[RBW] Roadeo Sizing Help

2016-12-19 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
Grant is The Man. But here is another data point. I am 6ft with an 89cm PBH.
Grant chose a 61.5cm Road standard for me. And I ride a 62cm Legolas and a 60cm
Quickbeam (with some dirt riding intended for the Q). I wish the Q was 62 too
but it's fine.

[RBW] Mix 'n match gearing

2016-12-19 Thread RonaTD
I found on the 'net some interesting (in a nerdy, arithmetic sort of way) info
on shifter cable pull, derailer actuation ratios, and cog spacing. Naturally, I
loaded it all into a spreadsheet for fun. After looking at many different
permutations, I came upon one that seemed fairly useful. If you have a nice
SunTour rear derailer and you'd really like to use it with more modern, indexed
shifting, it works perfectly with a Shimano 9-speed shifter and a Shimano/SRAM
8-speed cassette. I just tried it out on my Riv ATB and, sure enough, the
spacing is exactly right. Since I'm a big fan of Shimano 9-speed bar-end
shifters, and my ATB has a nice XC Pro rear derailer, it's a very happy
coincidence for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

Bill, I rode a friend's 25" Jones Plus on singletrack, and it felt fine, but
larger than I needed. I'm 5'11" with a 76cm SH, and would definitely go for the
24". Fun bike. Also have a Hunqa. Different for sure! Jones is more dirt
oriented, but you strangely sit straight up on it. It feels like you are skiing
through the woods. Way different than any MTB geometry I've ever encountered
(not saying much). I liked it, but could climb better on my hard tail Kona ti
bike. I think the Jones would make a killer backcountry bikepacker. I think the
Hunqa is more versatile, however.

just don't generally find I have that much stuff to carry. $285 new plus
shipping and wait time. $225 shipped?

Also a B17 Special saddle I bought for my Riv and used for about 1.5 years
on weekly 10-20 mile rides. Has a nice honey color to it now. Looks and
feels barely broken in if at all. Can send some pictures if interested.
$190 new on amazon, though looks like Brooks doesn't carry this any more.
$120 shipped?

Local pickup in the bay area.

Thanks! Seems like you guys had an amazing trip there. Thanks for sharing

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-19 Thread iamkeith
I have a regular 29 Jones spaceframe, and can't comment on the Plus other
than to extrapolate (Jeff intended the two bikes - 24" Plus is equivalent
to the 23" 29 - to encourage/accommodate the same fit and riding position).
I'm 6'-2" with proportionally long torso / short legs.

Regarding Bill's questions about fit:

As Eric said, the original production 29 bike was designed to fit Jeff
himself, who is 6'-0" tall. An inch or so either way, accounting for
unique body proportions, is a pretty easy fit process. For those beyond
that - particularly at the extreme ends of the fit range, it is most often
a fairly intensive process to get things dialed in. Though Jeff has a
pretty good handle on it and recommends a good starting point, anecdotal
evidence will tell you that people spend a lot of energy and a lot of time
on this. Experimenting with layback or straight seatposts, different stem
lengths, more or fewer stem spacers, different handlebars if the Loop
doesn't jive and, as dstein said, a bottom bracket that gives you 1/2" of
fore/aft or up/down fine tuning and effectively changes the frame size.
And then you can dial in the steering to accommodate your final weighting
balance, by playing with head tube shims.

I have it set up now where I can, in a few minutes, swap in a different
seatpost/saddle and stem to fit my 5'5" wife reasonably well. If she has
her druthers, this is the bike she will choose when we go mountain biking,
so I'm excited about the small Plus as a possibility for her. (it is a
spaceframe design, by the way, which makes it even better.)

However while the bike *does* work well for people of different sizes,
what nobody ever really says is *that they each experience it in entirely
different ways!* It's basically a completely different bike for each
person. For people under about 5'-10" or so, you often hear them describe
how they feel centered and ride "in the bike." For those over 6'-1" like
me, nothing could be further from accurate. In my case, a big seatpost
extension combined with a shallow angle means that I basically sit directly
above the rear axle - not "in" the bike at all. And it really doesn't work
to fight this, either, because of the relatively short top tube and close
cockpit. Even with the slack angle, I had to use even more setback than I
was accustomed to.

For me and for how I use the bike - as a true mountain/trail bike - I
really like the fact that my chainstays are effectively shorter. Wheelies,
jumps, bunny hops, steep descents, tight turns are what it's about. So,
while the comfort and riding position and low center of gravity are very
akin to a Rivendell, the rest of its personality is extremely different.

So, as to the OP's question of whether there is room for both a Jones and a
Hunq:

I say "heck, yeah!" The Hunqapillar is and has been since it was released,
STILL my dream bike.Variety is the spice of life, so you just need to
set them up differently. The issue for me though, and why I've never
gotten a Hunq., is that for the way I want to set up and use *that* bike, I
really expect it to fit perfect WITHOUT making accommodations. More of my
all-day, everyday, touring, town, short road rides, light trail, shopping,
picnic, camping, loaded touring, keep-it-for-the-rest-of-my-life bike. So
I want it in MY size.

I always tell people that if a Riv fits you well, buy it! Fit trumps
everything and is not always as automatic as you'd hope.

(I admittedly might have a problem though, because I want a 25" Plus, too)

Re: [RBW] Jones and Hunq

2016-12-19 Thread David Stein
I second to call Jeff.

>From what I remember they only had one size for a long time, the 24", which
was meant for a wide variety of riders. The more you raise the seat the
longer the effective top tube becomes, and from there it's a matter of
saddle position and stem length to dial it in. I think some taller riders
pushed for the 25". And this is the first I've heard of the 23".

I talked w/ Jeff and based off what he told me he directed me to a certain
stem length and cut the steerer. Haven't messed with it since I unboxed it.

On Bill's point of road vs. mtn biking I think the same fit principles
apply for the Jones either way. It's not a drop bar road bike. With road
bikes and drop bars there is a lot more fine tuning to get comfortable as
you're leaned over in an aero position with a lot of weight on the
handlebars and things you want to account for for speed. There's a lot more
versatility w/ the Jones w/ the ec bottom bracket, loop bars, etc. As I'm
not the best at explaining things, call Jeff ;)

Bill asked how folks are fit for Jones bikes.

The website says riders 5'7" to 6'2" fit the 24" medium. It also says in
many places that buyers are encouraged to call Jeff to talk specifics. So
in the end, I think Jeff would say, "Call me to discuss fit." Guessing
wouldn't be a great move considering a bad guess costs a pretty penny.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
Eric explained how the Jones designs accommodates a range of riders in a
single size, and Geeter pointed out that there's a Small (23") to go with
the Medium (24") and the Large (25").

That's all very good, but still not what I was asking. I was asking how
one chooses a size or how Jones recommends a size. How does it work?
Since nobody has answered that, I'm guessing that it's probably exactly
like I bought my mountain bike. I looked at some numbers on the Niner
webpage and I guessed. I built it up and I changed the things I felt like
I needed to change. That's pretty much how all mountain bikes work, and
it's totally fine. Nobody "gets fit" on a mountain bike. Guess, buy, and
ride. Tweak if needed, and guess again if you got it wrong. The more
guesses you've made the more likely your next guess will be a good one.

The reason I asked how it worked is that Jones bikes are being lauded as
surprisingly good road bikes. Road bike fitting is more prescriptive, and
road riding involves sitting there in basically the same position on the
bike for hours on end, so it kind of needs to fit to be comfortable.
Mountain biking is much more of a dynamic activity. You are moving around
with the bike in completely different ways, and so 'fit' is not really a
concrete defined thing. If the Jones is a bike that people use for long
road rides, I wondered if the fitting was prescriptive and precise like
road bike fitting, or was more of a 'guess and tweak' process, like
mountain bikes. Sounds like it is more the latter, which is fine.

[RBW] Re: Sam Frame Spacing

2016-12-19 Thread Timothy Hurley
Bill, thank you for taking the time to give such detailed advice. What you said
makes sense. I measured everything, flipped the wheel and measured again.
Everything was the same both times. So I've established the wheel (it's true)
is dished corrrctly and thus not the problem.

The wheel was correctly seated in the dropouts both times. Everything was
centered at the seat stays both times. And both times the wheel was almost
touching the right chain stay yet had plenty of room on the left side.

The only thing I can figure is that there's an issue with the frame. Everything
looks straight and I've never crashed it anyhow. This bike has searved me very
well over the years and rides great so it's really only a problem if I wanted
to put 40mm or up tires on it. I was happy with 35's until I discovered this
group last year! Haha

Thank you again for helping me obsess about my bike.

the speed thing has me a little giddy with anticipation.

Right now I'm kinda leaning toward 52-44-26 or maybe 52-42-26on my
all-rounder's a 42-28 double seem to suit me perfect (essentially the 42
for most everything on-road and the 28 for bail-out and trails. My
assumption is the 52 will act as a "fun factor" ring for downhills.

Some folks go nuts on tandem large chainring size -- 54 or 56 is not too

especially on a bike like the HHH. Even with a 48 we'll still be going mid

[RBW] Re: Sam Frame Spacing

2016-12-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
Timothy

Step 0: your rear wheel is true
Step 1: with the bike on the ground, open the QR so you are sure the frame
is fully dropped down on the vertical dropouts. Close the QR
Step 2: measure clearances at all four points: both sides at the
chainstays and both sides at the seatstays, write those down
Step 3: remove the rear wheel and put it back in backwards, making super
sure that the wheel is fully in the dropouts again. close the QR
Step 4: make the same four measurements

If you don't have a good way to do measurements, fine, eyeball it.

IF your wheel is exactly centered relative to the seatstays both times,
then the wheel is dished correctly. IF the wheel is centered exactly
relative to the seatstays both times and is offcenter towards the right
chainstay both times, then your rear end has an imperfection of some kind.

IF your wheel position changed both at the chainstays and at the seatstays
when you flipped it around, then your wheel is not perfectly dished.
Consider taking care of that and repeating. The amount it moved is double
the amount your wheel is out of dish. For example, if your wheel is 2mm
out of dish, it'll "move" 4mm when you flip it.

IF your wheel changed in position at the chainstays but not at the
seatstays, or vice versa then you are not being careful enough when you are
getting the wheel seated in the dropouts. Repeat until you are getting
consistent results.

Let me know if you need help walking through this.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Sizing Help

2016-12-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
I'm 5'10" with a 86cm PBH 75.5cm saddle height. If I were to buy a Roadeo
it would definitely be a 59, and I would most likely run a 10cm stem
extension. Grant is right that if you want your Roadeo to look kind of
like a 1980s racing bike or a snazzy steel club bike, then a 59 for your
height and PBH could definitely achieve that. If you want to run your bars
up near your saddle height, or are looking for more of that 1950s British
"fist full of post" kind of look, then I imagine you'd be more at home on a
61.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Sizing Help

2016-12-19 Thread Matt B.
You'd have a lot of seat post showing on a 59 but it really depends on how
high you'd want to run your bars relative to saddle (although this is not
so much of an issue nowadays with tallux stems/long quills). Personally I
would go 61 with that pbh, even if the 61 is not immediately available.
It's worth waiting a few months for the right size.

Ha! More thought went into my gear choices that I can to even try to
remember. Now, I don't really think about them, though I've obviously kept
my notes (thank you Evernote!) which helps when folks ask me gearing
questions. However, the experience in riding is No thought goes into
gearing because I only have two gear choices and I'm either going up or
down. Until you experience the freedom of that, it is really hard to
understand. Like you, I was puzzled and intrigued from the outside, until I
was on the inside. Grin.

Thanks, Tony. I've since removed the fenders (it's not a bike I would
choose for rainy days, fenders or not), and I've added a new model Cyo and
Sanyo bb dynamo (I do use it for short trips to the store).

The M-bar is just tolerable for rides of up to 10 miles or so; my left
hand starts hurting about about mile 2, but it's tolerable for up to 10
miles non-stop. The M bar is certainly better than the bullhorns it
replaced.

Question: someone on this list, or p'raps it was the boblist, offered to
sell me a stem extension meant particularly for the Dahon. If that person
reads this, will he please contact me?

I think that the M bar would be more comfortable if it were a little
further from the saddle.

They are TBD still, rumor is there may be a Silver crankset option...but that's
only rumor. If that's the case I'll jump on it. If not, I may go with
Sugino's with bare arms or go nuts and get Herse tandem cranks. Either of
those options have room for chainrings a la carte, so I'm curious what
experienced tandem riders default to for an "all rounder". My guess is a triple
but I'm most interested in how big people go for the big chainring.

2016-12-19 Thread Max S
Andrew,

I've been interested in a Jones for awhile... let me know if you're interested
in a road bike for Jones trade. I've 57-59 cm road frames/bikes.

Re: [RBW] What are you hauling?

2016-12-19 Thread Tony DeFilippo
J - that is quite a train you have going there! I've wondered what it would be
like to put my tandem with a kid trailer in tow. We're the two trailers locked
together from a swing perspective or could both articulate?

Patrick that Dahon is sharp looking! Love the woody fenders and clean
moustache bars in particular.
