2016-02-12 Thread Hugh Smitham
Most before work rides these days are on my gofast Trek 660. I love it! I
rode up the canyon today and was treated to two red tailed hawks riding the
thermals. I thought to myself that's what I feel like on this bike, like
I'm flying but err on the ground. Now i want a hawk in flight headbadge.

2016-02-12 Thread 'Mark Etze' via RBW Owners Bunch

Robin Williams said that riding a bike was the closest you could get to
flying. On a nice back road with no cars around I definitely agree.

My go fast is a 1980's Proteus recently brought back to life after sitting
for 10 years due to a bent fork. I think after sitting all this time it
wants to fly too.

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-12 Thread Tony DeFilippo
You'd need the bolt by itself, all the Riv seat post braze ons in familiar with
are recessed for a nut on one side and an Allen bolt recessed on the other.
I'm guessing the Joe will follow suit.

So it's just the length you need to figure out. I'm not positive but wouldn't
the proper length be common for any Riv with a similar seat post braze on? I
can measure mine tonight... Neat website, thanks for sharing.

Anyone have experience with the leather 'cardif mercia' seats they are selling?
 They look like B17 clones.

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-12 Thread Zed Martinez
I'm using a Pinhead locking skewer on my Clem right now. As Riv warns, they
work, but you'll eventually chip the paint. In keeping with that Clemmy
spirit I decided that was an OK compromise, plus with my saddle bag always
hanging over it it's not like any touch-up paint in the future will be so
visible. Otherwise, they do work, mostly. You have to crank'em pretty tight,
and I had to use a little Loctite 609 (thanks other discussion on here
about slipping seat posts for introducing me to that bit of magic) to fix
some slow slip it had even then, but it's been rock solid for the past
month now. Didn't know about those bolts you're linking to there, though.
Those will probably work better. I've got the outside to outside on my
Clem's binder clamp bits at 35mm, so, it's possible the 30mm bolt would be
long enough once in the recesses.

Let me know more about your expected route (I don't believe the Divide route

Check the Hunq pics on the Riv site: couple good shots. The brakes adjust

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-12 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Patrick,
Assuming it's the same seat lug as other Rivs (excepting Clem, I think),
then you'll need to replace the "M6 Hex Socket Cap, 22mm length" with the
security bolt.

I went with the pitlock skewers and seat post binder bolt. They're really
spendy, but I don't worry about my wheels or seat post anymore. I think the
visible parts of the pitlock skewers are nice looking, for what that's
worth.

(One could still take the saddle by unscrewing at the rail/post interface.)

There are ways to secure the quill, but, other than putting a ball bearing
in there, it gets complicated. If I was that concerned about it, I probably
wouldn't be riding my Riv.

Good luck!
shoji

I rode my Riv. custom (basically a beefed-up Atlantis-type frame,
customized for me) from Calgary to Banff, then took the Great Divide to
Whitefish MT. Full load, front/rear bags, saddle and handlebar bags.
Ritchey Crossbite (1.6") tires. No problems whatsoever. You can see some
photos on the "Gallery" page at www.handsonwheels.com. My advice: don't
over-plan -- "just ride."

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-12 Thread jeffrey kane
Nothing against the Pit Lock using contingent here (he says in advance to
avoid further ruffling anyone's feathers) but the security bolt idea is a
great and inexpensive solution -- you just need to remember to pack along
the appropriate tamper resistant hex L- wrench if you're the type that
likes to make adjustments on the fly. It's a nearly fool-proof solution
since the Riv binder design embeds the nylock nut flush on the other side
.. all you're left to worry about is the parts pinching thief who carries
around a set of security wrenches with him while out hunting. And btw: you
can replace the saddle clamp bolt the same way, as well.

Shioji's spec is spot-on for the Riv standard seatpost binder. Lastly, the
wrenches that Security Bolts supplies with your purchase are pretty nice
but if you're looking to upgrade then Bondhus sells a decent set work
looking into:

Mark, glad you started this. I am planning on leaving Banff in mid-July on
a Surly Ogre w 2.2 tires , using my Ortliebs on Tubus racks, as always my
bike will be heavy. Would like to get to that gathering in Missoula to
celebrate the 40th but the timing doesn't work for me. Hope to see some of

[RBW] Re: Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-02-12 Thread Mark Reimer
Oh nice, that custom is GORGEOUS!!

That settles it then. I'm hoping to do Jasper to Banff in three days, then
Banff to Missoula in 5-6 days.

Is sticky mud a big concern? I've been riding 2.1" Tires in the Atlantis
for added mud clearance. If it's mostly rocky/gravel I'd opt for 2.25.

Can't wait!

Trek 330 - 650b'd, needs to be built back up, but certainly go-fast

BMC Monster Cross - coming soon, undecided in build, but most likely a

[RBW] Re: Rosco Bubbe

2016-02-12 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Right, Joe. Here's the whole short story: When somebody buys a bike, we
have to account for the possibility that they'll smash a fork in a wreck.
We don't keep statistics on this, but it's got to be way less than 1
percent, and way more than zero (as the bent Roadeo fork in the current
BLUG shows).
Over the years our accumulation of forks has reached 184. Some raw
(unpainted), some painted, and all of them specific to one model and size.
Betty forks painted Betty blue with the red detailing; orange Sam forks,
and lots of raw Sams and Simpleone forks. A few Hunqa forks.
They all have threaded steerers that require head tubes of a certain length
(plus/minus 2cm, depending how many head tube spacers used). Or, they could
be cut and converted to 1-inch threadless, but we've opted to minimize the
work on them, and just use them as they are.

We've counted and separated the forks, and in the last few days I've been
designing frames around them. The beacon is head tube length. If I
determine that a fork requires a HTL of 235mm, that steers some aspects of
the design. The frame can be small, with a radicaly upsloping Top Tube, or
it can be bigger, with less upslope. It can be a mixte or not.

We can't afford to do these bikes with normal joint lugs, so we'll tig 'em
and sort of modify the CLEM way. There will be mini lugs, and the fork
crown is a lug, but the tubes will be tigged together. This gives us more
flexibility and reduces cost, and the idea is ten of these, eight of those,
fourteen of something else, in a variety of styles. We may offer frames
only, we may offer whole bikes only---that depends on a number of things
that nobody in the real world out there has access to, so there's no need
right now to build a strong case either way.

Rather than create a new model for each variation--and the decals and badge
to go along--we gunna callemall ROSCO - BUBBE, a catchall name for these
few-of-a-kind bikes that allow us to put the fantastic forks to good use,
and heaven forbid, clear out some shelf space in the warehouse and make
some pocket money.

I'm having fun designing the bikes. I'm taking advantage of the inherent
flexibility and the low numbers to -- from my POV-- have a little fun with
them. The designs will make sense, but may offend classicists. One idea
that really turns me on also makes me nervous, but it'll affect twelve
frames, and they'll be unique and spectacular, and it's a smart way to go.

Waterford may build some. Some will definitely be MIT<--made in Taiwan. We
may offer a "name it yourself" option with the leftover separate letter
packs that never got used on the CLEMs.

Overall, it's better to make killer bikes from the languishing forks than
to enable their languishing, so that's what we're going to do. No more
details are available at this time, but we'll make it fun and good.

[RBW] Re: Nice ride today, or: everyone needs a gofast road bike.

2016-02-12 Thread RJM
I love my go fast bike, which is my Roadeo. I did not ride it last night
outside, but rather have it hooked up to a stationary trainer in the house,
which I rode for an hour. Winter is my mountain bike time and I stuck a
trainer tire on the Roadeo for a month or two until it warms a little. I
don't really ride the Roadeo on dirt or gravel unless I hit a bad road
while wandering around. I'm currently riding 25mm tires on it and I cannot
complain about being held back on speed with this Riv.

So, I currently have 4 ride-able bikes.

Roadeo - Go fast road bike
Atlantis - Touring bike
Trek Fuel EX 29'er - Full suspension trail bike
Niner Sir9 - Rigid Single speed XC bike

I need to get a bunch of parts and wheels sold off because I would kinda
dig a Riv mountain bike, but that Sir9 is way cool, being steel.

2016-02-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Sweet! I really like this semi-TIGed direction you guys are taking so there can
be more design flexibility, plus the ability to provide a lower point of entry
for Riv frames. Of course the fancy fully-lugged frames will always be the
cat's pajamas of Rivendell, but I think it's fair to say that steel tubes
connected in the correct geometry is more important than the joining method.
Every time I get on my new CLEM, the first/only thing I notice is how great it
rides. The only time I ever think about which parts are welded and which parts
are lugged is when it's sitting in the living room. And most of THAT time is
spent looking at the bendy stays and thinking, "I don't care what anybody says,
I'm SURE they're shock absorbing." Bring on ROSCO! ;-)

Yes, definitely protect the paint. I had two spots rubbed through to bare metal
on my Homer. I'll still use the rack if I have to but will protect with foam or
a towel. Two or three layers of electrical tape would probably work well. My
two spots were under the top tube and on the seat tube where it meets the top
tube.

2016-02-12 Thread dougP
Duct tape foam pipe insulation around all the tubes to protect them.
Remove the pedals. Use the luggage (for a trip of that distance there must
luggage eh?) for packing. The bike will be fine.

The rack is OK but I'd worry about theft. Pipe insulation & bungee cords
or Keven's straps can secure the bike & protect it from damage. Hanging
it's not going to hurt a thing.

Dave:

My Atlantis is a 58 & my PBH is 85-86 cm. I've ridden Hugh's 56 & also
Ian's 61. The 56 would only require minor seat adjustment to fit and the
61 felt a bit stretched out, with not much stand-over clearance (on 45 mm
Smart Sams). If you look on the Atlantis sizing chart there is overlap
between sizes so they're pretty versatile that way. If your PBH is within
the size range for a given size you are fine. Let your PBH be your guide.

[RBW] Reviews and/or photos of Big Ben 700c X 55 tires?

2016-02-12 Thread iamkeith
Is anybody in a position to share experiences with these tires? I'm able
to find photos and comments for the 50mm version, but *nothing* about the
55mm version. Photos of them mounted on a bike would be fantastic!

On the surface, it looks like it might provide a good compromise of the
traits I'm seeking, but it kind of falls at the absolute skinniest end of
the size range I'd want. If it runs true to size, it could work. But, if it
runs small, then I don't know. I believe (hope) that all of the photos on
the website are of the 50mm version, so there's no way to even judge. I'm
slightly worried about it being too stiff too, but that's only because I've
been spoiled by increasingly supple tires over the past few years.

I know that this group tends to gravitate that direction as well - like the
new Big One which is a *great* size, but I think that might be too fragile.
I'm a little skeptical even of the Super Moto which, as far as I can
tell, is a level up from the Big One in terms of both traction and
durability. Or could that the best choice?

I'm thinking about putting these on my Clem which I bought with the
intention of setting up more as an off-pavement dirt/trail bike but,
because of the fit, now think will be better suited as a pathway/town
bike. I'll still need to use it on some rough, rocky.. but level..
surfaces though. All academic until the snow melts, but I'm dying to ride
this bike and want to be ready to roll.

Thanks for whatever info you've got

Re: [RBW] Reviews and/or photos of Big Ben 700c X 55 tires?

2016-02-12 Thread Tim Gavin
Super Motos are excellent tires. They have tons of grip on pavement,
gravel, and dirt. They will slide on loose dirt and mud, though.

The tread of the Big Ben would be a bit more secure in the slop than the
Super Moto's, but they're a heavier, less supple tire. I think you'd be
giving up some of the cushion and speed possibilities of a large, supple
tire by going with Big Bens.

However, I think Super Motos are out of production now (replaced by the Big
One).

Thunder Burts are even lighter than any of the discussed tires (besides the
Big One), and knobbier as well. They're pretty fantastic, and come in 2.1"
and 2.25" widths in 650b and 700c (2.1" only for 26").
I swapped out the Super Motos on my bike for Thunder Burts.

I was thinking of putting the Sam in the trunk, but the pedal/crank will

Hi Dave,

My PBH is 84cm~84.5cm and saddle height 72.5cm~73cm.

I have ridden a 53.5cm, 58cm & 61cm the 53.5cm felt small but rode really
nice. The 58cm felt good and would fit me with very little standover but
would work it felt a bit taller but not a deal breaker. I was planning off
road riding so went with more stand over. The 61cm great but clearly too
large. It was a toss up between the 56 & 58.

[RBW] 2,000 miles safe for a Riv-bike on a car trunk rack?

2016-02-12 Thread islaysteve
I'd be more concerned about carrying the bike outside the car, in the weather,
parking ( theft risk), rear end collision, etc than I would be about the weight
issue. Take one pedal off to better distribute the load while it's lying on
its side, brace it or something. Anything is better than outside, IMO. Steve

Yes, you are overthinking this. The bike will be fine on the trunk rack
provided nothing obviously bad happens. If you are scared of something bad

weekend time to get some bike riding in, at least till they turn 4 or 5 and
they start filling your calendar with activities, b-day parties, etc.

My wife and I approach it like divorced parents with custody time (but
we're happily married): I take the toddler on Saturday (and usually hit up
some parks, zoos, or museums) while she works out, does yoga, and does all
the things she needs to do. Then on Saturday its her turn and I take the
bike out, coming back right around the end of afternoon nap time. Works
great! For now ;)

Odds are good it would damage the paint. Racks like that are
notoriously hard on bike paint jobs.

I was thinking of putting the Sam in the trunk, but the pedal/crank
will bear all the weight/vibration during the trip, being pinned to
the car floor under the weight of the bike. Not sure if 30 hours of
that is ok for the arm/bb/pedal.

Worst case, if you're worried roll up an old towel and stick it under
the frame. But the weight of a frame isn't really very much
