[RBW] FS: Black Sheep Ti Fat Fork with Bontrager Jackalope Wheel & Hodag Tire

2015-09-24 Thread Anne

*Black Sheep Ti Fat Fork with Bontrager Jackalope Wheel & Hodag Tire *

Great upgrade to your current fattie OR have some fun with your regular
mountain bike (straight 1 1/8" head tube OR OS head tube will work with
this fork)

Black Sheep ti fork accommodates 135QR front hub, plenty of steerer tube to
fit any bike (224mm or 8 13/16" if you prefer).

The fork is 440mm AC and 55mm offset. The axle to crown essentially a
midpoint between non-suspension corrected 29er and a 80mm travel fork. Have
used it on both a 29er built for a 100 travel and a 27.5 built for 100
travel. Undetectable change other than the plush ride of the ti fork and
the added cushion and velcro-like hook-up of the light front wheel. Great
addition to any rigid non-fat bike (think Surly Krampus only lighter). New
forks from Black Sheep start at $700 and have a long wait.

The fork has an 1.5 King baseplate for an OS or tapered head tube (or can
be swapped to an 1 1/8 one if you have an 1 1/8" headtube) and an adaptor
for post mount 160 rotor brake. With the star nut, brake adaptor and base
plate the fork is 850g. The Hodag tire mounts up tubeless super easy on the
Jackalope wheel. Nice light combination! The wheel with tape and valve is
1290g, 75 internal width. The Hodag tire is 1190g, 3.8 inches wide and
measures closer to 4 inches. Wheel and tire are the absolute easiest to get
set tubeless of any tire/rim combo I've dealt with. Amazing! Get a front
wheel that closes the gap from your current beast and the HED carbon
wonder wheel. This wheel set up tubeless in one quick snap and doesn't need
mega cups of sealant dumped in it.

Half dozen rides on it (less than 50 miles total), the nubbins are still on
the tire.

Plenty of details on the wheel/tire in the review on mtbr
http://reviews.mtbr.com/review-bontrager-hodag-tire-and-jackalope-wheels-fat-bike-tubeless-system

Message me for complete photo set.

Options follow, shipping is additional (please PM zip for accurate shipping
cost).

Package price for wheel, tire and ti fork, rotor: $695

Above but w/o tire $650

Fork only $495

Wheel with tire & rotor $300

Wheel (bare w/o tire or rotor) $250

Thanks for looking,

Anne

2015-09-24 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi, all.

Well, I'm no longer hopeful. Now I see several of the "still available" (i. e.
still on the website) are in fact almost gone. That leads me to conclude the
MUSA line is heading for "hiatus" at least, as RBW indicated earlier. I'm glad
I have at least one pair of knickers that fit. For long pants I shall make do
with my XXL pants I guess.

Are there actual alternatives out there?

RE: [RBW] Re: 'tines are comin'!

2015-09-24 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I just looked it up on the Schwalbe site -- it's called the Big One, and it's
spec'd at 584 X 60mm. But the website says it's "new for 2016", and it's not
on the North American Schwalbe retail site yet. Here's the description:

"Son of the Beach.

The inspiration for this cannonball belongs to our Dutch neighbors. In winter,
their passion for MTB competitions moves on to the beach. We wanted to create
“only” the fastest tires for beach racing. Huge volume. Minimal profile.
Minimum weight. In addition the latest Tubeless Easy technology. The result is
a tire with the lowest rolling resistance we have ever created."

Sounds pretty cool. Sounds like it's not going to be available in time for
Christmas (my deadline).

the new compass tyres are tempting too. I can't remember the name of the

What are you thinking for rims? I've been looking for wide-ish 584 rims for
'normal' brakes but I haven't turned up a lot.

Waiting patiently for another (as yet unimagined) project…

Of course, they might go back on the Saluki if the Retroshifters don't pan out.

Here's the build – it just needs the bars taped. I think I'm going to try a
harlequin wrap again (the emotional pain from my first botched attempt seems to
have receded with time). I've been working to get this shaken down before
Pondero's C&O ride beginning October 6.

The shifters are a little unusual – Retroshift combo shifters and levers, with
the shifters mounted in front of the hoods above the levers. I haven't ridden
with them yet, but I thought they looked interesting to try. Pic here:

Here's the best I could get of the fork clearance:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/21480950709/in/dateposted-public/

Not a lot of excess room, but certainly fine without fenders. (BTW, on
Velocity Synergy rims they measure just 48mm, not 49mm, as I previously
reported. Pumped up to around 30 to 32 psi.)

Here's an even worse pic of the chainstay clearance:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/21641680116/in/dateposted-public/

Quite tight, but still acceptable without fenders. No way with fenders of any
kind.

OK, clear to join!

Here's my plan, Chris. I'll take the train down to DC Monday night and have
dinner with #3 son. I'll meet up with you guys at Fletchers Boathouse (I'll
plan to get there before 9 on Tuesday the 6th, to minimize the risk of missing
the "train").I'll camp with the crew at Indian Flats on Tuesday night. My
hope is to leave my tent, etc. at the campsite on Wednesday morning, ride with
you as far as Harper's Ferry, then peel off and spend a few hours poking around
the historical sites there before returning to Indian Flats Wednesday night.
Up early Thursday, return to DC, and train back to Wilmington.

Anybody have an assessment of risk of leaving tent, bag and pad at the campsite
for the day?

Okay locals, I've coordinated with my family, factored in our constraints, and
even exchanged a couple of emails with Tony DeFilippo to get some tips. Here
is our plan for the C&O tour "rolling start" for any who wish to simply say
"hi", ride with us a while, our ride with us all the way to Cumberland.

Our start date is Tuesday, October 6.

Our train that includes friend (Steve Butcher), son-in-law (Carey Jones), and
me will depart out of Silver Spring, MD. We'll make two stops to meet up with
folks. The first stop will be in Bethesda. We will meet up at 0830 at
Bethesda Bagels (http://www.bethesdabagels.com/) and plan to roll out by 0915.
That allows us to reach our next stop at Fletchers Boathouse (C&O rendezvous)
by 0945ish. From there we'll head north on the C&O for a few days. For any
who might be joining us for part of the way, we plan to lunch in Leesburg that
Tuesday, and camp the first night at the Indian Flats hiker/biker site at
approx. mile 42.

I believe Tony is planning to join us for the first day and overnight. I
recall that Rusty, Erl, Jeff, Kellie, and Minh have all expressed interest in
some level of participation. I hope to meet several of you on this trip...and
thanks again to everyone who offered planning help!

Re: [RBW] Re: Has anyone used this Look-to-SPD adaptor? Are they any good? Do the cleats hold up well?

2015-09-24 Thread Patrick Moore
I didn't look closely enough to see that the CB's adaptor is for CB's
cleats. (Perhaps that should be "CBs'.")

If the Wellgos don't accept standard Shimano cleats, forget them.

Has anyone used the Sidis? Do they raise the shoe hugely?

I have a pair of Sidi road shoes that are comfortable, and I'd like to
adapt them to the new Ritchey road SPD pedals.

As for SPDs, Wellgo, Onza, Ritchey, etc: my own experience is that Shimano
cleat/pedal combination insert and extract better.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone used this Look-to-SPD adaptor? Are they any good? Do the cleats hold up well?

2015-09-24 Thread Peter Adler
Customer reviews of SPD to Crank Brothers isn't really a fair comparison.
Shimano-style SPD mountain pedals are used by orders of magnitude more
riders than Crank Brothers, so it's logical that SPD would have more
advocates. In courts of public opinion, the majority opinion usually wins,
even if it's silly.

The two different Look adapter sets (Wellgo RC8
, Crank Brothers
3-hole cleat )
include both 3-hole adapters and cleats, but they cleat to entirely
different pedals. You choose the adapter system to mate to your preferred
pedals. The Crank Brothers adapters can fit SPD cleats, but the Wellgo SPD
adapters don't look like they'll accept Crank Brothers cleats - or Time
ATAC cleats, or Speedplay cleats, or Bebop cleats, all of which have larger
bases than SPD. The Wellgo adapters look like they're molded to fit SPD
adapters, and nothing else. Actually, it looks like they've disassembled
the regular Shimano SPD cleat into two parts (the brass horizontal bar and
the underlying silver top/bottom lobes). If that's true, then that's
super-awful; it means that you won't be able to buy regular SPD replacement
clets, but you'll have to buy special weirdo cleats from Wellgo - which
will be available only for as long as Wellgo chooses to make them
available. Ecch.

I'd really like to be wrong about that, if only because forcing people to
buy replacement parts from a single manufacturer is a generally bad thing.
In Wellgo's case, it would be a case of spending extra money to lock people
into the replacement chain; Wellgo already makes standard SPD cleats (98A)
, so the expense of
making an nearly-identical cleat seems pretty wasteful.

The Crank Brothers adapters are a sort of nylon. I've been a CB rider for
years, and I hoard the discontinued Quattro road pedals (for which the
3-hole Look adapters were originally designed). Since CB uses the same
cleat for both mountain and road pedals, I normally ride the Quattro pedals
on my daily rider with mountain shoes, just because they're easier for
walking around. I've got a set of road shoes with adapter-ized cleats, but
they don't get a lot of use; like other bulky road cleats (Look, Time,
SPD-SL), I wouldn't want to duck-walk around in them, for fear of slipping
and breaking my butt-bone.

>From the Amazon photo, the Wellgo adapters look to be metal, but they don't
say. Wellgo is a Taiwanese OEM company, and their English site has no
information about the RC8 at all, aside from the image. Obviously, if
they're metal, they'll last longer; but who knows?

If what you need is a 3-hole shoe-to-2-hole cleat adapter *without* the
cleat, Sidi has one:

http://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?page=8&description=SPD+Adapter+Plate&vendorCode=SIDI&major=5&minor=7

I don't think this is really a "which adapter is better?" question; I think
this is really a "which cleated pedal system is better?" question. That's a
very individual question, which is hard to answer except by direct
experiment. My own first attempt with cleated pedals was with the
double-sided platform+SPD system that (if memory recalls) was from Wellgo;
they were cheapies from Nashbar about seven years back. I could never get
used to them; I never mastered the technique of cleating in and out. I'd
think I was cleated in and then my leg would fly out; I'd think I was
cleated out, and I'd fall down with the bike on top of me.

Crank Brothers were comparatively easy for me; cleating in and out was a
breeze. I now ride CB (older Candys and discontinued Quattros) on all my
cleated bikes. I like the little bit of float they give me; I like the
adjustable disconnect angle; I like the fact that I can use the same cleats
on both road and mountain pedals. But that's just my own preference; YMMV.

My recommendation for anyone who wants to try cleated shoes/pedals, either
for the first time or on a daily around-town bike, is to try SPD mountain
shoes/pedals first. Since they're Shimano, they're more widespread than
other systems; accordingly, they're widely copied (hello Wellgo and
Ritchey!) and cheaper. If SPDs don't work for you, figure out why they
don't work, and try another system that sounds like it addresses your
problem.

2015-09-24 Thread Matthew J
Probably should set up a Burnt Hole in MUSA Pants While Camping sub group!

The soft nylon fabric that makes them so comfortable and adaptable to
different temperatures with changes in base layers does mean they are more
vulnerable to burns.

In my defense, a fellow camper insisted on stocking the camp fire with sap
filled pine logs that blew off embers onto me.

At least one pair survived intact.

Might be the angle – I know that I'm more willing to accept tight tolerances
than many, and my comment was intended to take others' desires for more
generous clearance into account. But it's true that I think tight clearances
ought to be more acceptable in the absence of fenders, and their tendency to
scoop up potential jammer-sticks, etc.

Unclear whether the request is for pics of the clearance with the Switchbacks,
or of the new coupled Saluki build, so a couple of each are below.

Pic here:

[RBW] MUSA Pants?

2015-09-24 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Last thing I recall was that the entire MUSA program was being reconsidered.
That was earlier in the summer I think. But as far as I can tell only the pants
and non-black knickers have become unavailable since. So I'm hopeful that what
sounded "dire" earlier was my misreading the signals and in fact the absence of
pants and/or knickers has been a seasonal thing.

However, if/when the pants come back it would not surprise me if they are only
in black and/or cost >$100. Neither would be great but both would be
understandable IMHO.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Re: [RBW] Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-24 Thread Edwin W
I had an extra piece of velox rim tape on there. This time I took that off
and slid an extra piece of tube over the valve.

I will test it out this weekend. Might consider a little duct tape, too.

Does anyone who has a sale space have any room for a few items? I don't have

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Switchback Hills (650BX48)

2015-09-24 Thread Minh
Hmm i seem to remember near the end of the Saluki run that they morphed
into Hilsens or was it the other way around that the final Salukis got
badged at Hilsens?

Intersting that Tom's Saluki is an outlier, i think that makes it more
desirable than a standard Saluki!

[RBW] MUSA Pants?

2015-09-24 Thread Matthew J
Just got back from a 10 day cycle camping trip around Glacier NP where my
MUSA pants performed wonderfully. That is until I managed to burn a hole
in one of them.

So I went to the RBW site figuring I would buy a new pair or two only to
see none there.

Hoping this is a temporary. I do not recall any recent Blug posts on
point. Anyone know what's up?

Re: [RBW] Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-24 Thread Doug Williams
I have been very happy with my tubeless Babyshoe Pass tires. See my post on
this list. If you stick with tubes, try duct tape. You could reinforce the
rim hole or the valve stem. Remember...if you can't fix it, duck it!
