I think Rivendell lugs are the prettiest on the planet.

Rivendell just makes the most beautiful looking bikes on earth.

[RBW] New Drivetrain Setup on the Hunqapillar

2016-04-25 Thread Bill Lindsay
Not a 100 percent tangent, but I bought a nice carbon mountain bike. I picked
the best frame with mediocre parts (deore 2x10). I just bought an XTR
drivetrain for it from chain reaction (also 2x10). I'm kind of toying with
putting this high end drivetrain on my Atlantis instead. Just for fun.

[RBW] Re: Boscoe and Rambouillet Pics Anyone?

2016-04-25 Thread Jeremy Till
Hey, that's me! I did have Bosco Bullmoose bars on my Quickbeam for about
a year, and yes, it did feel very short, although the setback seatpost
helped. They later got switched out for Albatrosses and eventually, Avenir
Circa handlebars.  The QB definitely has a comparatively short top tube;
even with the less swept-back Alba's and Circas, I still ride an 130mm
stem. I'm still constantly fiddling with that bike but this is pretty
close to the current setup:

https://flic.kr/p/Ett4rD

Around the same time I took the Bosco's off the Quickbeam I put a pair of
standard Aluminum Bosco's on my Surly LHT, which has a ~2cm longer top tube
than my QB (62 vs. 60, both are 64cm frames), and that felt great with a
stem in the 110-120mm range. I rode that setup all over for almost two
years, including touring from SF to LA. Here it is:

https://flic.kr/p/pgoF44

However, I just came in from the garage, where I was working on that bike's
latest transformation. Being the fickle guy that I am, it's getting drops
(shock! horror!), but only because I have a 59cm Clem frame also waiting in
the garage to get built up as a (slightly more offroady) upright
all-rounder, and the Trucker is morphing into more of a go-faster bike.

To me, still one of the prettiest lug design ever. It's fancy and playful,
yet tasteful.

As to timeline, all the early Rivendells used them. Mine was built in early
1999, and was one of the first to use different lugs, with a mix of windows
and curls.

the bars were released.

The Quickbeam is a contemporary-of and similar-to the Rambouillet, but it
IS ever-so-slightly longer - no matter what the charts indicate! Also
noteworthy, now that I see this again, that his saddle actually does sit
close to the top tube, almost like Joe described.

Do you have a budget in mind? Do you already have parts? A Piolet build
will not be cheaper than a Clem, especially with the pre-order right now,
unless you have parts to build up the Piolet.

I agree with what everyone else is leaning toward: ride what you got. Bring her
into the process. Does she want to change one component, such as cockpit (I
know, several components) pedals, saddle or tires? Indulge her.

I am always trying out new things and forcing my kids to get to the next level
of bike or ride something I think is better for them, so know I don't always
practice what I preach!

[RBW] Re: Cheap Clem substitutes?.

2016-04-25 Thread Bill Lindsay
My advice is that if your daughter wants to ride with you, and your
daughter has a bike, why not just ride with your daughter? Her current
bike sounds fine. If there is something that makes her current bike
insufficient to ride with her dad, take care of that, but until then, this
might be a just ride situation.

My 15 year son old said "Don't bother dad, mom's Yves Gomez fits me fine!
I'll just take her bike. When's the next campout?"

[RBW] Cheap Clem substitutes?.

2016-04-25 Thread Joe Bernard
You're reverse-engineering what Grant did by creating the Clem. He made a
semi-TIGed lower-cost Riv for people who've been scouring Craigslist for
late-'80s/early-'90s mtbs, then spending more than they expected to make them
into functional townies. There's still plenty of them out there, and I know
you're up to the refurbish task, but low bottom brackets are hard to find in
that type of bicycle.

Might be packing a little to much in the backpack don't you think Patrick?
I have an older early 90'S Cannondale Red Shred set up Nitto dirt Drop stem
and moustache bars, blackburn rear rack and upgraded wheels,rd and headset
I'd part with if you can't find what you're looking for. But then again
you're back to a mtb.

Re: [RBW] Executive Fatlantis riding, Albatross musings, Carradice front-mounting

2016-04-25 Thread Patrick Moore
It sounds like an idyllic day. I feel your pain about headwinds: today's
here in ABQ (spring windy season) has gusts to 40 mph -- and the wind
couldn't make up its mind about where to blow from. I was riding out nearby
bosque trail network on the Race Lite, and on the way home, yes I can tell
you, knobby tires *do* have more wind resistance!

Funny, my Rivs all seem to carry heavy rear loads quite well. Even my Dahon
handles 30 lb in the Hoss -- acceptably, if not exceptionally. Horses for
courses, I suppose.

[RBW] Cheap Clem substitutes?.

2016-04-25 Thread Patrick Moore
After typing that heading, I paused to ask myself if the question is kosher
for this list. But I think it is; it has to do with my desire to get a fat
tired bike with large bb drop for my daughter.

I can't afford a Clem, but I think the Clem would be ideal for her: pushing
15, very occasional rider who just the other day suggested that I take her
riding (tears to my eyes!); the landscape the bosque near my house which is
laced with nice trails, but with sandy soil; a bike that can accommodate 60
mm tires and ride decently on flat dirt but also on pavement.

If I do this right, daughter may in 10 years commission 6 Rivendell
customs, so who knows.

1990s mountain bikes are a possible -- she has a cheap very early aughts .

Diamond Back mtb -- but really, she will be more comfortable with a frame
with far more bb drop.

Build: sprung saddle; swept back bar; wide range 1Xn gearing.

Use: rides with Dad, riding to nearby school with 1000 lb backpack.

Ideas? Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Boscoe and Rambouillet Pics Anyone?

2016-04-25 Thread iamkeith
I'm thinking you want Albatross bars for this - not Bosco. Or maybe the
Choco?

I haven't tried the setup you're describing, but I have a 60cm Ram with
noodles, and a 59cm Clem with boscos. The Ram has a very short top tube,
even by Riv standards. Meanwhile, the Clem has an extremely long top tube
and was designed with Bosco bars in mind. And even so, I had to use the
longest Tallux stem I could get (130mm) before the boscos felt low enough
and far enough away on the Clem.

They're a great bar, with lots of comfortable grip positions when set up
well, but I think half of them would be useless on a Ram.

[RBW] Re: Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not

2016-04-25 Thread Evan E.
Drew:

The PolyWhey polyurethane takes just two hours to dry. But I let it dry
overnight: safe side.

Before my first ride, in a rainstorm, I had just one coat of urethane on my
Riv-content Newbwaum's bar tape (no padding). The tape and the finish held
up fine. Before my next ride, I added another coat for extra protection.
Then it rained again. Maybe I should add a third coat. We're still in a
drought. :)

[RBW] Re: Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not

2016-04-25 Thread Brian Campbell
I too like just one layer of cotton tape. I put some shellac on to keep it
from getting too dirty. You can also do 2 layers of cotton tape to get a
bit more of a "cush" factor. Just remember if you go that route, that the
first layer should not be wrapped in an overlapping fashion. I just wrap it
so the edges touch. This keeps the tape from looking uneven and possibly
too bulky when the second layer goes on.

I don't know what it is about curved top tubes, seat stays and that bubba

[RBW] Re: Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not

2016-04-25 Thread masmojo
If you are going to put shellac or urethane, a lot of padding won't work
anywayz; the tape will be squishy & the shellac will crack. I have some scraps
of a rubbery tape(neoprene ?) I used several years ago (on something ?), I Cut
a strip of it and stick it to the bar lengthwise where my hand will rest. I
wrap the cotton tape fairly tight, this compresses it some so it's not squishy
at all but does dampen road vibration slightly. Works for me!

Funny you should mention Rock Lobster. There's yet another Paul Sadoff
creation that I've been admiring for quite a long while, and that has had
me seriously considering as a template for a custom. This one was made as
a mechanic's runabout for the team he sponsors. Ironically, it has a
lugged crown and a kind of precursor to the Choco bar... and, of course, a
bubba tube. Not for everybody (I hope), but it explains why I'm personally
so interested in the RB project.

[RBW] Re: Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not

2016-04-25 Thread drew
im really interested in the poly option. i love the look and durability
shellac, but im not a fan of the hard crust, and slippery feel in rain.
how long does that polyurethane to dry and how many coats do you need to do?

also, as a person who recently moved back to drop bars, i was afraid of
going just cotton tape. i thought for sure that i would need some
additional padding, since i like a little cork on my albastache. i didn't.
at the right height, my hands dont get worn out at all on the noodles.
it's sort of counterintuitive to find myself wanting padding more on
albatross or albastache bars than on drops, especially when they are all
about saddle height.

[RBW] Re: Executive Fatlantis riding, Albatross musings, Carradice front-mounting

2016-04-25 Thread Mark Reimer
Kieran, the bag is only attached on the bars and the tombstone. I used a
longer strap on the tombstone that intertwines with the rack, preventing it
from lifting off the tombstone if I hit a big bump. That really helped
stabilize the bag overall.

Because the bar height is almost the exact height of the bag, I don't need
anything on the bottom to prevent it from sagging. There really isn't a way
to sag, given it's bar mounting up top. In fact, most of the weight in the
bag here is in the side pockets, but you can see it isn't sagging at all.

[RBW] Re: Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not

2016-04-25 Thread Evan E.
Frank,

To further muddy the waters, I suggest you consider polyurethane instead of
shellac.

I like shellac, but a few weeks ago when I was running low on shellac, I
recalled that a list member recommended polyurethane because it's more
durable. And I had a can handy, so. Here it is. It's "green" and it does
not smell of solvent:

http://www.vermontnaturalcoatings.com/our-products/polywhey-natural-furniture-finish/

I used the satin finish. It's not slick or glossy. And it permits you to
still feel some texture of the cotton.

Since I applied the PolyWhey finish, I've ridden twice on long rides (~ 40
miles) in pouring rain. The tape has held up well. Just an option for you!

Evan

Re: [RBW] Re: Getting the message out.

2016-04-25 Thread masmojo
Regarding the shower, it's a nice luxury, but not a deal killer for me. I
commuted by bike for many years in Texas (Austin, Houston, Dallas) when I did
not have a car or even when I did. I agree that a good plan is to be able to
arrive early & give yourself time to cool down. Speaking for myself without
this cool down period a shower is almost pointless, my heart rate stays
elevated for another 15 or 20 minutes, so if I jump in the shower it does no
good, because I will continue to sweat afterwards. I just try to cool down, a
big fan or air vent is handy, towel off and fresh clothes.
BO? Well it can be a problem, but it depends a little on your job, if you work
sales @ Brooks Bothers then maybe bike commuting for more than a short distance
is not a good choice. I work in office cube land on a computer/phone so if I
don't smell like a daisy it's ok as long as I don't reek! Generally, the
bacteria that causes odor takes many hours to start getting stinky, but beware
of your chair, because if you are sweaty & sit in it all day it can get bad
Also, I believe that many toxins and impurities are exhausted through sweat &
the pores that is why a towel is so important! Good news is that riding
frequently tends to help minimize this problem.
I find that if you leave early morning, even here in Texas you can minimize
getting too hot or sweaty and also there's less traffic to deal with. I get to
work early and leave early, many times taking a more scenic route home and not
worrying about getting sweaty or whatever, because I can cool down, relax &
shower at home.
You experience may differ! ;-)

Re: [RBW] Re: Getting the message out.

2016-04-25 Thread BenG
I share a locker room with bradley (round) sinks and a floor fan, no showers.
Muggy mornings arrive early, take off sweaty cotton, put on dry merino and
cotton, then douse head in sink, towel off. That slows the sweat. Factory temp
is 90+ when outside is 90+, so not the last sweat I see that day, but at least
I am in the shade. I am hotter working than riding, for sure.

I've been using the longflap on my Pass & Stow rack as the Clem makes it
difficult to use my rear rack and a saddlebag. Saddlestraps attach really
nicely on Bullmoose bars and the seatpost strap goes around the rear rail.
Works pretty solidly with the main downside being the straps must be
buckled otherwise the flap flies open. Kinda limits accessibility some

[RBW] Richard Sachs on the original Riv lugs

2016-04-25 Thread Jeremy Till
Richard Sachs posted a short little description today of how the original
Rivendell lugs came into being. Turns out Grant commissioned them while he
was still at Bridgestone, but Bridgestone USA closed before they were used:

http://www.richardsachs.com/site/2016/04/25/the-linger-commission/

Also a cool photo of the prototype HT/DT lug. Supposedly the protos were
hand carved from french blanks (thus would need metric tubing) and have
extremely wonky angles, so according to RS they can't really be used to
make a bike. All the same, I wonder what such a bike would look like!

[RBW] Re: Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not

2016-04-25 Thread Frank Conway
Thanks for all your inputs. Now I'm leaning towards just cotton/shellac, but
I'll probably change my mind three times by the time I order the stuff. As
Deacon Patrick said, you just need to try something and see what you like.
Thanks again for your advice and knowledge.
