Re: [RBW] Re: Redlands Strada Sterrata - Saturday 11/14

2015-11-15 Thread cyclotourist
That sand is rough going in the beginning. Even with good tires,
there's a technique to it. We thought about routing it in reverse, so
the sand is downhill at the end, but then everyone is tired by the
time they hit it. No easy way through it, just gotta' do it.

Glad you and Allen to come out for sure! Strada Rossa is around the
corner, and this is a bit of a warm-up for that (minus sand)!

My Waterford Road (Reynolds 753) is 1995. It has a level TT and standard HT. I
think the Road Standard followed in 1996 with a sloped TT and extended HT.

[RBW] Re: The "new" triple on my Cheviot -- does the big ring look worn out to you?

2015-11-15 Thread Ryan Ray
It's my favorite shop! But every small shop will have its ups and downs as
they break in and lose mechanics. I live and work in the neighborhood and
have done so for 6 years and will probably never leave. So even though I
have friends at other shops I will count it as my LBS forever.

Those fenders are plain are stupid though. I don't blame the shop I blame
Soma who were unlike the shop, were definitely jerks about it when I whined
to them over email. Worth it to figure out the super strange pre-drilled
front rack hole but if you are going to do something very strange like that
at least mention it in some sort of instructions or something.

Oh well, as another shop owner in the neighborhood always says "the
standard is that there is no standard".

As for the chainring it doesn't look worn to be (not an expert). Just have
fun riding right now as the sun has finally broken out! I'm inside with a
sleeping toddler :|

[RBW] Re: The "new" triple on my Cheviot -- does the big ring look worn out to you?

2015-11-15 Thread Garth

It's normal Lynne . The Sugion OEM rings as Ryan summised do have
various shift "aids" that could be called "shavings" by some ! Yes, they
may look a bit worn or even like a sharks fin from a glance. Their OEM
rings are not like the standard(not high end Sugino, those and these are
different) whose teeth are all uniform and "full" size.

I have multiple Sugino cranks with these rings and they all look like
that. I first wondered why the teeth seemed to wear so quickly ! Then I
realized it was the shaping of the teeth and not fast wear .

The shop realy has nothing to replace then , but they may put on a
standard ring if they are not aware that all OEM Sugino's appear a bit
"used" when they are not. You can easily tell the diffenence between
actual worn and used teeth and a brand new ring with the shift aids, that
is if you look before you ride on them !

[RBW] Re: Guess which one is mine...

2015-11-15 Thread KC
Easy. Yours is the beautiful bike. My husband and I are usually passed by
racers, head down, as we also meander along enjoying the scenery.
Sometimes he speeds up to show them he can keep up (probably really can't
for too long, though, but who cares). The only time I see bikes like mine
are when I'm with my family. But.
when I rolled my bike into a bike shop in Oceanside to buy a part, the guy
who helped me was thrilled to see his first Rivendell and spent a half hour
talking bikes and bringing his bike out to show us, and
when I watched over my bike waiting for lunch in the seaport village area
of San Diego someone walked up and asked if he could take a picture of my
bike cuz he rarely sees Rivendells where he lives

We have a relative planning to buy a bike. Pretty sure leaning towards a
(used) carbon road bike. I think that would be consistent with what he
sees around him (besides the beach cruisers). We asked him how he likes to
ride and every answer he gave said he should have something riv-like. He
is a very value-oriented, long-term-thinking, careful purchaser (buys good
high-end cars, used). I made him borrow my copy of Just Ride and hope it
helps him make a decision that works for him.

The Bleriot was initially conceived as a travel bike. I assume this explains
the airplane theme and name. This is way back in about 2001-2002 I am guessing.
It was one or two lines in the reader.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-11-15 Thread Patrick Kelly
I made it to riv HQ yesterday, and I did see the prototype. It's a 52.

I was there to double check my size. I got a new PBH measurement of 86
instead of 87. I suspect I rounded up last time. I stood over a size
58 hillborne, and while it's theoretically possible for me, I'm
convinced it's too big for me. My original order of a 55 was correct.

The most entertaining part of the day was chatting with Grant about
the prototype. Apparently he was thinking it was a size 55 because
somebody else (don't remember who) that would normally ride a size 55
(same as Grant) had been riding it around a lot. Grant had been
puzzled because he felt that when he rode it, it was too small. After
measuring it and checking the actual size (to answer my "that's a size
52, right?" question), it all came clear to him that it was in fact
too small for him, because it's actually a size 52, and not a 55.

I rode an atlantis, the 1x9 hunqapillar, a clem and a large cheviot
(the medium was over at BBH). I spent most of my ride time on the 55
sam hillborne with albatross bars. I'm not one to notice subtleties of
bicycle behavior, so I cannot really say anything about any of them vs
the others. They all ride like bikes to me. :) I can confirm that I
still don't like drop bars (mostly because of the brakes) and that I
was less excited about the bullmoose bar than I thought I would be.
Riding with the albatross bars, I'm thinking that I may actually be
very happy with the new bar on the joe appaloosa. If not, I'll
probably figure out how to put my jones h-bar on it, instead.

I was hoping to get more/better photos of the new bar, but Grant took
it out for a long ride. The shape of the new bar is a bit more
complicated than is obvious in the photos posted so far, and yes, it
has a slight drop. It looks really good to me. I was hoping to take it
for a short ride, even though it's the wrong size, just to check out
the bars, but that didn't happen.

[RBW] Re: FS 54 Hunqapillar

2015-11-15 Thread KC
I agree with them. Babies don't have to cost that much. They use
everything for such a short time that it is usually easy to get the
essential barely used for next to nothing or passed around among friends.
And once you see how happy they are with cardboard boxes and kitchen
utensils, you see you don't have to buy a lot of toys either. Your bike,
on the other hand, is a 30-year bike and that cost very little when
amortized. Best to just make sure your wife also has a nice bike so you
can look forward to family outings before you know it. And since you will
need to keep your sanity as you enjoy every stage they go through, a bike
can be a very handy outlet.

My congratulations too. Your life will never be the same and in only in
the best way.

[RBW] FS: Swift Industries Rando bags and roll-top panniers

2015-11-15 Thread johnb
I am selling some truly lovely panniers that have a matching small Rando
bag. They are waxed canvas which Swift is no longer using. They are tan
canvas with maroon. The panniers were part of one of their early Christmas
specials with high wheeler image on the flap. The Rando bag has a
velo-orange attachment to the stem. It comes with the attachment.

Roll-top Panniers - http://builtbyswift.com/shop/roll-top-panniers/
Ozette handlebar bag - http://builtbyswift.com/shop/ozette-randonneur-bag/

The second Ozette bag is Navy with Royal Blue trim, yellow sides and front
pocket and orange rear-facing pockets. This one has a Berthoud handlebar
attachment

https://flic.kr/s/aHskocWKcT

I would like to sell the panniers and waxed canvas bag as a set. I am
asking $200 for the set plus shipping. They are truly practical collector's
items.

The Navy handlebar bag is $125 plus shipping.

[RBW] Suggestions for dyno tail light wiring path on my Bleriot needed, please.

2015-11-15 Thread Lungimsam
Suggestions for tail light wiring path on my Bleriot needed, please.

I have a hanging Edeluxe II on my front rack and figured that if I'm gonna use
a fender light it might as well be powered from the headlight. I mean the hole
for the tail light power hook up is just sitting there on the headlight unused.
So better to power it by dyno than battery.

So any suggestions for safe wiring path? Just want to avoid the Schmidt wire
ever getting caught up in wheels by accident.

Thanks for any suggestions.

[RBW] FS: Betty Foy 51CM frameset

2015-11-15 Thread moshmosh

For sale, 51cm Betty Foy frameset. Includes headset, bottom bracket, and
seat post. In great condition, frame was built up and ridden less than 50
miles.

Selling to fund a 26” rig for my wife. She prefers the smaller wheel size
over the 650B on the Betty.

Asking $925/shipped.

[RBW] FS: 62cm Rivendell Saluki (butterscotch)

2015-11-15 Thread Rob
Argh, I hate to do this, but...circumstances.

https://flic.kr/s/aHskoeejxJ

Frame: 62cm Rivendell Saluki (butterscotch)
Wheels: Hand built by G Cycles.
Rims: 650B 32H front, 36H rear Compass Cycles Gran Bois
Spokes: DT
Hubs: SON20 delux generator front, White Industries Mi5 rear with new
bearings.
Skewers: Pitlocks with matching keys.
Tires: Compass Cycle Babyshoe Pass 42mm
Fenders: Gilles Berthoud Composite
Bottom Bracket: Phil
Crankset: TA Cyclotourist ProVis 5
Chainrings: TA 26-36-46
Pedals: MKS Grip Kings
Cassette: Rivendell IRC 8-spd 12-34
Chain: Connectix Stainless Steel
FD: Campagnolo Super Record
RD: XTR Rapid Rise
Brifters: Campagnolo Daytona 10-spd
Brakes: Paul Centerpulls (polished)
Brake pads: Koolstop
Handlebar: Compass Cycle 41cm Randonneur
Stem: Nitto Dirt Drop
Bell: Brass
Seatpost: Nitto S83
Seat: Berthoud Aspin (natural)
Seatbag: Berthoud 786 (grey) with Klickfix attachment.
Front Rack: Mark's Rack
Basket: Wald Medium
Front Light: SON Edelux I LED
Rear Light: Philips Saferide LED
Rear Rack: Nitto Big Rack (old style)
Kickstand: ClickStand.

This Saluki, #0159, was originally built up when new by Jeff Ferguson, and
then owned by Ron Blumenthal for a year. I bought it from Ron in 2010. I
have ridden it pretty much daily since then.

Substantial renovation August 2015 included rebuilt wheels (new rims and
spokes, renewing bearings on rear hub); new 36T chainring; new stainless
chain; new cassette; new RD pulleys; new brake pads; and Phil factory
rebuild of the bottom bracket. The bike has, for all intents and purposes,
been re-newed.

Still, there are a few caveats: There is one dent on the frame--on the
downtube acquired in shipping from the East Coast when I bought the bike in
2010. The cotton diamond wrap on the bars is due for replacement. The
Ergopower brifters will need a rebuild in another year.

This is a dream bike set up with what I think (and many agree) are the best
performing, best looking and most durable components available.

I'm asking $3,295, plus shipping from Seattle, for the bike as shown in the
photos.

[RBW] FS/FT: Tubus Tara Lowrider Front Rack

2015-11-15 Thread Tim Wood
Hey everyone,

I have a Tubus Tara, black, that I no longer need and wondering if there is any
interest in the group. It's in good shape with only minor scuffing where the
panniers attach. It's seen minimal use, maybe a total of 4 weeks of touring.
$75 USD shipped to lower 48 and Canada.

I would also entertain a trade for either a Nitto mini front rack, a silver
surly front rack, or a Nitto big front rack (34f) and cash. Let me know if you
are interested and I can send some photos.

[RBW] Re: Tektro Brake RL720 Interrupter Levers on Bosco Bars?

2015-11-15 Thread Marc Irwin
I thought mine came with shims, at least that's what I used on my
Hillborne. I mounted them onto the Bullmoose Bosco's on my Hunq without
shims or tape or anything beneath. The are firm, but I can easily move
them around as I need in the case that I am carrying something in the front
basket when travelling.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell models and year they were introduced?

2015-11-15 Thread James Warren

Very nice!

So 2004 was a "year that changed everything." That year brought:

- Full commitment to 650B by making frames for it
- The country bike (splitting difference between Atantis-tourer and "Road")
- Bikes made for centerpulls or extra-long clearance sidepulls (even though the
Tektros and Silvers were still a couple years away)
- Commitment to good step-through frames

The company that was already synonymous with the term All-Rounder took that
spirit a couple steps further in 2004. Closely related to that, Fun was on the
grow too. Quickbeam!

[RBW] Re: Guess which one is mine...

2015-11-15 Thread dstein
What is MAMIL?

I feel like most of those bikes in that picture are aluminum hybrid bikes
which is the bulk of what I see on BART and the ferry. I assume most people
just walk into a bike store and get whatever they can for $500-$1000 (after
they realize they can't get a bike for $200, like I did 15 years ago when I
first started riding and getting into bikes. But even with the crabon
crowd, it is all pretty generic black.

I love going up Tunnel road (my main climbing route) and getting comments
like that on my bike though. Last week I got a 'good job' that was said in
a way that the guy couldn't believe I was on such an old, vintage bike with
bags and made it to the top.

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-11-15 Thread ted
Sorry for the slow response, but I was out riding most of the day Sat. and
recovering the rest of it. I did make it up to RBW WHQ friday, but I didn't
ride the Joe so not much to report. It looked very nice and quite Sam H
like to me, except for the canti-post brakes. Of course it doesn't have the
new fork crown, and I think the stays on the production frames will be
longer so... The bars seem very cool. They bend foreword a bit before
sweeping back which I had not picked up from the pictures.
I hope you were able to go yourself on Sat.

Looking over the Joe Appaloosa on the Blug and it looks like a great
bike. The pre-order price is a great deal. Anyone pull the trigger and
order one? I am guessing they won't last long- only 4 55cms left!!!

I missed the Clem but am thinking seriously about this one.

 Cheers!
 Chris

[RBW] LARCC

2015-11-15 Thread hsmitham
Hey Rivsters,

Here's a new video that Russ & Laura of The
Path Less Pedaled just posted. Gives some perspective on another aspect of
the LA bike scene.

LA River Camp Coffee.

Enjoy.

[RBW] Re: FS 54 Hunqapillar

2015-11-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
If it helps the budget at all, we've ended giving all the baby
accoutrements like crib, changing table, highchair etc, to Goodwill as we
found life much easier without them. We also find co-sleeping and nursing a
great combination for getting sleep.

Perhaps there's less need to sell your Hunqapillar if you don't need the
stuff they say you do? (I know, good luck convincing the new mom!) Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
