Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar Chronicles

2016-07-28 Thread Corwin
Sounds pretty wild to me. JP not only enjoys the enjoys the diversion -
he's created tools to assist him decipher your ruse. In this case, I
suggest presenting him with three options:

1) New Bosco bullmoose. Explain this is the highest risk option because
they may not work and you will be stuck with the bars - trying to sell them
for some fraction of what you paid.

2) New Boscos with the Nitto Lugged stem. This option will make the one you
really want look much better. You should add some wild reason why this
option is great.

3) New Boscos with a Dirt Drop or Tallux stem. This is likely the one you
want (or possibly just a new Dirt Drop or Tallux with less reach).

Then price options 1, 2 and 3 with JP's formula to make the (real) cost of
#1 $200, #2 $300 and #3 $100.

He should pick #3 and feel honored that you led/deceived him into picking
it.

What happens when you get a car repair bill or an invoice from the plumber?
Heck - what happens when you talk about buying a house?

Thanks,

Corwin

Corwin, you are so very right. I should be upfront with JP. But, for laughs, I
must tell you about The JP Official Manipulation Policy. Many years ago, when
we were first married, I would round down - ok, way down - when disclosing
purchases. He figured out that I was doing it, learned to run his own
calculations, and has developed his own formula for calculating how much off
the real price is. He - get ready - finds this FLATTERING because it shows I
care enough about him to manipulate him, and because it requires real effort
and finesse. Also, the policy is not just financial but applies to anything I
may be trying to negotiate with him.

We've made it 12 years, how many more do you think before he no longer finds
this cute?

I don't think I can pull off the new Clementine, but I bet I can finesse a pair
of bars onto the bike. 

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Chronicles

2016-07-28 Thread Corwin
Hi Leah -

I would level with hubby. He sounds pretty reasonable. Heck - he's got TWO
Rivendells in his garage. I would start with this - tell hubby you LOVE his
setup on the Clem and have not stopped thinking about it since you rode his
bike. I would ask Hubby if you can borrow his bike to take the kids to and
from school. Then I would ride the Clem, varying hand positions till you
get a feel for how the Boscos are different from Albas.

After a few rides on the Clem, I would approach Hubby again and suggest you
want to try Boscos on the Betty - but don't want to break the bank doing
so. You can suggest you swap bars between the Clem and Betty. I think if
you pose it as an adventure - he gets to try something new and help you in
the bargain - he will see the value in improving your situation. Then you
can mount the Boscos on the Betty and vary the hand positions - trying to
figure out if Boscos will work farther forward or not.

I think if you emphasize the adventure/fun part and make Hubby a partner in
your plan, it will go much farther. Plus, I don't think it's a good idea to
try to get your boys to hide anything from Hubby (or you). Once you have
made him a partner and thoroughly scoped out the situation, I am sure he
will see that a couple hundred dollars invested to make your biking [even
more] blissful is money well spent.

Thanks,

Corwin

Now that I don't live within riding distance of the local 10 mile bike

within the Rivendell philosophy of just hopping on and riding.

Not what or where you asked for, but the potential for a really, really
nice GF bike

That's been listed for a while.

[RBW] Re: 10-30 minute rides

2016-07-28 Thread David Banzer
I've been doing this with my 13-month old - Clem has a Yepp Mini on the
front now - a very slow 2-3 miles around the park that's across the street
from me. Almost everyday for the past 2 weeks, weather permitting. Besides
commuting, it's the most consistent cycling I've done in the past couple of
years.
And it's a ton of fun!

[RBW] 10-30 minute rides

2016-07-28 Thread Joe Bernard
Grant mentioned this to me a few weeks ago and I thought I'd pass it along: "A
10 to 30 minute ride is always a good idea." I really appreciated this because
- although I'm not trying to bust out metric centuries anymore - I still have a
tendency to think short rides don't count as a "real ride." Of course that's
silly, but apparently I needed to be reminded. Today I had exactly 30 minutes
available before work started, so I grabbed my Bobbin mini velo (Choco-Moose
bars) and hit the road. It was fabulous.

He also said, "You should never do a ride you wouldn't want to do every day.
Well maybe 4 times a year, 5 tops." I love that.

[RBW] Quick on/off basket? Quick on/off rack?

2016-07-28 Thread iamkeith
If you can return that rack, the pletscher clem rack would work well. There is
a built-in quick release system that allows you to use their basket or modify
one of your choosing. The flat, steel tabs at the bottom of the struts could
work with wingnuts on fixed studs for easy on/off mounting.

[RBW] Quick on/off basket? Quick on/off rack?

2016-07-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm asking my question on this list because baskets are a big topic here.
This is for the Dahon Hon Solo.

I have gotten tired of trying to stuff the Hoss full -- holding the gallon
of milk in place while I try to stuff in the six pack, and have both stay
in place so that there is room for the hamburger and buns and so forth.

I intended to buy a Dahon rack that will support panniers while giving
enough foot clearance, but of course I didn't think this through and bought
one of those pictured below. Sure, it holds Roller Packers just fine -- if
you have size 2 feet.

Anyway, rather than spend more for a hugely tall touring rack, I will rig
up some sort of rear basket, probably a large milk crate, but perhaps a
Wald of some sort.

But I don't want to haul the basket along everywhere, especially when I
collapse the bike to put it in the trunk. The bike folds perfectly with the
rack attached.

So, QR for basket, or QR for rack. Zip ties and hose clamps are out unless
I can devise a QR method for the rack itself.

Note that I intend to carry up to 30 lb and in bulk up to the size of 2
paper grocery sacks; such loads would be for very short distances -- a mile
or 2 at most.

QR rack: I've though that if I could find knobs threaded for the standard
rack boss bolts (what is that size called?), I could run longer bolts from
behind into the bosses, have them extend say 10-15 mm out the other side,
and simply remove and install the rack as needed -- spread legs, slip over
bolts, tighten down knobs or wingnuts. But I don't know of any such knobs
or wingnuts -- ideas?

QR basket: some way to quickly remove and attach the basket. This is good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O-z--jrw1Y

It's somewhat complex, and I wonder if the basket would be secure enough.

The "Fietsklik" looks promising, but it's $99 and apparently still
vaporware:

http://www.gizmag.com/fietsklik-quick-release-bike-carriers/31376/

Ideas?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Chronicles

2016-07-28 Thread Scott McLain
My wife rides a betty with a bosco bar. It has a super long stem to offset
some of the reach back of the bosco. Her betty is a 58 so it is already a
big size. The bosco's really make the cockpit shorter so there is not
enough room to operate for my taste. I think if you go to the boscos you
will want to make sure that your stem is long, like a 12cm (120mm). My
wife is 5-8 (I can't share any more of her measurements without her
permission).

Here are some pictures
https://flic.kr/p/HTwwiz

I think the albatross bar is more elegant, but the boscos will raise things
up quite a bit. Another option would be to use the "dirt drop" style stem
on your albatross bar.

Best,
Scott

[RBW] Re: New Riv Fixed/Single Speed in 2017???

2016-07-28 Thread S. Greco
I'm not sure the Riv single speed efforts came any where close to pandering
to the fixie crowd, but I do share your confusion about the trend. So many
people rolling around on fixed skinny tired track bikes when theres not a
track nor velodrome nearby but plenty of potholed roads. I think one of the
most interesting parts of trends like the fixed/ss craze is when they reach
the walmart demographic and you find some bike named "the fixie" decked out
in all matching lime green parts or something on the shelves of your local
big box stores. I often wonder if there will be a time in which the rando
renaissance will make it that far and we will see racked-out fendered big
tire bikes at your local walmart - i severely doubt it but it's hilarious
to me as a hypothetical. One thing that really makes me laugh about the
rando trend is that if it comes to pass as most trends do, it will have
left many useful bikes in the world as opposed to some other fads such as
certain bmx, fixie, racers which left behind only highly specialized /
limited use bikes.

[RBW] Re: New Riv Fixed/Single Speed in 2017???

2016-07-28 Thread George Schick
Not too many years ago I used to see a lot tweenie kids riding around on
20" bikes that resembled BMX with the saddle mounted all the way down to
the top tube so they had to stand up most of the time while peddling, if
they didn't want their knees banging into their chins. I stopped one of
'em on the trail once and asked him what that business was all about. He
said they have their saddles like that so they can do "tricks." I looked
closely at his bike and indeed saw that it had more heavily spoked wheels,
a circular gizmo that slid up and down the head tube with the front brake
cables attached to either side so the wheel could be turned 360 degrees,
and axle mounted pegs on the front and rear wheels where one could stand
while doing "stunts." Funny thing is that I never once saw any one of them
doing stunt riding - it was apparent just a status symbol for that age
group.

That same demographic, now in high school, seems to have lashed onto
"pimped out" fixies decked out in all sorts of pastel frame, wheel, saddle,
and drive train colors. Apparently just another status symbol because I
never see any of 'em actually doing any head's down riding on them; just
hanging with the crowd at their favorite gathering places. Not sure how
many bike companies are trying to jump onto that bandwagon before that fad
passes, as well.

[RBW] Rosco Bubbe #11

2016-07-28 Thread WETH

When Rivendell announced the Rosco Bubbe project I didn't pay much attention.
I had all the bikes I needed! Or so I told myself and continue to tell myself
everyday! Slowly an idea took root and grew as I periodically followed the
Rosco Bubbe project. My eldest son was outgrowing his bike and at the age of
16 had reached almost full height. The sizing of the first run of Roscos fit
me perfectly and had a PBH range that would fit my son even if he grew from his
current one inch shorter than I to one inch taller. Of course, should he grow
more than that, I'll have to ride it! :)

I showed him the Rosco Bubbe tumblr site, and he liked the bike and the overall
concept of the Rosco project. I took a leap of faith and placed my deposit for
one of the 13 Rosco Bubbes. (When dealing with Rivendell, it really isn't a
leap of faith. They know what they're doing!) The bike, #11, arrived earlier
than I expected and was painted an awesome matte green. From my parts bin and
off my son's old bike came most of the components. New Little Big Bens, new
Tektro R559 brakes, and a new 26.8 seatpost made Rosco road ready. The fenders,
off his old bike, still need to be tweaked a bit.

I have ridden it a few miles-I had to test it didn't I?-and it rides so
smoothly. There is no twitchiness in the handling. This must be the long
chain stay effect I have read others praising. I will certainly be borrowing
this bike from my son! A card accompanied the frame explaining the history of
the Rosco Bubbe line of bikes, and the card had been signed on the back by many
Riv employees- a nice touch!

Re: [RBW] Handlebar Chronicles

2016-07-28 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J. (Retired Partner)
Don't ever like to disagree with smart guys like Bill, Deac and Mark, but much
as I like Bullmoose bars of all types, the Bosco Bullmoose (which I have on two
bikes) is perfect on one (Mystery Bike) and only ok on the other (MB-2
Resurrectio), and the reason is bar grip angle (which is, I think, very
sensitive to frame size and geometry).

I really do love Boscos, though, so I'd vote for whichever option involves
getting the regular Boscos and finding a stem to fit. Someone said stems are
pretty cheap used on this list, and I agree 100%. I must have half a dozen
reasonably nice ones I'd sell for a very reasonable price, and a couple of
serviceable ones I'd let go for the cost of shipping.

2016-07-28 Thread Scott Henry
Evan,
I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Garmin Edge 25
$170 at Nashbar right now

Sounds exactly what you want

I have both versions and I agree with Bill. Bosco Bulls! Or lie down and wait
for the feeling to pass.

[RBW] Re: Handlebar Chronicles

2016-07-28 Thread Garth

What was the stem length you measured and exactly what stem is it ?

As I mentioned previously, you may simply be able to raise the Alba bars
with a different stem. Neither the Alba or the Bosco is anything special
by themselves, the purpose of them is have your hands where you want them *in
conjunction with the stem*. They work in unison, change one and the other
may "seem" totally wrong/right, but not really at all as *it's the
combination that counts* as neither by themselves will do anything for you.
