2017-04-21 Thread LeahFoy
Thanks, you guys. I forgot my pepper spray that day, not that I'd have had it
together enough to aim anyway. I should have also thought of the bike as a
shield defense, but I didn't. That would have worked but for the dog in the
Wald.

Scary, Panog! Missing part of its snout? Good heavens. What did the dog do
then? Learned a valuable lesson, no doubt.

Yes, DING DING DING: TBBITW = The Best Bike in the World!

I'm off in the wilds of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Let's hope I
don't have any new encounters with badly behaved animals. A Schnauzer is one
thing, but a mountain lion or black bear? Not even I could spin that into a
funny yarn.

Hey All

I'm looking to set my wife up with a newish/used build for her birthday.

Looking for a 50-52CM frame but would be open to a complete if it's out

Comfort is the priority, so I'm open to anything out there.

Bike will be mostly used around town for leisure rides/commuter with our

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] (maybe) WTB Brooks B68 - Question regarding brooks saddle for Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-21 Thread Patrick Moore
This is sort of an aside, but I swear that, if I ever set up an upright
bike, I'll install a B 190, just because. IIRC, there was an even more
elaborate model in the old days that combined coil and loop springs; my
Hero had a Brooks copy with 3 huge chromed loops at each end rear and at
the nose, but IIRC, there was one that had the loops and coils.

More seriously, I've used the Champion Flyer, the B 67, the B 72, and
possibly the B 68, though I may be confusing that with the Flyer. (I've
also used the B 17, B 17 narrow, and the Pro, as well as various other
leather saddles.) At any rate, I never got much use from the springs and
found that the shape affected comfort much more than "give".

I gather that the B 72 is a mean between the unsprung 68 and the coil
spring 67, sort of.

This might help:

Yes, the Pro's Closet generally sells on consignment and lowers prices over
time when items don't sell. Sometimes, they will offer a fixed payment

I've done a number of transactions with them. They have a good reputation

I ride Lou Lou on my trek 460 conversion and Barlow pass on my Vaya.
They're both extra light and theyre both awesome. They're actually super
tough too. I mean I take my vaya on seriously rocky single track reserved
for mountain bikes and the tires have never given up on me.

Thank you both for the feedback.

Do you think the braking power of the MiniMotos is the same as the
Motolites? I know the Minis are for canti levers and the Motolites are for
long pull levers, but I'm talking about pure braking power. Are they the
same or is the longer Motolites with the longer cable pull more powerful?

2017-04-21 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I will throw in, and someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Pro's
Closet is many times selling a bike on consignment. It could be that
someone brought them the bike and wants a certain amount back from it. PC
considers, then decides if the bike might sell with the owner's price in
mind plus some level of commission. I could be wrong on that but I believe
that to be so. I have also seen their prices lowered when things don't
sell over time. My assumption has always been that the "owner" has agreed
to the drop in price hoping for a sale.

Like I said, I could be wrong, but I was thinking Pro's Closet was, for the
most part, a place for consignments, hence some possible overhead in
pricing.

I'd wager it's a 56cm. I find it's pretty easy to eyeball frame sizes by
looking at the distance between the top and down tubes where they meet the
head tube. Look at the pics here:
http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/atlantis.php and compare the head tubes on
the 56cm Atlantii.

53cm:

54.5cm:

56cm:

I am put off by the use of the word "vintage" in the title. At most, that
bike is 15 years old or so, right? That's not vintage in anyone's book.
Also, they're asking top dollar and can't be bothered to look up the
geometry chart on Riv's site and match it up to the correct size? Seat tube
and head tube angles are unknown?

Rene,
I've always used shifter cables in mine. I've never given it a second

Drag brakes also make excellent perking brakes which makes parking a tandem a

Re: [RBW] Re: (maybe) WTB Brooks B68 - Question regarding brooks saddle for Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-21 Thread Kieran J
The Cambiums all have that same roundy curvature that I really dislike. I
bought a C17 and rode it for about 90 seconds and immediately hated it -
that was enough for me. The cut-out version may be more forgiving but the
shape is roughly the same as the non-cut ones and the rubber construction
is very hard.

The shape of the B68 is very different than the Cambiums, in that it is
wide and very flat across the cantle and has a sharp ridge between the
middle-top of the saddle and the skirts. The B68 also has a good amount of
flex across the back, during pedaling and cornering.

2017-04-21 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I'm kind of a saddle-collecting geek so at one point I compared the
measurements on several saddles. The Rivet Loveland is 250 Long 205 Wide
and 70 High. The B67 (and therefore also B68) is 260 Long, 205 Wide and 73
High. So, yes, close but I do like a longer nosed saddle which the Brooks
gives you versus the Rivet.

2017-04-21 Thread Johnny Alien
Based on previous sales they are about $400 too high. Hard to say what size it
is. 53.5 hints at the 53cm frame and visually that looks right. The next step
up is 54.5. The TT measurement seems to be closer to the 54.5 frame size
though. The standover measurement is way high and closet to what a 56 frame
would be. So some of those numbers are off. Without getting accurate ones it's
hard to tell what the actual size is. Can't be a 56 though. It does look nice.

that tube of Shoe Goo has been opened before, it might be a solid block

Glad I could help. Just passing on what I've learned here.

My Riv still has its tail light wire along the brake cable run; it's a
minor annoyance. My plan is to change it to under-the-BB and into the rear
fender, but not until my current (lipless) VO fenders break. At that

couple years. Hope the Shoe Goo won't be dried out by then!

One other tip, if you run the wire under the BB. You have to leave room
for the FD cable.
I left a loop so the wire passes over.
But then at a later date I replaced the FD cable and forgot about the
dynamo wire (you don't see it from above). On my next ride, my front
shifting was sluggish and my headlight was acting up. I added the two
together and realized I'd run the FD cable right over that cable loop, and
now the FD cable was rubbing (sluggish shifting) off the insulation and
shorting the dynamo juice back to the frame.

So, don't do that.

Internal dynamo wiring routing is definitely something I'd want on a custom
frame.

Tim,

No, that is great info... It seemed I woke up with the question and typed
before doing a thorough search. But your notes help a lot. I too tried
the routing along existing cabling but did not really like the result. I
will experiment with Shoe Goo as well as the tape...

Big thanks for the notes and tips on this!

Re: [RBW] 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-21 Thread Tim Gavin
Bob-

There have been multiple discussions about wiring routing tips and tricks
on this forum. Perhaps search the forum from the google group interface?

For instance, I learned from this forum that Shoe Goo is an excellent
mostly-permanent adhesive for attaching wiring to the frame. I say
mostly-permanent, because the wire sticks very well, but the rubbery nature
of the Shoe Goo allows you to peel it off and easily pill up the residue
for no permanent marking on the frame.

On my first dynamo install (Rivendell Road Standard 650b converted), I
tried to just zip the wire to the brake cable along the top tube. But it
sags at times and is still pretty visible. For my next install, I followed
the most common practice and went down the bottom of the down tube, under
the BB, and back up.
To come back up to the tail light, the traditional way seems to use the
rolled lip of the metal fender.
My bike is using SKS plastic fenders (with no lip), so ran the wire along
the NDS chainstay and up a rack leg.
The wiring is out of sight and out of mind, and seems to stick on very well
(no major tours yet).

If I were using helicopter tape for a tail light wire install, I'd follow
the same under-the-BB routing. You could use the tape to go up the inside
of any fender, regardless of lip. I would use the water slide technique
described by Marc40a earlier, and I would clean the areas very, very well
first.

Another tip to consider: to create some safe slack between the fork and
frame connection, wrap the wire around a pencil to create a small coil
(think landline phone cord). Some folks put a removable connection in this
area in case they ever need to pull the fork.

[RBW] Re: Transporting a fendered tandem

2017-04-21 Thread Michael Hechmer
Having been to quite a few tandem rallies I have had the opportunity to
observe a lot of different ways for carrying these bikes in or on a car.
Many people have very tall cars and when they try to lift the fork into
the drop out, the chainrings hit the car, usually a window. The
Rockymount, which has no extension on its fork mount is especially prone to
this. When mounting any rack the ideal location is as close to the edge of
the car, but inside the point of attachment between the bars & car. I
have seen people with big expensive SUVs who needed three people and a
ladder to put the bike on top. If you have a really big vehicle it is best
to try to fit the bike inside, or go with a hitch rack, like the one posted
here. I have no trouble carrying my large & long touring tandem on top of
either our Prius, or our Golf Sportwagen. They both have pretty low roof
lines and with the rear wheel over the windshield are easy to work with.
That said, I don't think I have ever mounted a bike to the roof of my car
when I didn't have some anxiety about it. That's why I break the tandem
down & put it inside for longer trips, and use a rear hitch mount for
"half" bikes. One time, as we were preparing to leave coastal RI for the
trip back to VT, we got the tandem apart & safely stowed inside the Prius
in under 15 minutes, and about two minutes ahead of the cloud burst.

Absolutely! If you don't do that then you are in for a surprise as some of it
