[RBW] Tektro RX 2.0 cross/interrupter levers?

2015-11-05 Thread Conway Bennett
I bought Tektro RX 2.0 cross/interrupter levers for my partners bike off of
another list but I can't figure theses things out and setting
cross/interrupters is easy.

Basically it's the right/rear lever. It doesn't seem to accept a cable with a
5 mm ferrule where the cable comes from the aero lever, yet the left/front
does. Also the right/rear doesn't have reach adjustment but the left/front
does. Thoughts?

These seem to have been a Eurasian pruduct and I can only get info on the RL
720 which I own and use.

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-05 Thread Zed Martinez
Edwin. the beefier ones are M6, I actually weird was already used to that
because my previous frame did that too. (to others reading in, the two rack
mounts immediately forwards of the drops are M6, all the other braze-ons
are M5) So, my rack stays were already drilled out for the larger bolt and
it was pretty easy for my attempt. Luckily the Lowes out here finally
started carrying stainless metric hex cap bolts, so, while the price each
was highway robbery I upgraded from the black steel ones I'd been using
previously to some nice stainless for this. I didn't have any problems with
the head tube, my Technomic can sink pretty deep into it, so, no idea how
to help you there, but I wish you best of luck sorting it out! Looking
forward to seeing pics of more builds come out.

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-05 Thread alan lavine
Just some initial impressions: I got the stock build in green, a deep
British racing green. Its a thing of beauty, for sure, with attention to
detail typical of Rivendell. Its by far and away the longest, largest bike
I've ever owned, with the largest and tallest handlebars, and this may take
some getting used to. Also, the widest tires I've ever ridden...I weigh
170- what is a good tire pressure? Right now its at 25 rear and 20 front.
I have the mounting bracket for a Yepp Mini child carrier attached to the
stem and it prevents me from lowering the handlebars any further, so if I
can't get used to it like this I'll have to change to Albatross bars for
the lower rise. The rack mounts that are above the rear dropouts are indeed
M6 and I used these to mount a Tobeak rack for a rear child carrier.

All in all, its lovely and I'm very pleased. I think it was a great deal,
and I hope it was financially rewarding for Grant. It may take a while to
get used to such an upright position, but its primary use is grandchildren
fun rides and grocery getting, and city riding. Going to add decals:
"Grandpa express!"

Re: [RBW] My new project, The DirtDance Spinnaker Bag.

2015-11-05 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
No wobble at all, when all wrapped up tight. I was actually shocked how
tight the load (tent and pad) is secured. The secret is in the flex wings
and the two side straps (they attach to the mid rails of the rack) that
tighten the load, by pulling down on the wings after you roll down the top.
I haven't tried riding with a full bag of groceries in spinnaker mode yet.
I have a hunch, it will be very unstablelol. The spinnaker mode is
kind of a joke due to the bag being so big, but it actually has some merit
in holding the bag open while loading, and it should block some of the cold
from hitting my thighs, when it's in the twenties...

The Tires are from VEE rubber. VEE made Intense's super fast fat Micro
Knobby, which I loved. Intense dropped them, so I went looking at VEE's
tires for something similar. The tires are the MK3 model, 2.20". Love
them. Fast, light, soft, and enough traction for off road. The handlebars
are the Sycip singles bar, which are no longer on their site. They are
super wide, 26", and have a nice bend. So much nicer than drops, especially
loaded and when on single track.

The fork crown has no bolts. There are some threaded holes which could
accept bolts, to aid in the securing of a front rack, or other things one

[RBW] Choco Bar question

2015-11-05 Thread BSWP
The new bar is shown using an exposed bolt head at the top of the stem. Is
that by design, or perhaps just expediency in building up the sample bike?
The other Bullmoose models all have a very clean recessed Allen bolt, which
is preferable for many reasons. Aesthetics aside, the recessed bolt is less
likely to scrape you or snag on things.

But the Production Crown does have a center bolt hole that could be
used for fender mounting and maybe a 32F rack if the clearances of
the V brake straddle work out just right. I think the 32F is more
elegant than the Marks rack, and has fewer bolts to get loose.

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-05 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Just received my 59 Clementine last evening... I'm buried in other stuff,
but managed to quickly open the box and pull it out for a quick glimpse.
It's the orange (although not what I'd envisioned as "Clementine Orange",
based on the prototype photos. From that perspective I have to say I'm
disappointed I had the whole clementine theme in my head, and even
painted parts to come close to matching the original color. This color
will be difficult to match.

BUT, the Clem orange IS a beautiful shade of "orange" even if it's more a
kind of salmon orange, IMO. Once my brain processes this
*altogether-different-than-what-I-expected* orange, I'm sure I'll figure
out another use for the "orange parts" and proceed with my build... It
looks like it will be a total gas to ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: New fat 700 tires! 700x42 ultra light

2015-11-05 Thread Daniel Jackson
I've taken the EX version of this tire on the dirt and paved roads of
northern VT over the last month. About 50 miles on class 4 road, 200 miles
on maintained dirt/gravel, and 200 miles on pavement

I'm 175 lbs. Ive settled on front at 35 PSI and rear at 45 PSI.

Take following assessment with a grain of salt, as I switched out Marathon
Supremes when I put these on - so the difference is rather drastic. That
said, I have ridden EL Barlows on the same bike about a year ago, so
appreciate the supple tire revolution.

Overall, they do what a supple tire should do, and I imagine the SLs do so
as well as EL Barlows for a fraction of the price. Much of the road chatter
and noise typical of the Supremes is significantly dampened by these
beauties. I notice great grab while climbing through and cornering in the
loose stuff, i.e., performance subjectively akin to EL Barlows.

I went with the EX because of where I ride and hope for longer life. A
friend of mine has the SLs and I plan to swap out for comparison at some
point - but I fear its time to put the Ice Spiker Pros back on for the
coming snows.

If you've never tried a supple tire, these are a great entry. If you've
worn out your beautiful EL Compass tires, these would make a good cheaper
alternative. TIME WILL TELL whether or not they're durable.

They measure 40mm on my Velocity 700c Chukkar rims.

Rene had low trail/neutral forks made for her Atlantis and Hunkypillar. As
far as I know it was nothing but love for the experience. I've been curious
about this for my Saluki as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: Low Trail Hilsen?

2015-11-05 Thread Mike Schiller
I saw that after Bob built the new fork that it was lower trail.I've
seen and heard of Atlantis's, Hunqa, and Rams with replacement low trail
forks too.
The 700C model is a better option than the 650B model because of the
steeper fork rake IMO. But YMMV.

[RBW] Re: basket bags

2015-11-05 Thread Julian
John,

The fabric is pu coated -- I believe it is waterproof (it passed my tap
test, not used it in real rain yet), but the zipper and seams are not --
but neither are the ShopSack's. Like that bag, I'd call this highly water
resistant, but if you cannot afford for something to get wet (camera,
phone, etc) it would be wise to protect those things in plastic bag inside
the sack -- regardless if you use a Wald or a Riv bag.

The top dropout eyelets are M6 as well. I've been piecing mine together
slowly in my office, making a list of parts to bring the next day to add
during my lunch hour. M6 bolts are now on that list.
Also, I just mounted a Nitto R15 rack on the front, and wasn't too happy
with the result, probably because it looks exactly like I should have
expected - a rear rack mounted up front. I think I'll either be going for a
Haulin Colin rack or get a custom rack made to utilize the top mounts.

[RBW] Re: Low Trail Hilsen?

2015-11-05 Thread Patrick D Kelly
I don't really know anything about bike geometry, but I
used http://yojimg.net/bike/web_tools/trailcalc.php to do some calculations
of trail for some bikes. For comparison, I used a tire width of 45mm. These
are all 700c wheel bikes.

56 surly lht (700c): 70mm

19 marin muirwoods 29er: 66mm

54 hunqapillar: 64mm

56 sam hillborne: 62mm

55 joe appaloosa: 57mm

As I said, I really don't know what I'm doing here, but this still seems
interesting to me. I'm wondering if the joe appaloosa having lower trail
than the others is in anyway related to it having longer chainstays. Or is
this just a general move in the direction of lower trail? Another variable
here would be expected tire size. I've done all my calculations with the
same tire size, but clearly these bikes are designed with different size
tires in mind.

[RBW] Re: Low Trail Hilsen?

2015-11-05 Thread Lungimsam
Since the frame isn't made as a 650b bike though, wouldn't it never really
handle like a true 650b AHH bike, if there were to be such a thing?

I know the top tube is going to lose some tilt as the front end drops due
to the LT fork, as I think I read about this happening in the BQ mag once
when a friend of Jan's had his fork re-raked, to good effect though.
Not really sure, just curious about this. Or does it not matter whether any
given frame goes with a LT, MT, or HT fork?

The really nasty stuff that is really good is OneShot. It's nasty and it's
good because it is lead based. Art stores have it as "sign paint". I used

Steve Palincsar recollects Jan had a written opinion on 700c max tire size.
Coincidentally I was reading VBQ Vol 2 number 3 from winter 2004 and found
"Choosing Your Wheels: History, Comfort and Rolling Resistance." He makes
a case for a "golden mean" that's achieved with 700c x 25 and 650b x 38.
His escape comment in the conclusion is "Whether this is arbitrary or
really results in the most pleasant handling bike remains unknown."

I'd say in the intervening 10+ yrs he's softened his conclusion and
accomodates wider tires in his supple equation. For me commuting in the
dark to work and running errands around town over the years I've found 42mm
Schwalbes worked well for cracks, roots, branches etc. For me 42+mm of any
tire is preferred for the type of riding I do.

His article also mentioned the not as robust nature of supple tires which
painfully I've found true. I now have Stan's in my tubes and tire wipes
installed. I may add a rabitt's foot (or lucky charm) if all else fails.

My conclusion. Supple tires are comfortable and fun but can be painful with
flats or replacement cost.

[RBW] Re: Low Trail Hilsen?

2015-11-05 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I looked into this when I wrecked my Saluki fork... I discussed it with Rob at
OAC and Chris Bishop of Bishop Bikes... They both felt like the HT/ST angles
weren't ideal for a LT fork. Not sure if it was more of an excess of caution
or an understanding that it wasn't a good call. My frame is a 60cm 650b.

Anyway I went with a Riv/Waterford oem replacement... Which has been fine. The
bike handles as well as ever.

I'm still low trail curious but not upset i didn't experiment with the Saluki.

Christopher, I used a heat gun with gloves. Some closed cell foam helps too,
for some molding. I molded the hooks on the rack, took the plate off and heated
the hooks again, and then just barely tightened the hooks by hand, and hold
'till cool.  No rattle.

The Tires are from VEE rubber. VEE made Intense's super fast fat Micro Knobby,

something similar. The tires are the MK3 model, 2.20".  Love them. Fast, light,
soft, and enough traction for off road. The handlebars are the Sycip singles

I wear Adidas Superstars (the shell toe shoes) with a Specialized (the
brand as opposed to a synonym for 'custom') orthotic insert. I also have a
couple of thin plastic wedges in one shoe that were recommended when I had
a fitting done.

I like the rubber shell toes because I use half clips or half cages on my

that they've been available for the past 35 + years. They're not going to

[RBW] Re: basket bags

2015-11-05 Thread Julian
I just got one of the 1392 bags today. It's the larger of the two, and is a
bit smaller than the large Riv Shopsack.

It is made from a medium weight coated "cordura-type" nylon fabric -- I'd
wager it is as watertight as the Riv bags. Very nicely finished -- taped
and sewn seams inside, with taped edges at the top as well, so the zipper
interface is finished (which it is not on the Riv bags).

The bag has long carry straps that are sewn onto the front and rear of the
bag all the way down to the bottom seam, which should distribute the load
well, with little chance of strap tear out (although unless you're carrying
your lead collection, that's not likely to be an issue with the Riv bags
either!). The front straps have 2 ~10" reflective bands on the bag, there's
a loop on the front where you can clip a "see-me" blinkie, and there are
velcro loops front and back to attach to a basket.

The zipper is a large coil zipper -- very beefy. The zipper brand is AP --
I do not know them -- the Riv bags use venerable YKK coil zippers in a
smaller size.

I'm impressed with this bag. Well built, nicely finished. I'd rate this bag
as a real bargain at the price.

[RBW] FS, a few Rivvy items: Grip Kings, Dirt Drop, Soma Portola, Non-aero levers

2015-11-05 Thread Sofia Torres
I have a few Rivish things to sell

Two sets of Grip Kings, one silver, one black. The silver set I've ridden
for a while, so they are in nice used shape. The black ones I bought and
never installed, they look pretty much new. I have the thread-in spikes
that will fit either pedal. Let's say $40 shipped for the black pedals, $35
shipped for the silver. Add $5 if you want the spikes (only one baggie of
them available).

A 8cm Nitto Dirt Drop in good used shape, still pretty but some scuffing
below and around the minimum insert line. $45 shipped

Barely used (but a little tape residue) Soma Portola bars. 53cm version.
Didn't work for me, too wide. $50 shipped

ENE Gran Compe non-aero levers with brown hoods, good used shape. $25
shipped

I have pics of everything on my flickr but email if you need more, or if
you see something else you like on here, most of it is still available:

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-05 Thread Edwin W

Here you will see:

   1. The frame with wheels. See how high the stem is? That is as low as it
will go without a hammer, it seems.
   2. The clearance of the rear wheel. Need to work on the fender line!
That was the last thing I did last night, tired and a bit ornery.
   3. The tightness with the rack plate.

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-11-05 Thread Philip Kim
My guess is to bolt marks rack to the front. I think since these specced
with V brakes, the Nitto 32 mini front rack wasn't going to clear the
brakes to have a connection into the fork crown.

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-05 Thread David Banzer
The stem should go in more - I'd give Riv a call. Don't use a hammer!
I had some resistance with my seatpost going in, lotsa grease helped, but
there was a few rough spots on the inside of the seattube.
