Thanks. My edeluxII light has never had the awesome beam pattern and brightness

this one is brighter.
I find myself straining to see it at night sometimes with my EII.

I don't use a Marks rack, but I'd imagine that you could just run the
wiring up the DS fork leg, across the crown, then forwards on the fork
crown stay and the underside of the rack to the light mount. Ziptied into
place, or just wrapped around the fork leg, stay, and rack rails.

Re: [RBW] Re: How hot is too hot?

2017-07-17 Thread GAJett
In hot weather I carry a water bottle for "the outside", dumping it over my
head and back as I go.

Dehydration is not the only risk.
Be aware also for:
* heat exhaustion (clammy skin, sweating profusely; stop, cool off, drink water
and mild electrolytes, rest) and
* heat STROKE (hot dry skin, maybe listless; begin ACTIVE cooling and CALL AN
AMBULANCE!!!)
There are other heat illnesses, but these are the big three.

Age, fitness level, weight, general heat tolerance, and becoming adapted to
warm weather all have their contribution. A fit 70-year old near target weight
who's ridden actively since cool weather will tolerate the heat much better
than the sedentary overweighy 30-year old getting a first ride in on a "90°/90%
day.

Anecdote: Shackelton's crew, left behind for a year in subfreezing weather on
Elephant Island found the springtime weather just above freezing to be
"uncomfortably warm".
Cheers!

Poor photography but here's one example: https://youtu.be/gcX0aSmkEIM?t=26

Curb hopping can be done at a slower speed. It takes some strength to lift
the wheel, but it's mostly coordinating your weight shift and unloading the
wheel at the same time. Like any skill, practice helps. I'd suggest finding
a curb and doing it unweighted until you're comfortable with it, and then
add the bag.

[RBW] WTB: Appaloosa 51cm and question about the 46cm size

2017-07-17 Thread Joe Bernard
I'm the same PBH and had a 51 joe (great bike, sold for various financial and
not-riding-enough reasons). It was perfect for reach-back bars like Albatross,
and rideable with drops on a short stem jacked way up, although too much of a
stretch to the lower portion. I'm fairly certain I could ride a 46 with drops,
if that helps with your decision.

Or get a Sam. It may be a stretch as a fully loaded touring bike, but it'll be
fine for average commuter/day-ride loads.

[RBW] WTB: Appaloosa 51cm and question about the 46cm size

2017-07-17 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Well I have a 79 pbh and a proportionately longer torso. I have a 51 Joe and
would never choose a 46 for myself. The 51 is a very good fit for me with a
nice amount of seat post showing In other words the saddle is not slammed
which I hate the looks of. I did notice for a time period that the 51's were
showing as available on the website but I knew Rivendell had none actually in
inventory. That's when I started calling around to dealers to find a 2017
silver. Found one at the Wheelhouse in LA so I lucked out. Most available back
then were some random 2016's

Good luck with your search. Great bike to own!

[RBW] Compass Stampede and Riv JB green

2017-07-17 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've ridden both on my Hilsen. I switched from JBs to Stampede Pass and never
went back (although I went from Stampede Pass to the fatter Barlow Pass.) The
only drawbacks are that they don't last nearly as long (maybe half the life?),
thereby being much more expensive per mile, and they are easier to damage,
especially the supple sidewall. The ride of the Compass is so much better that
I don't even think about the negatives.

Re: [RBW] Re: Can you Bunny hop a Rivbike?

2017-07-17 Thread Patrick Moore
I've never bunny hopped a Rivendell, but I recall one day bombing along on
a flat, firm dirt path on my mountain bike, racing someone on a small
motorized dirt bike, and suddenly finding a large hole right in front of
me. I don't know if it was superbe reflexes, or Divine intervention, but
whoop! I bunny hopped it cleanly.

Another instance, closer to home on a roadified '92 XO-1: I was keeping up
with traffic near an intersection on a large urban boulevard, without much
room to maneuver, and found the approaching pavement buckled. I did an
impromptu bunnyhop to the right to clear a pavement ridge. I was impressed
with myself (enough to remember it, apparently, since it was also entirely
impromptu). This one wasn't as life threatening as the hole in the path,
but I saved myself some rough pavement.

The most notable case of bunny hopping I've ever seen, though, was 30+
years ago along the K street corridor in Washington, DC, where bike
messengers were still common. A messenger on a road bike with 20 mm tires
hurtled at speed *directly toward the curb* and without slowing jumped the
curb and tore down the sidewalk. I know that, if I had planned a bunny hop
of that sort, I'd have dangerously flubbed it. Apart from harmless practice
on open road with foot retention and fat, soft tires -- it's not hard to do
in such circumstances -- mine have all been unthinking.

Come to think of it, I wonder if you really need retention; I think it's
much more a trick of weighting the tires heavily and then releasing all
weight on the pedals while, perhaps, lifting the bar. Note that in a real
bunny hop, both wheels come off the ground, not just the front. But I've
never done it except with retention Can anyone correct or confirm?

All my Rivendells are fixies and afaik you can't bunny hop, *strictu sensu*,
unless you can pause pedals while moving. If anyone knows how to bunnyhop
on a fixie, I'd like to hear about it.

[RBW] WTB: Appaloosa 51cm and question about the 46cm size

2017-07-17 Thread RJ March
This is my first post and I have been driven to it by a (mild) desperation.
Here's the story: I was looking to buy a Riv bike and settled on the Joe
Appaloosa. I went on the Riv website and was able to purchase a 51cm Hi Ho
Silver Joe Appaloosa. Amazing! I thought. A week later, I got a call and
sincere apology from Vince at Riv that this was a glitch in the system and
they have no more 51cm Appaloosas, at all. Not so amazing, I thought.

I am now appealing to any of you all - any chance anyone out there wants to
part ways with their 51cm Appaloosa?

Alternatively, since my PBH is 79, Riv offered me a 46cm Appaloosa. I think
it would end up feeling like a pretty small bike. I would love to get in on
the ride experience of the Appaloosa but not at the expense of fit. I have
no Riv shops in my area. Has anyone been in a similar situation between the
46 and 51 Appaloosa?

I am thinking I will stick with a 51cm size and go with a Sam Hillborne,
even though I am not a big fan of the caliper brake set up and would be
somewhat limited on touring - though I read on here that the Sam can haul,
too.

That video was just an example. Most of the time I would bunny hop over a curb
while riding directly at the curb because there are a lot of Street and trails

That would certainly make it a lot harder.

Riding flat pedals I can still do a front-then-near curb hop. I can't lift
without being clipped in, but I can still unload the pedals. That way
there's less weight on the bike when the rear wheel bumps up on to the
curb.

But the sort of bunny-hop you showed in the video? I can't figure out how
you'd do it without being clipped in.

Wow! Indeed, that is a bunny-hop up on to a curb. Done with grace and
skill. Geez!

I have often -wanted- to do such a thing, but I've never tried it. I'm
certain it is possible (I can do it on a unicycle) but am dissuaded by the
high cost of failure.

I'd say start by bunny-hopping over a piece of 2x4 lumber or somesuch with
the lumber perpendicular to the bike. Then I'd try "jumping" over a flat
painted line. Once comfortable with that, try jumping over the 2x4 with the
lumber parallel to the bike, sorta like shown in the video. Practice should
do it. Maybe I'll give this a go myself now...

Oh, and it helps to lift with your whole body, not just your arms.
Otherwise you're literally trying to lift yourself!

https://youtu.be/Zv97WNg6FMU

Some routes I ride I always have to stop, get off my bike, stand in the
street, walk the bike up the curb, remount the bike, and keep riding. I would
like to be able to just curb hop so I can keep going without dismounting every
time. Plus it will be fun.

But my bikes feel so heavy I can hardly get the front wheel off the ground for
a split second before it slams down again. Or maybe I'm just too weak. I don't
heavily load them. Just the front bag with 5 pounds or less in it.

100K ride from 9:00 am to 6:30 am to beat some of the heat.

Personally, there are zero days per year that I consider too hot to ride. I
sweat like crazy and I seem to hold up to the heat very well, although my
fitness is not where I'd like and I need to lose weight, so I may not ride the
Belgian ride, but I'll be on my bike every day, with rides between 15 and at
least 50 miles. I am, admittedly short on common sense, though.

Anyway, I know it's hot everywhere so how about you guys? I know Riv's don't
melt because HQ is over 100 degrees quite often. Stay hydrated out there! I'm
going shopping online for an asbestos chamois!

EasyRider : Jul 17 09:23AM -0700

Here in D.C., we're into our second week of mid-90s with high humidity, so
the heat index has climbed to 100 a few times ... it was 106 last Thursday.
100 is about where I draw the line. Combined with air pollution, a 15 mile
round trip commute downtown in those conditions becomes rather unpleasant,
and probably unhealthy.

A lot depends on where you ride, and specifically on how much shade
there is. I led a ride on that same Thursday in the Brandywine MD area,
and I found it actually pretty comfortable and pleasant most of the
time, except for the two flat tires I had. Here's the route:

here are links to our ride reports:

Re: [RBW] Re: How hot is too hot?

2017-07-17 Thread Lee Legrand
EasyRider,

Never taken a ride in 95 degree weather in humidity but I do think, and to
reiterate Ash, make sure you bring water on those rides to stay hydrated
and be prepared to have more breaks. Younger people can tolerate those
extreme conditions but as you get older, you can less tolerate those
conditions it may be that you should not ride because it is too extreme.
Hot and humid weather conditions on top of your body producing more heat
and perspiration to keep the body cool is not a good combination.

[RBW] Re: Can you Bunny hop a Rivbike?

2017-07-17 Thread Philip Williamson
I can curb hop easily on my Quickbeam, even with a load in the basket.
Push down on the handlebars before the curb, then pull up on the handlebars
while shifting your butt backwards. As soon as the front wheel is up, stand
up a little straighter on the bike to shift your weight forward and
unweight the rear wheel so it can climb the curb easily. That's what I do,
anyway.

I can't bunny hop without being clipped in, or ride a wheelie in any
circumstance. I'd like to learn, though!

Re: [RBW] Can you Bunny hop a Rivbike?

2017-07-17 Thread Reed Kennedy
Sure can! I do all the time. Front load in a basket, often 10 lbs,
sometimes more.

If you can jump while holding your bike you should be able to bunny-hop
while riding your bike given enough practice. Clipless pedals do genuinely
help here.

Do note: A wheelie, a bunny hop, and a curb hop are different things, at
least to me.

A wheelie is lifting only the front of the bike, smoothly, and then
balancing on the back wheel. I never learned that one.
A bunny hop is lifting both wheels simultaneously, generally at moderate to
high speed, to clear a railroad track or branch or something.
A curb hop is generally lifting up one wheel at a time, usually at very low
speed. Front up, pause, rear up when it gets to the curb.

Like I said, I can only do the latter two. They're similar, but they feel
different when I do 'em. Which one is it you're working on?

This summer I did 3 longish rides so far on my Appaloosa- Mt Diablo, Mt.
Hamilton and yesterday from South Bay area over Santa Cruz mountains to
coast - 55 miles. As luck would have it, any day I had any spare time was
90 degrees plus. It was quite uncomfortable and difficult, given my lack
of practice and endurance. However, I didn't face any trouble during the
ride or the day after. I do two things (1) bring extra water and a bottle
or two of sports drink (2) Take many breaks.

Some portions of these rides (while climbing, where my speed is like 4
miles per hour) I took off the helmet and wore a hiking hat, which helped
me stay cooler. My thoughts same as EasyRider: 100 deg might be my cutoff
point.

Personally, there are zero days per year that I consider too hot
to ride. I sweat like crazy and I seem to hold up to the heat very
well, although my fitness is not where I'd like and I need to lose
weight, so I may not ride the Belgian ride, but I'll be on my bike
every day, with rides between 15 and at least 50 miles. I am,
admittedly short on common sense, though.

Anyway, I know it's hot everywhere so how about you guys? I know
Riv's don't melt because HQ is over 100 degrees quite often. Stay
hydrated out there! I'm going shopping online for an asbestos chamois!

[RBW] Re: How hot is too hot?

2017-07-17 Thread EasyRider
Here in D.C., we're into our second week of mid-90s with high humidity, so
the heat index has climbed to 100 a few times ... it was 106 last Thursday.
100 is about where I draw the line. Combined with air pollution, a 15 mile
round trip commute downtown in those conditions becomes rather unpleasant,
and probably unhealthy.

[RBW] FS Carradice, WI, Vittoria

2017-07-17 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
The following items are offered for your kind consideration. All prices include
shipping:

Carradice Super C saddle bag - well used and well loved, 2 small holes visible
in pictures below which I hadn't noticed until now, $55
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggage/carradice-super-c-saddlebag-black-23-litre/

Carradice Classic Saddlebag Rack -
Works very well with the above bag providing both support and quick release,
$30 https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggage/carradice-classic-saddlebag-rack/

Special offer - bag and rack together $75

White Industries 16 tooth fixed gear cog - $32, near new condition, used for
120 miles. I think this will only work with WI hubs. Generic lock ring free
with purchase of cog.
http://www.bikeman.com/WIND-18COG16.html

Victoria 37-622 Hypers - 1 NIB $40, 3 used 1 season with plenty of tread left
$15 each, all 4 tires for $70. These are light, fast tires with very good flat
protection. Selling in favor of Compass tires waiting for me in New Hampshire.
Full disclosure - I lost traction and fell on these 2 weeks ago cornering too
fast. As far as I'm concerned it was my fault in a fit of overconfidence caused
by finally getting the hang of riding fixed. Details on my earlier post titled
Road Rash.
http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYVIVOHY/vittoria-voyager-hyper-folding-tyre

I took pictures of everything but don't see how to post them, so please ask.

I will be visiting family in New Hampshire next week so whatever sells will
come with me and ship from 03253 on Thursday July 27th.

Pricing on the used items is based on 50% of new plus shipping, which seems
fair. I'm open to reasonable offers.

Riv content - all used items have been on my Sam. Proceeds are going to offset
the cost of a new medium sackville saddlebag.

[RBW] Re: Hunq rider in Kingston NY

2017-07-17 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Not sure. I am a few hours south of Beacon by bicycle so it is not my
everyday stomping ground. But I was thinking a 45-ish mile loop, maybe
originating at Bryan's shop, ending at one of the Kingston eateries down by
the waterfront. Anybody have a route in that area? Bryan, have you explored
much? Maybe a spin up into the lower Catskills? If not, happy to host a
Riv ride from lovely Beacon that could include some dirt, challenging
climbs, and great French Toast.

[RBW] Re: In praise of Spur-cycles bells

2017-07-17 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
I just wonder when someone is going to make a real spur bell. You know,
like with real boot spurs that cow pokes actually use daily (hey, I lived
in TX and OK for 20 years). Guess I'll pull out my invention sketch
book.

Indeed, the Crane Karen bell has the most clear, beautiful tone. Cheerful,
even. I try to ring it a ways out so as not to startle people.

Cheers,

blown away at how nice this bell in. It's loud and pure and never makes a
peep unless you want it to. I just picked up a second one from a tiny
Berkeley Bike Boutique, just because they had it on the shelf, and I like
buying local. Spur Cycle bells are MUSA and they kick butt. $50 for a
