1. Which one has flatter ramps and lines up better with the Shimano BLR400

2. Which one is more like a Noodle?

Re: [RBW] Re: 700X42C Tire Recommendation

2016-09-07 Thread cyclotourist
Leslie, I have MSOs and my Quickbeam... GREAT tires! Don't need the tread
though, and want the extra 2mm if I can get it!

So, I obsessively swapped out tires in the dark tonight (no lights in bike
shed!). The Nomads I forgot I had (first world problems) fit perfectly! A
purely subjective, five minute ride, first with the stoker and then
without, makes me think these are perfect! Just the feel I was looking for.
Getting close to that firm marshmallow ride that eluded me to this point!
The Nomads are fantastic with a bit more pressure. Sidewall says max 80psi,
so that's what I went to (Remember, close to 400lbs of team + rig). Their
sidewalls are definitely thinner than the LBBs, but I believe I can feel
the difference in cush (no, not Kush... at least not till November). Will
probably degrade in my shed, as I don't get along well with skinwall tires.
Measure 41.8 on 25mm rims. All systems are go!

Thanks for the recommendations, worked out great! Might have some LBBs for
sale, but will probably keep for back ups.

- Head tube length: 20.8cm
- Seat stay length: 55cm
- Chain stay length: 46cm
- BB drop: 67mm
- Fork Rake: 70mm
- Fork Trail: 35mm
- Stand-over height: 84.9 (per spec, I haven't measured it with the Compass

Yes, Ellicott City is hilly. Some times I feel bogged down on the hills
around here. I am not a strong rider, that is why IH100 felt hilly to me.
But I had a great time and seemed to get over the hills easily enough. I
never felt bogged down, like riding at home. Nicely rolling in Indian Head!

I am new to century riding. So maybe it is the distance and not so much the
hills that tires me out.

I am sure that the skinnytubed/thinwall thing makes a difference, but not
sure if I could tell. Not sure everyone could tell. I was mainly pointing
out that some people don't seem to notice. But maybe they haven;t ridden
anything else for comparison. Some people can tell. Some think about such
things, some don't.\

I don't feel that big a diff between my 650b 42, 38, and 32mm supple
GB?Compass tires, so I may not have a sensitive palette for tires. Even my
Ram on 700c x 32's feels just as cushy as hetres on 650b to me. It is at
the 28mm level that I can start to feel a diff. So I know I am not so
sensitive to the tire widths.

But I look forward to riding a skinny bike someday. I often have thought
about a Boulder skinny All-Road.

But congrats to Rene for the amazing custom bike! His changing setups are
very interesting to read about!

[RBW] Re: 700X42C Tire Recommendation

2016-09-07 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Thanks for that one, Chris.

I'm going to mount up the Nomads languishing in storage. I quit running
them on my single because at lower pressure they really flopped during
cornering and that was a bit disconcerting. I think at the higher pressures
I'd be running on a tandem, they will do great. I don't recall how big they
got, at least 40. Maybe 42 I can't find anything listing max pressure
recommendation for them, hopefully 80psi won't be too much. That will also
let me judge better if the 45mm (nominal) Supremes would fit. That would be
sweet!

To reiterate, nothing wrong at all with the Little Big Bens. They're just a
touch below would I can fit and therefore want to max out capacity. They
measure right at 38mm on the casing, measured between the sipping in the
tread. Their thicker tread would probably feel a bit clunky on a single,
but on the tandem with the extra weight and higher pressure, they feel
good.

I have a Nitto Big Rear Rack. Purchased new from Rivendell, it has been on
a 56cm Bombadil and a 58cm Atlantis. It precedes the newest revision with
the secondary pannier rail. I'd call this the "large" frame size geometry,
in that it expects the seatstays to be more vertical. I'd let it go for
$120 picked up in El Cerrito, CA and $135 shipped.

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Quickbeam 58cm for sale

2016-09-07 Thread Eric Norris
FYI, I recently shipped a bike via Amtrak with great results. Amtrak sells
their own bike box for about $15, and because it’s oversized all that’s
necessary is to take off the pedals and turn the handlebars. The bike then just
rolls in (I added foam padding when I shipped the bike), which makes it much
easier to pack.

I shipped a bike this way from California to Syracuse, NY, for $84 including
insurance, and it arrived in about three days. Amtrak will ship to any of their
stations and then hold it there free for several days and $3 per day thereafter.

If you have the time and are OK with disassembling the bike, BikeFlights or
other similar options is a great choice. For those of us who have bikes with
racks, fenders, etc., that are a little more difficult to take apart, Amtrak is
worth looking into.

Re: [RBW] Re: My custom is finished!

2016-09-07 Thread René Sterental
Yes!

True-temper tubing:
- Top Tube: .9-.6-.9 - 28.6mm
- Down Tube: .9-.6-.9 - 31.8mm
- Seat Tube: .9-.6 (the BB lug doesn't require the tube to be thicker on
that section) - 28.6mm
- Chain Stays: Round-oval-round - .8
- Seat Stays: .7 - 16mm
- Fork: Kaisei "Toei Special" Fork Blades sold by Compass, I believe.

I had originally thought it would be built with lighter tubes, like the
.8-.5-.8 on the Homer, but never explicitly requested that and Steve chose
the above. So it's equivalent to my Atlantis in terms of tubing.

If/when I lose the 40-60 lbs I'm still carrying and decide I want one of
those super-light planing frames, I'll deal with that. But honestly, I
don't know that I would. I'd have to test ride one when I'm a skinny person
and decide then. The custom handles so nicely, that there would have to be
a dramatic difference and it would also depend on the type of riding I'm
doing.

- Is the 18 tooth cog fixed or free? I should be able to use any brand

I was able to fit Compass Barlow Pass 700x38, but they they ended up measuring
about 35mm on Velocity Aerohead rims. This was about as big as I would
comfortably go. I'm a little OCD about not rubbing through the paint. Maybe
2-3mm of clearance on each side between the chainstays. There was plenty of
room under the brake arches. I occasionally ride the bike on smooth crushed
limestone trails and like to have a little extra room. The Jack Browns fit
perfect and I think RBW was able to get fenders to work this them on the Roadeo.

Re: [RBW] Looking for large Nitto rear rack

2016-09-07 Thread Tim Gavin
The Nitto Mt Campee R20

is a medium/large rear rack. Exemplary Nitto quality at a lower price
($123).

It does not have double top rails like the Riv/Nitto rear racks, so it's
harder to fit both panniers and a trunk. I use an R20 on my Riv Road/650b
and it works perfectly with Ortlieb panniers.

now a 29" x 2.5" but I've read that a 700c x 40 version is in the works.
Supposedly a bombproof tire with surprising performance. You might check
out some reviews to see if it's something you might be interested in
waiting for.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Mark's Bar 46cm - SKS P45 Fenders - VO 700c 45mm Smooth Fenders.

2016-09-07 Thread David Banzer
I've had these parts hanging out in my office, and I think my boss is
beginning to suspect that all I do is wrench on bikes during office hours.
Help me clean out my office!
Seriously though, I'm moving soon and don't want to take these 3 items back
home where I'll just need to pack them up again.
For the list's sake - I'll likely have a few more FS posts throughout
September, but that should be it for me for a while - so bear with me and
excuse all the FS posts.

Shipping is NOT included on these - they're sorta bulky so shipping rates
will vary by zip code.
Local pickup is highly encouraged! Preference goes to a local buyer, but I
certainly can ship these it need be.

1.) Nitto Mark's Bar - 46cm - 26.0mm clamp - got these used, tried them
out, going to stick with my B132s instead, tape residue, nice condition -
$40

2.) SKS P45 Fenders - regular ones, not longboards, I used these for a bit
before deciding I needed wider fenders - missing some of the black stay end
pieces - stays are uncut - $20

3.) Velo Orange 700c 45mm Smooth Fenders - includes all hardware, holes
drilled: front - to attach to front rack; rear: hole for l-bracket to
attach to seatstay bridge, holes for Dutch fender light (light not
included) - $20

Contact offlist if interested in anything.

Re: [RBW] 700X42C Tire Recommendation

2016-09-07 Thread Robert Keal
No sweat!

Cool thing about the Shikoros is they aren't overly heavy even though they
have flat protection in both the tread and sidewalls. I've only ridden a
couple hundred miles on mine at most, but I'm more than pleased with the
ride quality.

Thanks D, B, & G! I haven't heard of the Conti Speed Rides or the Soma
Shikoros... thanks for putting them on the radar! Forgot about the Gravel
Kings, I know they're supposed to be really good. I might not be able to
fit anything with any knobs on it though... that 42mm clearance is going to
be with a round tire measured at the roundest part. Toward the tread it
tapers in.

Wish I could fit those Supremes, Drew! But just off by a smidge. Great deal!

I don't have a picture, but I have a Nitto Campee front rack, which came
with the same attachment for cantis. I originally mounted it on the tandem
with a longer set of stays going to mid fork braise ons. This spring we
repainted the bike and switched from CP to cantis so I don't have a

[RBW] 700X42C Tire Recommendation

2016-09-07 Thread Garth
Consider the Panaracer 700 x 40 Gravel King SK. By all real world accounts
these actually measure 42mm+ with great cush riding them @ 30-40 psi. I have
not bought these myself simply because I don't need new tires, my discontinued
Kenda Kwick Roller EZ-ride tires seem to wear very slowly. I would recommend
these as the 45c measures about 41mm but for some silly reason Kinda dq'd them.
For comparison these roll about as well as 40c Vittoria Hypers but have alot
more volume and cush. The 40c Hypers are not a very volumnious tire.

I like the Soma Shikoros. I switched them out for Jack Browns on my Sam because
I couldn't fit them under my fenders. No flats thus far, and good protection

2016-09-07 Thread drew
I just swapped out 50mm marathon supremes (60$ shipped for the pair) for
continental speed ride 42s.
I like them so far. Wondering how long they'll last and if they'll flat a lot.
Not sure they are stout enough for a tandem.
I find the Marathon supremes to be considerably more cushy than other marathon
versions, little big bens or comparably sized big apples.
