[RBW] Bullnose bars for long gravel rides?

2017-12-24 Thread drew
It depends on the version. Vintage ones are not great for me. Hard to get high,
and very flat/straight. New riv ones are much improved and maybe the best
looking bar ever. That said, I think a map/ahearne style bar offers a similar
yet better set of positions, and a more customizable fit.

Yeah, no skidding for me, it's just what I've come to associate with fixed gear

[RBW] Bullnose bars for long gravel rides?

2017-12-24 Thread Mike K.
Merry Christmas, gang! I'm building up a Stumpjumper to be an
all-rounder/gravel bike to complement my Ram for roads. I was thinking about
putting Bullmoose bars on the SJ for better control on trails or slick roads,
but was curious unsure how they would do over a longer ride on gravel or
trails. Does anyone have experience with long Bullmoose rides?

Thanks, all.

Time Life Presents: RIVENDELL

I think that’s a great idea. I’d be interested in revenue graphs for the early
years: Reader goes out, revenue shoots up, Grant anxiety ebbs. I just like

Employee photos and bikes over the years, for sure. Show the evolution of Riv
bike geometries, and maybe the Riv influence on the industry.

[RBW] Re: Fenderless Sam: Snoqualmie or Barlow Pass?

2017-12-24 Thread tc
Rod, that's awesome! I just set psi to 60 on the front unloaded tire and
measured max width. For height (above rim lip), I rested the bottom edge
of the caliper on the top of the rim; for the top edge of the caliper I
rested a small spirit level on the top of the tire and measured up to that
from the rim. Highly unscientific but at least gets a ballpark measure :)

Thanks, and happy holidays!

Re: [RBW] Re: Reader index?

2017-12-24 Thread Patrick Moore
This could be a fascinating thread. Book sections: history of Rivendell,
from the BBUSA days; a frames and bikes section, full color plates; a
luggage section; a clothing section; etc. Luggage: from the very first,
kitchen table saddle wedges to the more than L Vuiton luggage of today (I'm
not criticizing, just describing). Those early jerseys that buttoned up the
shoulder, with nut buttons. Staff bicycles. Customs. Unusual builds. The
NOS inventory that kept Riv going in the early years.

This could be a series of books, as long but not as tedious, as the
Chronicles of Barsetshire.

Patrick Moore, who actually read the Chronicles of Barsetshire but wouldn't
do it now.

just a FYI to any interested party, the bike ran through my hands...there is a

[RBW] Re: Fenderless Sam: Snoqualmie or Barlow Pass?

2017-12-24 Thread tc
Thanks Drew, good to know you've actually done it, albeit with Racers.
Theoretically 44's should work on a rim as narrow as 17mm per this Maxxis
article,
THE RIGHT TYRE WIDTH ON THE RIGHT RIM WIDTH
On

ibob I found this post by Rod Holland
,
who mounted Snoqualmie EL's on a 17.5mm rim and they measured only 40.49mm
wide...which width-wise would fit no problem. I guess his narrow width
measurement isn't so surprising given the narrow rim. Don't know his
pressure nor tire height, but I would imagine all that material has to go
somewhere, and that would be 'up', as in height. Nor do I know the diff in
width/height of EL's compared to standard.

After the hustle-bustle of the holidays are over I will try to find out
what the tire profile measurements are for standard Snoqualmie's on a
18-19mm rim and see if they'd fit under my R559's. I'm thinking the height
might be the killer there.
