[RBW] Pneu bars...time for MUSA?

2016-12-15 Thread Christopher Murray
I doubt there is anyone in the USA that can do what Nitto does but maybe I'm
wrong. From past comments Grant has made I don't think there is anyone to blame
here. Grant has said previously that they did not have an exclusive agreement
with manufacturers- so the manufacturer (Nitto, MKS, Panaracer, etc) was free
to sell to other people. So who is to blame? Riv/Grant for not getting the
exclusive? The manufacturer for making and selling products? The seller with
the lower prices undercutting Riv? The buyer who buys from the seller with
lower prices (and maybe doesn't even know about the Riv connection)? Or no one?
I'd say no one but I'd also be agreeable to everyone.

Riv is going to do things different now. Hopefully this prevents the issue and
Riv gets the business (and design credit) they deserve.

Cheers!
Chris

I know but they RBW is Pro MUSA. And since NItto is distributing Rivendell
designed products (Panaracer does, too.) to other retailers which is under
cutting Rivendell's business. I thought that those two things would equal
Rivendell maybe going proprietary MUSA bars since they are very pro MUSA
anyway. There must be someone in the USA that can make just as high quality a
bar as Nitto.
Maybe they can patent their bars?

I'm not following. Are some of Riv's handlebar designs showing up under
different names, available from different retailers?

Seems like there's a long history of that, for many, many products (mks grip
king -> lambda, for example), but where Riv has made a concious decision to
accept it when it happens. I wish there was a way to let consumers know where
the idea came from though - especially when Riv pays for the R & D.

I can't imagine them ever using someone other than Nitto for handlebars, though.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Cheviot

Hi Jeremy,
I previously transfered my GP1 Biokork from my Brompton to my Albatross
equipped Atlantis. The grips performed well during my TransAm tour
together with my "Thinny Riding Gloves - Goat leather". The thinny goat
leather gloves grips the GP1 so well that it helped me reduce my grip
pressure on the handlebar. The other day, when I was riding my wife's
Betty equipped with Miesha's Portuguese Tree Cork Grips I experienced my
hand slipping during bumps on the rode.

This made me decide to purchased 2 pairs of Ergon GC1 for my other Riv
bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: What are you hauling?

2016-12-15 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Hey Ken,

Yeah the Albatross to Noodle transfer on the Saluki took about 2 months of
adjusting, riding, adjusting, riding... really struggled with getting the
brakes to feel strong enough with the drop levers but I finally got it
dialed in (and added cross levers). Didn't help that during part of that
time I was getting an extended test ride on Jeff L's Surly Troll w/
hydraulic disk brakes which definitely messed with my expectations on
proper stopping power. But I'm happy with the way the Saluki is set up now
and finally wrapped up the bars a couple weeks ago.

The Bombadil doesn't get loaded up as much, since mid-spring time or so
it's mostly been setup for singletrack riding. But it would certainly take
the racks and load just as well as the Saluki. It has been Nitto dirt
drops all year but given the Saluki upright to drops conversion I decided
to try out the Jones H Loop bars on the Bomba... just hooked it up last
night actually and need to do some fine tuning before I report back on that
one. Should be fun.

The fact that these bikes can be made to be anything is a blessing and a
curse for someone like me who is constantly tinkering with the bikes. On
the good side they can be made to do just about ANYTHING pretty darn well,
on the bad side I'm always left wondering 'what if I changed xyz...' :)
 Good problems to have.

Tony

As I've learned buying and selling a few bikes there's definitely less
demand for shorter 54cm and below sized bikes (especially on this list).
I've always had incredible luck with craigslist, but i have the benefit of
being the bay area. Might need to try ebay and suck up the fees to reach a
wider audience. The price is great considering what a new new one costs.

The other thing I'm speculating is that not many people that size and shorter

Re: [RBW] Re: Extreme long johns...

2016-12-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I once meant to create a dickey out of something like Tyvek, but ended up
with a couple cut from old merino turtlenecks; very useful for those in
between days, where a merino base layer plus an outer wool layer is not
quite enough. I find I need neck protection in cold weather, otherwise I
quickly get a sore throat and thence a cold, and those dickeys, or a
cut-down Royal Stuart scarf, are very nice. One benefit from these is that
they are very easily removed when the temps climb, as they do rapidly and
widely here in the high desert -- it's not unusual to start the morning in
the 20s and top out in the 60s.

But for wind blocking, I found a very lightweight L Garneau vest, about 30%
mesh, at half price at a LBS a couple of years ago, and this, with its high
collar, is also a very nice supplement to a wool base layer on warmer but
not quite warm enough days; it also has the statutory rear pockets, the
absence of which makes life so miserable.

Today, leaving the house, 45*F, and partly cloudy (believe me, at 5K feet,
the radiation of even the winter sun makes a huge difference), a merino ls
jersey under a light ls Road Holland merino + plastic jersey with full zip
that I use as a very light jacket, and with high zip neck, was just right.
Getting home, 50*f and the combo was just getting a wee bit warm after I
was fully warmed up.

Back when I did serious commuting mileage, often leaving the house at 20*F
or so, I found that 3 layers of wool, or perhaps 2 with a gilet, kept me
warm but also kept me free of sweat. OTOH, before I wised up, I'd ride ~13
miles into work in just 2 layers, a thickish Kucharik ls jersey under a
Cannondale nylon riding jacket, and arrive soaked in sweat. Aggressive (if
not necessarily fast) riding. But layers of wool, including the base layer
-- not at all.

One project now on my long list of projects to procrastinate about, is to
get an inexpensive mesh undershirt and see what it does.

I wear a wind-blocking vest over lots of wool layers when riding in the
cold. And I carry a survival blanket and hand warmers in my bag in case I
have a flat or mechanical problem while out in the cold.

My current favorite base layer is some aramid long johns I got when I flew
in the Air Force in South Dakota. They offer are warm and wick sweat
well. If I wear merino next to my skin, it holds too much sweat and chills
my core. This is for sometimes-aggressive riding on a fat bike in temps
down to about 10 F.

Re: [RBW] Re: Extreme long johns...

2016-12-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I just read that the Inuit would forego base layers in all but the most
horrendously cold weather, because it tended otherwise to trap moisture. Of
course, their outer garments were in respect of heat management,
unsurpassed.

Patrick: you said: 0F: mesh, cotton flannel, Ventile jacket climbing =
perfect. Then you said: -25F: mesh, cotton flannel, windy, *no jacket*
 climbing

You know the old roadie trick: stuff a used Gazzetto della Sport under your
jersey for the descent.

Patrick Moore, whose rides haven't dropped below 28*F this season, and that
very briefly, so what do I know?

My take is when there's a serious deal to be had, the first person there with
cash takes it. Frustrating to not have a clearly communicating seller for sure.

Still can't believe the deal I got on my 55 cheviut. $700 complete...and 100%
not stolen

[RBW] Re: Extreme long johns...

2016-12-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
Learning curve of fishnet long johns follow-up:

-- Wiggy's nylon is stunningly effective and unfortunately rough. Mojo's
Brynje merino version will soon be swimming the Atlantic and riding the
burro my way. I asked Rhodri at http://www.nordiclife.co.uk about their
synthetic fabric and he said it would 1) last a bit longer and 2) stink up
within a day or two. Merino it is! Grin.

I continue to test in in these variable conditions we are having, from warm
(43˚F today) to cold (-2˚F is as low as I've gone so far this year). Here's
what I've learned so far with the Wiggy's nylon fishnet top:

-- 0˚F: fishnet, cotton flannel, Ventile Cotton Analogy jacket was perfect
climbing the pass, and chilly descending the pass. Ideally I need to put on
another insulative layer before going down hill. But that is stunningly
little to wear at 0˚F vs. close knit base layer.
-- 25˚F, 10-20 mph wind up the pass: same as above, less the jacket
climbing. Donning the jacket before heading down was perfect. Easy to
underestimate the extremity layers needed, as I took too light a hat and
gloves for the windchilled descent (5˚F with windchill).

There seems a different skill/knowledge set for wearing these, as
ventilation is the key to temp regulation and moisture management. I'm
still trying to figure that all out. The idea is the be slightly cool when
working via ventilating, then zip up/add insulation/windblocking when not
working and/or facing increased winds.

So far, loving the new system and am staying warmer more easily despite my
bumbling learning curve! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Yeah selling on CL is no fun at all. Between the scammers, the low ballers, the
information seekers with no intention to buy, and flakes it really does get a
bit frustrating! So sadly I go all Bird in hand when selling. Doesn't feel so
nice but darn... My experience selling a Rivemdell has always seemed worse VERY
low baller and info seeker heavy!

Love the flipped Sparrow bars - has a good old-school feel to it. Have you
tried the Ergon grips designed for the swept-back bars (GC1 I think)? Not
sure there's all that different from the standard ones, but I really like
them on a MAP/Ahearne bar mounted relatively far and low as a compromise vs
a drop bar configuration.

Re: [RBW] Re: What are you hauling?

2016-12-15 Thread Tony DeFilippo
The guys! The rear dyno actually goes internal via the down tube, through
the bottom bracket and out the base of the seat tube. Then it goes inside
the fender to the light. Both holes I drilled prior to getting frame re
coated and both are through 'lug windows'... I thought about whether to do
it for a couple of months but I'm glad I did, never liked the exterior
routing on other bikes and full dyno lighting is so pleasant.

The bike lock around the Sackville mounting bracket worked really well and
was a first for me on this ride. Usually it lives at work on the rack or
inside the rear bag but it got bumped by the groceries.

Funny you ask about riding in or not today and tomorrow as I was just
mulling it over now... I'm going to drive today at least. I'm getting over
a cold that had me home from work yesterday and while I feel better I'm
going to pass at least for today.
