The shop is Rainbow Paint and Blasting in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The bike shop I work part-time for (Northtowne Bikes in Cedar Rapids)
recommends them for all customer powder requests. Some folks will order a
Surly and have it powder-coated a custom color before assembly.

2016-01-15 Thread David Banzer
Hi Drew,
The tread pattern is just little dots, so there's not much to wear out. And
the tread isn't very thick. That's the tradeoff I suppose for fast and
comfortable. I don't expect the tread to wear as long as a Super Moto
tread. Obviously no flat protection on these, I'll be swapping in
superlight tubes and Stan's sealant - I think the superlight tubes with
sealant will be about the same weight or a little less than the regular
tubes that I'm using now. The lower pressure needed for these tires means
that they'll be less likely to pick up debris, but we'll see.
The snow/ice in Chicago has melted a bit, but with colder temps expected,
I'll most likely swap in Smart Sams, so a durability test will have to wait
until I get the chance to ride these on a regular basis.

On a long descent using the rear brake lets the rear wheel share some of
the heat load. A good thing on any bike, even more vital on a tandem or

Redundant brakes are good thing, too.

May not be worth the effort depending on how far the store is where you

[RBW] Re: Back to the Drawing Board for Kid Bike

2016-01-15 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Thanks, Leah & Patrick.

I think he'll ride it for 2 - 3 years. That seems to-be the sizing strategy
for Islabikes. Since we went a little big, maybe an extra half year or so
more. But we can't know when a growth spurt can change all those fine plans.

One reason I talked myself into it was that our daughter is 2 years
younger. We can hand it down and get another 2 or so years. (So 4 - 5 years
total for the bike.)

She's very nearly riding the small Cnoc 14 on which my son learned to ride.
(She can't quite reach the ground flat footed, and that's not very
confidence inspiring to her.)

Enjoy! And watch him lead your family up that hill. (Islabikes brakes are
terrific-- warn him before he uses it the first time, particularly on that
downhill!)

[RBW] Re: What is the *real* purpose of a rear brake?

2016-01-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
Devout Socratic that you are, let's answer Patrick Moore's questions with
questions:

Most fixed riders I know have a rear brake. That mechanism that allows the
rider to slow down through the rear wheel is the fixed drivetrain. In
other words, you always had a rear brake. Did you ever use it? If yes,
you have removed your rear brake. Do you feel you've downgraded the
braking ability of your bike? Do you want to make up the difference? If
yes, put on a rear brake. If no, leave it off.

The reason I would never remove my rear brake is that sometimes I brake
while cornering. I've learned about the circle of traction, and know that
the combination of braking and turning forces can cause a skid. Rear wheel
skids are scary but recoverable. Front skids almost always result in sever
DOG Syndrome (Down On Ground). If I knew for a fact that I would never be
simultaneously braking and cornering, OR if I knew that I had absurdly high
front traction that could never be overcome, then I would indeed toss my
rear brake for the simplicity and purity of it all.

[RBW] Kudos to RBW!

I ordered an item during the year-end 25% off web specials sale. Noticed a
few days after ordering that there was a note that the item was backordered
and would be a few days. No problem, called earlier this week just to check
and spoke with Dave. He said that they ran out of the item, so they ordered
another for me, at the closeout price that I paid. I don't have immediate
plans for the item, so I would've been perfectly fine with a response of
"we're sorry, but we ran out" and had payment refunded. Not only did they
order another for me, but sent it out UPS next-day. With the speed of the

So, a hearty kudos to RBW and the customer service they provide!

Re: [RBW] What is the *real* purpose of a rear brake?

2016-01-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I've seen that. I know that, on a fixed gear with just the front brake,
when I really stop suddenly, the rear wheel skids just because I've
simultaneously stopped pedaling, even without any real backforce -- so
little is the weight on the rear tire.

So, I know that, for effective panic stops, I don't need a rear brake. And
I have no plans to pull a trailer with this bike; nor are the brakes disks.

But am I really putting my life in my hands if I run a freewheel with no
rear brake? -- assuming I ensure that my cable and other parts are kept in

Would you let your wife/husband/child do this? (I wouldn't let my child do

I'll probably just leave it on, but I *am* curious.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the *real* purpose of a rear brake?

2016-01-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Well explained, O Socrates! -- the main point being that there are types of
riding on a freewheel bike, and not encountered on a fixed bike, that
require, or at least benefit from, a rear brake, and that mere stopping
distance is not the only factor to consider.

You know, It's been so long since I did long, fast downhills on a bike that
I've forgotten many skills and equipment requirements for these skills.

I've largely concluded that *if* (1) you don't do fast downhills with
corners, and (2) you keep your equipment (notably the cable and its
attachment) in top form, and (3) you are not towing a trailer, and (4) you
are using calipers and not cantis or disks, then you'd be fine with just a
front and a freewheel. Of course, I am so timid on fast downhills that I
could *probably* get away with this, but there is always that very
unexpected decreasing radius or reverse cambered corner that may relegate
all this theoretical justification to the trash can.

Which pedals? He mocked two different ones. He said MKS Sneaker pedals
suck. He said Powergrips on pedals suck. He said toe clips suck, and he
said Shimano 600 pedals with toe clips are the worst pedals ever to ride
without cleated shoes. Which ones are you agreeing with?

I'll submit that I would prefer to use Shimano 600s without cleated shoes
over these pedals without cleated shoes: SPDs suck with non-cycling shoes

Being a bad pedal with Vans doesn't make it a universally bad pedal.

The guy says at the beginning that his entire post spews hatred. If
anybody prefaces a commentary with "I'm about to spew a bunch of hatred",
then I know not to take any of it seriously. The opposite is probably
closer to the truth, when so-prefaced.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the *real* purpose of a rear brake?

2016-01-15 Thread Justin August
I prefer the feel of modulating my speed with both front and rear brakes.
Perhaps it comes from growing up throwing myself down hills and dirt roads
in the woods of West Virginia on various BMX and Mountain bikes getting
serious skids and having an extreme fear of going over the bars. As such I
find the rear brake to be a nice way to easily modulate speed without risk
of endo as opposed to a method of final stoppage.

Re: [RBW] What is the *real* purpose of a rear brake?

2016-01-15 Thread Christopher Murray
I think Bill has it right. You actually did have a rear brake previously, it
was just part of the drivetrain. I have always felt that the rear brake helps
balance out the stopping power. I am pretty sure that I would eventually fall
if I didn't have two brakes. The rear brake seems to keep the bike under
control as the front brake handles most of the actual braking. I would
definitely not let my wife/ daughter/ son ride with a front only set up.

Go find a few different scenarios and try riding into them at the same speed
braking with just the front, just the rear, and both. I'd be interested in what
you'd discover.

Cheers!
Chris

[RBW] Someone order a Reader for me

2016-01-15 Thread iamkeith
Wouldn't you know it? I placed a big order just a day before the
announcement that the new Reader was available, but only if purchased with
a legitimate order. I don't need anything else at the moment. If someone
is placing an order soon, and plans to get the reader, would you mind
getting two of them and forwarding one to me? Will reimburse costs, of
course. And owe you a favor...

Will it fit on a seat tube or a 40 mm fender?

At least, one will go on my car.

[RBW] FS: Sam Hillborne 58cm $1250 shipped

2016-01-15 Thread Elton Pope-Lance
Listees,

This is a new, never built, green 2TT frameset.
BB and headset installed by Riv.
Seat post included.

Recent financial speed bumps mean this project isn’t going to happen.
$1250 shipped lower 48. PayPal plus fees (or Friends & Family), check held for
clearance, etc.

Thanks for listening and passing it on.

- Elton

[RBW] Re: San Marcos or Straggler 650B?

2016-01-15 Thread Evan Baird
I've heard rumblings that the San Marcos may not be long for this world. I
had hoped that increasing the tire clearance would give it a bump, but
apparently they're talking about killing it off unless sales suddenly
increase. I guess it's ultimately up to Riv, since it's technically their
project, but it doesn't seem like that's the kind of thing they're very
interested in these days.

[RBW] What is the *real* purpose of a rear brake?

2016-01-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Theoretically - I think this matters more on motorcycles with suspension -
feathering the rear brake helps keep the rear end settled and straight while
applying the front. I always set my rear pads up further from the rim than the
front so I can get the appropriate balance with the same pressure on both
levers. A rear brake is also helpful on wet streets where you're trying to slow
the bike without breaking the front end loose. In my opinion you don't
absolutely *need* a rear brake on a freewheel bike, but it's a good idea.
