[RBW] FS: Canvas Bags.

2016-01-08 Thread David Banzer
I started making up a batch of standard bags during November/December in
olive green, mostly to take photographs of these standard models that I
hope to keep an inventory of. I'm deciding to go with a canvas fabric
that's a slightly different shade of green, so I need to make up those
instead to use for photographing, so have a few bags in olive green that I
made up out of Fairfield Textiles #8 heavy-martexin water-repellent canvas.
I made these with veg tan leather and with Sunbrella trim, which is a very
durable trim typically used in boat covers, so really great for outdoor
use. It sews up nice and looks really clean to me.
Also have a couple other random bags that I have floating around.
All are listed in my webstore: treetop.bigcartel.com
Follow the links to see each bag.
Payment can be made with a debit/credit card or with Paypal.
There is a flat $6 shipping rate per order, and I use USPS Priority mail
for shipping. Other bike-related items are in my webstore as well.
Local pickup in Chicago, roughly near Lincoln Sqaure, works as well. Just
kindly go through the order process first - use code LOCAL during checkout
to take off the shipping charge.
Contact off-list if you can if you have any questions.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: I Bailed Off Flicker

2016-01-08 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Indeed - I keep my Flickr subscription partially out of habit. But, even
with all the "improvements" it still does a fine job. Yahoo ownership a
minus. All the folks who I've been there with for the past (mumble-mumble)
years a significant plus. Flickr has become the old bike shop on the back
street where the good stuff is, while Instagram is on the main square and
all the cool kids hang out there. I like both, but they are different.

There have been some changes to google photos, with hints of automatic
uploading and such (all of which using the Google+ tools, it sounds like).
Since so much of my photo-taking is via the phone, it does seem to be an
option.

Playing with IFTTT for some clients, and we got photos moving and sharing
well between dropbox folders and flickr, instagram and others. That's a
helpful tool, if only for giving you a backup archive for images.

I've also seen some tools for migrating from Flickr, most of which seem
pretty manual. But the functionality is there within Flickr to archive all
of your images locally - and then you can repost elsewhere.

Dear Mark,

Another option:

LPS 3 is commonly used in
marine environments. It is available in Canada, at your local marina or
possibly at your local hardware store. I got a spray can (close to a
lifetime supply for me) at Ace Hardware. It feels pretty similar to the
cosmoline+ carrier Framesaver.

for me (54cm), but it had a magical ride, almost like there was a little
electric motor hidden somewhere in those 531 tubes. And the blue-ish green
color is amazing in the sun. Buy it now, operators are standing by!

Thanks for the input, all. Very helpful. Thinking of pulling the trigger on a
SM frameset and building one up. Or there seem to be a couple of 51cm completes
on eBay right now. All reviews so far have been positive. Hoping I can
replicate the feel of my Jones bars with some albatross/stache with a dirt drop
stem. Still want discs but sounds like side/centerpull will be good enough for
its use. Maybe someday Grant will drink the disc kool aid. That new segmented
Appaloosa fork would look great designed for discs.

My only thought on discs, is that stock/mass-produced bikes with discs
have VERY stiff forks. I've ridden my Salsa La Cruz back to back with
my Riv custom, same 40mm MSO tires, and WOW, what a difference in
compliance between the two. The La Cruz is like riding a jack hammer.
Riv is totally plush. YMMV of course, and discs are great IMHO, but
generic disc forks you would find on any non-custom are really
uncomfortable.

[RBW] FS: More stuff, road levers, Silver one-at-a-time bar-end

2016-01-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Trying to clear out extraneous bits I'm not using.

Cane Creek for v-brakes, same RL520 model number as the Tektros I just
sold, but priced higher new so there must be more aluminum in there
somewhere. Silver, some scratches, nice hoods, good for the bike you lean
against walls without a care, $15 shipped.

Single left-side Silver shifter, single Shimano pod with a couple minor
scratches. Works well as a rear-right shifter with Grant's preferred
'swapped sides' mounting for Silver bar-ends. If you're a one-at-a-time
hipster, shift the rear with a Silver! $30 shipped.

If you determine that the clicks are forcing you to put the shifter in a
bad intermediate position, I will point out that I've confirmed that a
Silver Downtube shifter will work on the Sun Race thumbie base. That means
you could experiment with a "real" friction shifter on that base to see if
you get better results.

[RBW] Re: FS: HERON Touring 55cm complete build

2016-01-08 Thread William deRosset
Hi, all,

A side note, and unfortunately a fair amount of thread drift, but after a
decade of tinkering around with my bike fit and a pile of different bikes,
I had my René Herse built back in 2008/9. Mike Kone started with a blank
sheet of paper, and he and I worked from various directions (historical;
personal history and experience; uses for the bike; aesthetics) to find the
very best solution for me (and this work eventually influenced some of his
commercial machines, though those are very much his bikes). Its fit
parameters turned out identical to... the 56 Heron Road (the front end is a
little different to accommodate a dedicated front loading geometry) or the
55 Heron Touring... I have a 55 Heron Touring (on permanent loan to my
brother), and it fit beautifully with a long-ish stem. These really are
undersung, special machines, and they get a lot just right.

If I hadn't gotten bit fairly hard by the rando-bug and found integrated
bikes particularly convivial for that purpose, I'd probably have hunted
down a Heron Road (in Silver, so that I could differentiate between my
machines), and called off the search for marginal improvements. I ended up
with a few machines that fit my use-cases better than the Herons did (and I
turn out to really love a lighter tube spec than they offer), but that
doesn't take away their versatility, durability, and excellent low-key road
manners. They're great bikes, and only one of my machines wins out over
these "blue collar" machines aesthetically.

Best Regards,

Will

I still have my '82 Stump Jumper. The chain stays are pretty long a 18.5
inches, which allows it to pass the fist between the seat tube and tire
test. The top tube is really long too at 23.75 inches. I currently have it
set up as a Raleigh Sports inspired city bike, black powdered coat paint,
full fenders with a reflector and Albatross bars. Still a great riding bike
after all these years.

Re: [RBW] Re: San Marcos or Straggler 650B?

2016-01-08 Thread Tim Gavin
My girlfriends SM is a 51 cm 1st generation (pearly blue).

AFAIK, besides the color change (to tiburon blue), the only other changes
from 1st to 2nd generation San Marcos are to the fork: new fork legs with a
more "classic" curve, and mid-fork eyelets, a la Riv.

I don't believe there were any other changes to geometry or clearance
between the generations.

The 650b and 700c San Marcos frames each have different tire clearances.
The 650b fits a wider tire (stated clearance 38 mm) than the 700c (stated
clearance 35 mm).

In fact, the 650b still has pretty generous room with 650 x 38 tires,
enough for 38 + fenders or for a 650 x 42 tire (Hetres at least, which
don't have the extra thick tread of the Fatty Rumpkin).

Cheers,
Tim

I don't think there were tire clearance changes persay, but the fork was
definitely changed. I believe the first version's fork brake offset was
really weird, which could account for the Fatty Rumps being too tall.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-08 Thread Mark Reimer
Ah, I'm familiar with that product. And on that note, can't believe I
forgot about this, I JUST rust treated a 40 year old motorcycle tank. It
was nsty rusty inside. Guess what ate the rust clean off, is dirt
cheap, can be dumped onto the street after, and available everywhere?

White vinegar!

I filled the tank (which was completely lined with rust) with vinegar, and
added a few small sheet metal screws to knock the rust loose when I'd shake
it. I let it sit for about a week, shaking it a few times a day. A week
might have been way more than needed. but the point is, it came out 100%
clean. I then treated it with an epoxy tank liner product to prevent rust
from returning, which I wouldn't ever do on a bike frame, but the vinegar
would certainly be a good rust treatment for inside a rusty bicycle frame.

[RBW] Re: Show me your Garage/Workshop/Cave/Storage Spaces

2016-01-08 Thread Montclair BobbyB
For years all I wanted was a garage with an automatic door opener, that I
can to pull into, press a button and be inside my house...Well... after I
had that for a few years and the novelty had worn off, all I wanted was a
heated space where I could work on bikes, cars, or anything else, and with
enough room!.. I finally have that, and it's only 2 small steps away from
my kitchen. Hey, cars are tough... they can survive outside or under a
carport... My cars are not show-worthy... they look just fine with a little
beausage. And mowers? rakes? wheelbarrows?... they belong in sheds... NO,
people... the attached garage is the ultimate man-cave... You can roll big
equipment in and out, track dirt in, hose it off, and yes, even have heat
in it (mine has an old wood-stove)... Mine also has 2 huge picture windows,
a built-in bowling-alley-turned counter running the width of the garage,
great lighting (a chandelier hung by a hook big enough to hold an engine...
the guy who built this place was a skilled craftsman).

ManCave One is now operational... Needs some additional tweaking, but I now
have piped in stereo music and I'm just about ready to start living out
here.

Peace,
BB

[RBW] Re: Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-08 Thread drew
amsoil hdmp is, from what i can tell, the exact same thing as jpw frame
saver. it's awesome. boeshield feels watery and runny, but
amsoil/framesaver sticks and runs the right amount to make you confident
that its on, and staying on, all surfaces.

if you are worried about rust that you already have, i had great luck
refurbishing a rust bucket frame with THIS

 product.
i stripped the frame, plugged all holes, filled the frame with the liquid
for about a day, dumped it out and with it came the rust. then just applied
amsoil.

[RBW] Rust-proofing your frames

2016-01-08 Thread Mark Reimer
Today I rode to work in the sloppiest snowy junk in a while. Despite being
-18C, it was still slush due to all the de-icer on the streets. It sticks
to my frame like glue and makes me worried about it rusting to pieces.
Particularly as I was in my LBS yesterday looking at an IRO steel frame
that had two big long holes on the inside of each chain stay after ten
years of riding. My Atlantis is 10 years old this year.. I hope to keep it
MUCH longer.

What do you guys use for internal rust inhibitors? I can't get JPW
Framesaver here without paying up the arse for shipping. Thinking about
linseed oil, though I've heard it's a real mess. Any tips? Fluid Film rust
inhibitor spray is available locally and is a mix of wax and oil. Also have
heard Amsoil HDMP is good, but seems tricky to find here as well.

(Also I know fenders would help. But they aren't an option at the moment,
just looking for rust prevention)

It seems my best bet at this point - non-corrosive and non-toxic is a plus
too. I'll have to strip the bike down over the weekend and give it the
goods. Nice excuse to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon wrenching on the bike.
I can finally get around to replacing my pitted headset too!
