and back up without ever adjusting the FD.

[RBW] Re: Tested 6 pairs of 700c (29in) tires - results and impressions

2015-09-06 Thread Takashi
Thank you Jan.
I have enjoyed reading your articles in blog and BQ, and they inspired me
to do the test.
As an amateur cyclist, my time to ride bike is limited, so I cannot say for
sure how many times I will ride the same route.
I like to visit places I have never seen, rather than riding same route
over and over.
(I'm pretty sure that most people in this group understand this inclination)
Still, I am interested in performances of tires myself, so when I do
further test, I will post about it.

I have read in your blog (comment section maybe) that you consider Furious
Fred and Thunder Burt as too much off-road-oriented, but I think they were
very smooth and efficient on pavement.
So I am expecting to read reviews of those tires in future issues of BQ.

[RBW] WTB: 50cm Rambouillet or 51cm Roadeo

2015-09-06 Thread Fullylugged
The 50 and 52 Rams are 26" (559) size wheels. They are smaller than a 50 for
700 wheels will be. Just FYI. I take a 50 in a 700, but ride a 52 Ram.

[RBW] Re: Rust, Repaint options and Realignment Questions.

2015-09-06 Thread Garth

Personally , I'd take it/send it to a frame builder who can thoroughly
inspect it, align it , replace any tubes or anything that needs it, and
repaint it. In Ohio I know of such a person , but obviously this is not LA
! Being in LA, maybe such persons don't exist there , I have no idea .

This assumes of course, you *absolutely* want this frame and it is worth
investing in.

[RBW] FS - 61cm Atlantis, complete.

2015-09-06 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I never thought I'd do this, but must cull the herd and this one is now
overlap - and is the one most likely to sell. If not one size too large for
me, I would build it up with fat tires and keep riding it. I purchased it
in Dec. 2011 from someone whom had Rivendell build it up but apparently did
not take to it. When I got it, it had about 200 miles on it. It came with
fenders, but I added front & rear mini racks, Soma interrupter levers, and
PDW fender stay breakaways. Also, I had a bit of chainsuck, so dropped the
middle ring down 2 teeth (to 34) and replaced the 109mm Shimano BB with a
pricey SKF 113mm to get a bit more room down there. I'm selling complete
except for pedals and computer.

I'm probably pushing the envelope on the price - $3,000, PayPal preferred,
shipped free CONUS, via Bike Flights and will ship fenders separately. A
build like this would be over $4,000. This is the nicest used Atlantis
you'll see for sale! No dents or scratches (except the touched-up

Adjust the brakes.

Could be as simple as toe in, but chatter should not be happening, so
perhaps a full adjustment at your LBS?

I ride my Hunqapillar at high speed down mountain passes (dirt and paved)

Good luck getting it solved, and I look forward to hearing ride reports
about how you and your Hunqapillar get along.

the powdercoater company here in bellingham strips frames chemically and
then you can have it sand or garnet blasted after that if you want. we have
a local frame builder here too.

there is also a gentleman named Blake who will come out of his house and
sandblast a frame in his carport for 25$.

how much money do you want to put into a beater frame you want for a
lockuip bike? if you are going to put 100$ of shop time into aligning a
frame
wouldnt it be cheaper and easier to pay 150-200 for a frame with better
paint and straight, in the first place? or go with powedercoating it and
riding it
for years till the alignment became a perceptable problem? not as much fun,
to do it that way, ...

Thanks for the bb closing recommendations. Both seem more thought out than what
I did. I'll give it a go today.
It is unlikely that I'll have it realigned. I don't really think it's that big
of an issue, I was just wanting to make sure that it didn't need to be
realigned. And of course, one could find a nicer/straighter frame for more
money, but that would take away the magic of rescuing this almost free, almost
disposed of frame.

[RBW] Re: Rust, Repaint options and Realignment Questions.

2015-09-06 Thread Andy.M
I recall using a couple of blocks of wood a clamp and and an old tube used
as a gasket to seal up the BB on a rusty old frame that I pick up. seemed
to work okay, just make sure that the clamp is aligned well and I had the
bike on a stand with a drip tray beneath it.

[RBW] Re: computer analysis & steel tubing sweet spot

2015-09-06 Thread Justin August
That's my point. Data & Experince allows you to determine preference. There is
no best when it comes to experiences. This goes for brewing coffee, building
buchcles and tuning car engines. The more information you have the better you
can tailor something to your preference but that can and will be different than
my preference.

Thanks Kurt, I'm going to hold out for a complete, as my last build up was

[RBW] Judder on the Hunqa

2015-09-06 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have Tektro cantilever brakes on my 58cm Hunq. The brake judder, even at low
to moderate speed, is so violent that the front wheel skips off the ground. I
would be afraid to do a fast descent. I hardly ever ride the bike and that is
one of the reasons why. What should I do?

[RBW] Re: computer analysis & steel tubing sweet spot

2015-09-06 Thread Garth

Well Justin . . .. all of this assumes there is a constant, a fixed
reference point .

There is no consensus on the origin of Life , let alone even what Life is,
so I find it no more than our self double-talk that we could find any
Absolute in a world of relativity . I'm not saying it's all pointless and
don't bother because "man" can't help themselves in trying to figure it all
out , I'm saying the "the more information man has" , the clearer it is we
really know nothing as man. So man goes and invents even more determinately
to ease the sense of powerlessness. Yet the very effort to ease it only
ends up compounding it.

But hey this reply and I too will be forgotten and the search will go
on , just because . and that's alright ;-) I know nothing as man
either . And this is not in any way meant to de-tour the topic, I'm just
stating where I am coming from .

[RBW] Re: Tested 6 pairs of 700c (29in) tires - results and impressions

2015-09-06 Thread Jan Heine
Takashi,

First of all, I apologize for butchering your name...

Please do report on further testing you do, but I totally understand that
testing is a tedious job. I can tell you when we did the rumble strip test,
and I had to ride 15 miles on rumble strips over the course of a morning, I
was glad to just go for a spin the following day on comparatively smooth
roads.

We'll consider the Furious Fred and Thunder Burts when we next test tires
on the track with a power meter under carefully controlled conditions.
Thank you for the suggestion.

Best,
