This is a fun thread! Here's my Protovelo set up for a mixed road/gravel short

Pack light, but with lots of food and water if you won't have places to stop.

Cheers,

Re: [RBW] Re: Show me your touring/camping setup!

2017-08-22 Thread Lee Legrand
I have never done a touring/camping on a bicycle and hope to do it one day
but I have done tons of research on it.

1. Develop a minimalist attitude and pack light. Try to bring things that
you need and instead of things you would like to have. Easy to overpack
things. My research has told me to get the things you would like to have
and then begin to pair down from there.

2. Many people have different setups for carrying there things but the
most logical is to carry heavy stuff up front and lighter stuff in the
rear. The french bicycle company Berthoud, recommends a set up where it is
60 front/ 40 rear. Better weight distribution since majority of your body
weight is on the rear wheel. Met a bicycle tourist from France recently
who came thru my town and he told me broke the rear triangle on his trek
across the USA but he did have most of his loads in the rear. He manage to
get it welded together to continue his journey. Better to have it most
loads up front.

3. Keep the loads low for stability of the bicycle. Another of Berthoud
advise. Yes they sell panniers and that may be part of their of it but it
makes since to keep the center of gravity low.

4. Everyone has a favorite in how they carry there stuff but I do think
panniers are better than trailers. It is one less thing to break down and
manuever. I think trailer are good if you need to bring stuff on a large
journey around the world and extra capacity is needed.

5. Make sure you can bring enough water on your journey. Never know when
you will be on long stretches with no access to water for awhile. At least
bring 3 water bottles.

6. I think for light touring, two large panniers up front with a handlebar
bag and possible a small rear saddlebag is all that is needed. The
saddlebag needs not be large and if it is, consider what you are bringing
again. Do I really need it? Is it heavy?

7. Steve told me this once but he mentioned that you should know the
terrain so you have the gear required to ride it. Changes in elevation
with stuff on the bicycle with not low enough gear to ride will be a
problem.

Thats all I got.

2017-08-22 Thread Eric Langley
I've been using these in Chicago for 4 years now, and no wheel thefts.

Granted, I never leave them locked up outside more than a few hours at a
time, but it's good piece of mind when I'm grocery shopping or watching a
movie, and way simpler than carrying around a bunch of locks and cables for
all of your bike bits.

For expensive saddles, I recommend the same hollow allen key trick using
bolts from Bicycle Bolts

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Beach Build

2017-08-22 Thread 'Ann L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thank you for the nice comments :)

I do have another part to the finding a bike story. My first post was a
bit long so pared it down.

When the Appaloosa build came out, I saw the pictures of the butternut
frame and was blown away. But I was extremely happy with my Soma and had
no justification for buying another bike, particularly for the kind of
riding it was designed for. When I understood that my Soma was not viable
here, I looked back to RBW to see what they had in stock because I knew I
wouldn't last long without a bike. They had a 2016 butternut frame in my
size. I called because I had questions regarding max tire clearance and
the projected weight of the bike (I am a small person and have to carry it
up three flights of stairs). It was the afternoon of July 3rd, I called,
and it was picked up and I heard "Hello, this is Grant." I almost dropped
the phone. I did not expect him to answer. I had called RBW from time to
time regarding questions and checking on orders and had dealt with Will or
Mark. I told him how much I had enjoyed my Soma and all the compliments I
had gotten over the years, even from the carbon fiber crowd and explained
my current situation. He was super nice (a lot of the staff had left early
for the holiday and that was why he answered the phone). He had all sorts
of questions, not only about bikes, but about my job, my move, random
stuff. He wanted to know if considered the Clem. He said they also had
really wide tire capacity and they were expecting a new shipment. We went
back and forth regarding specifications and I kept on going back to the
Appaloosa. There was a point that he saw where my heart was and that is
how I ended up with my bike.

2017-08-22 Thread lum gim fong
Jay,

I think this is a fit issue if you are trying to replicate your fit from
one bike onto another. Is that the goal?

I have heard of something I think is called an "XY axis method" that does
this. Done with lasers. I think it is based on how bars and saddle sit
relative to the bb. I think. I am not sure I fully understood what the guy
was telling me.
I had it done to transfer my fit from my Bleriot to my Rambouillet. IIRC my
Rambouillet needed saddle and bars back and lower than what I had guessed
based on my own tape measure methods at home.

[RBW] Re: Anyone have a sub-25lb. complete Rivendell?

2017-08-22 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
My ~56cm Rivendell custom came to a little under 25 pounds, ready-to-ride.
That means that weight includes a mini pump, tubes+small tools, a small bag
to hold 'em all, and pedals ("official" bike weights often omit that!)
Because I built it to be a randonneur-type ride, the weight even includes a
Schmidt SON dynamo light+hub, fenders, and a small front rack.

Some highlights for you to consider:

   - Full Campagnolo Record 10-speed with lots of carbon, although no Ti
   cassette
   - Titanium bits like the Record seatpost, Ibis quill stem, rails on the
   B17, and some less-critical bolts
   - 32/36 spoked wheels with lightweight rims manufactured from Nb-Al
alloy and DT Revolution spokes; brass nipples though
   - Lightweight Challenge PR tires with lightweight Schwalbe SV-18 tubes
   - Super-exclusive Nitto "Soba" handlebar :)

There's nothing that I will cringe at, safety or performance-wise, but
*some* (bike nerd) effort and monies were spent making it lighter where
applicable during the spec+build, although not after to achieve a specific
weight goal, because there wasn't one.

Sadly, I wish I ride this bike more. I'm mostly on my 30+ pound Atlantis
nowadays.

Re: [RBW] WTB / WTT Tektro R559 with hex nut

2017-08-22 Thread David Banzer
Hi Jack,
The bolt is not a standard bolt that you can buy in a hardware store.
However, Tektro uses the same mounting bolts on different brake models.
I've successfully swapped bolts out of the 800a model, which is
inexpensive: https://www.modernbike.com/tektro-800a-sidepull-brake-set
You could do that then sell the set of 800a's as recessed mounts. You only
need to swap the rear recessed with the bolt-on front.

[RBW] Re: Velo-Orange just saved my wheel!

2017-08-22 Thread Marc Irwin
Oh, I'm aware it's just a hollow allen key, but does you normal wheel thief
know that or carry one around? I doubt it, I'm just glad to see it foiled
one of them. I was 50 miles from home.

Go in the fall when the weather is cooler. Ride the French Quarter early in
the morning and keep your eye on your therapist. I prefer the Drago's
Metairie location. Great vibe and a fave of the locals. It is the real
deal. http://www.dragosrestaurant.com/

2017-08-22 Thread islaysteve
Glad to hear that the skewer worked for you Marc. I too have been using
them, although in reality, I don't leave my bike anywhere. Not to be a
downer, but you should know that the hollow allen wrench "key" is widely
available on the web, and from V.O. So it's a measure of security but not
too ideal. You may also know that other companies make security skewers.
One is Hexlox, which also makes some cool security devices for all of the
bolts on your bike. Cheers, Steve
