[RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

2016-01-24 Thread BSWP
I must have arrived at RBW just after you. I took a 62 Hunq out for a spin,
it's quite different from my '98 LongLow, very stable and slow to tip. But
I want to try a 62 Joe, too, when they're here for test rides. Those
Choco-staches look like they would take a set of interrupter levers just
fine.

[RBW] How much can Betty handle?

2016-01-24 Thread Mobile Bill
Much to my surprise, my Betty Foy is becoming my most used bike on my
commutings and travels about town. Love the Saluki and my 1988 Trek like
the first day I got on em, and the Betty Foy sort of became mine by
default. But boy, the Betty Foy is convenient for so many reasons that I
didn't expect it to be. Maybe it's how easy it is to hop in and around the
the mixte frame, maybe it's the Bosco bars I was smart enough to add, maybe
it's the simple but effective front double, or the springy B67 saddle, or
the fact that I can climb on it without the least regard for what I'm
wearing or whether the pants legs will get grease on em, or the fact that
it's got capacious baskets all over it. But when I need to get on a bike
and get going and move stuff around, two thirds of the time I hop on the
Betty.
Now here's the thing. I do much of my shopping on it. And today, I had
the choice of loading up a 36 pound bag of dogfood -- along with beer and
food -- or an 18 pound bag. Add 180 pounds or so of previously digested
groceries, add this and that, and suddenly poor Betty is carting around 230
or more pounds. I pondered what the impact of carrying that much weight
would be on a mixte frame, particuarly over a dozen miles of cracked
pavement, and without any data, chickened out and loaded up the 18 pound
bag. I've loaded it up big before, and the bike felt a little wobbly, but
really no more so than the Saluki when heavily loaded.
Did I unfairly prejudge the mixte frame? Has anyone ever ridden any
Rivendell frames to excess?

[RBW] Re: After RAGBRAI 2016 - Muscatine to Milwaukee WI

2016-01-24 Thread dougP
Bob:

I suggest you contact the Wisconsin Bike Federation to get their maps of
the area you'll be traveling thru:

https://store.wisconsinbikefed.org/shop/bicycle-maps-set-of-four/

A few years ago some us rode SAGBRAW, up around Door County, then back to
the Twin Cities, using these maps. They are absolutely first rate. The
network of county roads is used and routes are selected for ease of riding
& avoidance of traffic. Interstates are show in half tones for orientation
purposes. The various rail-trails are shown. It's pretty much everything
a touring cyclist would want, and I've used a lot of different types of
maps. They're printed on waterproof stock and quite rugged.

Not doing RAGBRAI but wish you the best.

[RBW] Re: How much can Betty handle?

2016-01-24 Thread Deacon Patrick
Bill,

(Someone check me if I'm wrong): The challenge with mixte is they are
weakest with torque. This doesn't mean weak, but I could imagine that a
high, rear load would tend to easily magnify the torque (my Hunq begins to
feel this around 40 pounts on top of the rear rack -- on roads, on trails
roughly 20) The challenge with a 36# bag of dog food is loading it. It has
to go up top, in back. and it's a wide semi-loose load. I'd say try it at
home and see. You'll know quick. Perhaps the solution is:

-- beer/food on top (if roughly 15-20 lbs)
-- (2) 18# bags on either side of the rear rack.
(This would likely be a max load. I've done 60-70 pounds on the Hunqapillar
(on roads, not trails) and it's slower going.) Be sure to take corners slow
and allow extra space for stopping and all that safety stuff.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] After RAGBRAI 2016 - Muscatine to Milwaukee WI

2016-01-24 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Aloha all!

Now that that RAGBRAI 2016 route has been announced (
http://ragbrai.com/2016-overnight-town-map/) I've got the rest of my summer
ride plans to consider.

I'll be attending my 40th (ouch) high school reunion this summer and I
convinced the committee to hold it the weekend after RAGBRAI by telling
them I'd ride from the end of that ride to Shorewood. It's really only
about 260-300 (short to long depending) and I've got a week to do it so I'm
not really concerned, but...

I thought I'd ask if anyone has any experience between Muscatine, IA (on
the Mississippi) and Milwaukee? Shorewood is across the street, literally,
from Milwaukee.

Also if anyone here lives along the route and wants to come for a day, let
me know. It's a ways off yet.

Here's a very, very tentative route (I haven't really researched the actual
roads, this is just Google)...

Monday Muscatine Clinton 71.9
Tuesday Clinton Freeport 57
Wednesday Freeport Janesville 56.6
Thursday Janesville Fort Atkinson 39.5
Friday Fort Atkinson Shorewood 63.5
Total 288.5
Muscatine to Clinton is up the Mississippi so that's in. I also sort of
want to over night in Fort Atkinson just before the end because I'm hoping
Bill Camplin (a musician who lives there and runs a music venue) is in
town. I used to hear him a lot way back when and...well you know how that
goes.

There's another route that goes through Madison and just adds a few (not
that many miles) and I'd consider that as well.

Anyway, if anyone has thoughts on this, let me know.

And, if anyone is doing RAGBRAI this year, let's chat!

Aloha,

Bob

[RBW] Wow. California gets mud.

2016-01-24 Thread Manuel Acosta
It's been a while.
But with marriage and house looking. Bike photos becomes secondary.

Anyways. Breaking news!
When you get a week of rain, after a 5 year drought in California, the
trails won't be dry.

Pictures proved that there was mudd and the ride was a sub10 miler:

Cool shots and video Erl! Thanks for posting.
Haven't measured here but I would guess ~27" in Howard County, MD.

Alas, I'm trapped about a mile deep in an unplowed neighborhood. The county

[RBW] Seeking Alejandro

2016-01-24 Thread Tom Virgil
I was out on a mission today, seeking a homeless man in our "outback", such
as it is, here, and ran into this situation.

Alejandro Land

They are geese, right? What kind of geese might they be? They seem to be
staying here for a week or so on their journey.

I have not found Alejandro, yet, but am following signs. There was
evidence of a recent fire on makeshift hearth within range of the debris
area images and tracks of his oh so overladen cart. I will be out tomorrow
on Sam Hillborne seeking further.

There is a deep story to this (I think I have related it to Hugh). In
brief, Alejandro is a homeless man who has slipped through the cracks of
both Mexican (in his native country) and US social services (here). He
lives out in the brush with a cart laden an awesome load of God knows what
that is important to him. Little or no English. Diminished Spanish,
although that is his native language. Had he grown up here, I am sure
there would be a label for him. He has a mission every day to haul the
cart several miles to a Ralph's market and then back again to the boonies.
Alejandro is defiant about not giving up his life choices. People in the
hood try to minister to him and get him into better circumstances, but that
is not for him. l am fortunate to live in what might be called "Pill
Hill", and our DM (Doctor of Medicine) neighbors do the same as I, go out,
find him, and treat him when necessary.

Sorry, no bike images (owe you all, Sam is just so coooL). Got
distracted by where Sam Hillborne takes me and has me doing.

~Tom

[RBW] Re: A Soma San Marcos (Amos) Build

2016-01-24 Thread lucero
Here's how this Amos looks after a few weeks of tinkering:

I raised the bars up nice and high and mounted Mark's rack with a medium
Wald. In the original photoset you might have noticed a slight dip in the
fender line below the fork crown. I opened up more front fender clearance
by:

   - replacing the L-shaped fender mounting bracket with a fork crown daruma
   - swapping the Tektro R559 out for a Paul Racer

I'm happy with the results. Kudos to Box Dog Bikes for the help.

Re: [RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

2016-01-24 Thread Patrick Kelly
Patrick,

I'm not used to the bars yet. I feel most comfortable on them so far
with my hands placed farther forward. I'm OK with sitting up more, and
having my hands back. I think I'll have to spend more time before I
make a real decision about the bars. It is true that there are
multiple working positions. Definite bonus on that. I suspect I'll
move the brake levers and shifters more forward on my own bike.

I've been on a quest for The Perfect Handlebar for a while now. I
currently have a jones loop on my main bike, and was convinced it
would be perfect when I bought it, but, alas, it is not perfect. I
fear The Perfect Bar does not exist. :(

Looks cool, thanks for the pics!

How are those bars? They look wy up there, but I'm guessing that's the
point.

They are just below or even with the saddle. That's hardly "way up there"

[RBW] Re: Mid-Atlantic 2016 Snow

2016-01-24 Thread WETH
After shoveling out the cars and sidewalk, I attempted a ride. The studded
tires provided great traction. The snowplows entered my neighborhood about
the time I started my ride. Not wanting to be a nuisance or put myself or
others in danger, I headed home. Many streets remain unplowed or only
plowed on car width. Once things settle down, I look forward to more
riding.
Photos prove it snowed: https://flic.kr/s/aHskpSr9fb
Stay safe out there,

[RBW] Re: OT Vintage MTB rehab project.

2016-01-24 Thread Dave Johnston

I have some various manf 34, 32, and Stainless 24t rings in 94/58 I would
be willing to sell.

Surly also sells Stainless rings in a variety of 94mm sizes up to 36t. I
did not like the quality of the Real brand. Really thick cut teeth.

The TA rings are awesome but pricey:

[RBW] WTT//WTB: Paul Motolites for Paul Touring Cantis...

2016-01-24 Thread Patch T
Hello all,

I'm interested in a trade or buy. Looking for a set of used Paul Touring
Cantis, silver or black.

I have a set of used Motolites, black, front and rear, and would ideally
love to make a trade for Cantis in similar condition, or we can work out
the difference monetarily.

I'm bad at mileage calculations... but they're in great shape mechanically,
almost 2 years old, scuffs/scratches here and there. Mix of commuting and
trail-riding, almost daily.

Otherwise if you have a pair for sale, let me know.

Thanks!
