[RBW] Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-06 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wayne, it sounds like you're not asking for advice, but folks are chiming in.
I'll add my barely two cents worth.

Have you written a monthly family budget, carefully listing all of your
necessary and elective expenses? Have you written a business plan for the farm
including a projection of any funds necessary to get started? Have you
projected your income over the next 12, 24, 36 months?

The answers to many questions will be found in the spreadsheets.

A suggestion from my own experience: I used to use a spreadsheet tab for every
month's budget. I no longer do that. I now keep an entire year on one page just
stacking the months one after another in vertical columns. I leave a few blank
lines scattered through the columns, in anticipation of items that weren't
listed in the previous months. My wife and I have a meeting on the first
Wednesday of every month, and by the time we're done with the previous month's
numbers, we know exactly how that month treated us financially.

Another comment: once you have your budget built, it's easy to run models with
different assumptions, like reduced income or extra expenses, or dipping into
your savings on a regular basis over a number of months.

Re: [RBW] Re: Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-06 Thread Patrick Moore
Wayne: I hope you'll chronicle your farming experience on this list, the
listmeister willing. Somehow, wealthy urban axes are faintly ridiculous (I
don't fault Riv for selling them; good tools are a gift from God, even if
they are expensive; it's the context, which most of us share, and which is
not our fault: it is our suburban/urban way of life that is the foolish
thing.) But good axes and other equipment on a farm -- that makes eminent
sense, and the upshot is, there is perhaps little more Rivendellian than
honest work on a small, family owned, lovingly worked farm.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for reflective vests?

2015-10-06 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I don't know... I guess I'm of the opinion that when it comes to safety,
form and function conflict too much. I pack along a big ol' ugly DOT
safety vest when I need to really be seen (over my comfortable and stylish
'whatever' underneath)...it lights me up like a neon sign. I don't care
if drivers think "nice vest there, sport"... I want them to think "Holy

Wayne, you're not alone... Just remember things happen for a reason... One
door closes, others open...

Nothing like pairing the words 'scary' with 'exciting'... that's what
motivates us to make things happen... I say do whatever it takes...
whether it's selling other bikes, unessential possessions, picking up extra
work, etc...start socking away the Clem fund in your coffee can, little by
little.. you've got time before you need to pay for it... MAKE IT HAPPEN,
KEEP THAT CLEM!!!... it's something you will be especially proud of (having
made it happen despite the challenges).

Best of luck, move ahead and don't look back. Live life to its fullest,
craziest, and scariest/excitingest!! *(Patrick Moore must be cringing at
my butchering of the English language)* We're with you.

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers

2015-10-06 Thread Liesl
Jan, I love the idea of these kickers. Is it possible to share some inseam
information? I would love a pair, but I fear at 5'2" and with
comparatively skinny calves, the following three things might happen: 1)
the articulated knees would fall midway down my shins, 2) my calves
wouldn't hold them up in the knicker position because overall they're too
long, and 3) when extended, the pant legs might drag under my heals because
the inseam is 32 or 34. But if I knew that there was a length that was
equivalent to, say, a 28" or 30" inseam, then I'd be all over it!

yours, Liesl (who has experienced all of the above issues with beautiful
knickers)

[RBW] Re: Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-06 Thread iamkeith
Sorry to hear about the trials you're facing, Wayne. As someone who
chooses to live in BFE himself, despite the economic sacrifices of doing
so, it sounds like this may be a blessing of sorts. Hopefully you can look
back on it some day and see it that way.

Obviously, you need to do whatever is prudent and necessary to survive at
the moment. I tend to buy bikes precisely when work is slowest - but when
I have time to use them - rather than when I have lots of work and extra
discretionary funds - but when I am too busy to use or think about them.
So I might not have the clearest, most rational head about these things -
but here are my thoughts:

It's pretty clear how much you've been looking forward to this. Seems
like it would be a shame to back out just a few days before it arrives,
after all this waiting. I'd say get it and see how much you like it,
before getting rid of it. You can still always sell it and, at the
introductory price you paid, suffer little to no financial penalty. In
the meantime, this is also a good reason not to spend anything on
"upgrades" or personalization, that would diminish the collectible/concours
status. Remember that you happen to have one of the sought-after,
ultra-rare, limited-edition versions that came stock with *clear-coated
decals* ;-)

You might want to framesaver it and/or keep it indoors when you get to
Michigan, too. I'm not sure where you live at the moment but, if memory
serves, it can get pretty humid in most of Michigan, and I think they salt
the roads in the winter.Best of luck wherever choices and circumstances
lead you!

[RBW] PSA: Cunningham medical fund

2015-10-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
https://www.gofundme.com/w85tn3dg

Charlie Cunningham suffered a head injury (among other injuries) in a bike
crash. If you've ever felt the twang to thank Charlie for his visionary
contributions to cycling (particularly cycling off pavement), this is a
good opportunity to act on that twang.

thoughts, prayers, and a few dollars

Some spendy shoes that I purchased earlier this year:

http://arcteryx.com/ProductFind.aspx?language=EN=Footwear=Shoes

We have had some wet weather lately, of the kind that would have inundated
my previous go-to gore tex hikers and blundstones, and these worked dandy.
Stiff sole in the approach shoes works well with my grip kings.

[RBW] FS: Pair of Hetres

2015-10-06 Thread Lungimsam
Pair of Hetres for sale. Bought from Compass Cycles. Mounted on my Bleriot
and ridden for a very short time before being taken off and replaced by
Compass 38mm tires for better fender clearance.

Treads are great. Sidewalls look good and clean. No rain smutz.

Both have very thin, almost undetectable (except for neurotic close up
looking), superficial split around circumference where a molding line is.
My Rivish LBS (College Park Bikes) said it is cosmetic and irrelevant. I
forgot the exact explanation. I think they said something about an
overlaying layer of rubber where that happens and it means nothing. Every
Panaracer tire I have had developed these. Yours probably has them too if
you look close enough.

100$ shipped CONUS. Pics if you like.

[RBW] Re: Compass Knickers

2015-10-06 Thread Jan Heine
I don't think any of the "domestic" knickers are quite so sophisticated in
their cut, and quite as performance-oriented. It's like many of the
mainstream "classic" bikes, which go for the look of a classic, but not
necessarily get the performance right.

The Compass knickers really are incredibly light, and they really do
disappear when you ride. I rode 2/3 of PBP this year without them and 1/3
with them, and there was no difference in speed or feel. I can't say that
about other knickers, which often work remarkably well, but I am always
aware that I am wearing them.

Or to put it another way, these are the only knickers I'd ever do hill
intervals in. Not that you should do hill intervals, but basically, these
are intended for riders who don't want to compromise performance, but who
don't like the look of tight-fitting lycra.

$1500 or whatever the Clem costs is cheap for a Riv, but expensive for a
bike. If you need a bike, you can pick up something used on CL to tide you

joke about what the farmer said after he won the lottery: "I guess I'll
just keep farming until the money is gone."... you probably will have a
more immediate need for the money.
