Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)
Yes, what Joe said is true, actually. I was standing next to my bike, waiting with my kids and some others to walk the bikes across the crosswalk. The drunk driver drove up onto our sidewalk and nearly ran us down. The path we ride home is a really wide sidewalk meant to be shared and rarely used, and we often are the only souls out enjoying it. There is no bike lane and no shoulder and the road we travel is the only route in and out of the canyon. If we dared take the lane with our bikes we would back up traffic for miles and lynched forthwith. Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)
Another scenario on the sidewalk: if I were to ride my bike past a mom and child who are walking that sidewalk, instead of dismounting and walking by them, is the mom's perspective that I am operating a vehicle illegally on the sidewalk and endangering her child not spot-on? Is riding with my child on that fast, narrow street not also endangering? Re: [RBW] Hubbuh Gears
On 05/14/2017 07:51 AM, Daniel Jackson wrote: Would someone make a recommendation for a rear 9 speed cassette to work well with the silver tandem crank on the hubbuhubbuh? We live in very hilly terrain and commonly run as low as 18-20 gear inches on our own touring bikes. Is gearing for a tandem any different than a single? Yes. On a tandem you can use a much higher high gear than you can on a single. You will actually be able to spin out a top gear like a 54x12 or 50x11, and not just once every time Haley's Comet comes around, but regularly. You can go downhill like gangbusters: I hit 65 mph indicated on a computer one time, and once no computer but 50 lb of loaded panniers going downhill to the Rt 340 bridge at Harpers Ferry passed a line of a dozen cars going easily 10 mph faster than they were going (and believe me, nobody goes 55 there no matter what the speed limit signs say). (Stokers were screaming out loud both times: once in abject terror, once with joy.) But you pay for that going uphill. You'll definitely want a low granny. I don't know about 18" though - in a 24 x 34 T gear (19" for a 700x32 wheel) at 60 RPM you'll be doing 3.4 mph. Some tandem teams find it very difficult to balance at only 3.4 mph. On the other hand, stalling and falling over is not only painful (a guy I knew did that on his tandem and broke his arm as a result) but your stoker will never let you live it down; and stalling is definitely more likely to result in a fall on a tandem than a single. One other thing: you lose (and gain) momentum faster on a tandem than a single. When you crest a hill and start going downhill, it's definitely "push the piano off the top of the Chrysler Building" time but once the grade starts increasing you lose momentum much faster than a single. What that means to you is, those 1-tooth-difference oh-so-close gears that feel so nice when you're riding your single are piddling little wastes of time on a tandem. 2 teeth apart is a nice close shift on a tandem, and when you start to climb you'll want bigger bites than that. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Hubbuh Gears
Daniel, In our experience tandems are slower on uphills and faster (sometimes lots!) on downhills than singles. The Shimano 12-36 cassette might be good for you since you're in a hilly area. It will work without the changes needed to make a long cage work with the 40 tooth plus cassettes. Sometimes, if the hill is really steep and long, getting off and walking makes for a nice change -- although it's hard for me to accept that sometimes -- the HHH fun/relaxed nature will help in that regard, I hope. :) Glad your drag brake worries are somewhat allayed. You could always set it up with a brake lever controlled by the stoker, but the advantage of using a shifter is that it can be set and left until the hill flattens out without gripping the lever. If you're setting it for captain's coytrol of the drag a shifter is the only practical solution. Julian "our HHH arrives tomorrow via FedEx!" [RBW] Re: rattles n' squeaks
Hey Jeff, Two things that have worked in the past: 1) For a creaky basket, try using clear plastic hosing in between the rack and basket at a few strategic points. I usually just go to the hardware store and buy a few feet of the hosing - I cut it to the length of the section of the rack, then cut each piece in half lengthwise so that it can curve around the rack and lay in between the rack and basket. Use zip-ties to secure the basket on top of the hosing/rack and you're set for a long time. Something like this: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?sku=54411=CJzw5KXT7dMCFYW3wAod-rEKDA 2) For a noisy zipper pull, you can wrap it with any type of tape or twine. Not the prettiest solution, but blue painter's tape has worked in the past. I'm sure other folks probably have better solutions, but both of these will get rid of the rattles 'n' squeaks. Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Redwood Identity Crisis. Tire recommendations needed.
David- Hopefully you're already riding them on this lovely midwestern day... but I understand that the Soma C-lines should feel pretty similar to a Pasela TG. Same tread, similar casing, different puncture layer (but of comparable stoutness to the TG layer). For your purposes, they should work well. I'd also recommend the Panaracer Gravel King 700x32 with a slick casing (not the SK). They're lighter and faster than a Pasela, but a little more stout than a Compass (non-EL) tire. Good compromise for a reasonable price. The semi-knobby (SK) tires are great too, but the knobs are more than you need occasional maintained dirt/gravel. > On May 13, 2017, at 9:25 AM, David Banzerwrote: > > I forgot that I had a bought a used pair of Soma C-Lines, so I can put those > on now. > Any comparisons between those and Barlow Pass'. [RBW] Re: Hubbuh Gears
Hey Julian, Thanks for the reply. My main gearing question is whether or not gearing preferences from a single machine translate to a tandem. We know what we like on our own single machines but are unsure how to extrapolate this to a tandem. Re: drag braking I was simply concerned about the safety of using a shifter cable to actuate disc calipers - a big no no on mechanical lever driven discs. But someone pointed out that the forces are likely less at any given time and their application is gradual, which allayed my concerns a bit. [RBW] Re: WTB Ocean Air Erlen and a front rack for my Appaloosa
Hi Andrew, Sorry I have nothing to offer up but I can recommend the Nitto 27f front rack if you spot one of those. The 27f gives something of the best of both worlds, with a small upper rack and still the option to use front bags. I think there are some limitations on what front bags can be used but options are available. I prefer not to use the cantilever posts as mount points so having the option to use the fork mounts (with extra struts) on the Joe works well with the 27f. The other options I can think of are possibly the Soma Deluxe Porteur or maybe the Pass & Stow. Either may (or may not) work for what you want. Both of these put an emphasis on the upper carrying platform, which is either a great feature or not, based on your use and needs. I had a Soma rack on another bike and even though it was really useful having the large front platform (with bag or without), and being able to run front panniers, I still did not like the total weight of it. The Nitto solution, perception and not measured, never seems heavy to me, probably because the weight of the rack rides lower. Plus the pannier mounts on the 27f can be removed when not needed. There are probably other options, so hopefully people can mention those. Anyway... just data points. Hope it helps. [RBW] Re: Hubbuh Gears
Daniel, The Shimano HG400 11-34 cassette is a good value, and will provide you with about an ~ 18" low gear with the Silver cranks. On road tandems you often see higher high ends, but on the HHH I'd expect you'll be fine with the top gear of this setup, which would be about 108". That's the setup we're going with. Just wondering -- on another thread you seemed concerned about using a shifter to actuate the drag brake, but never specified what your concern is -- can you elucidate? Happy Hubbuh-ing! [RBW] Hubbuh Gears
Would someone make a recommendation for a rear 9 speed cassette to work well with the silver tandem crank on the hubbuhubbuh? We live in very hilly terrain and commonly run as low as 18-20 gear inches on our own touring bikes. Is gearing for a tandem any different than a single?
