[RBW] Re: Sackville Multisack

2017-03-03 Thread LeahFoy
Great points, Joe and John! John, that lithe bag is THE perfect pannier for a
Brompton. Too cute.

I meant to stay with the tan color I already have, but I liked the gray best
and ordered it. I chose the Multisack over the bar tube because it looks more
like a clutch/handbag than the bar tube does. There is nothing better than
buying a new Rivendell bike, but second to that is buying new bags for a
Rivendell bike. I cannot wait.

I used to commute with a Clem with one heavy pannier (Arkel shopping bag
pannier) in the rear, and like you, I never noticed any significant effect
on handling. That was really sweet. And, of course, with those long
chainstays, it's really easy to mount rear bags. I've since switched the
commute to a lighter (and more importantly, shorter wheelbase) frame/bike
with a front basket carrying all my gear, and while I don't like the
handling effects of weight up front like that, I do like having my stuff in
the front for visibility and ease of access. Regarding front bags for the
Wald basket, I've been swapping back and forth between a Swift sugarloaf
bag in waxed canvas, which I love, and a Reload custom-color basket bag,
which holds more and costs less, but is covered in velcro which doesn't mix
well with wool clothing. The sugarloaf is a fantastic option for those of
us with VERY small laptops.

[RBW] PSA: Eroica California Is Coming April 8-9 in Paso Robles, CA

2017-03-03 Thread Jon Spangler
Fellow cyclists and lovers of steel,

As many of you know, the third iteration of Eroica California, EC 2017, is
coming on April 8-9 in Paso Robles, CA. Like all of the worldwide Eroica
rides, Eroica California
tries to replicate the feel and the effort required in the Grand Tours of
the 1920s and 1930s, including routes that include roughly 30% unpaved
(dirt and gravel) roads.
There are four (4) routes of 38, 67, 85, and 120 miles. The two longer
routes take riders to Cambria on the Pacific Coast.

http://www.eroicacalifornia.com

(PLEASE NOTE: recent heavy rains have washed out some roads so the routes
shown on the website may be modified, depending on the ability of county
road crews to
make repairs in time.)

Events on Saturday include a vintage bicycle concours, technical and
history seminars, a large vintage bike and parts swap, a vintage-era movie,
and a Tuscan dinner prepared by
Tuscan chefs brought in by the Eroica Gaiole (Italy) organizers for this
ride.

Organizer Wesley N Hatakeyama and the local Hospice of San Luis Obispo
County team are working hard to assure another wonderful event. Eroica
rides are open to anyone who rides a
bike from 1987 or earlier that utilizes (mostly) steel frame (vintage or
"keeper of the flame" bikes like Rivendells, of course). All bikes must use
"vintage" friction shifting (no SIS or 'brifters)
and traditional caged pedals--with or without cleats and toe straps (no
click-in pedals like Looks, SPDs, Speedplays, etc.). *Wool vintage jerseys
and shorts are encouraged but not required. *

For a complete listing of the rules and regulations, visit:
 https://www.eroicacalifornia.com/regulation

If the website information leaves you with questions, please email them to
 i...@eroicacalifornia.com.

We hope to see you in Paso Robles next month!

[RBW] Re: Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2017-03-03 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
With an 87.5, in most cases that would put your SH around 76, 77cm, which
would be fine for 60cm, even non-sloping. 54-55 would generally be way
small for that PBH, even for a racer. Maybe part of the discrepancy is you
are measuring center to center 55cm, which would be more like 56-57 center
to top, depending on the tubing. That would make more sense. Rivendells are
measured center to top.

[RBW] Re: How are some Appaloosa owners loading up their bikes for commuting?

2017-03-03 Thread Ed Carolipio
Sorry, no photos ATM but my setup isn't much different than photos at the
riv site.

For the front I'm running the "riv standard" Wald 137 basket tie wrapped to
a Nitto front rack. I've got the M18 but I'd recommend the Mark's. The R14
probably would be overkill for that size basket. I got a medium riv
Sackville where I keep the spare tube, tools, pump, anything I need to
reach easily (badge, locker key, phone), and any layering items (jacket,
vest, gloves). The Sackville has two tabs: I loop velcro straps through
those onto the basket. I've got a bike locker at work, but taking and
lugging the Sackville out is pretty easy if I need to lock up the bike.

For the rear, I used to have the Pletscher Clem rack (with the pannier bars
and light tab) but now am running the medium Nitto 32R. I'm using the rack
tab on top of the seat stay, toward the front. The medium can't use the
rearmost rack tab since the deck hits the tire. The large 32R probably
would work on my 51cm bike using that rearmost tab. The Clem rack worked
fine, and I really liked it's wide flat deck. I switched to R32 simply for
the bling: the performance for commuting seemed the same.

For my primary bag, I use an Ortlieb Commuter bag
(https://ortliebusa.com/product/commuter-bag-ql3-1/) with the QL3.1 mount.
That carries a laptop, a change of clothes, work papers, thermos, and a
snack. The nice thing about the QL 3.1 is the back of the bag is flat and
doesn't have any hardware sticking out. Also, on-and-off for the bag is
super quick. The disadvantage is having to mount some hardware on the rack
that needs to be removed in order mount any other bag on that side of the
rack.

One issue I had with other bikes in running this particular setup in the
rear was the offset load - one heavy pannier on the left side - noticeably
affected handling. That's not a problem with the Appaloosa. Also, I've
experimented with multiple pannier bags and didn't have a problem with heel
strike, nor did I really need to make extreme adjustments to the pannier
hooks to get the bag to work right.

I can't believe the half-mitts didn't sell that well.I mean, I believe it

usable. Best thing next to trigger mittens for riding a bike below 40F, or
down to the teens or 20s with an extra layer. The stock stitching does
come undone eventually, but I love mine and plan to repair them until they
are dust but would gladly sew together more once that happens.

[RBW] Recovering from Ankle Surgery

2017-03-03 Thread BenG
I changed my '72 Sports Tourer from 27" to 700C when the soft old spokes
started breaking. I liked the Maillard hubs, slotted like Phil Rivy's, and the
14-34 freewheel was perfect, so I cut out the spokes, polished up the hub
components, and shipped them to the best wheelbuilder in the land. For a fair
price he assembled the hubs and built high-tension 700C wheels that are still
dead true. The original centerpull brakes were thick around the shoe post
slots, so I used an endmill to lengthen the slots to reach the rims. Barely
fits 35mm Paselas at the chainstays.

Re: [RBW] Silver or green Joe?

2017-03-03 Thread Sky Coulter
I'm glad folks seem to be preferring the green, 'cause the silver/cream combo
is exactly the color scheme I want. Unfortunately, i just bought a specialized
sequoia, so will have to wait a while and hope the 58cm remains in stock.

Although i would want to run drops on it and it seems there is also a consensus
that that might not be a wise choice. From the stack and reach numbers, i
think it should be fine though.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Multisack

2017-03-03 Thread Surlyprof
Leah,

I bought one recently to use as small pannier on a Brompton for
foldability. (
https://www.flickr.com/photos/129545862@N03/albums/72157676942696083
)

Really nicely built and detailed (leather details, pockets and connection
points on bottom and both sides for lots of fastening versatility). Good
looking, too. I found it to work really well for a Ulock and my lunch
(5"x5"x1.5" container and some other things). I just used it yesterday on
my Hillborne's Albastache bars. It connected pretty well but would
probably work even better on bars with less curve such as Boscos, Chocos
and Albatross. The one thing I would consider doing is swapping out the
buckle straps for something with an easier release such as snaps, fastex
or, dare I say, velcro. With a phone an wallet in it, it would be nice to
be able to just pop it off when I wanted run into a store or coffee shop.
I always liked that detachable pocket feature on the medium and large
saddlesacks.

[RBW] Sackville Multisack

2017-03-03 Thread Joe Bernard
I bought the first one, which, amusingly, is pictured on the Riv site on the
Appaloosa I also ended up buying. It's a good bar bag for stuff you want to get
to quickly like phone, wallet, your pepper spray, keys, energy bar and
warmer/cooler gloves. There's two pocket's on the front, but I never seem to
need them. They're too small for my huge phone, but would be good for ID and
credit card if you wanted to go without a purse or wallet.

Bottom line: It's a great bag, but be aware that the Sackville Bar Tube does
everything the MultiSack does if you don't need pockets, and is easier to take
off for running into the store 'cause hook-and-loop instead of buckles. I have
both and tend to use the Tube more often.

On my 15+ year old Atlantis I've had the following:

Drops
Mustache
Bullmoose
Straight mountain
Bosco
Albastache
Albatross
Bosco Bullmoose

None were ditched due to lack of comfort. Most of the changing above was for

I'm also concerned about the frame size. I bought this one 'cause the
price was really, really good and the frame was in excellent shape. It's a
60cm, and for most bikes I ride something in the 54-55cm range (my PBH is
87.5 or so). However, Riv recommends a 59 or 61cm AHH for my PBH, so I'm
hoping that this Expedition will fit somehow.

[RBW] Re: Proposal: Sew-it-yourself Half-Mitts

2017-03-03 Thread drew
i think it's a great idea, though probably not a financially viable one. i
doubt that if the finished versions didnt sell that well, than a
sew-it-yourself version would do much better.

i live in los angeles and have no need for them, but i'd buy the kit just
to have an undaunting sewing project.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis now redundant?

Interesting. Conversely, I rode my Atlantis with drops for over a decade.
When I began having hand issues, I changed over to upright bars, using the
same stem. The bike still fits like a glove, and my hand issues are long
gone.

[RBW] Proposal: Sew-it-yourself Half-Mitts

2017-03-03 Thread Bob B
I'm love my MUSA Mitts, and it was disappointing to see that they are
likely going to be discontinued. I use them every day to commute in New
York. Amazingly, they're all I need down to about 20–25 degrees F.

It occurred to me that MUSA mitts seem simple enough construction-wise that
they could make good sew-it-yourself kits, wherein RBW would sell pre-cut
fabric with black thread and a segment of bungee cord, with instructions.
People would be free to tweak the template to customize fit. I made a
comment to this effect on Grant's Blahg post about them

.

I admit the idea is far fetched, and maybe even dumb! However, its not
without precedent. Sew-it-yourself kits had a moment in the 70s/80s in the
outdoor sports market (i.e.; Frostline Kits
).

But just out of pure curiosity, I wanted to put it to the group. Would you
buy em? Would you sew them? Would they be more viable, business-wise?

[RBW] How are some Appaloosa owners loading up their bikes for commuting?

I plan to run a front basket, but wondering how you guys run loads for

R14 or Marks rack with a saddlebag, but also see the convenience in the

I was not speaking of the Tourguard version, but rather the unbelted

My opinion, obviously. No rolling drum tests were performed in the

the Paselas w. Tourguard for now. The folding bead tires are not
egregiously heavy. My experience , YMMV.

[RBW] Shimano R701 STI levers for sale

2017-03-03 Thread stevef
I have for sale a pair of lightly used Shimano R-701 STI road levers, 2X10
speed, older exposed shift cable-models. They work great and aren't
scratched up much, just a small scuff on one lever tip. They're the short
reach model made for smaller hands, with Ultegra level internals. Available
for pick up in the Lansing, MI area, or will ship for a bit more money.
Looking for $100 or best offer.

I also have a scuffed but functional Ultegra rear derailer and 105 front
derailer to match, for another $40 or so. And an 11-32 cassette, STX
level, I believe, for another $20 or so. Package offers welcome!

Thanks, Steve

[RBW] Re: Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2017-03-03 Thread Dan
Kevin, I have an '83 Expedition (65cm) that has 73.5/73.5 angles and a
surprisingly lively ride. Moreso than the 60cm HIllborne I owned briefly.
However, with a rear load my Expedition sways quite noticeably when you're
pedaling hard. Moving the load amidships and upfront makes it behave much
better. Not sure if some of this is due to the large frame, but that's my
experience anyway.  I use the bike primarily for commuting and I love it;
it feels fast and comfortable.

[RBW] Re: Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2017-03-03 Thread Ryan Fleming
Those Miyatas were and still are excellent touring bikes and very well-
made. I saw a couple of them when I rode with a touring club in the 80's.
Nice bikes as were the early Specialized Expeditions. Touring Cannondales (
I owned one T700, I think) were great for loaded touring too I think
perhaps the 80's were a golden age for touring bikes. On another thread
we've talked about run what you brung , but a purpose-built touring bike is
really a pleasure

I can tell you, they do a meticulous packing job. Everything is neatly
stowed and very well-protected and I am sure every bike that Rivendell

Re: [RBW] Re: New tires, perhaps?

2017-03-03 Thread Ryan Fleming
Have to say, I am still a big fan of the Paselas( been using them for about
10 years) , especially for commuting. They are rugged but fine-riding
tires. I did buy 2 sets of Compass McLure Passes to replace my Pasela 26 X
1.5 tires for my allrounder and X0-1; the X0-1 is one of my commuters. I
got 3 flats in a couple of months with the Compass tires which was a bit of
a PITA but they are more performance oriented.Normally (may the gods not
strike me down for this) I rarely get flats. I love the extralight 700 X 32
Stampede Passes on my road bike but at 78 USD a pop they're definitely not
a practical commuter tire. On my mixte I have 650B X 42 Paselas...thought
about Compass tires but I think I'll stick with the Paselas w. Tourguard
for now. The folding bead tires are not egregiously heavy. My experience ,
YMMV.

[RBW] Re: cool new geometry section on rivbike.com

2017-03-03 Thread Garth
Yes Chris I agree. For those of us who have a real good idea of what works
for us we look at other specific factors of a chart based on our actual
experiences. I don't find pbh very pertinent myself. Everyone has different
wants and needs looks at other factors.

I knew a 60 cm. Bombadil was a real good fit for me when I saw the geometry
chart and it met those expectations ! As much as I'd like another stock
model I have yet to find one that can meet or exceed the Bomba fit .

You know what's funny, despite all the talk of 650b wheels from way back,
Riv only offers them on specific sizes. I know they had one all 650b
model, but with more tires becoming available maybe that will change.
