Re: [RBW] Compass tires for Sam

2017-04-16 Thread James Warren
Barlow Pass and Sam Hillborne are a perfect combo. They ride amazing, and I
don’t even use the extra light casing version.

I’ll bet Soma Supple Vitesse 700x42 would be even better though. They can fit,
so why not?

[RBW] Re: It's going to be a 'long' weekend (or probably a few)

2017-04-16 Thread Ash A
Thanks Philip. I was already feeling like fatter tire is a better match
for the demeanor of this bike. Glad I picked up yours.

"If it won't fit don't force it." and "Let the bike teach you" are very
useful advices. Velo Orange rear hub wouldn't slide into drop outs. First
thought was to force it, thinking that the pain might be extra thick there.
On a second thought, I decided to slightly file the part of the hub that
sits inside the dropouts.

Overall, 40% done. (had thought I would be 80% done this weekend).

Since I did a 650b conversion, I should be one of the ones to say, the
official RBW answer on Rambouillet conversions to 650b is, "the BB would be
too low" but that was said when the normal tire width was a 32.

I think it works fine if you use a 650b-42 like Hetre or equivalent. But,
using a 42 means that your tire height is close to a 700c-25. So, if a
56cm on 700c wheels would be too big, then I would think that the 56 would
still be too big. I mean, yeah, you could use a 32 tire instead, but,
you'll start to run into more of a risk of having pedal strikes. The
reason to do a conversion is to run fatter tires, right? If you're going
to run less than a 32, I'd leave it as a 700c...

Although I love my Bomba, and I usually am putting more miles on my
canti-Rom anymore since I've got it set up for my more usual mixed-terrain
riding, if I was going for a longer road ride I'd be on my Ram in a
heartbeat, it was my first Riv and still my favorite.

It is a beautiful frame: I hope someone snatched it up.

It's on a truck for delivery to a post office box in blaine. I live across
the border in the lower mainland bc, so I'll have to drive down to pick it
up. It should be delivered Tuesday and I'm hoping to get a chance to get
down there Wednesday or Thursday. No need for measurements yet -- I'll be
taking my time to set it up. In the end if the fit doesn't work, then I'll
probably offer the frame up on the list at a buyer's remorse discount. But
I'm still hopeful it'll work out they way I hope.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa build - beta version

2017-04-16 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks! And I do totally agree about the comfort part. I might experiment
more with handlebars, but only to work out more hand positions and possible
lean angles. We have more than our share of wind here so having ways to
work with that might be a good thing. That said, the bike is absolutely
comfortable and fun. I came home from a short ride with the idea of doing
chores or whatever... I came in, I looked at the bike, then outside at the
sun, and just went back out for another ride. The chores waited patiently
until I returned... :>)

Re: [RBW] Appaloosa build - beta version

2017-04-16 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Sky and thanks...

Except for the strong rider part, I may very well resemble your friend! I
laugh even as I type it, but, yeah, I should probably at least go see(!) a
doctor to get their opinion. I have been so lucky most of my life (and am
now 64, so a good run...) that I always believe either self healing or
ignoring the problem is the answer. Worked before, why not now?

Let me know if you want any measurements from my frame or set-up. I also
have a few Nitto stems (including a dirt drop) and bars I could put on to
measure things. I probably would not make it rideable (changing cabling,
etc.) but the measurements could be done. I might do it just to compare
reality with perception. I will say, I had given a little too much weight
to reports of long, long top tubes or so it feels at the moment. Or...
maybe some experiments will prove that out.

I was thinking about your idea... One thing is, if you want bars lower
than saddle height, then the smaller frame will definitely help with that.
Also, and people are welcome to laugh at and correct as needed, and I will
probably misuse terms, but the effective top tube or reach should increase
with more seat post showing. People always remind that a higher stem
height reduces reach so it seems to me a higher seat post should increase
that reach. Maybe negligible, but still...

Anyway, let me know if you want me to measure stuff. When do you get your
frame??

Absolutely, with room to spare. Obvious caveat is the load is higher and
physics and fulcrums and leverage and all that, but that doesn't really
mean anything until you are on trails rather than roads, where a load with

[RBW] Is the Saddlesack, Large, a good container for largish loads over roughish terrain?

2017-04-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Hitherto all my carry-bags have been suspended, so that contents hang from
the attachment point -- be these panniers hanging from a rack, or
saddlebags hanging from the saddle.

My new-to-me Large Saddlesack is my Matthews's current large load carrier;
it will be supported by a rack, strapped thereto with 2 toestraps, and the
straps to the saddle (either directly to rails or by means of VO bolt-on
loops) will merely hold it steady.

Now with the hanging method, the weight of your load itself helps keeps the
bag in place. With the bag supported by the rack platform, it may tend to
send the bag off to one side or another.

So my question is: with Large Saddlesack strapped to rack and held in place
by saddle straps, can I confidently carry a, say 25 lb load over moderately
bumpy dirt roads without fearing loss of load and bags?

I'd rather not go in blind if others have experience of such carriage (and
I'm pointing one of my 11 fingers directly at you, Deacon P!).

Thanks, Patrick Moore

[RBW] Appaloosa build - beta version

2017-04-16 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Even though I am still figuring out some crankset/BB issues on a preferred
set-up, I could not stand it and built the bike up and went riding! This
is very much the beta release, though the basics are certainly there. It
will, I think, end up with Berthoud fenders, racks (Tubus Cosmo rear, Nitto
27f up front), a B LED mounted to the front rack (all from the last of
the nice parts stash) and maybe even, at some point, a fancy Rivendell
saddle bag?!

Current build:
Mavic A719 rims, SON front hub, Phil rear, older but very nice 8-speed
(12-32) cassette, Schwalbe Mondial tires (700x45 (marked 700x47))
Nitto Bullmoose bars, Tektro City brake levers, Silver shifters mounted on
Paul Thumbies, Ergon GP1 cork grips
Old school XT derailleurs
Brooks Cambium C17 saddle - slate
Currently XT M770 triple mountain crankset - eventually will be Sugino AT
triple

I love it!! These words do not come easily but I do believe this is my
last real bike and build. It seems my knee is checking out before the rest
of me so the ongoing succession of bikes I have had will slow or end here.
But here, with the Appaloosa as the last, that seems much better than it
could be.

Impressions so far...

At times it seems like a big bike, especially when getting it out the
door(!), as it is longer and wider than some other bikes. But standover is
perfect though I am accustomed to big bikes. This is a 58cm and I have a
pbh of ~89cm for reference. I would never be able to ride 62cm though, at
least not with the larger tires these bikes call out for. That said, at
times it seems small as well, as it is light on its feet and very
maneuverable even at slow speeds and great for exploring. The Bullmoose
bars help with that I think but I have to say I was surprised to find the
bars so, well, relaxed! I would have thought they would feel a little
more aggressive down as low as they go but they are about level with the
saddle and feel a little higher than that. The Appaloosa is just designed
to get the bars up high without craziness. A Nitto stem with other bars
could probably lower things if needed, not that I need. My other preferred
bars these days are MAP/Ahearne's but I am not so sure they would be much
different than the Bullmoose though experiments are always possible. I am
only guessing but I also believe I could ride this bike with drop bars if I
decided (probably with a dirt drop stem), again not that I think I will.
Good to have options and ways to experiment though.

One thing that really worked out well, at least for the moment, is the
8-speed shifting with the Paul Thumbie mounted Silver shifters. They just
work perfectly, intuitively, and beg the question on how shifting could be
any easier. I have always been a friction shifting guy but these take it
all to a new level perfect for what I wanted. For reference I am using
the special base adapters for using the Silver shifters with the Thumbies.

Anyway, like I said, this is only the first, get it on the road, build.
Apologies for the far less than great pictures as well... more to come and
better I hope. I am lucky enough to have a very special Cheviot as well,
so one day I will get pictures of that bike up to Flickr.

Just so's ya knows, if you didn't already, Grant is what you might call a
creative grammarist, or a poetic speller. I do not know if that applies in
this particular case, but consider, *blug* is not how you spell *blog*--though
it is closer than *blahg*. Here is a recent headline. Try to find the
spelling "errors": "Le SLIVER CARNK & below that, some new joe Appaloosa
photos." If you search his writing, you'll likely find one or two more
examples. But then again, maybe he got it mixed up with Mississippi and all
those homogeneous digraphs. If in fact it was a mistake, Grant is minor
league compared to the 63 most common mispellings of Connecticut found here
. Talk about creative.

Mark "not a Connecticuter, Connecticutian, or Nutmegger, but grew up in
Northport, NY, right across the Long Island Sound from Norwalk, now living
in Beacon, near another long, tidal river" Roland

Drew-
The Carradice bag you have looks to be a Nelson longflap, not a Camper
longflap. Still a good bag, and big, but not Camper big.

The way to tell is on the flaps: The Camper has metal "D" loops for straps:
http://www.carradice.co.uk/bags/saddlebags/originals-camper-longflap-saddlebag

Whereas the Nelson has a leather covered "slot" for straps:

Johnny,

Thanks for the feedback. I have tried about everything, but cannot get
comfortable on it. It is time to move on.

Bill,
It is silver top mounted on a Velo Orange thumb mount. Thanks for the
catch.

The only thing I think you missed was the shifter, which appears to be a
Silver top-mounted on a Paul or IRD thumbie.

That is a nice bike at a really nice price. Way too big for me though.
Interesting that you feel it's too big but the handlebars are set up way
high and far away. To me I think the SH has a long TT length to begin with
(not Clem long but still pretty long) and that bar setup would make the
reach even further. I would think a cockpit change would make it feel way
more comfortable/sized right especially since the seat is not slammed.
 Good luck either way!
