[RBW] Rambouillet in orange metallic
I got this back in the summer when I really wasn't looking for another bike, but a Riv owner just a couple hours away posted this one for sale. I've always loved the orange metallic of the early Rams and when I saw this bike was a 54 cm, I had to at least go take a ride. Needless to say I was hooked. I took time to acquire the parts I wanted to use, updating with a mix of modern and classic. https://flic.kr/p/21DiS Fitted new some new parts to better suit my stable of other bikes and parts, namely the drive train. Now fitted with 10 speed Shimano bar end shifters, 12-32 Ultegra cassette, XC-70 FD (works just fine on a triple), M-952 RD, Sugino Alpina Triple, XT M-8020pedals, Berthoud Aspin saddle, Dura Ace seatpost, Nitto stem and bars (105 I think), Cane Creek brake levers, Tektro long reach brakes, Nitto rack with Acorn mini Rando bag, HED Ardenne rims/DT spokes/Chris King hubs. Soma Vitesse 700x38 tires (meas. 36.5 mm wide). I've done my share of builds over the past 10 years and learned to double check that everything would work together, but I was pleasantly surprised that it all worked perfectly from the very first ride. This frame rides like a dream, gearing totally synced for my cadence from flats to steep climbs. It had a nice ride and handling with the stock 8 speed, wheels and 32 mm tires, but it now blows me away - far more than I expected. I was truly surprised, being a bit skeptical by nature. The supple 38 tires really do float over rough pavement and gravel without any loss in speed. Even up long hills the Ram is only slightly slower than my much lighter crabon on the same wheels with 25 mm Conti tires. Changing out current bars for Gran Bois Maes as I prefer parallel drops and a bit of flare. Will get more photos after Maes bars are installed. Every bike is a sum of its parts and the Ram evokes a synergy that I could live with a long time. Unfortunately, shortly after I finished the build a knee issue ensued that has kept me off the bike. Hopefully the knee will soon be healed enough to ride again. Cheers, Bill in Roswell, GA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Patrick: What did you decide on for your transmission -- AW 3 speed? Please post photos of new build; I'd like to see how the tires clear the frame. As for tires: I find that my typical 25 to 40 lb rear load is noticeably smoother on a 60 psi 29 mm* Elk Pass than on the slightly wider Kojak. Note: I carried similar loads on 22 mm 559 X "one inch" Specialized Turbos at 90 psi, and these worked surprisingly well, except that I kept breaking a spoke on the drive side near the rim. *And* I had to be very careful over our 4" expansion cracks, which was annoying. Otherwise, the Turbos were very smooth tires, and fast. I commuted on them for years. It's suppleness, IME. Plush, wide tires are not only about engine weight, and that may be a realitively minor factor within a 60-100 pound range or so. In my experience it’s mostly about the roads and trails I ride. The rougher the road or trail, the plusher, wider I want my tire. And on the Hunqapillar, it often happens that with a load of groceries (60 pounds or so), that the ride is smoother because of the weight, because of the tires, than when I ride the same bike, same engine, same road, same tires, same pressures, same speeds without the extra weight — which I tend to attribute to the Racing Ralphs not being as light in the casing as the Compass, and so more weight kicks them into even more plush mode. [RBW] Re: "We’ll have “classic” single speed frames again...."
Further me talking to myself. I will be running 32mm tires at the minimum. As I understand, TB14 would be good (I've ridden them this way, it works well). The VO PBP are only 19mm wide, not ideal to go with wider tires on that. TB14 are 23mm wide. Grand Bois has some other rims that are 23mm wide. A part of me wants to go 36/36 but there is no need really, I weigh 170 ;) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Here's some info for those interested.. GRAN COMPE HUB fixed/free, silver, 32H 16600 yen Abeille 32H 16000 yen Dt competition spokes 6400 yen Wheel assembly fee 6000 yen The shipping fee to US is about 12000 yen Total about 57000 yen So that's about ~$502USD total for a wheelset. Shipping is $105. Not sure if I want to do this just to get the Grand Bois rims. The other thought is TB14 rims, Velo Orange PBP, or on the very cheap, CR-18 - Any thoughts? [RBW] Re: Middle of Nowhere Cycling Club
Middle of Nowhere reminds me of what happened on a tour about 35 years ago. I was cycling across Australia from Canberra to Perth, and after a couple of weeks I'd ridden off the edge of the maps I had, and was just following my nose without fussing too much about whether I was going in exactly the right direction or how far it was to my next stop. I rode out of the town of Mildura one morning, and the road sign at the edge of town said "Adelaide 399km". If it had said 401 I probably wouldn't have thought twice about it, but as I rode along I started to think "399 is doable in one hit, I could probably make that my next stop". Anyway, I got to Renmark shortly before sunset, stocked up on food, refilled all my waterbottles, and headed off towards Adelaide as it got dark. By about 3am I was feeling pretty stuffed, and decided I would stop at the next town - I could see some lights a few kilometres ahead. It wasn't until I got to where the lights were that I found it was an isolated old garage that for some reason had all these lights blazing and a big sign saying "Midla Nowhere". I carried on for a few km until the next roadside rest halt, slept on a concrete bench until the sun came up, then carried on and got into Adelaide at about lunchtime. I subsequently found out from the friends I was staying with in Adelaide that Midla Nowhere was an artist's studio. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
