Re: [RBW] Re: OT: carrying fishing poles on a bike

2016-04-30 Thread Ron Mc
Another thought for a 2-pc spinning rod is a frame bag - might talk to a
bag maker like Randi Jo or Ely at Ruthworks.
What I was thinking was a bag attached to the top tube that zips open a
flap - maybe straps inside to secure the rod with the reel wrapped, then it
zips around the reel with the bulk of the rod cantilevered over the rear
wheel.
Maybe come up with a way to strap a scabbard case like this along the top
tube with the narrow end cantilevered behind the seat:

Baskets are great for waders and boots, too. If it's not raining they dry

leave anything grab-able on the bike.

2016-04-30 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Erl,
I fish out of bags, Brady and Chapman. You wear these like a musette, but
especially loaded for fishing, it's a lot easier to stuff them and your
wading shoes in a pannier. This is a Carsick pannier, with water bottle
sleeves on each end - they fit a fly rod tube perfectly.

I also have a 6-pc Japanese rod that doesn't even need the toe strap
support - the rod tube is 17"

Texas has a ruled about river bottoms - if it's classified "navigable"
water you can get in at bridges and wade. The best fishing is the
headwaters, which aren't navigable, and the lanowners own the river bottom.

They flip if you park a car at the crossing, but don't seem to mind bikes
at all. Even one county with no parking ordinance on river-following
county roads, I was locking my bike to a tree when the sheriff drove by and
waved at me.

I've carried fly rods in their (inner tube-wrapped) aluminum tube using a
PVC endcap at bottom and toe strap at the rear rack. This setup has worked
great even on singletrack (with a 4-piece rod). You can get the idea from

[RBW] Always heard this about latex tubes

2016-04-30 Thread Ron Mc
Something to say about soft tires and low pressures. I rode 40 miles today
on The Italian Huffy, with the 38mm Compass Barlow Pass. I picked up a
thumbtack in my front tire (40 psi) and heard it going around 1xR. I
stopped - it wasn't completely planted, but it was deep. I was spooked
pulling it out expecting to hear the air come with it. But it didn't
puncture the latex tube. I've always read that latex would stretch around
sharp objects without puncturing. I made it home, and it's still holding
pressure tonight.

(Might not have been so kind on the 60psi rear with more of my weight).

Re: [RBW] Talk to me about bottom brackets

2016-04-30 Thread Patrick Moore
With modern, 2-piece cranksets with 1 arm attached to the spindle, the
spindle length is a given for the crank model, and crank models generally
work only within rather strict limits, that is, for certain types of frames
and rear hubs. For the older type of 3 piece square taper cranksets, with
arms both separate from the spindle, mfs recommend a spindle length for a
given rear hub width, sometimes modified by the width of the chainstays
where the are crossed by the rotating arms. But if you want to mix and
match, say, to use an old Deore triple on a 5 speed or, at the other
extreme, a 10 speed rear road bike, you'll need to experiment or ask
someone who has combined the 2 and knows the chainline wrt to the width of
the rear hub.

The situation can also be complicated by how you want to center your chain,
and whether you value chainline over minimum Q. I've used a 108 mm spindle
and a 145 mm spindle on almost identical frames, the choice determined by
chainline option, Q or "tread" or width between the outside faces of the
crank arms at pedal interfaces, gearing choices, rear hub width, and of
course the crank arm flare.

Patrick "learned the hard way that flared crank designs used different
spindle lengths than straight ones" Moore

2016-04-30 Thread Patrick Moore
The DB was a low end aluminum framed, cheap susp fork model that retailed
IIRC for $400 when it first came out -- late '90s or early '00s? It has
plastic twist grip shifters pulling a stamped steel, riveted no-model-name
Shimano rd over a 7 sp freewheel. Very definitely a cut below even the
middish level MB-3.

The almost 27" tall Maxxis Ikons fit on the Bridgestone, but not under the
front fender at the fork; I'll have to hack it there.

The MB-3's bb is 1/2"/almost 13 mm lower than that of the Race Lite, so
I'll keep the MB 3 and sell the RL frame, Bomber fork, bb, King headset,
and CF Bontrager crankset with external bearing bb. I will probably regear
to a 2X9 or even a 1X9 -- Catie won't be grinding up any steep hills; so
I'll need either a 38 t or a 34 t middle ring. The inner is 24 (outer is
48).

[RBW] Bike for Catie/Clem substitute: Bridgestone CB3

2016-04-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Again, thanks for all the suggestions and offers. This morning, a bit of
serendipity: someone was selling a CB3 at Stevie's, obviously upgraded with
old DX drivetrain and Sun Mistral/Mavic 7 sp freewheel wheelset. complete
with full fenders and Blackburn rear rack: $220.

I think -- subject to change -- I'll transfer over the wheelset and
brake/shift levers from the Race Lite and sell the remainders from both
bikes.

Anyway, pretty good deal.

The other bit of serendipity was finding a lightly used lower end but still
made in USA Martin, with very good case, for Catie at $429.

Build report and photos forthcoming. Catie, needless to say, is much more
interested in the guitar than in the bike, but I think she'll like the
tubeless Maxxis Ikons.

[RBW] Re: lowering a handlebar bag

2016-04-30 Thread Dave Johnston

I've done something similar with zip ties and a cheap plastic lunch cooler
from walmart. The one I have has a full plastic tub inside for extra
rigidity or ice. I have a clear pencil case sewn and velcro'd to the top
for a map case as well (not shown) - zipper is too hard to use while
ridding, but total project cost under $10

Re: [RBW] Re: Sin urrr gi Rims

2016-04-30 Thread Michael Hechmer
I think I may have gotten to success. I stopped by my favorite
mechanic and chatted about it. He immediately knew what the problem was
and said it has become common place with rims designed for tubeless tires.
Standard clinchers slip too low at the bottom. He suggested, after making
sure the tube wasn't pinched, spray the tires with soapy water and blowup
the tire to its maximum pressure. I have done this and it looks very good.
I'm letting the tires sit at 75-80 lbs for a while before letting half the
air out and test riding.

[RBW] Re: lowering a handlebar bag

2016-04-30 Thread Michael Hechmer
Interesting. I too have an Arkel bag which we tried on three different
bikes, always with negative results. I considered trying to mount it
lower, to a rack. The zip ties don't excite me though as I often want to
take the bag off to see / work on the front brakes or tighten something up.
I wonder if some hook & loop could be attached, along with straps to the
HBs?

[RBW] Re: Cheap Clem substitutes?.

2016-04-30 Thread Dave Johnston
I would think a used Long Haul Trucker would be ideal.

I would avoid a cruiser type frame. I have one and its just a dog to ride.
I love biking and it makes me hate biking more than 5mi on a boardwalk.

These Vitus city bikes look pretty cool, some like the Dee 29 come stock
with 29x2.1 tires. Most US city bikes are 700x35 with not much room for
more. Disc brakes allow a smaller wheel for lower BB if required. The link
below is a UK retailer. Not sure about US distributors or UK to US shipping
fees.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sin urrr gi Rims

2016-04-30 Thread Michael Hechmer
These are not brand new tires or wheels. I bought them with a new set of
wheels, if memory is good, a few years ago from someone on this list
(perhaps the guy who owns a shop in Minneapolis?) and they arrived with
pari moto tires. All was good. Last year, I decided to replace the Natty
Bumps on Pat's Betty because they really crowded the fenders and so bought
two new pari-motos, putting the new ones on the front of each bike. No
problem getting the tires on the rims at all, but when I took the bike out
on the road I got a vibration above 25mph. Investigation and some help
from here turned up the nature of the diving issue. I worked & worked at
it and got it fixed. This Spring I replaced the tube to fix a slow leak
problem and was very careful remounting the tire. I thought I was good
enough, but when I went out on the road, got the same front end noise.
I've redone the job but haven't had time to road test them. I'm feeling
pretty frustrated.
