I emailed seller to decline the thoughtful offer of refund, and thank him
here publicly all the same, but for the record:

Lest anyone think I am blaming him for misrepresentation, FAR BE IT.

I saw the pics, I had a pretty good idea what I was in for, and I had
plenty of opportunity to ask questions, which I did not.

Somebody buy them for $25.00 shipped and all is right in the world. The
Velo Orange version is $68.00 new,. You find or make shims, you're in
business.

They are IRD/Soma mounts, not Paul. The clamp is 25.4/26.0, so you'll need
shims to make them work with a 22.2 grip area.

The hardware included is the two bolts to tighten the clamps, the two DT
style bosses for the shifters, and one M5 bolt with a wide, slotted head,
presumably but not definitely to secure one of the two shifters that came
with the mounts. Dunno, but the bosses are M5, too.

Barrel adjusters are chrome finish, not plastic a la Paul. They are used
but not abused, perfectly serviceable if you can make all of the above go
your way.

Looking good! The extender thingy is called a Goatlink, made by Wolftooth.
It's supposed to help with cassette life and smoother shifting, even if you

[RBW] Re: Gearing for my Riv Roads

2016-05-04 Thread Patrick Moore
One more question. After a lister described his ss-to-derailleur hack, I'm
interested in this option too.

I've got a clamp/bolt on hangar and can easily find a medium cage rd. I'd
need a second rear wheel built up like, say, this (24.75" wheel):

48
14 85
16 74
17 70
18 66
20 59
23 52
28 42
Versus the AM

69-59-51.

Of course, you'd need to splice in an additional length of chain, but this
can be easily done with masterlinks.

Choices, choices ...

[RBW] Gearing for my Riv Roads

2016-05-04 Thread Patrick Moore
What do you who have used hub gears suggest?

For the '03 Curt, my errand bike, with a 70" fixed cruising gear: a 1956 FM
hub, with gears of .8654, 1.0, 1.1555. This hub has a freewheel.

I think that gearing the direct drive middle gear to 59" (48X20, 24.75"
wheel), with a 69" top and a 51" low is best for this hub. Opinions?

For the '99 Joe gofast, with a 76" fixed cruising gear, I recently found a
second-edition 32 hole S3X: direct, .75, .625.

I think that rather than overgearing it, I'll use top/direct as a cruising
gear, again 46X15 for 76", and have 57" and a 48 in climbing gears.

One could use an "overdrive" gear on a fixed gear hub for downhills, but I
think I'd prefer to save direct/high for cruising.

The '03 is used for around town. The '99 would be used for longer rides.

Opinions?

I like Bill's and Deacon's notion of "pay it forward in goods to the

Suggestion: Perhaps when we post each free/pay-it-forward item, we could
use a fixed category title, such as "Pay It Forward: Sugino 46T Chainring."
With such a fixed and specific title, the subject and category and item
will be instantly understood. Good for skimming.

Re: [RBW] Re: 1X10: How clean it is!

2016-05-04 Thread dstein
Just got finished setting up my Hunqapillar for 1x10 with a White
Industries Eno 42t,11-42 sunrace cassette, and my existing 9 speed dura ace
shifters (friction). Should give a 26-99" gear inch range. Haven't really
ridden outside of a short neighborhood jaunt, but so far so good. A few
build notes and issues:

1. I used the existing bottom bracket (I recently started a bottom bracket
thread). White ind. calls for 113mm, Riv said it was likely there was a 107
or 110 in there. Tried it out and got enough clearance so kept it.
Chainline isn't quite centered for the middle of the rear cassette, a tad
off.
2. There wasn't quite enough clearance for the Shimano XT Shadow Plus
RD-M786 dearilleur so I had the LBS add an extender thingy (there was a
proper name for this but i'm not sure what it was)
3. we needed more clearance on the bar end pod to shift (more in the up
position) so the LBS cut away at it a little bit
4. Hank and Frank's on College Ave in Oakland is awesome. There's a guy
Benji there that has been helping me with my half baked projects with parts
scoured from all over the web. I never get any flak. They're quick (same
day or next in most scenarios), and cheap (i owe them some beers or tips or
something). I feel like most other bike shops are judgemental of my dubious
home mechanic skills, weird bikes and parts, and they also always seem to
have a week or two long wait. Just a shout out.

After all that seems to be running great.

Re: [RBW] Getting a bike brake light.

2016-05-04 Thread Eric Norris
I have that light, and I set up a video camera and shot video of myself riding
away from the camera and stopping. The light flashes brightly several times
when your speed drops (it's probably measuring a decrease in voltage as the
bike slows down). It seemed pretty attention-getting to me.

No ...I wouldn't describe it as a touring bike either , but I suppose you
could if you wanted to. The Riv A/R or the Atlantis which the X0-1 sort of
evolved into are much better choices

It was cool to see those pictures though...it is a unique bike, that's for

[RBW] Shout out to Riv/Grant in today's Paul Component newsletter

2016-05-04 Thread iamkeith
I hadn't realized that the Paul Racer was actually created because of a
request from Grant. Below is content (hope it views properly). Includes a
link to a related video for project inspiration.

The Racer Brake
Making the Classics Even Classier

We’re a bike component company for people with tricks up their sleeves.

You’ve got plans for those old frames lying around...you just don’t know
what they are yet.

Back in March we had an upcycle idea for your old mountain bike
,

and now we’ve another suggestion for converting that old steel classic or
27-inch wheel bike to a 700c: *It’s called the Racer Brake
.
 *

Or what’s known as a long-reach brake with a reach of 57 to 70mm.

Back in the day, Grant Peterson of Rivendell fame called Paul requesting a
centerpull brake like the Mafac Racer. Which sounded crazy But when Paul
pulled down some old frames and got to thinking, he could see it’d be great
for conversion.

What's so special about a Mafac replica? The arms are much stiffer than
your typical dual pivot brake, which means more power is transferred for
stopping.

Below is our video how-to on the conversion, and it’s housed on our BRAND
NEW VIDEO PAGE
,

where all of our videos can be found.

Note that the Racer is available in recessed and non-recessed mounting in
black, silver, and high polish. (Sorry folks, no green).

[RBW] Fargo for sale

2016-05-04 Thread Patrick Shea
Greetings:

I put this up on Craigslist, maybe there is interest here.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/5569522411.html

Not mentioned are the VO fenders and rear rack plus I will throw in the
Axiom panniers gratis. Everything works great, no clanks or clunks.

Rivsters can have it for $800 plus shipping.

Bay Area Rivsters can pick it up at my shed in SF or any BART stop for $750.

Cheers,
Patrick Shea

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam rebuild for light-loaded road touring: your thoughts, experiences & assitance?

2016-05-04 Thread JohnS
Second on recommending Phil Wood hub with Allen wrench bolts. My QB came
with a custom built wheel set with the Phil hubs which I paid a premium
for, but I love them. They work great, well worth the extra cost. Very easy
to work with and won't move once tightened.

I have VO rando bars on my QB and mustache bars on my Salsa Casseroll, both
bikes are fixed. I don't think I would recommend the mustache bars for
touring. There seems to be fewer hand positions compared to a drop bar. I
really miss the hand position next to the stem on the mustache bar, but
love the out of the saddle, standing position with them, very open feeling.
When riding the QB, I find that I use the drop flats and lower curve when
climbing, seems to provide extra torque at low cadence.

Good luck with your touring adventures,
JohnS

"No, but I know exactly where I am" Heisenberg replies.

The cop says "You were doing 55 in a 35." Heisenberg throws up his hands

He checks it out and says "Do you know you have a dead cat back here?"

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam rebuild for light-loaded road touring: your thoughts, experiences & assitance?

"Bottom bracket length- the track crank had affixed itself to a stubby

spindle length off the top of their heads?"

The bottom bracket length you need depends on your crankset. Knowing the
'stock size' is only useful if you are going to use the stock crankset.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam rebuild for light-loaded road touring: your thoughts, experiences & assitance?

2016-05-04 Thread Minh
mine is setup for this (though i use mine for errands), personally i rarely
switch at the cranks so that depends on your own riding style. i'm more of
freewheel as opposed to fixed so i use the WI duo-fw.

i do have bolt-on hubs and the only issue is to make sure you have the
keys to loosen/tighten the wheel on the bike. i've had 1-2 occassions that
i went out for a ride, forgot my toolkit and had the rear wheel come loose.
it's not a big deal if you're on the trail because you can flag down
someone and borrow their multi-tool but just one thing to keep track of.

the only other decision i think you need to think about is tires, not sure
why but i feel like i can't get anything bigger than around a 40mm tire,
but i've seen a few pictures of someone that got a 50mm in there!

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam rebuild for light-loaded road touring: your thoughts, experiences & assitance?

2016-05-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
I forgot to respond to your axel and gearing questions.

-- 32/40 is what mine is, standard with the final silver run.
-- I run WI's 16/19 duo FW and love it. I only use the 32/19 (uphill) and
16/40 combos. I have a 22t on the flip/flop as my mountainous bail out gear
or for when I aim up Pikes Peak.
-- I have a Phil Wood track hub and it is allen wrench not QR, and I have
no issues with it. Because of where I live, I'm shifting at least once on
nearly every route I ride (sometimes 3-4 or more shifts).
-- Gearing works brilliantly. I've done up to 90+ miles on all country dirt
roads with fairly extensive climbing and not touched the 22t flip-flop. But
that is with maybe 15 pounds of day gear/water, so a lightish load vs.
touring.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam rebuild for light-loaded road touring: your thoughts, experiences & assitance?

2016-05-04 Thread Pondero
Even though I've done fully loaded touring with my Quickbeam (in
three-speed mode), I normally have it set-up fixed with a mid-60s gear.
Most often it has a Carradice saddlebag, and a front bar-tube bag. My
outings include carrying food, spare clothes, coffee brewing gear, camera,
etc. That is my normal day trip loading. I like the Quickbeam set-up that
way. I agree with Patrick. The Barlow Pass ELs are mighty sweet on that
bike, and mine has seen a fair amount of gravel road applications with
delightful results. In summary, if you enjoy the Quickbeam, I think you'll
be successful in finding (perhaps through some experimentation) a fantastic
light touring configuration. I've contemplated many times taking mine out
on a fixed mini-tour. That would be fantastic.

[RBW] More, or less lights/reflectivity better?

2016-05-04 Thread Lungimsam
I read a BQ article that discussed the uncertainty of using more or less
lighting and reflectivity while bike riding in order to be safer and more
easily seen on the road.
At first thought, more would make sense being safer, but the article talked
about more, or the type of lighting/reflectivity contributing to target
fixation.
Also mentioned "visual clutter", as well as daytime/nighttime playing a
role in what could be used for maximum visibility.

Very interesting, but frustrating, as there is no exact evidence yet that
shows more or less or what type is better.

[RBW] Getting a bike brake light.

2016-05-04 Thread Lungimsam
Sigma makes one that lights up when you hit the rear brake. I wonder if drivers
and cyclists will understand that it is a brake light and indicates that the
cyclist is braking. I'd think it good to still call out and hand signal until
bike brake lights become ubiquitous, if they eventually do.

I remember once taking the lane and having to ride the brake and thinking that
the driver behind me had no way of knowing I'm slowing other than depth
perception and that a brake light woukd be useful. Not that that situation
happens much at all.

It attaches to the brake cable just above the sidepull calipers and wedges up
against the adjuster barrel. When you hit the brake it raises the cable,
causing the light unit to hit against the barrel, bending the light casing at a
hinge and turning on the light until you release the brake.
Something like that.

Of course, I use a front bag so no cover up from rear rack or bag. I already
have a rear light but thought Id put another light on.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam rebuild for light-loaded road touring: your thoughts, experiences & assitance?

2016-05-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Are a city build and country road build mutually exclusive? Do it right,
and there is a LOT of overlap. Both my bikes are country road builds (with
my Hunq centered more on single track and rough touring, my QB focused on
country road day riding). I've been unfortunate enough to ride both in the
city and they both do brilliantly. Plush, supple tires go a long way to
making this possible. 2.1 Thunder Burts on the Hunq, Barlow Pass ELs on the
QB.

[RBW] Quickbeam rebuild for light-loaded road touring: your thoughts, experiences & assitance?

2016-05-04 Thread ant ritchey
Hey folks-

Trying to restore my QB back to a semi-stock state. Bought mine with a
track crank & sturmey 5 spd set up. Got rid of both. I've got a nice
suntour triple and flip flop wheel waiting patiently to be rebuilt into my
beautiful orange 64cm machine. Here's where your thoughts and experiences
come in-

Bottom bracket length- the track crank had affixed itself to a stubby
little number, doubt it's gonna work with a double. Anyone know the stock
spindle length off the top of their heads?
Chain ring sizes- came with a 40/32, correct?
Flip flop gearing- stock were 16 & 18t freewheels?
Quick release rear wheel, yes? Would bolt-on be too much of a pain in the
behind? (I'm guessing I'm going to swap out the axle hardware for a QR set
up...)
Racks/luggage- most likely going to use m32 & r14. Anyone have a
bulletproof SS touring rack and or bag combo they'd recommend?
Stock gearing & touring/climbing- I know there are a buncha folks out there
who've ridden the QB quite a ways. How did the 40/32 & 16/18 set up pan
out?
Bar/stem- Noodles & Tech Dlx stock? I'll probably stick to this set up.
Although I'm curious if a mustache bar would give me greater hand-grip
power on the out-of-saddle climbing stretches...

As the post says- I'd like to initially set up for light/moderate loads
(basket & saddlebag) for touring >75% paved roads, coast range road riding
& climbing. The QB is one of the most comfortable rides I've ever owned
and due to its simple nature, ends up being my city ride more often than
not. Therefore shying away from setting it up for gravel, dirt & other
surfaces I tend to tour on.

That's all I can think of for now. Thanks in advance to all who share
their advice.

Best,
Ant / PDX

three-day ride down the California Coast, from Millbrae to Santa Barbara. I’ve

The weather cooperated … mostly. Temperatures were great, there was hardly a

[RBW] Re: How to make donation to RBW

2016-05-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
This is how I saw it. There is beauty in the economy of community! And
there is no reason to make it an immediate thing. If I give a part to Bill
and Bill doesn't have anything in his "still good but I don't use it" pile,
he will someday. No need to raid the cookie jar, or pass on something he
needs. He'll participate rightly when the time comes, and likely with added
generosity.

I've experienced this happening in the group in quiet ways for the several
years I've been here. I'd like to think I've lived up to my end.

By the way, anyone hear from Jim our fearless leader recently? He's been
quiet. You OK, Jim?

[RBW] Re: Bridgestone X0-1 on the Radavist

2016-05-04 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wow. Nice looking machine. These days I can't really imagine running a
52/38 on anything other than a thoroughbred racing machine (and even there,
I go compact.) Also, the white tires look, as my 6-year-old is fond of
saying lately, "FAN-see PAhnts!" But according to some, the lack of carbon
in the white rubber compound makes for less cornering adhesion, especially
in wet conditions. In terms of colors, I only have experience with Soma
Terra Cotta tires and have not noticed any real difference, but I tend to
be conservative when cornering in wet conditions at this point in my life.

But what a score. I am currently in the midst of converting a 1992 Trek 750
Multitrack to 26" wheels, which should give me a similar machine to an
XO/Atlantis, with more clearance for fenders. Now I am tempted to strip it
and paint it xo orange. Or maybe pink. Perhaps luckily, I don't have the
budget, so it will likely remain Model T Black.

[RBW] Re: Mini Front Racks and Canti Brakes

2016-05-04 Thread Ginz
I, too, have a 48cm Hunqapillar with CX70 Cantis and the Nitto Mini. Now,
on my fork, I have to use the Tektro Fork-Crown mounted cable stop to
prevent chatter and moaning. I tried a million different setups -- v
brakes, pads, etc. Nothing else stopped the noise. I have a dia-comp
straddle carrier positioned just above the rack post and just below the
Tektro hanger.

It's a tight fit but works fine. Not perfection, but fine, and I'm picky.

[RBW] My 1x8 Clem

2016-05-04 Thread KevinS
Your Clem looks great Bob. I'm a huge fan of my Clem as well. I've made a few
changes from the stock build and will have it complete in the next week. I will
post pics to the forum soon.
I'm currently looking for panniers and thought yours looked perfect ! Are they
the "Smoke Gray"? The color looks great with the Grey Clem. Thank you.
