electrolysis is killing hair follicles. However, you might get enough
galvanic difference between a brass valve stem and bare (anodize-free or

If you have corrosion, odds are, it has nothing todo with dissimilar
metals. It's because you have a place to collect gunk.
However, you could have fretting, which is a combination of contact fatigue

Which gets back to my o-rings being the solution.

Rim tape seems fine. No burrs on valve stem hole. I put an extra layer
of Velox tape over to reinforce the area. Cut out a small 1X1cm of tube
 and
slipped over the valve stem to reinforce that. I don't over-tighten the

Running out of options here! Any suggestion? If not, is this possibly a
warranty issue for defective rim? I'd hate to send it back and have
Velocity write about me on their blog.

I noticed the assertion about plantar fasciitis, too, and went, "What? Plantar
fasciitis isn't viral."

Similarly, I looked up metals poisoning the other morning, and while yes,
aluminum disrupts the function of the blood brain barrier, symptoms are only
ever seen in people with renal (kidney) failure. Our kidneys seem to do a great
job of scrubbing aluminum out of our bodies.

Aluminum doesn't seem to be present in cigarette smoke, but other metals are.
Not enough to scare me, especially compared to breathing in smoke.

Thanks for the interesting conversation! I'm now much less concerned about
ingesting aluminum, and more appreciative of my kidneys.

Well, I've got a pair of Switchback Hills mounted on my Saluki (admittedly,
without fenders), and they fit fine. I even gave some thought to trying to jam
some fenders in there, but concluded that discretion was the better part of
valor, and all that…

I can measure them tonight, but I think they're stretched to just about just
about 49mm on 23mm rims. The EL version.

The Saluki was designed back when 38mm was the widest 650B available.
Hetres only just fit.

The early Salukis won't fit much more than the Fatty Rumpkin or Hetre. The
later runs with the kickstand plates will take a larger tire but by that
time the 60 and 62 sizes were discontinued.

As much as some of us like to generalize, there are some details of various
Rivendell models that evolved over time.

If one of you forced $3500 into my greedy hands today and forced me to
order a custom Rivendell right now, I might choose a bike that has sloping
(single) TT like a Hillborne, has the lightest tubing Grant is comfortable
with like a Roadeo or Legolas, has cantilever brakes and is built around
the Switchback Hill tires plus fenders. It would have a low BB like a road

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Roadeo

2015-09-23 Thread Tim Gavin
Don-

The BB is crazy low now.

My Riv Road has 80 mm of BB drop, and my conversion from 700 x 25 to 650 x
38 dropped it another 6 mm.

I use 170 mm cranks and I still need to be careful not to pedal in turns,
and to keep my pedals level when off-roading.

However, the very low BB gives the bike great handling and a low stepover.
Not a bad trade-off, especially with my overwhelming preference for the 650
x 38 tires.

Sorry to come in late on this. Velocity replaced my rear rim.

The first time I saw it seemed to be an electrolysis issue which is how I

[RBW] Re: Compass Switchback Hills (650BX48)

2015-09-23 Thread Zach Duval
I'll settle for my Hillborne running Switchbacks, eventually. It'll be
awhile before I can splurge on a new tire set, but I've definitely made my
mind up that they are pretty darn close to ideal for the riding I do (20ish
miles on pavement to large swathes of fireroads as well as some
singletrack, pushing the bike to its limits for the latter until I can
afford a Hunqa MTB).

Fenders will probably be going on again soon anyway, so I'll have to settle
for 38s through the wet season. When I do eventually get the Switchbacks,
I'll post ride reports for sure.

2015-09-23 Thread David Banzer
You're nearly describing how my Redwood is set up right now - 650b
conversion with room for Vee Rubber Speedsters (47mm actual), crossing
fingers that Switchbacks will fit (chainstay width issue only) - there is
definitely room for fenders. Top tube doesn't slope like a Hillborne though
and brakes are Tektro long reach calipers. The tubing is on the lighter
side, road bike design, low BB (well, maybe too low with 77mm drop).

[RBW] Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-23 Thread Edwin W
Argj! Just got another valve base tear on THAT rim. Kenda tube. I got some
schwalbes and was explaining the fix to my 9 year old son.
Me: I think the fix is these expensive tubes. See, they have reinforcement in
that area.
Him: how much are they?
Me: expensive. 8 bucks.
Him: that doesn't sound like much. How much are the cheap ones?
Me: 5.
Him: sounds worth it.
Wisdom doesn't always come with age. We will see if they work!!

Re: [RBW] Re: My New Roadeo

2015-09-23 Thread Don Compton
Bill,
May of 1974 at the NCAA tournament, I was fortunate to be partnered with
Peter Jacobsen in the North-South matches the day before the tournament
began. It was best ball ( 4 ball ) and we kicked the other team's ass.I
didn't help much.

Yeah, these Roadeos make great road bikes. I have the saddle on mine
about even with the stem, which I find comfortable and I can still use the
drops on my Mark's bar fine.

I'm generally passing people while decending and this bike gives me
total confidence while doing so, even when the road twists and turns. I
 did
a rather difficult 62 mile charity ride on this past Saturday that was
hilly and ridiculously windy (no tailwinds either because it just turned
out that way) and the bike was fine. I was tired afterwards, but never
 once
uncomfortable. This specific route had some truly terrible roads on it,
something which I actually brought up with the organizer. One downhill was
 just destroyed and had that gravelly (sp?) loose chip stuff all over it;
apparently this was a failed attempt to fix the various potholes and
irregularities. I was glad I had the Roadeo on that one and other riders
were complaining up a storm afterwards because of the condition and how
they had to slow way down. I didn't slow down because the bike can handle
 that stuff fine.

[RBW] FS: 1989 Rockhopper. 19.5in. f/f/wheels/extras

2015-09-23 Thread drew
having to move somewhat quickly and need to abandon this bike. it's an 89
rockhopper in very good condition in a nice color way. selling it as frame
and fork with bb, wheels, headset, stem, seatpost, brakes and matching
bottle cages. can include some cheapo brake levers tires and seat too. the
specialized catalogue makes no distinction between this frame and the
stumpjumper frame of 1989. same specs and tubing. a few light scuffs and
touch ups, but very clean. no dents, dings, rust. etc. wheels are araya
somethingorother.

looking for 150$ to a local buyer near los angeles.
