all had chainguards, either -- my Sprite did not. Alvit rd, 3/32 chain.

1x9 on my Appaloosa includes long cage XT Shadow RD, XT 11-36 cassette with
sugino xd600 crankarms and 34t 100bcd single speed(no ramps) chainring. I
believe the BB is a Sugino 68x 107, which get the chainline/center of
cassette close to perfect. No retention devices used. Had the same setup on
my Hunqapillar. Never any issue with dropped chains. I do like to keep
chain as short as possible. Long cage RD is certainly not required by any
means. I'd go short cage if I had one!

Single chainring drivetrains with multiple rear sprockets are famous for
dropping chains.  The original spaceframe Moulton, the AM-7, originally
came only that way.  I remember reading a posting by an owner who said
his bike was "possessed by the Devil" on account of throwing the chain,
as you say, on bouncy roads.  They came up with this nifty chain keeper
to prevent derailing:

Anything over 8% I bail.

Silver shifters and deore rear derailer. No front derailer yet. But got a
SunXCD coming in the mail.

But I probably would not use a front derailer if I could shift from the 24
to the 40 on the fly with my foot. I think I could drop from the 40 to 24
easily with foot. Not sure about the other way.

I've lived my entire life in the flat parts of Oklahoma. Back in the
mid-90's, when I first got into riding, I considered myself to be in pretty
decent riding shape. I hauled my bike out to Colorado and rode the paved
roads into and thru the Garden of the Gods. That's when I learned my
riding fitness wasn't so good after all. I was huffing and puffing, barely
moving uphill when two girls on big mountain bikes with big knobbies just
cruised by me, chit chatting away, not at all out of breath.

On the downhill, I got going so fast that I broke a brake cable and almost
wore holes in the soles of my shoes! I did get stopped though!!

Reason for selling: I didn't like them as much as I thought I would.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pricing a HubbuHubbuH build

2017-09-22 Thread Ed Felker
Interesting. Must have changed over time; or because we use bar end
shifters the gaps are not an issue.

We bought XD tandem cranks new in late 2015 for our Spectrum tandem. Zephyr
chainrings have worked great with Shimano 9-speed chain and cassette
without any special modifications.

We're running 50-40-26 rings, Shimano 9-speed bar-end shifters and
Campagnolo front derailleur, the older kind made for the Racing Triple and
similar cranksets.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pricing a HubbuHubbuH build

2017-09-22 Thread Peter White
Hi Ed,

I've tried to get TA rings to work on the XD 2 cranks without success. The
studs for the inner triple ring are too long and there was no way to get
the middle ring close enough to the inner without the gap between the
middle ring and the outer ring being too large. I wonder if there's been a
change in the design of the Sugino cranks in the years since I tried it?
