[RBW] Re: OT: Sewing your own bags?

2017-08-29 Thread Orc
I've made 20 or so handlebar bags, and in my experience /most/ of the work
is pretty easy, but the parts that aren't are surprisingly difficult. In
particular, sewing the corners of the bag & taping the edges are the places
where you'll end up driving yourself and the sewing machine to despair
(there's a honorable mention to sewing external pockets on and keeping them
square and aligned, but if you presew & tape the pocket carcasses and then
pin them to the not-yet-sewn-together main bag it's fairly straightforward
to sew them into place with a series of straight seams & bartacked or
riveted corners.)

I've found that, even with hand-tacking the fabric together and using a
Pfaff 130 to sew I'll end up hand-stitching the corners & then the tape on
the corners, because once you get 4-5 layers of fabric
(tape+carcass+carcass+pocket+tape for the front corners of a rando bag)
under the presser foot they will /cheerfully/ squirt over to one side and
cause the seam to stitch itself off the edge of the fabric.

It's also REALLY useful to look at some of the products from some of the
more successful bagmakers and see the places where they had the stitching
get away from them. Not for the purposes of gloating, but to remind
yourself, when you're looking with loathing at the drunkard's walk of a
seam that you're picking the thread out of in preparation for another
attempt, that sewing is often more of a pitched battle to the death no
matter how good you are at it.

life before I got them into ridable shape" parsons.

Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for thumb shifters?

2017-08-29 Thread R. Alexis
As mentioned before, using Shimano Deore XT/DX thumb shifters on dirt drop
equipped WTB Phoenix and Suntour Command Shifters on the WTB Dirt Drop
equipped OX Brand Ti Cruiser 29er. I also have some early SRAM Grip Shift
rotational Road/Mountain shifters on my 1993 Bridgestone XO-1 on some Nitto
Mustache bars on the ends. They work well, don't stick out like regular bar
ends. Seems like it would work well on the ends of some dirt drops.

Forgot to mention, also using Paul shifter mounts with Shimano bar ends on
my Waterford 1400 on ti Jones H-Bar with J bends and some lower end Shimano
GS-200 (?) on a couple bikes that were modified by drilling and tapping to
take barrel adjusters. All work well.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-08-29 Thread LBleriot
I'm no authority on this, but I like 5-8 mm of clearance between tire and
fender; not so much for sand or mud, but more for sticks and other debris
that might jam the fenders. You could go without fenders, but unless you
brush the sand out of the waxed drive train, the grit will prematurely wear
the chain/cassette.

Are you riding on the beach, or just near it? If you're riding on the
beach no fender is going to keep the grit off.

After I started at Riv, I gave it to my then RBW co-worker, Joe Bauder, who

Good luck finding a larger one! I guess owners really like them and are

[RBW] Portland to SF?

2017-08-29 Thread Ty Graham
I road Astoria to San Francisco in 2014. I'm planning to ride Portland to
Brookings in a few weeks.
The Oregon portion is definitely the best part. I'm repeating that portion
since the California coast at big sur is screwed up until 2018.
I rode my Atlantis with compass 700x38 which I consider the perfect bike for
this ride.
I credit card toured which was the right choice for me except for 2 downsides:
northern cal the loading gets thin. I had to put together some weird days just
to make motels work. Motels can get expensive as you get close to the Bay Area.
I paid $250 for an $80 room on Saturday in Gualala. Other down side is missing
out on hanging out with trail friends. Everyone you meet and you'll meet a lot
is camping. It was strange to keep riding past the campground on to my lonely
motel.
I used the ACA maps. I'd highly recommend. I'm pure digital, but really like
having the analog map to ponder. I have the book but didn't use it on the trip.
Folks with the book seemed to be doing a lot more 101 riding and seeing less of
the nice side roads.
Here's a link to my Flickr. You can see elevation profiles and totals in the

2017-08-29 Thread Eli Queen
Not 100% sure if I'm free on that date (probably am!), but I'm in the
Boston area though. Cambridge to be exact. If you want to do a ride on the
Minuteman Bikeway I'd really suggest making a loop via the Battle Road
Trail (revolutionary war era dirt road, now a historic site) and the
Reformatory Branch Trail. The Minuteman is okay, paved multi-use path = can
be busy, but Battle Road is truly beautiful, and then you get to connect it
all back up via a packed dirt rail tail.

Here's a like to the route from the Alewife T station (but of course you
could start in form any point on the Minuteman):
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/24725011

Let me know if you have any questions. Hope others are up for a ride, and I
can make it too!

[RBW] For sale - 58cm Hunqapillar frame, fork, headset, seatpost

2017-08-29 Thread jtallman
Bought from Rivendell in 2011. Original grey with kidney bean red headtube.
No dents, but I have touched up some paint issues in 2 places - on the
middle of the top tube (fell over in the gravel) and the right chainstay
just behind the bottom bracket shell (chainsuck). Also some shellac residue
on the top tube and right chainstay. I have ridden it about 2,000 miles
over the past 6 years. I tried several handlebar configurations - lots of
pictures on my flickr account https://flic.kr/s/aHsjCimVmc

I have attached a jpg image of the geometry. I have a pbh of 86 cm and
standover was never an issue even with 2.1 inch tires. I tried nitto noodle
handlebars for a while and really liked them, but the top tube was just too
long even with a 5 cm stem. Bosco bars worked great with a 12 cm stem.
Price is $1,200 for frame, fork, Ritchey Logic headset, and Nitto S83 (size
26.8) seatpost. My zip code is 24202 to help you get a shipping quote.
PayPal is fine. Glad to answer any questions that I can!

One thing about camping vs hotels is there will be other folks doing the
same route and some likely one the same pace as you. It makes for some
great company around the campfire at night if you choose to camp. I made
some very cool friends when I did it that I still have to this day. Camping
is not hard at all imo. You'll be able to pick up supplies every day so you
don't need to carry much.

My Protovelo came with an Appaloosa head badge, Riv advertised it as a
Protopaloosa, the single decal on the top of the mid tube identifies it as
a Protovelo, I suspect they added the head badge sometime after the bike
was built. It was a demo bike at Riv headquarters for a while before I
bought it from them.

Further thread hijacking - do all the Waterford frames have the W in the

That bike is definitely a Protovelo. I'd guess from the bunch that Riv sold

John, Tim,Thanks for the comments. I'm running the 50 mm Velo Orange
snakeskin fenders. I installed the 42mm Shikoros on Velocity Dyad rims,
25mm at the bead I believe. The Soma tires measure about 40mm when I
inflate to 45psi. This seems to be the best ride pressure so far in my
experimentation. The ride is super smooth compared to the Continental
tires that I had on the wheels previously. I can't remember exactly which
model I was using, but they lasted darn near forever. I am surprised at
the difference in ride feel with the Shikoros. I have only ridden about
1000 miles so far, so I can't really comment on longevity yet.

[RBW] Re: New England Lobstah Riv Roll?

2017-08-29 Thread Wally Estrella
Hi Folks:

After further review the best date for me is 9/23 w/ the NEBB. So, a
meet-up somewhere on the Minute Man, lunch then head over to the Ball for
2ish.
I'm not sure if I'm coming down via car or taking the Amtrak. I'll look at
the Amtrak scheduling to see if helps or hurts the timing of everything.

CHEERS!
