2016-03-21 Thread dstein
Nice! I rode all around Nashville on a single speed over the holidays
visiting (used to live there), it was a blast, now that I'm in california
where there are long hour + climbs, I'm more convinced a single speed in
nashville is totally fine. Maybe a little hillier outside of town closer to
the park? Also went mtn biking on an old Ritchey in Montgomery Bell park
while I was there too!

2016-03-21 Thread cyclotourist
Bruce, that's awesome! My neighbor did the Stagecoach as well... what an
amazing event! RSR isn't quite as intense... :-) His trick is to ride it
singlespeed! https://www.strava.com/activities/517113778

Richard, a CC or similar is about perfect for this ride. Although some of
the riders on CX bikes said they wish they brought their mountain bikes
instead!

There are enough riders out there at the multiple different paces, that
it's pretty easy to find someone to ride with, change up, slow down, stop
for a while, whatever. And from I saw, really good vibes all around! I
think having it as a "ride" vs a "race" is the ticket to making that
happen.

Mark your calendars for March 2017, the fourth edition!

Well, balls, that is a tough one. I can absolutely empathize with the

wishing for the Rewind button, for the myriad things I wish I could un-do.
Especially since it's on a friend's bike. I would probably curse a lot,

2016-03-21 Thread Joe Szokoli
Bill,

#1. Bolt was tight, but going in, not getting tougher as I went, as happens
if you have the wrong pitch, and then when almost home broke just below the
surface...

It's strange I chased the other three posts and they seemed rather clean.

I had made a little jig and got the hole drilled for the ez-out with a
left-handed drill beautifully centered. The ez-out had a good bite and I'm
turning little by little waiting for the screw to start turning and pop the
ez-out breaks absolutely flush with the surface of the bolt. I had chosen
the smaller of two ez-outs hoping that it would not cause the bolt to
further bind up. In hindsight with the pilot hole centered in the bolt i
should have keep using bigger drills till I was at the minor diameter of
the thread, and picked out the pieces.

There are just so many lessons here.

Re: [RBW] Re: Orange 58cm Rambouillets Is this a Mythical Beast?

2016-03-21 Thread NickBull
If you are replying to my post of the orange ram with blue-green stays ...

We discussed matching the headtube cream color, but Bilenky recommended
against it, I think because they said that it would tend to look dirty all
the time and also cream is so muted a color it would kind of wash out
visually.

So what they were matching was the green in the Rambouillet headtube badge.

FWIW, center of BB to top of top tube is a hair under 22.5" which is 57.2
cm. So I don't know what that means--the Rambouillet geometry table has 56
and 58. Maybe I'm not measuring quite right. Or maybe the 58 is to the
top of a virtual horizontal top tube, I think the Ram has a little bit of
upslope.

There are four different ways I've broken bolts in the past.

1. It's not threading in correctly, and I imagine that I'm using the bolt
to clean out the threads. I'm forcing it and it breaks off. I should have
tapped the threads first. This also happens when you cross thread, or use
the wrong threaded bolt for the hole.
2. It threads in correctly and but I get to the end of the threads and
it's almost there, but not quite tightened down on the assembly. I force
it and break it off. I should have just used a shorter bolt
3. It threads in correctly and bottoms out fine and I just overtighten
it. I shouldn't have been so strongarmed
4. It threads in fine and tightens down fine, but it breaks when I try to
loosen it. I should have greased the threads

Do you know which of these four you did? Or something else?

A little late now but if you ever need to get a broken screw out use a left
hand drill bit and drill it out. When the drill bites the counter clockwise
rotation will spin the screw out. I've used this method many times in the shop.

[RBW] Re: EDM / Tap Burner

2016-03-21 Thread R Michaels
You might take the bike to a machine shop and have them tack weld a piece
of metal to the broken bolt or ez-out so they can use it to unscrew the
bolt. I have had that done before and it works quite well. You wouldn't
think there is enough room to do that but a good welder can do amazing
things.

well this has succeeded in making me take another look the products. i saw
some in a store, several years ago, and was pretty turned off by the
awkward gusset, padding/double thick areas, and a few other details that i
thought defeated the purpose of a non-cycling cycling pant. from their
page, it looks like they have ditched those aspects in favor of a more
normal looking design, which is cool. i was gonna get some swrve pants, but
i might try these instead.

Not just a young hipster product, I assure you! I know a lot of guys in
their 50's and 60's here who love the jeans, and they're not all stick
figure physique either. They have a nice amount of stretch, re-enforced in
the saddle-area, and they wick away water nicely (that feature goes away
over time if you wash them a lot).

Wow - y'all got sharp eyes! I can't see it!

Ironic, in that Grant's "schtick" -- and this is not a value judgement;
it's simply an observation of a fact -- has always been to buck trends; a
"schtick" I find completely sympathetic. Perhaps then it's fitting that the
Atlantis has so fleeting an appearance, the ad being entirely "conformist"
in every way whatsoever that you analyze it (and the conforming culture has
produced some good things; hipster jeans are better for riding than boot
cuts).

Hah, I didn't notice that! Opening a real can of worms here lol.

The Levi's commuter line has been around for several years now. Probably
not ten years yet, but getting close. They finally expanded to include
women's clothing in the last year or two, and the line as a whole has
expanded quite a bit recently. Sounds like they're in it for a while at
least.
