[RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

2017-02-14 Thread Hugh Smitham
Been there done that, meaning this type of discussion has popped up before
and am glad to see a huge brouhaha hasn't developed. Personally Glen thanks
for the heads up I bought two pair a silver pair for my A. Homer a bike
which I paid Riv the full freight and a black pair of VP-001 for my New
Bantam Adventure bike. Free shipping and both cost less than a single pair
from Riv which I just noticed they've lowered from the usual $80 to $68.

For the record I don't shop at Walmart, try and shop locally as best I can.
Also for the current build I'm doing most of the parts wouldn't even be
available at a LBS. And the one's I've gone to have a shitty attitude.
Rivendell does have a great attitude but on some things the markup is too
much. My wife is in retail and all the little one's are hurting.

I will buy from Riv in the near future.

[RBW] Re: New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-14 Thread dougP
That one was "worn out" quite a while ago, actually. While it's satisfying
to eke out that last mile, tires worn down to the casing become very easy
to flat, and depending on the situation potentially dangerous. Replacing
before you've squeezed out the last mile can be done at home at your
convenience. Even spendy treads like Compass beat the cost & hassle of a
visit to the ER should a tire flat at the wrong moment.

Sorry to be such a downer about this but there is a counterpoint to the
"you done good" side of wearing out tires.

Wearing out a tire to the casing should be worn like a badge of courage.
RESPECT. I'm proud of you, and glad it didn't fail far from home. Most

[RBW] Re: Rivendell tandem builds

2017-02-14 Thread Julian Westerhout
Jim,

Like Bill, I will likely build ours up as a Clem-istic tandem.
Velocity/Rich wheelset with generator hub. Silver cranks. V-brakes (I'd
actually prefer cantilevers, but the way the rear seat cluster is built
looks like it will preclude that without a lot of bodging). Suntour ratchet
thumbshifter, low gears. It will have fenders -- we'll use it both as a
town bike and for riding gravel trails in WI and MO (and possibly
elsewhere). We'll have a front rack -- either a Gamoh or a Nitto/Wald combo
for a shopsack.

I'm expecting that soon Riv will reveal some possible build package
options.

I owned an orange one with sidepulls. It was made in Taiwan.

The workmanship from Taiwan was excellent, by the way. On both the orange

But as far as the canti ones are concerned and where they were made, I can't
say with certainty that none of those were made in Taiwan. I know the 64's were
not.

[RBW] New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-14 Thread panog
Well, you got your fair use out of this tire! In a pinch a tire boot made out
of a folded dollar bill may be enough to take you home so you avoid the
walking. When you replace the tire consider cutting off a 4" long section,
minus the beads, to carry in your repair pack as a tire boot for future use,
just in case.

James,

I'm not sure about this, i have a canti-orange from this era and i feel
like the fit and finish are not waterford--or what i would expect from
waterford, paint in particular.

Also i don't remember the oranges ever coming in sidepull.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell tandem builds

2017-02-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
I'm thinking about it as a Clementine/Clem Smith for two. It'll have Bosco
bars, at least initially. It will have Silver cranks. It will have
Rich-built wheels with a dyno front hub and a disc-capable rear. It'll
have V-brakes, probably some vintage parallelogram style Shimano XT ones
that I have on hand. I'll use thumbshifters of some kind and probably run
a 12-36 9sp cassette. I'm sure Riv will have a tire that they want us to
consider and I'll run that. I won't run fenders because it'll be a
fairweather bike. I haven't decided what to do in the rack department, but
I already have a Nitto Big front with a Wald basket that came off my
Appaloosa, that I might run.

2017-02-14 Thread James Warren

Also, regarding the relationship between brake style and where it was made,
don't extrapolate what I said (about canti frames being from Wisconsin for the
orange frames of 2010) to the very first green ones that came before 2010.
Those first generation Hillbornes were all canti frames and I believe all made
in Taiwan.

Rivendell is somewhat active on Instagram. Ocean Air Cycles and Swift
Industries post almost daily. I just happen to be waiting on three very
expensive deliveries, and all three should be 'any day now'.

1. Ocean Air Cycles Docena handlebar bag, made by Swift Industries
2. Hubbuhubbah tandem
3. 650B Atlantis

I don't want to be a pain calling and/or emailing all the time, so I just
check instagram. I figure Rivendell will post photos when they get 50
tandem frames in. I figure either Swift or Ocean Air will post something
when the Docena bags get shipped. The anticipation is part of the fun, but
I still want the gratification as well. It would almost be bad if they all
arrived at the same time.

Interesting update regarding VP Components. As of late we, as a shop, have

shop for having little or no interest in controlling the pricing of their
products or protecting the best interests of local specialty retail. We
are a micron blip on the radar as far as having an affect as one
shopbut. if most brick and mortars show that they carethen who
knows (it helps me sleep at night).

Anyways, VP Components responded...PROMPTLY (which is rare)on a Sunday.
They care!!! Apparently this was part of their shutdown of US
warehousing. To them, all of their distributors were placing large enough
orders to satisfy factory-direct fulfillment. So their US operations will
now be warranty, R, service support etc only. They indicated that this
would be a small pricing anomaly, they were aware of it and that normal
pricing would soon return to the market. They also told me the they
offered liquidation pricing to distributors, brick and mortar shops and
finally online parters (in the order).

[RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

2017-02-14 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Sometimes the maker requires a minimum retail price--for a small variety of
good or at least well-intended reasons. VP-001 was one of those, but it's
not the only one, for sure. If (for example) the Min Sell Price (MSP) of X
is $80 and a seller complies because compliance is generally good when you
want to get along with vendors and don't see the relationship as a battle
with winners and losers. When somebody else violates the price thing, and
maybe even sells X for below cost, some buyers will see that as a chance
for irresistible victory, and naturally and for good reasons, will want to
share the love with others. This is the free market, and the chips fall,
etc. Nobody's arguing against a free market or anything.

Yes. I remeasured it yesterday just to make certain. 58 from the center of
the crank to the top of the seat post.

Hi. Just want to clarify the frame measurement. This is a 58cm as measured
by Riv , center of the crank to the top of the seat lug?

That is the most... unique? Rambouillet build I've seen. I love it. I was in
exactly the same situation as you a couple months ago. Couldn't bring myself to
actually let the Ram go.

Good luck, that's a great deal on a wonderful bike.
