I got the email too and at first thought it was back just to me. I also think
the high number of people signed up does not represent anywhere near what will
eventually be buying a bike. Take me for instance. I am curious to see what
they come up with but on the other hand am pretty much decided to,get a joe
Appaloosa. I would not then buy another bike in the summer or even the fall at
that point. Good he has generated some interest though. Always a positive.

[RBW] Re: Removing shellac on paint

2016-02-22 Thread Steven Butcher
Drew, one more suggestion would be to try WD-40 which contains some
solvents. I've used it to remove dried Frame Saver over spray and did not
experience any harm to the paint. It washes off easily and allows
application of a wax or polish.

[RBW] looking for a Nitto 34f front rack, or reassurance, or advice or something

2016-02-22 Thread Robert Liebermann
Having decided I really like my current Surly front rack's configuration
(high/low possibility, top rack, sturdy - I like to carry my tent and pad
on the front rack top). I like sturdy and don't mind heavy!

I don't like those racks with the 'butterfly wing' (my term) lowrider
add-ons (e.g., F25) that seem to push the bag outward from the hub (and
can't figure out why that'd be useful, unless one has really huge QR levers
or wants looks like 1950s FR designs)

So I decided a while back I'd get a Nitto 34f for a new Woodrup I'm
getting, to have something a bit fancier than the Surly's ugly soft rub-off
paint. Nobody else seems to have anything as 'cool' for my needs.

Looking over some Nitto, Rivendell, etc. stuff the other day I found the
34f isn't in the2016 Nitto catalog, Rivendell's out , and can't find one
for sale elsewhere (Ben's used to have them but have been out since last
summer). Can't tell how much of this related to R's statement that it's
their design so confused.

I added my name to Rivendell's let me know if it comes back' list, but have
never had much luck emailing these sorts of questions to them directly.

Does anybody have one to sell, or know where to get one, or have
commentary?

Is it likely these'll come back at Rivendell, or should I panic buy
where/when I can? (an increasingly useful 'modern world' skill I learned
living in the USSR!) Ideally they'll be available into the autumn of 2016,
which is when I really need it (and when I'm not in alaska).

Also considering a Tubus 'cosmo' rear rack (again, to replace my existing
surly rear), since the Nitto 33R seems to push the pannier back way, way
too far. Wish they'd copy the Surly design in that nice Nitto way!

Thanks,

robert 'not just another nice rack' liebermann

[RBW] Re: Surly Nice rear rack on Atlantis?

2016-02-22 Thread Ben
I had one on a 68cm Atlantis. I liked the big wide platform and sturdy
industrial looks. Like Tim says it is very adjustable. I was running linear
pull brakes and it took a bit of a tweak to the mounting at the top of the
seat stays to keep the arms of the brakes from hitting the mounting rods.

[RBW] Re: Does a MacBook Air 13 in a protective sleeve fit inside the Sackville Hub Area Bag?

2016-02-22 Thread Phil Bickford
Rene - I've no specific experience with a MacBook Air but I almost wrecked
my old MacBook on it's first commute. The cover and shell material is not
as effective as it could be. I wrapped my MacBook in some lightish thin
foam and placed that in a neoprene zip bag (as the one they sell as cover
bags) then placed that in my rear pannier standing vertically. The pannier
has only one protrusion inside, from the fastener of the lower hook that
holds the pannier firm onto the side of the rack. I arrived at work with
all intact but when booting up it showed what could have been a dead spot
in the screen.

While running it's not obvious, but shut down the screen shows a distorted
area where the MacBook bumped along in the padded package. I'm not sure
but I suspect the only safe way to transport these soft sided machines
would be the appropriately sized otter box with hard sides. The folks at
RBW may have a better alternative, most of them commute with Apple products.

[RBW] Re: FS: Garage sale! Wheels, Tires, Fork, Pedals, Derailleurs, Bike Bag, Complete MTB...

2016-02-22 Thread Jeremy Till
Bump, lower prices on most everything, feel free to make me an offer. Come
pick up some cool stuff while you're in town for NAHBS!

-27" (630mm) fixed gear rear wheel, $45. Sun CR-18 rim, Origin-8 branded
Formula sealed bearing, double sided fixed gear hub, Wheelsmith 14g
spokes. Currently spaced at 126mm but can be spaced up or down by adding
or removing spacers on both sides; plenty of axle length to even go up to
130mm. Handbuilt by me, not a whole lot of miles ridden before it was put
in storage, I recently trued it and checked the tension. Bearings spin
smoothly.

-26" (559mm) rim brake front wheel, $50. Mavic XM 317 rim laced to Shimano
LX hub with DT 14g spokes. Handbuilt by QBP's wheel shop, formerly
"Handspun," now "Quality Wheels." Used by my wife on the front wheel of
her commuter for 2.5 years until I built her a dyno wheel this past fall.
Runs true and spins well.

-Front and rear first gen Shimano Deore "Deerhead" derailleurs (FD- and
RD-M700), $40. Perfect functionally, OK cosmetically. Came on an old
Takara touring bike I converted to fixed gear. Cool old derailleurs, I
always thought I'd find a use for them, but honestly all of my derailleur
bikes are indexed these days.

-4 pairs of Time ATAC pedals, $20 each or $70 takes all of them. All of my
old clipless pedals, I now ride flats exclusively. One pair of the old
(original?) grey plastic ATAC's with the large inboard bearing, two pairs
of the "Alium" model including one silver "HP" pair, and one pair of circa
2006 ATAC XE's. All are functional, and the three older pairs still spin
beautifully, with no play in the springs, although the RH black Alium is
missing the dust cap. Ironically, the newer XE's have a little bit of
bearing play and play in the springs.

-Look Bike Bag $40. Large main pocket for frame/fork and side wheel
pockets with enough room for two wheelsets. I bought this in Luxembourg
during a trip to Europe so I could take my bike on the French TGV trains.
I used it hard for a month and then for a couple of subsequent trips
involving flying with my bike, but since then It's mainly been used for
storing various frames, wheels and tires. It does have some tears and
holes in fabric and cardboard stiffener on the bottom, but with some
judicious patching it would be a great and cool way to transport your bike.
(Sorry folks, I can't ship this one).

-1" threadless Surly Cross-Check fork $35. Black powder coat, no logos,
sloping fork crown, ~26cm of steerer, star nut installed. This was the
fork on my Trek touring bike for many thousands of miles before I retired
that frame, so it's well used but in good shape. There's some areas on the
upper half of the steerer that seem to have been worn a little bit
smoother, possibly by headset spacers and a slightly loose headset, but
there are no scratches or gouges.
-1 pair WTB "Allterrainasaurus" 700x40mm tires, $30. Little or no use,
always stored inside, good shape, wire bead. These have a knobby tread
intended for mixed surfaces, a precursor to the current "gravel" tires
currently in vogue. These used to be my go-to summer tire on my touring
bike; they have good volume and roll well on pavement while providing
confidence off-road. Back then we called it "mixed-terrain" riding.
-1 Kenda "Slant Six" 29x2" wire bead tire, $10. XC tread with somewhat
minimal knobs; this is a 30TPI OEM spec tire so it's on the heavy side.
Used for less than a year on the front of my MTB before I swapped to
something lighter and with more aggressive tread. Plenty of life left.

Those are the parts. The bike pictured is a practically NOS 2008 Jamis
Dakota Sport aluminum hardtail MTB, 17", which we bought for my wife last
summer. She only rode it a couple of times on short MTB rides, and
recently she bought a Clem Smith Jr. from Rivendell that she can ride
off-road with, so this one is going. 9spd Deore/XT drivetrain, Shimano
hydro disc brakes, RS Tora fork. I'd do $400 for an iBOB.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tips for how to better handle Selfish Drivers?

2016-02-22 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Another sad reminder that this is not just idle conversation--these are
extremely experienced cyclists including a former Randonneurs of USA
president Mike Dayton who is reported to be in a coma:

Four Cyclists Hit in North Carolina While Riding Single File on a Rural Road

*All four bicyclists were transported to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh
with serious injuries.*

*The four bicyclists all have non-life-threatening injuries and were
identified as: Christopher Graham, age 34, Joel Arthur Lawrence, age 57,
Lynn Lashley, 57 and Michael Dayton, age 60, according to officials.*

*Donnie Marie Williams, the driver in the crash, did stop at the scene
after the crash, officials said.*

*Williams’ daughter came to the scene and told WNCN that her mother, who
was driving, didn’t see the bicyclists until it was too late.*

*Her mom was too distraught to speak. The daughter, Tiffany McElveen, says
her mother was coming up over the hill and didn’t see the cyclists. A car
was passing in the other direction and she panicked.*

*“…she didn’t know what to do. She didn’t know whether to hit the other car
or to try to miss the bicyclists,” McElveen said.*

*McElveen said that her mother was “hysterical” when she called her to the
scene.*

*“I really couldn’t hardly understand her. She just kept saying ‘Tiffany I
hit somebody, I hit somebody.’ She said ‘come down here, come down here.’ I
said ‘where you at’. She told me like ten times, but I couldn’t understand
what she was saying because she was so hysterical,” Tiffany McElveen said
of her mother, who was not injured.*

*Highway Patrol said two of the victims suffered head injuries.*

*The victims were listed in the following conditions at WakeMed:*

*Joel Lawrence, stable*
*Lynn Lashley, critical*
*Christopher Graham, stable*
*Mike Dayton, critical*

[RBW] Re: Tips for how to better handle Selfish Drivers?

2016-02-22 Thread Ron Mc
I have had exactly 4 encounters with motorists who believe cyclists didn't
belong on their road. The only one I took to task invited me, and began by
terrorizing my teenage daughter.
I have also seen many more cyclists who "give us a bad name" by blasting
through major intersections when they should be plugging into the traffic
signal.

My friend who last lived out here in the boonies longer, though, has had
bottles and beer cans thrown at him.

Re: [RBW] Surly Nice rear rack on Atlantis?

2016-02-22 Thread Tim Gavin
Not personally, but I saw one mounted on a Gunnar Grand Tour yesterday.
I've mounted one on my fat bike; I spread the legs to fit over the 190 OLD
rear end and then it fit just fine.

The Surly Nice rear rack is very adjustable for height and reach, so it
should fit without problem.

The Surly Nice rear rack is on the heavier-duty end of the rack scale, so
it's a bit heavy and may be more capability than you need.

[RBW] Re: Tips for how to better handle Selfish Drivers?

2016-02-22 Thread masmojo
Not to play devils advocate, but simply to say that simply calling the peiple
rude or stupid or assholes or whatever may be accurate, but it our opinions are
xolored by our experiences, those drivers that are nit bike riders truely don't
understand qhat we are doing there, they think we are crazy or whatever.
Thing is, both views are right. Part of the problem is that even though
bicycles are generally legal on most roads and you have the right to be there,
it's more than likely that the road was not designed with bicycles in mind
(obviously right?) So, one can kind of understand their frustration; I do my
best to stear clear of areas like this, but truth is you can't always and since
you can't you will have to make the best of the situation, I fear there is no
real solution short of rebuilding the roads to accommodate both and no doubt
that is not going to happen.
One final thought in this; sometimes we cyclists are our own worst enemies.
There is a traffic signal that I sit at several times a week it is a route that
is also popular with cyclists. On the other side on this intersection a bike
path starts, its 8+ feet wide & never busy, yet I can't count the number of
times I have been behind a cyclist who when the light changes continues on
using the street rather then the bike path! As a cyclist myself I am confounded
by this, because if I have a choice I will use the bike path every time & I can
only imagine how a driver who does not cycle would feel!?
Personally, if my local government puts in cycling infrastructure I make a
point to use it, this helps me, but also soothes the nerves of motorists.

I'm planning on being there Friday. Question for the OP: best late lunch
and beer joints near the convention center? Probably riding home to Rocklin
afterwards so can't imbibe too much, but would like to sample the suds and
grab a sammy somewhere. Seems like there are tons of choices down there
these days.

Also, for those attending...I saw on MTBR that in years past, the day-of
ticket line can be long, like an hour or more. Seems hard to believe, but I
never been. Up until COB Tuesday, I think you can buy them online:
https://nahbs.mycustomevent.com/ShoppingCart.aspx?com=detailview=1348=1351=260#Detail

Also, I'm assuming the have protected valet bike parking? Seems impossible
they would not...

OK, sorry for being indecisive, but I'm interested in the Tubus Tara if
it's still available. It would make it easy to add a pannier rack to my
bikes (well, much easier than mounting the Nitto Campee classic I have).

Shipping to 52404

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Tips for how to better handle Selfish Drivers?

2016-02-22 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Enlightenments and ascensions notwithstanding, I believe the OP referred to
"selfish" drivers. There was no mention of whether they were anatomically
correct. In any case, simply the act of driving several thousand pounds of
metal via fossil fuels is, by definition, supremely selfish. The behavior
once behind the wheel may add to that selfishness, or make one resemble a
bodily orifice, or what have you. But driving a car is a hugely selfish act
right from the get go, regardless of reason.

As to how to smooth out Close Encounters of the Unwanted Kind, generally
not going to happen; it's a dilemma, not a problem. George Carlin's line
could be adopted for the issue of Cars Behaving Badly Toward Bikes: *"Have
you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and
anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"*

My son is approaching my height (he'll turn 15 in May). This is a pleasant
surprise because his mom is not-tall. If he gets close enough to my

At temperatures that low, the pour point of the lubricant would start
to matter. Phil Tenacious Oil is probably molasses at -40. I can't find
detailed specs for Tri Flow, but the MSDS says its flash point is pretty
low (170 degrees), indicating a fair portion of it is pretty light oil so
it probably does flow at a low temperature. Sewing machine oils or
 3-in-One would perform similarly.

I'm not a huge fan of using motor oil outside of engines, but you could
go to a 0W-20 synthetic motor oil to get a very low pour point. Synthetic
oils have an inherently high viscosity index, which means they don't change
viscosity with temperature as much as mineral oils. That same property
would help maintain lubrication film strength when the weather warms up.

If you stick with Tri Flow, consider using it as a winter-only oil, and
relubricating with something a bit heavier for the warm months. No sense
wearing out an expensive hub prematurely.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tips for how to better handle Selfish Drivers?

2016-02-22 Thread Ryan Fleming
Well, a little common sense and courtesy from drivers and cyclists
(assholery is not just exclusive to car owners) would go a long way to
making things better. One thing I've sure noticed in the last dozen or so
years is that drivers are more distracted with their devices to the
extent that they're sort of oblivious to anything elseand I've seen
cyclists riding no hands and texting away, too. Don't want to get into a
rant about this, but it is scary how people are so hooked in to their
virtual worlds that they are totally unaware of what's going on around them
in the real world...

2016-02-22 Thread dougP
"For reference, the factory supplied Phil Wood pawl lube is a mix of
something around 9 parts tenacious oil to 1 part phil grease."'

Phil's Tenacious is quite thick even in moderate temps. No wonder it's
problematic under your temp conditions. Throw in some grease for
stickiness & voila, sticking pawls. I've used Phil's Tenacious in freehubs
& have one with over 50,000 miles on it that still works fine. I never
guessed one could last so long & just wondering how long it will go.

Good question! I did a quick Google and it seems they have their own

I've tried Phil pawl lube, tenacious oil, 10w40 motor oil, various
chain lubes, etc. Triflow is the only thing I've found to work
 consistently
below -10C. Even -5C was getting my 10w40 lube sticking a bit, which I
 found surprising.

Strangely enough, my older 3-pawl phil wood road hub has never skipped
in any temperatures, ever. But this new and 'improved' 4-pawl design Phil
came out with a year or two ago has been brutal. This is my third freehub
and my first time since getting the Atlantis that I've been able to ride
 in
 the cold without it skipping.

I got the minimal and ultra light lube idea from some riders up in
Alaska who used a few drops of Singer sewing machine oil. It's pretty
similar to TriFlow. TriFlow is supposed to be good to -60C. I've had the
'pleasure' of trying it down to -40C and it's been working well.

A friend of mine just bought a Rohloff, I'll ask him about its low temp
 performance.

[RBW] Re: Tips for how to better handle Selfish Drivers?

2016-02-22 Thread Brian Campbell
There is no solution. It is simply the counter balance to all of the joy a
bicycle can bring into your life. FWIW, I have been hit by cars, trucks and
other cyclists. Thankfully, never anything serious. I do my best to avoid
accidents and have adopted a "do not poke the bear" philosophy when
interacting with numbskulls.

I recently had a woman driving a Range Rover, almost squish me at a 4-way
stop. I was stopped as traffic proceeded through the stop in an orderly
manner. She was approaching from my right ( I was heading South she was
heading East). it was my turn and as I started to enter the intersection,
she went right through her stop sign, (no braking). I yelled out "Hey!"
and braked hard. She looked up from her phone, startled by my yelling and
then gave me the finger and shouted at me to go have relations with myself.

In another life, I would have chased her down to the next light and
continued the discussion. Now, I just do my best to let it go and continue
on my way. It does not feel fair to me but I have come to accept that there
are many aspects of life that are indeed, unfair.

[RBW] Re: Could the end be near? Spring and happy Phil pawls

2016-02-22 Thread Mark Reimer
Agreed re: TriFlow as a winter-only oil. It's been in there a couple weeks
now and the hub has never ran so nicely. I'll open it up later this week
and see how things are looking inside.

The 10w-40 oil was something I started using in the fall, so it was too
heavy even in near-freezing temperatures. Pretty surprising how sensitive
this freehub is to viscosity. A lower synthetic oil is a good idea though.

For reference, the factory supplied Phil Wood pawl lube is a mix of
something around 9 parts tenacious oil to 1 part phil grease.
