[RBW] Re: Fantasyland Daydream: Ti "Riv"

2016-09-01 Thread Bruce Smitham
Wow, finally a topic I want to discuss. I love titanium and especially my
56cm Ritchey Ti Cross Breakaway. It's the best bike I've ever owned. Super
light and not flexy (even with the couplers) plus I can travel with it.
I've done light touring, serious single track in the Snoqualmie Pass
recently and for rides up and down the coast of San Diego it really
performs. I'm running the Schwalbe G-One's 38mm with plenty of clearance
that work superb on and off road. Set up with Shimano XT 1 X 11 drivetrain
(11/42 cassette) with Gevenalle brifters in friction mode- I can swing the
entire range of the cassette effortlessly. Paul Mini Moto brakes, Salsa
Cowchipper bars and Brooks Cambium C17 carved. I look back and really don't
miss my Sam Hillborne, Atlantis or Roadeo. Lot's of that also has to do
with the fit. I would love to try out a 54cm Hunq but I've got a Surly ECR
with 3" tires, same drivetrain as above but with Jeff Jones Loop bars. Now
I'm riding the heck out of both of these.

See you on the road or trails,

Bruce in San Diego

M5x.8 is "standard" for 99% of bike applications - dropout eyelets,
down tube shifter brazeons, etc. Not.sure why (or if in fact you
should be doing so!) your tap doesn't play nice w/ your frame - but,
careful Will Robinson!

M5x1.0 is a very obscure ("French") threading- some Simplex
retrofrictions used this.

[RBW] WTB: 25.4mm Stem - Periscopa or tall dirt drop stem

2016-09-01 Thread Mike K.
Folks, I'm looking for a dirt drop stem for my 25.4mm On One midge bars.
Trying to finalize my Schwinn Voyageur. I have Albatross bars on it now,
but I miss the On One bars I used to ride on my last bike. The reason I
don't have them now is that I didn't have a stem to get them high enough,
and the stock stem from the Voyageur was itty bitty.

If you have one that you can part with, let me know.

Thanks!

[RBW] Correct Tap Pitch for 4mm & 5mm Threads

2016-09-01 Thread John Hawrylak
What is the correct thread pitch for the 4mm and 5mm taps for common
bicycle threads???

I just want them to clean the threads, not do actual threading.

I bought a 5mm tap with 0.8mm pitch (fine ). It will not thread into the
dropout eyelets. Is the treading a 1.0mm pitch (coarse)?? If so, I will
have to buy the 5mm x 1.0mmpitch.

Also, bought a 4mm with 0.7mm pitch. Is this the correct pitch for 4mm
threads??

TIA

[RBW] Re: FS: Tires & Large Green Saddlesack

2016-09-01 Thread Glen
Updating,

This morning the Saddlesack found a new home in Portland and I've sold one
pair of the 650b Big Bens.

Here is what's left:

1 pair of 650b Big Bens - 50mm Active Line Kevlar Guard - $60 per
pair shipped to CONUS

1 pari of 700c Big Bens - 50mm Performance Line RaceGuard Liteskin - $60
per pair shipped to CONUS

1 pair of 700c Vittoria Randonneur Hypers - 38mm - $60 per pair shipped to
CONUS

Wider than I want on my Ram and narrower than I want on my Atlantis so
they have to go. Mounted once on each bike and pedaled around the block.

[RBW] Re: Fantasyland Daydream: Ti "Riv"

2016-09-01 Thread S. Greco
Cherry Bicycles (John Cherry) or a Tournesol (Hampsten/Indy Fab) come to
mind. I don't believe Hampsten is making Tournesols anymore. Haven't
checked on Cherry availability or pricing in a long time. It seems like a
tautology to say you could get what you want from a custom builder. As for
Riv making a Ti frame it seems counter to their position in the world of
cycles. I do like how Bruce Gordon, who primarily builds in steel,
generally makes a sort-of concept car style bike once a year-ish using
different materials and construction methods. Seeing how Riv is getting
more experimental with construction (Clem) and in batch offerings (Rosco)
It doesn't seem completely ridiculous.

[RBW] Re: Cantilever brake question...

2016-09-01 Thread Garth

FWIW, Rene's Shimano R600 levers are regular brake only levers , they
are no different than any mtb or bar end lever in cable pull.

Everyone is just guessing as to what the issue is and all that we can do
without seeing it and feeling it in person. I assume his cabling to the
rear is perfectly clear of all sense of drag, but that also is just an
assumption. It's gotta be perfect first and foremost :) The easiest way to
check is to disconnect the brake yoke and hold it in your left and actuate
the lever with lever in right hand. It ought to be smooth as a hot knife
through butter. If not the housing end needs some refining.

[RBW] CS Lengths

2016-09-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
On a recent thread I posted that, having built up one of each, the only
difference between the Betty Foy & the Cheviot was the paint job and the
name. Someone replied that the Cheviot had longer chain stays. I have
finally gotten around to measuring all the bikes in our stable, including
my daughters new Cheviot. Here's what I recorded, measure from the center
of the BB to the center of the drop out.

Saluki - 445mm (this is a very early model) 63 CM, 650B wheels,
Ram - 445 ( Early Blue) 62CM
Betty Foy - 450 (Demo, last one out the door) 55 CM
Cheviot - 450 (last of the last Orange batch) 52CM

And for good measure:
1984 Trek 620 60 CM 450

Bilenky custom touring tandem - 460 & 26" wheels

I haven't measured my old Marinoni stage racing frame, nor the SOMA Dbl
Xcross in the basement.

Michael

[RBW] Re: Cantilever brake question...

2016-09-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
Jeremy, I didn't read your post as a polemic, but rather as illuminating.
My personal experience has been that some road levers, especially Shimano
SIS, pull too much cable to work effectively with cantis. My
recommendation to the OP, before spending any money, call Paul's and talk
through the problem with them. They are very customer oriented. I would
still bet that the system needs a different set of levers, not a different
set of brakes.

Ryan asked how Lungimsam heard that Riv is making a batch of singlespeeds
"for Japan".

Those of us who are subscribed to receive update emails from Rivendell

something about a batch of singlespeeds for Japan. Ryan, if you want me to
forward you the entire email, send me a PM and I'll be happy to do it.
 Here's a quote from it:

We’re making a small run of single-speeders for Japan, and may get some
overflow here. If you think we’ll have large sizes, you’re morosely
mistaken.

[RBW] FS: Custom made frame pack

2016-09-01 Thread Mario Rocchio
Hello! I made this frame pack for my Rawland Sogn and I do not need it
anymore as the bike is currently unrideable. Fits any bike with an inside
TT measurement of 20" and inside headtube measurement of 3.5", about a 56cm
frame.

Materials are:
-VX51 Xpac side/top panel
-Ballistics nylon on the bottom
-Closed cell foam padding where it hits the headtube and downtube
-YKK water resistant zipper
-Milspec hook and loop straps
-Shock cord lace-up on the TT

Asking $120, let me know if you're interested!

[RBW] Ride Report: The Abandoned Lake Shore Line

2016-09-01 Thread Trenker

The first picture doesn’t show that behind me is a 200-foot sandy cliff. I
had been having a nice time in SWO, did some fishing in the Nith river and
was in the middle of a morning ride along Lake Erie when I came to a
barrier with a sign, “Road Closed”, and a path beyond it that looked like
an opportunity to follow what had once been a road. I couldn’t tell how
long it had been abandoned. At first the going was pleasant, riding on a
faint path through knee-high weeds, here and there signs saying danger,
etc. then I came to the reason the highway had been abandoned: a huge
desolation where the lakeside had caved in, no way to go down the cliff, so
I had to follow the desecration around the edge of the cliff and hope that
there was some passable trail on the other side, or go back and retrace my
steps. I chose to push on, and soon found myself in a jungle of chest-high
vines. I had to carry the bike on my shoulder, at one point I realized I
was crossing a split-rail fence which was somewhere beneath my feet while I
waded through the vines, sometimes coming to a complete stop and having to
disentangle myself. I emerged at the edge of a cornfield, which I could
follow where it skirted close to the edge of the cliff. The corn was over
my head, providing a nice cover for my passage, and there were some jimson
weeds growing at the edge. When I got to the far side of the defile I had
to pass through the jungle again, at one point my bike was secured fast and
I toppled forward but ended up suspended a few feet above the ground. My
chain was caught in an ancient branch. I managed to free it with no damage
except for a snapped zip tie on the front basket. I made it through the
jungle and then had to walk between an impenetrable forest and a tobacco
field, finally coming out in the ludicrous situation of walking down a
farmer’s driveway which had a gate at the end that I had to lift the bike
over, and a sign that said “no trespassing” pointing the opposite way from
which I had come.

I had made it back to the road, and soon found a beautiful secluded beach
where I could strip down and have a swim, however it could have been easily
reached by the usual road without the jungle exertions, a road that also
featured a campground with a sign that said “bikers welcome” which did not
mean bicyclists. Through this exploration the Atlantis comported itself
admirably, although I had been carrying it much of the way, in other words
it had been riding me instead of me riding it. For the second half of the
day I made my way slowly back to my home, one of those marches where you go
slower and slower and take more and more breaks as you near your
destination, but there were definite periods of fun and enjoyment as well.

[RBW] Re: Cantilever brake question...

2016-09-01 Thread Jeremy Till
My post was not intended as a polemic, but rather simply to clarify some of
the dynamics at play with cantilever brakes and point out that high
mechanical advantage does not necessarily create the highest possible
braking force. High mechanical advantage brakes like v-brakes and discs
(both mechanical and hydraulic) are great for mountain biking; I've used
both on my off-road rigs.

Re: [RBW] Re: Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-09-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
That Back-a-Bike bottom buckle isn't weight bearing and, as Doug points
out, prevents flapping. Flapping and clapping panniers may not be an issue
for you, so you could either go without connecting the bottom buckle (at
least it's a sewn on buckle on my lassie's bags) or you can clip it round
any part of the rack/frame that doesn't interfere with the chain. I often
just secure my panniers at the top of the rack for grocery runs, and that
includes some jouncy and bouncy dirt, so you'll be fine just anchoring the
top of the bags. Also, you can get in and out of the panniers with a loaded
SaddleSack, it's just a bit of work.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-09-01 Thread Takashi
Leah, I've been enjoying reading your great story. Thanks for sharing!

About Backabike Bags:
I think there are loops on your bags through which you can run straps.
You can secure the bottom of your bags to the rack with John's Irish Straps
which Riv sells.
(ANY strap will work for that matter, but Irish Straps are best-looking,
right?)
Attached picture is of my Hunqapillar with Hub Area Bags on front, smaller
version of Backabike Bags, secured with Irish Straps.

Good luck.
I'm looking forward to reading more of your stories.
