My Bleriot seems to take front loads just fine.

But I am interested in a lighter tubing frame for my next bike.

So that means Roadeo or Low trail skinny tubed Boulder. Anyone want to trade
their Roadeo for my Blue Hillborne?... didn't think so...ok.

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-15 Thread dstein
I have a hunqapillar and recently built up an ocean air rambler. I'm still
playing with the bar height/stem length/seat height/seat setback combo for
the rambler and I haven't been on a long ride yet so hard to draw any
definitive conclusions. For context, I don't do rando rides, but I do ride
with a wald basket and sackville shopsack up front with anything from 2-15
lbs in it. I never felt like the handling was off or needed to feel any
different on the hunqapillar. I bought the rambler for other reasons. But
that being said, I'm also undecided on how I like the handling of the
rambler vs. the hunqapillar. It feels twitchier to me, with or without a
load, the hunqapillar feels more stable, but maybe some of that is
attributed to dialing in some other things I mentioned. But as others have
said, once you're out riding for a bit you kinda don't really notice any
more. I really question the low trail thing for front loads because I
haven't met a Rivendell that can't handle the front load (and I've owned
and ridden a SH, QB, and Cheviot).

[RBW] Re: Suspension Losses - Now Confirmed by Other Research

2016-06-15 Thread Jan Heine
You are right, there are many potential variables. We are lucky to have two
riders who weight the same, have the same height and the same power output:
Mark and me. So if we ride next to each other on identical bikes, we ride
at exactly the same speed. If the bikes are different, and one is faster,
then we switch bikes. If the same bike still is faster, then it's faster.
If the other bike now is faster, then one of us is having a bad day.

This technique factors in wind, temperature, fatigue, etc., since it's the
same for both bikes and riders. More on the Rando bike vs. Ti study is here:

Re: [RBW] At least I'm consistant

2016-06-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm always tempted to toss my iPhone, but it does serve a bicycling (and
thus On Topic) purpose: it's my ride computer for all my bikes. It also
replaces watch, tablet, alarm clock, maps, Daytimer, compass, thermometer,
shopping lists, and of course serves as the phone needed when you have a
child traveling between 2 households. Oh, and I have learned that I hate
texting, even though it seems that this is the default method of
communication used by anyone under 30. (Texting does keep me in somewhat
closer touch with my daughter, but I hate typing on a tiny virtual screen,
and dammit I'm not going to use those stupid abbreviations. Also, no way to
siri, effing mechanical robot voice!)

But honestly, I'll dump mine as soon as everyone else dumps his.

[RBW] Re: FS: Nitto, Sugino, Shimano, Tektro, etc.

2016-06-15 Thread kielsun
Another update here. A few things have been re-homed. I'm going to hang on
to the dirt drop stem for now while I sort out my never-ending mountain
bike build saga. Sorry to the interested parties for the runaround.

I'm still seeking trades for: Nitto Technomic stem (80-100 mm reach),
V-brakes (black/grey preferably), Albatross bar, Ergon grips.

Rivstuffs:

   - Nitto Moustache Bar (pictured)--$25 *plus* actual shipping: CroMo.
This was on my Sam for years. Some scrapes visible at clamp area.
   - Shimano Tiagra Road Levers--$25 shipped: Fine used shape.

Non-Rivstuffs:

   - Tektro CR720 Canti Brakes--$40 shipped: These are *black*. Rear are
new, front installed and used briefly. Trade straight-up for new/near new
   v-brakes?
   - Sugino RD2 Double Crankset 53/39--$50 shipped. Some wear. Arms are
   mostly free of scratches.
   - Ritchey WCS threadless stem--?$?: I have no idea what this thing is
worth. Maybe you do? Make me an offer.

Thanks!

Bob

I love my big-screen smartypants phone. I'm a bit of a loner-type, and the

[RBW] FS: 65 A. HOMER HILSEN; single top tube, Waterford built.

2016-06-15 Thread ant ritchey
grow the herd, thin the herd, repeat.

bought this and a 62 Hunq from a list member right around the same time a
year and a half ago. i was working a ton & going through a break up. too
much money to throw around, too little time spent riding & just too much
overlap between the stablemates, as can often-times be the case. ended up
taking the trusty Atlantis out again & again, on trip after trip...and the
Hilsen (along with the soon to be sold off Hunqapillar) just stayed put at
home. a shame, i know. so now i let go.

a link to my CL posting here in Portland, Oregon:

BIG HOMER aka the

hit me up off list if you've got any questions. i've got packing &
shipping materials ready to go. buyer pays shipping. never done the
bikeflights thing before but i'm all for making it as affordable as
possible to send the big beast off to a new home.

as is regularly the case- i learn a thing or two from the RBW owners group

2016-06-15 Thread Lungimsam
Nice ride report!! Great pics!! Thanks for sharing.

Sounds like you hit just about all types of road riding terrain on the
trip. Downhills, long climbs, flats, etc. I am guessing that some grades
were in excess of 9%. Could you tell us how you used the choco moose(?)
bars? How many hand positions do you use on it, and in what circumstances?

I usually ride drops and wonder how it feels riding such difficult terrain
in an upright position with upright bars. I am thinking of making my Sam an
upright bike and interested to know how works out.

[RBW] Re: Suspension Losses - Now Confirmed by Other Research

2016-06-15 Thread Lungimsam
Thanks Jan,

Did you test the Rando vs. Ti bikes by powering the bikes with riders? I
know some of your studies have used small samples with human riders
powering the vehicles.

Is it possible that a study involving a human rider powering the bike will
be reliable and valid in light of the fact that the state of the engine
changes moment by moment? I am by no means a scientist, so forgive my
ignorance. Sometimes when I read about the studies all these other ideas
pop up in my mind to explain away the findings and I don't know if they
matter. I don't know if the ideas would really have any type of meaningful
effect on the results.

Also all the other extraneous factors like the fact that the bikes weren't
ridden exactly on the same line, subjected to different air movement
patterns, minor grade changes in the different lines, different
components/frames, etc.

I think it is really difficult to test bike performance because there are
so many variables. And while one may be explained away as noise in the
data, all the elements, taken as a whole must have a profound effect on the
movement of the bikes.

Is this true or is it not so difficult to get reliable data in bike tests?

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-15 Thread Garth

Thank you Rene as this is very valuable ! I'm still trying to wrap my
head around what these bikes handle like compared to the Bombadil I have. I
also have another sport/touring type frame with less trail which handles
like every racing bike frame I used to ride, which means the front end
responds to every little upper body movement. The Bombadil in comparison
is resistant in that way, better responding to hip movement. The sport
touring bike while standing feels completely different than the Bombadil
too, almost as if on the Bombadil I'm pushing a wheelbarrow .

So with even lower trail than the kind of racing bike likely with mid
50's trail, would it be even moreso responsive to every upper body movement
or something altogether different ?

Does anyone have experience with both Rivvy (mid-trail, burly rigid

On today's ride I raised my stem a cm (which also brings the bars back

Lots of climbing with single track, and it felt great.

What will the sizes be? On the instagram it claims to be a 53, and
somebody asked about "the 59" like it's a think and Deacon says there is a
60. What are the nominal sizes? I was kind of tempted by the Hunqapillar

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-15 Thread René Sterental
Hi Garth,

After my extensive research and e-mail exchanges with Jan, plus my
experience with my Atlantis & Hunqapillar, for upright riding, the low
trail target should be 40mm. The Rando bikes depicted usually have around
29mm of trail, meant for more forward positioning/fast riding with lower
handlebars.

The Atlantis/Hunqapillar have 40mm of trail and ride very well loaded and
unloaded; riding them loaded is amazingly nice.

For my custom, I requested 35mm of trail to have a bit more of the "pure
low trail" characteristics and also because i'm now riding with my bars
almost level with my saddle.

Still, if in doubt, 40mm seems to be the magical most versatile low trail
number to go for. And all caveats about getting used to what you ride apply.

Also, the difference in handling between 30 and 40mm of trail is much less
than the difference between 40 and 55, according to Jan's articles.

Ditto and ditto. If I want to do computing, I'll do it at home, with a
big monitor and a really nice clicking keyboard, rather than a screen
the size of a pocket cigar case and a touchscreen with virtual keys that
are too small and give no tactile feedback at all. For me, the
ergonomics of most recent electronic gadgets are simply terrible and I
hate using them, especially out in the sun, when I can't see the screen

otherwise forget about it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wald Big Basket + Nitto small front racks

2016-06-15 Thread Tim Gavin
Although Bill makes sensible suggestions (belt and suspenders), I don't
predict the second calamity happening with a Nitto M12.

The lower mounts of the M12 end in thick horizontal plates that slide over
your brake post (not likely to pivot) and the upper mount of the M12 is a
solid steel bolt that goes into the brake hole on your fork (not very
fragile).

I really like the M12, and I feel that it should be more sturdy and
load-capable than the other Nitto mini front racks, since it has no
moveable parts. However, I've never loaded my M12 very heavily nor mounted
a basket. So far, mine has only held a Small Trunksack with a load of
tools and sundries. And I have heard of M12 failures on other forums, but
I've never seen one to determine how/where the rack broke.

Back to the thread topic (baskets on mini racks), I had a Mark's rack /
small Wald basket combo on my Rivendell Road/650b (along with moustache
bars), and I definitely overloaded it a couple times. I carried several
beers (12 glass bottles, 16 pint cans) and also overloaded it with camping
stuff. The basket never bent and the Mark's rack was secure. But, I
didn't like how the bike handled with a loaded basket (wheel flop).

Also, I didn't like the moustache bars for long touring days (can't get
low/forward out of the wind). I actually traded the moustache bars, dirt
drop stem, and brake levers toward a rando bag from David Banzer (Treetop
designs).

Now, I have that Treetop rando bag on my Mark's rack (with long stays to
the dropout eyelets), and the handling is a bit better. There is still
noticeable wheel flop, but I think this setup is more secure. Running the
stays to the dropouts removed any side sway from the p-clamps, and the
rando bag is attached in three places (VO decaleur, tombstone strap, and
bottom strap).
Plus, the rando bag is very easy to use. Now I know why that design is so
favored by brevet riders.

Eventually, I'd like to try the rando bag on a low trail fork, but I
haven't yet.

Cheers,
Tim

Big construction in town with lots of rumbly loud trucks. Fortunately I was
doing well enough to try a ride and see how it went. Ended up riding an hour
more of single track than I have so far this year, with the ride totaling 5
hours.

Not much to tell, better to show. An amazing ride without a cloud in the sky.
60-70˚F. And not much wind.

[RBW] Re: Wald Big Basket + Nitto small front racks

2016-06-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
There are at least two reasons to add a strap. One is for load support. I
think Grant and Keven have both been fans of this. If you imagine an
arbitrarily heavy load in a basket you imagine the basket and rack bending
down and away from the handlebars. Run an Irish strap from the front edge
of the basket to the bars and pull it tight. However tight you pulled it,
that's the quantity of force you are unloading from the rack. It couldn't
hurt.

The second reason is catastrophe prevention. Riv has seen a few different
events where the rack has worked loose, pivoted forward into the tire, and
caused the front wheel to lock up, throwing the rider down-on-ground,
headfirst and fast. So, run an Irish strap to the rack that will limit
it's ability to pivot forward if it becomes detached up top. For me,
that's through the tombstone. It couldn't hurt.

In all cases try not to do dumb stuff.

[RBW] Car-free week

2016-06-15 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J. (Retired Partner)

Well, my 16 year-old new driver/daughter managed to roll into the trailer hitch
on a pickup truck in front of her, causing (notwithstanding her 5 MPH speed at
the time) several thousand dollars in damage to my car, and requiring a week's
worth of repair work. On the phone, the body shop asked me if I wanted a
rental, and I looked at the beautiful weather outside and decided to decline.
Packed my Homer into the Audi, and headed for the body shop; unloaded and
jumped on Homer for the 15 mile return trip home. It's such a sweet-riding
bike -- I'm really looking forward to a week without my car.

As with many rides around Delaware, there was some pretty scenery along the
way, and a GREAT coffee shop, too! Pics prove it:

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-15 Thread tdusky
I started doing randonneuring a few yew years ago. And had a bike built by
John Fitzgerald for that purpose.
Low trail, lights and fenders wide tires etc… My current bikes are a 2001
Rivendell custom Long Low, an Atlantis, and a "72 Paramount P13.
The low trail geometry is amazing with or without a front load, it rides so
stable and feels totally correct. See my frame and
bike http://www.fitzcyclez.com/frames.html (that's me with my"Juice")
I hate riding my other bikes and I need to sell them. I am a steel, leather
wool guy all the way and find most of GP's way to be good. But why does he
build these mid trail bikes? Makes me wonder.
BTW my 63cm Long Low dark red custom Rivendell Joe Stark build and my 64cm
Atlantis are for sale. So get a low trail and you can go N-2 :)

Re: [RBW] Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-15 Thread Evan Baird
Do you know the axle to crown length for the Atlantis forks? I want to try to
get a batch of 50 or so 26er conversions made, but I wasnt sure if those were
shorter/longer than the OX1s. I realize that it's probably not a sustainable
product, but there seems to be more Atlanti owners who have/want to experiment
with this. Otherwise I was just going to get 1 1/8 for the LHT/Saga

Re: [RBW] Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-15 Thread masmojo
Steve, it's easy to see the added strength needed if you look around at many
disk brake frames they frequently have either very substantial rear drop outs
or a small tube or loop on the brake side that goes from the chain stay to the
seat stay.
As for the spelling I try to stay on top of it, but I only access this group
through my phone 90% of the time and it spell checks words for me, sometimes I
don't notice it's inserted the wrong word until I hit the post button! Then
it's too late to change

I agree with Richards comment about off road though, but interject that the
problem with popping over obstacles is not confined strictly to off road. I
only really ever hit light dirt trails around town here, but I can't count the
number of times I have had a hard contact with the front wheel trying to pop
over a curb. Until the Clementine I have never had to worry about getting snake
bite flats on the front wheel! AND having a basket on the front does not help
at all!
Speaking of Clementines, that black frame on the Riv site looks absolutely
sinister! If anyone wanted a step through and wanted it to look masculine, the
black certainly does that!

[RBW] Re: Thoughts on the whole low trail thing?

2016-06-15 Thread Garth

While I see lots about low trail bikes with drop bars , I have not
heard/seen much about riding on low trail bikes with long sloping top
tubes(6+ degrees) and high bars(at least above the saddle height).
Basically a much higher center of gravity than a drop bar bike. A recent
blug post GP mentioned something about this not being so desirable but did
not elaborate.

So basically I'm wondering how a Bombadil or Hunq would be with Alba
type bars at least couple inches above the saddle would be ?

I've considered another Bombadil or even a Hunq type frame but I need more
front foot-tire/fender clearance than either stock bike offers in 60+cm.
frames. I could do this by either going to a low trail design and/or 650b
wheels but I have no idea how it would ride.
