My hour long bike commute to work in Bay Area vs Patrick's thunderstorm
ride in Colorado - my gut feel is that chances of me getting hit by a
driver browsing Facebook on their phone is much higher than Patrick getting
struck by lightning. His ride seems less risky and more fun!

[RBW] Re: Delight of rain

2017-07-10 Thread Ash A

I grew up in a place where the entire rainy season (as we called it), about
5 months, the temperature used to be in 70's or 80's even during heavy
rains (which was quite frequent and lasted hours). I've spent a lot of
time out in monsoon rains.

I got goosebumps imagining being out there in that environment!

As they say, heaven is on earth!

Re: [RBW] PSA: AHH in tuscon ($1500)

2017-07-10 Thread Tim Butterfield
It's certainly a possible. That size PBH is approximately 1/4" less than
mine (0.275591"). If I measure my AHH seat post vertically instead of at
the seat tube angle, that would put the saddle rails almost 3" above the
top of the seat post bolt. The top of my top tube in front of the saddle is
about 32 1/4" above my carpet. The current geometry chart shows a size 57
AHH having a 82cm standover height, which is 32.2835". It fits an 83 pbh
at either a 56 or 57. So, it could be either a 57 with less seat post
showing as just mentioned or a 56, if you find one, with more showing.
Maybe the data can help you focus the fit probability a little further.

[RBW] Re: Delight of rain

2017-07-10 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
These days, on nearly all major construction projects (I'm an ironworker so I'm
speaking of outdoors, with structural steel), if lightning has struck within
8-10 miles, workers are supposed to be "under cover" for 20-30 minutes after
the last strike. The safety department monitors this with a lightning detector.
How accurate these are, I can't say, but that's what they use. I've been in the
business for 38 years and that didn't happen (at least I hadn't seen it) until
around 10-12 years ago. We were just left to use common sense (a characteristic
with which ironworkers aren't always given much). I'm more like Patrick, and,
although, I don't like riding in thunderstorms and try to avoid them, it's not
a deal breaker. It was 90 degrees today by 12:30 with 65% humidity when I
finished a 3 hour ride. I would have welcomed one! Thanks for the report
Patrick.

Oh! Wonderful to hear, Andrew. I was beginning to wonder if I didn't know
how to write. Grin. It looks and feels like we're heading into our summer
monsoon season. Never called it that growing up. Back then it was just
summer. Sure sounds dramatic though. Monsoon ... in Colorado! Sardonic grin.

2017-07-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the anecdotes; interesting to compare my experience with yours
(plural). I guess a great deal of "what works" comes down to "what I
prefer." Me, I find that all the Rivs I've owned (5) handle "better" with
rear loads if the load is "heavy" -- over 20 lb. 3 customs, Sam, Ram.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlas-like but tubeless

2017-07-10 Thread Jim Bronson
The Atlas is more like a stouter Synergy, the rims look almost
identical. I have a mixed Synergy/Atlas wheelset (F/R). After I
cracked the rear Synergy, Velocity rebuilt the wheel with an Atlas. I
removed the labels on both and you really can't tell the difference.

No issues since the rebuild.

Re: [RBW] Front loads on Rivendell bicycles -- how heavy?

2017-07-10 Thread Tim Gavin
I've used lowrider panniers on a Nitto Campee front rack on my Riv Road
Standard. I had a similar experience to you; the front end gets extremely
stable but resistant to turn. I adapted by leaning more instead of turning
the bars. I found I really liked the way that handled on tour, compared to
a rear-biased load.
But, the same bike doesn't like more than about 10 lbs on the top of the
front wheel (bag or basket on a Mark's rack), unless lowriders are equipped
to balance it out.
