Re: [RBW] Re: Can you Bunny hop a Rivbike?

2017-07-18 Thread lum gim fong
Today I tried again. Instead of thinking so much about the directions I read
online and saw on the videos I just tried to do it. I did step one I guess
easily which would be raising the front wheel over objects and letting the back
wheel just roll along. Seemed easier to get the front wheel up. I "jumped" the
manhole covers in the 'hood as I rode around. Had fun. Felt like maybe the rear
wheel was following the front wheel up in the air a bit when I went fast. I
will have to videotape to see what is happening.

It will be nice when I no longer have to dismount and walk my bike up and down
curbs.

I was wondering if the SON hub 36 spoke wheels and Noodles/stem and brake
levers will be ok with all this clumsy yanking up and bouncy handling I am
doing with them now to learn this.

[RBW] Re: How hot is too hot?

2017-07-18 Thread dstein
90 was always my cutoff point when I lived in Nashville. Especially since
it was so humid it always felt like 100 or more. It's hard to find time to
even ride in the AM a lot of times in that kind of sweltering, hot, humid
southern weather as it barely seems to drop below 80 at night and picks
right back up again as soon as the sun is out (maybe 6AM but i'm not an
early bird, by 10 or 11 in the thick of summer it's too late). For road
rides you might get a little shade but not enough to matter. Kind of a
bummer since the winters can be wet, and the summers hot, it disrupts a lot
of riding. I've been in DC a lot lately and even though its been in the low
90's it didn't seem as hot, and DC can get pretty swampy, but as mentioned
earlier maybe it makes a huge difference to head out to the country there.

Now that I'm in California I don't have a cutoff. I've done a few rides on
Mt. Diablo in 90 plus temps that was pretty uncomfortable but not a
nightmare like a Southern 90 degree day in TN. Even on extra hot days out
here it always seems to cool down at night and you have ample time in the
AM to ride.

S. Texas here - if you don't like to ride in the hot, you don't ride.
I put Smart Water in my water bottle, take a banana for rest stop.
I ride in the morning, and ride the shady greenways to spend as little time in
the sun as possible.

As long as you're moving, you feel cool enough. It's when you stop that
the heat closes in on you, so I also pick my stops to be the shadiest and
tallest spots around, so they usually have a breeze.
As far as that asbestos chamois goes, you want the least insulation you can
put on your body - I wear the lightest weight merino and MUSA shorts, and
this the best application I know for a Brooks saddle.

Legendary 1992 Bridgestone XO-2 $425 52cm frame

This Pearl White example is almost completely original. The tires are not
original and the specifications said the bike was originally equipped with
presta tubes. The bike currently has schraeder valved tubes so it is likely
the rims have been drilled to accomodate the larger "car type" valves. The
rear rack is a Specialized branded one. Overall condition is very good.

Complete specifications and geometry can be found at the pdf file at the
link below. XO-2 description on page 38 Geometry information is on page 47,
Component specifications on page 49

http://sheldonbrown.com/bridgestone/1992/1992.pdf

If you're even looking at this ad, you likely know a little bit about the
Bridgestone bikes of the early 90s and Grant Petersen. Grant Petersen
currently runs Rivendell Bicycles and is well-known for promoting sensible
(but not cheap) bicycles. The PDF file at the link is a 1992 Bridgestone
catalog which has all sorts of interesting information on bicycle sizing,
components, and materials.

We're asking real money for this bicycle and while we may entertain offers,
we may not accept much below the listed price. The listed price is pretty
much mid-range from what we've uncovered via the wonders of the internet.
If you're seriously interested, contact us by email and set up a time to
check out the bike with your own eyes. After you've inspected the bike you
can always make an offer but, if it's not realistic, don't hold your breath
expecting it to be accepted.

If the advertisement on Craigslist is up, then the bike is available.
Thanks for looking!

I called all of the dealers lsted when I was looking for my 2017 Joe. This
was after the 51 went out of stock on the Riv site. VERY few of them out
there and like I mentioned a few left over 2016's but I'm guessing they are
gone by now since it has been a few months now. Several dealers were
wishing they could have gotten more Joes in as there is quite a demand for
them. When I called the Wheelhouse they didn't have a 2017 on the floor
but thought they might have some in back in boxes. I completely lucked out
that they had my size and my preferred color. I really love this bike and
it has settled my cravings for buying bikes. (not easy to cure!)

Combined with air pollution, a 15 mile round trip commute

A lot depends on where you ride, and specifically on how much
shade there is. I led a ride on that same Thursday in the
Brandywine MD area, and I found it actually pretty comfortable and
pleasant most of the time, except for the two flat tires I had.
Here's the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/22794252

 There was also an A/B
leader; here are links to our ride reports:
http://ohbike.memberlodge.org/reports/4975217
 for the A/B
leader's, and http://ohbike.memberlodge.org/reports/4975268
 for mine. Of
course, even though it's not all that distant from downtown DC,
there's a world of difference between the center of downtown DC
and the heart of PG County's Rural Tier!

FWIW, I haven't found one single day this summer to be
insufferable or too hot to ride. But I'm mostly leading and I
mostly get to pick and plan the routes.

chance of rain. Light winds for this area, always out of the

Friday's Belgium Day 100K ride from 9:00 am to 6:30 am to

Personally, there are zero days per year that I consider too
hot to ride. I sweat like crazy and I seem to hold up to the
heat very well, although my fitness is not where I'd like and
I need to lose weight, so I may not ride the Belgian ride,
but I'll be on my bike every day, with rides between 15 and
at least 50 miles. I am, admittedly short on common sense,
though.

Anyway, I know it's hot everywhere so how about you guys? I
know Riv's don't melt because HQ is over 100 degrees quite
often. Stay hydrated out there! I'm going shopping online for
an asbestos chamois!

Oh yes, it's actually somewhat of a crutch to lift up while clipped in and
the proper technique to bunny hop doesn't work that way. If you learn to
bunny hop using flat pedals, you can get more air and bunny hop higher
objects compared to just lifting up the rear wheel with you clipped in.

[RBW] Re: How hot is too hot?

2017-07-18 Thread Ryan Thompson
Tim,

I just got back from visiting family in KC and while I was there rode 120
miles of the Katy/Rock Island Spur trail from Columbia to around Pleasant
Hill in that heat. I thought I was prepared but it was brutal. It
reminded me of working on the family farm in July while bringing in Hay,
and all you wanted to do was jump in the creek to cool off at the end of
the day. The key for me was to ensure I have enough water and take
multiple breaks to cool down.

Now that I'm back in DC, the weather isn't much better.

Yes! With a heat index of 100 downtown, and the pavement simmering, ugh.
But if I can play hooky and ride out to Great Falls under the tree canopy

[RBW] Re: Anybody recognize this handlebar?

2017-07-18 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
I made a poor man's version of loop bar for my recent 6-hour trip by adding
some old bar end grips to Alba. I think I used the loop area for about 20%
of the times. Ideally for a long frame like Appa with some load, the loop
needs to be wider.

I do think overall it looks ugly, but an option upright bar users can
consider for long trips. esp for those who feel the reach is not long
enough with Chocos.

+1 on Compass ELs. The group convinced me to buy Barlow Pass ELs about a year
and a half ago. I was a little timid about the ELs but, over the first 4
months, I started getting braver using them on gravel trails and rough roads.
I haven't had a flat the entire time. I love the nimble performance and feel
very confident on them. I've been using them at about 40 psi in the front and
35 psi on the rear. Great tires.

I've only got a couple of thousand of miles on my IQ-X, so it's not had the
chance to get any serious wear, but as for plastic lenses I put about
25,000 miles onto a IQ-Cyo (another plastic-lensed joint) without noticable
lens wear. The -X has an impressive beam throw, so even with some
fogging it should be substantially brighter than a Cyo or eDelux.
