I have another mixte, but I did want to make a recommendation to those of

I have this leather frame handle

on my bike. I am sure a crafty person could better one as well (the prices
has increased quite a bit since I purchased). But this makes it way easier
to navigate the stairs with my mixte. It puts your hand in the perfect

[RBW] Re: Tire advice

2016-08-14 Thread bo richardson
I wanted the widest tires I could fit on the Rambouillet with fenders. I have
32 marathons on it now.

I was frustrated because I couldn't find ruffy tuffys or gravel king slicks in
32. But someone on the list mentioned gravel King 32s and so I went back to
searching and found them everywhere except Bike tires Direct and Western Bikes.

thank you all for your help in this matter.Lots of nice 28s out there on sale
but 32s are almost like searching for 27".
I ajlmost went with the Reccomended Soma but 33 is a little wider and the price
difference for two tires was 40$.
I would like to know more about the somas however, for next time.

Thanks again.

[RBW] Introducing the wife to night riding.

2016-08-14 Thread bo richardson
I think night riding before the bars close is safer than during the day. Fewer
cars, less for the cars to look at since it is dark,. If you are lit up they
can see you better than during the day.

One of the nicest rides I ever had was after leaving Seattle late one
afternoon, I ended up headed north on Chuckanut headed for Bellingham around
eleven pm night. I think three cars passed me in ten miles. Some ambient light
and lovely scenery and quiet in unbelievable ways. I shut the Schmidt and LED
off for most of the ride.

2016-08-14 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Outstanding ride today! I'll give more of a report tomorrow when I recharge
a bit, but the highlights are: good people, great pre-ride coffee, rad
bikes, hot, awesome fire road ride with decent climbs/elevation,
insanely hot, cool pond stop at the top of the climb, crazy fire road
descent, downpour for the last few miles.

There were a few Hunq's and Atlanti, a couple B-stones, including co-owner
Tracy under biking on an RB-1. Thanks to James and Tracy for hosting!

[RBW] Re: Clipless or Clips?

2016-08-14 Thread 'Mobile Bill' via RBW Owners Bunch
I commute and joy ride several thousand miles a year on my Saluki and Betty
Foy. I have a hard enough time funding shoes that fit comfortably. Thank
goodness I don't have to buy special shoes to clip into my pedals. I've
used Power Grips with MKS touring pedals on my Saluki for nearly a decade
(I used clips before that). I seldom fall behind when I ride with other
riders, but I am certain that when I do, it has absolutely nothing to do
with my pedals or my shoes or how they are connected. The Power Grips do
have some benefits, and here's how I know: I sometimes wish I had them on
the Betty Foy. In wet climates like the one I live in, they definitely keep
the average shoe from slipping on the pedals.I wished for them the other
night, riding the Betty home in the rain, as my shoes wandered all over the
pedals. Some people (Grant?) have suggested that the extra contact on the
brief transition to an upstroke or a downstroke is beneficial, particularly
on hills. I'm not sure about this, but the power grips do seem to provide a
bit of extra confidence as I'm grinding away on steep hills with aggressive
companion riders. On dry days, and when I'm cranking on my way to the
normal business of living, I can say with utter confidence that regular
shoes and regular ol pedals haven't ever been improved upon.

Bought these from a fellow list member, but it turns out they’re slightly too
wide to work on my bike.

Nice pair of tires with apparently almost no miles on them. A little dirty, but
otherwise 90% perfect. A few minutes with an SOS pad will have them looking
like new.

Standard (not Extra Leger) tan casing; black tread.

$75 shipped in the CONUS.

[RBW] Free hub body comes loose

2016-08-14 Thread Howard Hatten
Group help needed.
Lately my shifting has been getting bad. I've checked the deraileur hanger and
it is good. I switched to friction mode and it worked fine. All of the
driveline has been cleaned and lubed. Thought I was good to go but today I
developed an annoying clicking sound on all the pedal strokes. A roadside
inspection revealed a wobble in my wheel. When I got home I pulled the bearings
out and to my surprise the free hub body fell off on the floor. The attachment
bolt somehow completely unscrewed itself. Has anybody ever had this happen.
Almost seems like it was never tightened when assembled.

Thanks

[RBW] New Clem-L Bike Day

2016-08-14 Thread LLM
The Clem-L Complete that I pre-ordered back in April, arrived this past
Friday. (Happy dance!!) The photo was taken today during my first grocery
run with the bike. The approximately 11-mile round trip is my longest ride
to date since a 2-year disability layoff from cycling, and recent hip
replacements. The low gearing covered for my still low levels of fitness
and aerobic capacity, as I huffed and puffed across the rolling hills of
Albany, NY. If it had not been in the 90's with oppressively high
humidity, I could have gone further. Aside from the thumb shifters, which
I am still figuring out how to use well, riding the bike is easy and fun.

I added the "requisite" Mark's Rack with a Wald medium basket and medium
Sackville ShopSack. The AXE Victory frame lock (recently added to the Riv
site) fits easily over the P65 fenders. I like not having to fumble with a
u-lock. I've stowed a cable lock in the Sackville Multisack for securing
the front wheel and frame to bike racks. The gum grips are by Rustine, and
bell by Spurcycle. I usually ride Brooks saddles, and I have a B67S that I
thought I would put on the bike. However, I'm finding the stock saddle to
be pretty comfortable, at least for short hops, and for now, I like not
having to worry about rain falling on leather. I have a Pletscher Clem
rack in the wings that I will add at some point. I'll probably also swap
in the nice Wellgo platform pedals from my Surly. For now, the bike has
all I need.

My early impression is that the bike is going to be perfect for me!

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-14 Thread Sean McAtee
Howard -

Congratulations on your frame order! I noticed earlier today that there
were only three grey Cheviots left. I have a funny feeling that I am going
to follow your lead before the day is over. A Cheviot is quickly becoming
the bike that I do not want to let get away.

I can't seem to recall past practice on "older" frames when a new set
arrives. Is it likely that the remaining "old" Cheviots in stock will be
priced a bit lower as a web special? I do like the green color of the
current frame. However, it lacks the cream headtube of the newer models.

I will be moving the vast majority of the parts over from an old Trek 520 -
Albastache bars, Brooks B 17 saddle, Shimano derailleurs, etc. However, I
will need to get a new set of wheels, as my current bikes all have 130 cm
rear hub spacing. I'm probably going to buy an inexpensive set of wheels,
such as these currently being offered by Rivendell: wheels
. I will also likely add
a new crank - likely the Sugino XD2 wide/low.

I am looking at using a Cheviot for the same general purposes as you.
Congratulations again.

Sean

Re: [RBW] Re: If you were going to design a poor man's faux Riv "just ride" bicycle ....

2016-08-14 Thread Patrick Moore
The 3 Sportses I've owned felt in comparison to the (2) Sprites and (1)
Collegiate as if they had:

1. Too low a Q
2. Too short a top tube (or too little reach to bar)

I felt while riding them I was too much "on top" of the bike instead of
"in" it, a sensation I didn't have with the others, but similar to the
feeling with the Indian rod brake roadsters.

The Sprites I owned didn't feel like this, nor did the Collegiate.

Is it true that the Sprite frame was the same as the Sports frame? They
certainly didn't feel so to me.

I have a PBH of 81 and ride my saddle at 70.5. My AHH is a 54. I could
have gotten the 55 but I wanted a bike with 650b wheels (at the time the 55
would have had 700c wheels). I would never say that I had "too much"
seatpost showing. It's not nearly a "fist full". I don't think what the

it's going to be your bike, and your decision.

[RBW] Re: What size A. Homer Hilsen should I get, 54 or 56?

2016-08-14 Thread John Hawrylak
Tom

I am 5'7", my PBH is 80.6cm and SH is 70.5cm . I have 2 21" (53.3cm C-T)
Schwinn Panasonics.

Both have 80 to 95mm of straight seat post showing and both need apporx
125mm of quill length to obtain HB height = SH. STA and HTA and TTL are
75 Voyagur II STA = 73deg, HTA = 72deg, TTL = 57cm Stem Length =
80mm Cockpit length = 64.5cmPossibly Sakae Radon HB (stock)
88 Voyagur STA = 74deg, HTA = 71deg, TTL = 54.5cm Stem Length =
100mm Cockpit Length = 63 cm Nitto Noodle

If I had my choice a 55 or 56 cm frame with a 56 TTL would probably be
best. So I would choose the larger if the TTL made sense.

The RBW advice given seems strange since they always seemed to favor the
larger size

[RBW] Re: CSJ: Non-moose Boscos

2016-08-14 Thread Kai Vierstra
SKS 65's, P65 is the designation I think? They've been on a shelf for 6 months
waiting for that bike. They're not really big enough for the "Big Ones", but
they're big enough that I had to trim them due to rubbing from the chain when
in low low low gear. Now that I've trimmed the fender the chain rubs the tire
if I'm that low, which I'm rarely in. Still plenty of room between the 2.35"ers
and the frame and fork. I should measure those to see what the real width is on
the massive Alex DM24 rims (which look like they might be tubeless compatible
but Riv says they don't think so and Alex rims isn't very good at returning my
email).

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-14 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I think your current green bags will be fantastically attractive with a
gray Chev. Regarding your color choice, when choosing between orange and
black for my Clementine, though I like orange bikes, I went with black,
partially because there is a rather prominent Public mixte in town in
bright orange, and the step-through style for a man seemed to call for
something more understated. I was not overly concerned with visibility, as
I almost always wear a hi-vis safety vest when commuting, and run lights in
the daytime. I would have been equally happy with the Clem (now Chev) gray
or Cheviut green, but neither was an option in the Clementine.

It sounds like the Cheviot will be just the ticket for you! It's great you
got to ride both bicycles a decent amount before making a decision. Being
in New York, that was not a possibility at the time. I seriously considered
the Chev, but several factors made the Clementine a clear choice for my
needs. I already had a mixte style bike, and though I am sure the Cheviot
would be "better" in some respects than my Rivved out Le Tour--well, I
already had a mixte. Also I was on the cutting edge of both sizes. My
philosophy on that is the bike will work just fine, your body will adjust.
But while I could easily handle the 60cm Chev (my SH is 73-74), I did not
particularly want a 700c bike with massive rubber and fenders for a city
bike application. Plus, in that size, there is no way I would be mounting
with any other motion than the leg swing from the back. (And as it is, I
can barely maneuver my 52 Clem up the three flights of narrow stairs to my
apartment!) Though I suspect I may have given up a tad in spriteliness of
ride quality, I have other bicycles that have plenty of pep, and the
Clementine over these past months has created an appreciation in me for
other ride qualities. And, as I had figured it might, it has subtly
transformed what I might call my riding demeanor. I have no doubt your
Cheviot will do the same for you!
