Why go uphill faster? As long as you don't fall over, meh? More time to

[RBW] Re: [socalallrounders] Re: Strada Rossa March 19th... you all are invited!

2016-02-15 Thread cyclotourist
David, sorry to not have replied to you sooner... life happens sometimes.

I'm ecstatic you and your wife can make it! It's practically in your back
yard, right! The 100km is the signature event, so it's the one to shoot for
in my opinion!

You brought up two related question. The first is about your tires. The
Nano/Knard combo will be fine. Anything more than 40mm is unnecessary.
As the second question is about bikes/tires, I'll add that like Mike
mentioned, some light knobbie tread will be really appreciated. So
whichever bike she brings I think she'll be happier with the tire that has
some knobs. That and whichever frame she will be most comfortable on for
six+ hours. Oh, and gearing for hills.

I don't think goatheads are going to be a big problem. I've been pre-riding
with my my road bike on Challenge Eroicas, which are pretty thin rubber. No
problems. So don't choose a tire just for puncture resistance. Pick the
tire for the terrain: 30 miles of roads, and 30 miles of hardpack. A few
short sand sections. As insurance, taking out the valve core and putting a
couple ounces of Stans wouldn't hurt at all. I'd do that before tire
liners. In fact, that is what I do!

So don't know if that helped clear things up for you. I hope some. Anything
else, definitely let me know!

Was out in the hills today, and it's beautiful!

[RBW] Re: Route Suggestions: LA to Joshua Tree

2016-02-15 Thread Dave C
Daniel,

I don't know how you may have since modified your route, but I took some
pictures of where your route enters into Lytle Creek. Baldy Rd descends
into this area and then you would take the fire roads to Swarthout Canyon.

Parts of the roads are like rock gardens, others are hard packed dirt with
little rocks all around.

We rode from Lone Pine Canyon to this area today, and the climbs were a
taxing workout. If you believe you can make this route work out, let me
know - we can pick you two up and give you a place to shower and sleep for
the night, if you want.

Oh, and I totally agree about the stout wheels thing. I've noticed the

[RBW] Re: CLEM-mentum

That's why the Clem has a thicker seat tube than previous Rivs!

In all seriousness, it would be interesting to discover that Riv had
stumbled into a new way of inducing planing, even in stoutly-tubed
bicycles: make the tubes longer!

Can't wait to build up my Clem!

Goatheads are a serious problem so tire up as best you can. I've used 40mm

damage. People do this ride on everything from skinny tired racing bikes

[RBW] Re: Strada Rossa March 19th... you all are invited!

2016-02-15 Thread Dave C
David, everybody,

Just registered my wife and I for the 100km. We thought about the English
century, but we have to arrange babysitting and bring the kids down to
Redlands. A hundred miler might take too much time. Probably my mom (KC)
and dad will participate in the half-metric event.

I've never been on the course, but it seems the trails around there are a
bit smoother than our fire roads, which are rutted, rocky things that most
people tackle with 29ers, Jeeps, and lifted trucks. Would a 41 mm Knard /
40 mm Nano combo on my Soma Double Cross be fine? Not overkill, I hope. My
wife has to decide between her Glorius, Romulus, or 29er. She has Hetres on
the Glorius, and if she takes it I thought we might want to put in tire
liners. I don't get a ton of thorns here in the San Gabriels, but I hear
goat heads are more common around Redlands.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. We like to ride fast and light when
possible, but I'm not looking to get any "under-biking awards" :)

Re: [RBW] Re: CLEM-mentum

2016-02-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Heavier wheels very definitely contribute to a "momentum" feel. One thing I
miss on my otherwise most excellent 26" fixed gears is that feeling of
"keep on rolling." The (1) light and (2) shorter radius wheels simply don't
carry the momentum that larger and heavier wheels do.

OTOH, they get up to speed faster, and seem to climb faster.

I recall a very nice ride through West LA years ago riding an early 60s
Paramount track bike (that had huge clearances and handled like a very nice
road bike) with 40 spoke Campy wheels -- yes, the combination was not OEM.
Those heavy wheels just rolled and rolled.

After so many years of riding both, I have to say that I like both, and
would in the future choose my wheels with other criteria in mind than
"feel."

Fascinating feedback, Joe. My daughters love their Clementines, though they
haven't enough experience to describe a "slight build in tail wind once
spun up". Of course, around here there is no flat, so getting "spun up" is
a pipe dream. Grin. However, they are more eager to go on rides and they
enjoy them more than their early 90's Trek MTBs with Bosco bars. They are
definitely faster, smoother and broader grinning on the Clementines.

To expound a little more on the ride, the feeling is like a slight tailwind:

[RBW] Re: Winter Clem Tire: BG Rock n Roads, Schwalbe Smart Sams, or Vee Rubber V12

2016-02-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
I meant to add that whatever you put on, you will learn. As Tim mentions,
some conditions favor a narrower tire (wet snow) while other conditions
favor wide tire for float (my preference for around here in Colorado
mountains). Experiment and learn. Plan on screwing up (when you learn from
screwing up, it wasn't really screwing up!).

A note on TBs: they are (I suspect anyway) knobby Big Ones -- so if that's
the tire you want but in snow, the TBs will be brilliant. I'm in the
minority for preferring them to a knobbier tire in snow, so your milage may
vary. But I love mine in virgin powder, packed powder, peanut butter
chowder, packed snow, frozen slush, slush -- everything but solid ice. I'm
kinda stupid that way. Grin.

Re: [RBW] Re: Nice ride today, or: everyone needs a gofast road bike.

2016-02-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I select my gears, then choose the mix of rings and cogs I need to get
them. For a "gofast" road bike ("fast is very relative) I like a 65", 70",
ad 75" right in the middle of the cogset. If I can get close steps with a
~40" low and a ~80-to-90" high, I'm happy.

On my erstwhile Ram I got these gears in 2 ways: first with a 44/30
subcompact crankset and a 14-15-16-17-18-20-23 7 speed, with the 44
positioned for use with all cogs. After buying a very pretty 7410 crankset,
I did much the same with a compact ("-") 52/38 and a
16-17-18-19-20-21-22-24-27 9 speed. The gaps with the bigger rings weren't
as efficiently spaced, for my needs, whence the 9 instead of the 7. But the
crank was so pretty, I had to use it.

I realize that my gearing choices indicate certain obsessive compulsive
tendencies.

[RBW] Re: OT- Seattle road trip recommendations

2016-02-15 Thread franklyn
Hi, Mike,

I am not a Seattle resident but have vacationed yearly in the Pacific
Northwest for the last three years. I would recommend taking a drive up to
Anacortes and take the ferry to San Juan Islands. This time of the year,
the ferry traffic may be OK, but you should check out the online ferry
reservation for cars just to make sure you can get on the island. If you
can find rental and/or loaner bikes, you can park your car at the ferry
terminal in Anacortes and walk on the ferry without worrying about
reservation. You can also rent bikes on at least the main island.

The great thing about the islands are that they are gorgeous and allow you
to do a whole host of activities--biking, hiking, kayaking. They are also
much dryer than the Olympic Peninsula and Seattle. I have read that the
islands have more than 260 dry days out of a year. The drive from Seattle
to Anacortes is just over an hour without traffic. And on the way back you
can drive on the west side of the peninsula from Anacortes back to Seattle.

Here are some photos I took in the last three years.

San Juan Islands trips

Have fun!

Re: [RBW] Winter Clem Tire: BG Rock n Roads, Schwalbe Smart Sams, or Vee Rubber V12

2016-02-15 Thread Tim Gavin
They all seem like OK choices.

Rock n Roads have pretty horizontal tread, so they should develop decent
traction. Smart Sams have the knobbiest tread for the most traction, and
the V12s have the least knobby (besides the Big Ones).

Some folks prefer a narrower tire (like the RnR) for winter commuting,
because it cuts through the slush. Others prefer a wider tire (like the
others) because it provides more float.

[RBW] Re: Nice ride today, or: everyone needs a gofast road bike.

2016-02-15 Thread Dave Johnston
I just swapped out to a 46-38-24 w 12-28 7spd on my go fast, from a
50-38-26 &11-28 as a winter project. I felt like the 50t was overkill and I
was swapping cranks for other reasons so I thought I'd give it a try. I
don't have any real riding time on this setup yet but on a steep downhill I
missed the easy slow spin to keep up the speed (I probably should have just
enjoyed the coast). I may put the 11t back on.

My other lightweight zippy bike is a Rawland Stag with 43-29 and 11-34
9spd. I coast or spin the downhills on that one and that's OK too! I really
like the simpler shifting of the double.

[RBW] Quickbeam on the Range

2016-02-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
Rampart range is the mountains that run from Pikes Peak to just South of
Denver and paved Highway 67 rides the plateau on the western side of
Rampart Range. It is a lovely gentle rolling 15 miles from Woodland Park to
Westcreek (where the road then drops down into a canyon to Deckers, but I
didn't do that today). Cloudy, 35˚F, winds steady at 20 mph, gusting to 40.
Once I got past the "suburbs" of Woodland Park, the highway was mine, with
the little traffic easily able to pass. Snow on the side of the road, but
the road clear and open. What a joy ride! I just needed low gear for the
climb to Woodland Park both directions. 40ish miles. Here's the QB with
Pikes Peak peaking through the triangle.

With abandon,
Patrick

Joe,
What tires are you running? I have Schwalbe Big Ones on my big Clem and I

[RBW] Winter Clem Tire: BG Rock n Roads, Schwalbe Smart Sams, or Vee Rubber V12

2016-02-15 Thread David Banzer
I rode my Clem around a little bit yesterday in a light snow shower on some
park paths to test out the Schwalbe Big Ones that are currently on.
I went a lot slower than normal, but the consensus was that I need
something with a little grip to ride in light snow, and the Big Ones won't
cut it. I have a bike with studded tires already, but want to set up my
Clem so I can ride in wintry weather.
Ideally I'd want Schwalbe Thunder Burts I think, but I'd order them from a
German distributor and it could take a few weeks before they arrive. Add on
a pretty mild snowfall total this winter in Chicago, and I'd rather use
what I have then buy more tires.

I have:
Bruce Gordon Rock n Roads (700x43)
Schwalbe Smart Sams (2.1")
Vee Rubber V12 (1.95", sort of micro knob tread)

Which would you choose?

[RBW] OT- Seattle road trip recommendations

2016-02-15 Thread Mike
My SO is headed to Seattle in a few weeks for a work related training session.
I plan on joining her afterwards for a short Pacific Northwestern holiday.

I am not, unfortunately, going to be bringing a bike, but I hope to try out the
bike share when we are in Seattle.

We are considering renting a car for a few days and exploring farther afield.
I have some questions for the Seattle folks on the list.

Could anyone offer any route suggestions for a short road trip? We are
tentatively thinking of heading around the Olympic peninsula. How would that
be, weather-wise, in early March? Would heading somewhere inland (like Mt
Rainier) be totally out of the question at that time of year? Any other
suggestions? We are thinking we will have three days, two nights to work with.

We are happy just driving around and exploring, maybe some short walks,
brewpubs, diners, cheap motels. Any suggestions, tips, or warnings would be
greatly appreciated!

Please respond directly to bee...@gmail.com so as not to clutter up the list
with OT responses.

Thanks- Mike, thawing out in Bkln, NY

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-02-15 Thread Dave Johnston
PS if you want really nice micro ratchet friction shifting try the
microshift 9spd swapped backwards Riv style with the left on the right and
the right on the left. The left has a nice micro ratchet. The right can be
used with 9 clicks for the front derail or change the mode to pure
friction. If, in the future, you decide you want 9s index you can always
use them as designed.

I've seen the Microshift 9s with friction option for about $85 shipped.
Make sure you get the kind with the friction option.

You can also try to find old suntour thumb shifters and do the same but
then you will likely only find 7s option and the ebay prices for beat up
old shifters can be just as high.

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-02-15 Thread Dave Johnston
I confirmed today for my own curiosity that Shimano bar end shifters will
fit on a Sunrace 9spd index thumby mount. I'm not sure it makes sense to do
so however as Shimano bar ends are expensive and you could just buy a 8 or
9 spd index only Sun Race thumby. Or you for about the same price as
Shimano bar ends get a pair of Microshift 9spd thumbies with a pure
friction option (8 spd w friction is in the catalog but I've never seen one
for sale).

Shimano shifters will not mount on the microshift thumby mounts.

Note that with index options you will have to mount them on top like
thumbshifters of old. Not on the inside like Riv does.

My plan with the Joe, when it comes, is to try it as stock, then slowly
replace everything but the frame and fork.

Good idea! It might be a bit creepy, but Tad Lewd might fly as a model

Maybe there's an electric motor hiding in the seat tube. This calls for a

Re: [RBW] Rat Trap Pass and Atlantis w/fenders

2016-02-15 Thread Tim Gavin
I don't have an Atlantis to try RTPs on, but SKS P65 fenders are the proper
size for 26 x 2.3".

I've used them over 26 x 60 mm Super Motos and Fat Franks with great
success.

The P65 Longboards have excellent coverage.

Re: [RBW] Re: "My first Roadeo" and chainline/BB question

2016-02-15 Thread Chad
Thanks for the info. Your results are similar to mine. I mounted the G-Ones
on Velocity Aeroheads (also 20mm external). They measured out to a true 35mm
(700x35 nominal) and I have about 5mm at the brake bridges and about 2mm at the
stays. I am mostly likely going to sale these if you are interested in trying
them. Maybe I'll put them on my RB-T.

My 26 x 2.1" TBs measure 51 mm on Mavic 319 rims (23 mm external). I think
most modern MTB tires measure their stated width on a modern, wide rim (>25
mm external). I.e., their stated width is more like a "maximum" width on
the widest rims, and a narrower rim will limit the size a slight amount.

At least, this is my experience with Schwalbe, Continental, and WTB tires.
They seem to be a couple mm narrower than their stated width on classic 23
mm MTB rims.

The Challenge Gravel Grinders are nominally 700 x 38.
Their actual measurement is 36 mm wide on Mavic Open Pro rims (20 mm
external).
The chainstay clearance is <2 mm with those tires, so a tire that actually
measures 38 mm may rub.
Brake arm clearance is ~5 mm in front and rear under Tektro R539 calipers.

I was considering the 700 x 35 Schwalbe G-One or 700 x 32 Panaracer Gravel
King (slick tread) tires. But, I found a barely used pair of 700 x 32
(knobby) Gravel Kings on eBay, so I'll roll on those.

I haven't test-ridden the Roadeo yet, with either tire. The streets are
way too sloppy here for a non-fendered bike.
I did ride ~20 miles on my fat bike yesterday, in 2" of fresh powder.
