Re: [RBW] It looked like just a little stick...

2018-01-03 Thread Patrick Moore
No photos came through.

I busted a very nice Microshift road rd on the Fargo thanks to a stick; not
only shattered the cage, but bent the hangar inward fully 90*, so couldn't
remove the rd and singlespeed home; had to walk. Bike shop fixed the
hangar, but the MS rd was beyond redemption. Sad, because of all the rds
I've used, this was the very nicest shifting bar none, and put to shame the
7410 that replaced it (I use the 7410 because it's cool on a dirt bike, and
contrary in a perverse sort of way -- actually, the 7410 shifts 14-27 just
fine, but requires a bit more learning the technique; the MS was just plain
easy).

[RBW] Know Anybody in Lake Nacimiento?

2018-01-03 Thread Eric Norris
I’mm scouting out the route for my 2018 400-mile bike to work at the end of
April, and I wonder if anybody on this list lives in or has a friend in Lake
Nacimiento? I would love to find a bed to sleep on for one night, but
everything online is in the “rent our estate” price range.

If you know someone with a bed (or a sofa) and a shower to share with a tired

Patrick,

I am currently riding a bike with the knobby Pumpkin Ridge 650B x 42s here
in Japan (check both the @compasscycle and @bikequarterly Instagram for
some photos). I love the tires for the rides we are doing here in the
winter. Of course, we have to weigh the issues of mold costs and the need
to keep all these different products in stock, but your dream tire and mine

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse "went to go-fast 700c rando machines many years ago for a good reason"?

2018-01-03 Thread Jan Heine
Good question, John. It took some time to dig out all that data from the
many tire tests we did. We never tried to show that our Compass tires were
fastest – in fact, when we first tested tires, we didn't even sell tires. I
pulled together the data...

Here are our roll-down tests:

Compass Extralight: 25.3 seconds
Compass Standard: 26.7 seconds
Michelin Pro2 Race: 26.8 seconds
Grand Bois Hetre: 27.1 seconds
Panaracer Pasela (non-Tourguard): 27.3 seconds
Schwalbe Marathon: 28.3 seconds
Rolly-Poly: 28.5 seconds
Maxy-Fasty: 29.8 seconds
Nifty-Swifty: 30.6 seconds

Small differences between tires don't mean much with real-road testing:
there is always some noise, and our calibration for different temperatures
on different test days may introduce a slight error. We also didn't test
the Compass tires in our roll-down tests – they weren't available yet back
then – but we tested other tires that performed identical in later track
tests, which allows us to infer their performance.

What this means is that it's impossible to say whether a Michelin Pro2 Race
or a Compass Standard is faster... but you can say that you'll be
significantly faster on a Compass Standard than on a Marathon.

To check out methodology, we also tested tires on a track (paved, not
wooden) with a power meter. We didn't test all tire models, but we did test
the following tires on the same day, at 27.78 km/h (17.3 mph). This means
that the conditions were exactly the same, which reduces the 'noise'
considerably:

- Compass standard: 157.8 W
- Schwalbe Marathon: 167.6 W
- Rivendell Rolly-Poly: 168.5 W

These results confirmed what we found in our roll-down tests, and since
they were done at a constant speed, it's easy to see what this means in a
real-world setting: To keep up on the rider with the first tire, a rider on
the third tire must put out 7% more power. That is a huge difference – if
you have two riders of identical fitness, the rider on the slower tires
would be unable to keep up. And the 'standard' Compass tire isn't even the
fastest tire we've tested - you can gain an extra 5% over that... If you go
much faster than 17.3 mph, the difference will be smaller - wind resistance
becomes more important – but if you go slower, the difference will be
larger. That is why for most of us, tires make the biggest difference in
the performance of our bikes.

Re: [RBW] Bar wrap direction

Good questions. I should have noted that I’m talking about standard drop bars
and brake levers with hoods. The tape ends at the brake lever and runs up the
side of the body. I orient the wrap direction so that the two halves end on
each side of the lever body. If I want to ensure no gaps, I use a short piece
of tape run at a bit of an angle from one side of the lever body to the other.
The brake hood covers all the ends and holds them in place. I have also removed
the brake lever body, leaving the clamp band in place, taped the bar, then
installed the brake lever on top of the tape. It only works with thin tape, and
some levers make that easier than others. If you don’t have hoods on the brake
levers, you could try that.

[RBW] Re: Head Badge

2018-01-03 Thread KenP
The headbadge on my Appaloosa was attached loosely with double-backed foam
tape. The curvature of the headbadge was a little wavy contributing to the
looseness of the badge which bumped off without any damage to the paint or
the badge. Just a gentle tug and it was off. Rivendell sent me some
double-backed automotive tape that was too thin to fill the waviness gap
between the badge and the headtube. I found some clear and thick Gorilla
brand double-sided indoor/outdoor mounting tape from the local hardware
store, then attached it to the badge, trimmed the excess, and after
cleaning and measuring where to put it back on the bike, attached it to the
headtube and taped it in place with masking tape for a day. I had cleaned
the badge and headtube with Coleman camp fuel.
If ever the badge needs to come off, fishing-line or dental-floss would
probably do the trick.
The headbadges on earlier Rivendells I have owned were attached more
firmly--one by glue and another by screws, and would have been difficult to
take off for a repaint.

I do remember the your original tests showing these to be slower. Also,
the original tests had the Pasela with a low resistance, about the same as
the Grand Bois in it's size.

Can you compare the resistance of a Compass tire to these, to allow one to
validate your claims?? I do not your claims, based on the casing
differences, but a little validation goes a long way. Perhaps include the
resistance of a slower tire so one can see the Compass improvement, e.g.
X = Compass
Y = GB or Pasels
Z = slower tire with a resistance of Y + (Y-X)

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse "went to go-fast 700c rando machines many years ago for a good reason"?

2018-01-03 Thread Jan Heine
P.S.: Tires like the Marathons and others mentioned previously serve a real
need in the tire world, too. It's not that one tire is better than the
other - it all depends on what you need in a tire. If you are riding half a
mile to the train station, as many Germans do, a flat tire will have you
miss the train. A Marathon will be a little slower and ride more harshly
over the bumps, but you'll never notice that on your 5-minute ride. A
Compass tire makes no sense in that scenario. Or if you plan a long ride on
the shoulder of busy highways that are full of steel wires from exploded
truck tires, you may want to trade speed and comfort for puncture
protection.

That said, as we go with wider tires, the risk of flats is much-reduced. A
42 mm tire at 40 psi simply rolls over a piece of glass that would puncture
a 23 mm tire at 100 psi. And if you ride on the scenic backroads that see
little travel, then you'll encounter far less debris, too.

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse "went to go-fast 700c rando machines many years ago for a good reason"?

2018-01-03 Thread Jan Heine
We did test Marathons, Rolly-Polies, Maxy-Fasties and Nifty-Swifties. All
these were among the slower tires we tested. That shouldn't come as a
surprise – these tires weren't designed as performance tires, so we only
tested them to see how much you'd gain by going to high-performance tires.
The answer is 'a lot' - especially if you ride at lower speeds than pro
racers, who are more limited by aerodynamics than the rest of us.

Hetres were designed based on the results of our first tire tests, so they
performed quite well. We then developed our Compass tires together with the
engineers at Panaracer (who make Compass tires to our exclusive
specifications). We used everything we'd learned from the Hetres and other
Grand Bois tires (also made by Panaracer), to take comfort, speed and grip
to the next level. We bench-marked these against tires like the Vittoria
Open CX Corsa. Our testing indicates that the goal was achieved.

It has been exciting to work with a tire maker who not only has the
resources to develop great tires, but also has been willing to work closely
with us to turn the results of our tests into actual tires we can ride. The
rest of the tire industry is only slowly waking up to the fact that riders
in the real world want and need wide tires that don't have sturdy 'touring'
casings, but that offer the performance and comfort you can only get with a
high-performance casing.

Re: [RBW] ENO eccentric rear hub

2018-01-03 Thread Patrick Moore
It's easier to remove and install with vertical dropouts -- which is made
to fit -- than removing or installing a standard hub from/in horizontals
or, more so, track ends. Only, once you get the axle into the verticals,
you have to rotate the hub to tension the chain. But this is very easy;
grab the wheel and pull or push as needed.

Note that the ENO eccentric will take up slack rotated tire-up or rotated
tire-down. Tire up is easier, since the weight of the bike tends to push
down on the axle, thus rotate the hub up. This may be all very well, unless
so rotating hub and tire up brings the tire too close to the seatstay
bridge -- I had this problem and had to deliberately arrange for the hub to
rotate down to ensure sufficient clearance.

Also, the rotation of the hub makes the rim move; you'll have to position
your rear brake pads (in the event) to a given hub/rim position, and this
is why (IME with 2 ENOs) it's best to either use just one cog, or, if you
use 2 (and the eccentric can manage at most 2 teeth, IIRC) dispense with
the rear rim brake (and use a fixed drive train or double front brakes, as
on trikes).

Thanks for the advice. Like you said, you are 'local' to them so it's
easier to develop a relationship.

It's hard to see how you could do such a large cash outlay without having
concrete plans on how to use it up or some understanding on how to use it.

One nice RBW did was to offer a 20% discount through 12/29/17, essentially
the same deal. I wonder if they are interested in say a $500 cash at EOY
for a $600 credit. Perhaps the $500 is too small.

[RBW] Re: How to mount B tail light on this rack?

2018-01-03 Thread somervillebikes
Hi Ash,

I used two p-clamps on my Burley Piccolo rack to mount a Planet Bike
taillight. I found the taillight acted as a lever arm and kept rotating
downward. The solution was to wrap a small piece of inner tube over the
rack before installing the p-clamps. Of course, you can just rubber-lined
p-clamps from the get-go and avoid the problem.

Best,

Anton

[RBW] Re: Did any listers accept the free money Riv was offering at the end of 2017?

2018-01-03 Thread Bill Lindsay
No notion of a time limit ever came up with me. Everybody at Riv knows I'm
using my credit when I'm buying things, and I'm friendly with them all. If
any of them had any reason to request that I use it, I'm sure they would
say something. Dave, in particular, is the one who sweats the cash-flow
details the most. He'd call me and tell me to try to get it off the books
if he needed me to do so. If they do it again next year and you are
tempted, you should call Dave and talk about it. If you knew for a fact
that you would sit on your credit for years and years with no intention to
use it at all, I suspect they wouldn't want to get into that. If you need
to have detailed black and white terms in writing and need to avoid talking
to them, then it's probably not the best thing for you. I spend a fair bit
there, so they know it's going to get used.

[RBW] Did any listers accept the free money Riv was offering at the end of 2017?

2018-01-03 Thread Bill Lindsay
One of the last BLUG posts for the year invited folks to buy a $6000 Riv
store credit for $5000. This helps the RBW cashflow and is way cheaper to
Riv than a line of credit. For those fortunate enough to take them up on
it save a ton of money, provided they can think of ways to spend it.

I did it last year, and haven't quite spent it all yet. Did any listers
take the free money this year?

I do totally agree. The stories, pictures, reports of adventures and
discoveries, those were and are the things I really appreciate.

I am just so glad to know she is ok, riding her bike, enjoying life even
with the seemingly inevitable challenges and surprises that we all face at
times. I hope she keeps writing and hope as well she feels free to write
whatever means the most to her. It was interesting to hear her lack of
interest in all of the new and muddled tech in the bike world as well as
her going to film versus digital.

Given time, luck, thought... our worlds converge.

I've been slow in getting around to putting my Rosco Bubbe v2 on the market
- if it's interesting, I'll gather more details for you. It's the one
officially sized as a 55.5 but with 66cm effective top tube:

Original details from RBW here:

Some pics from a ride last year: https://goo.gl/photos/m8aYDSHRvVWZ7m558

Still built up the same, except front racks/basket have been removed - I'd
sell the frameset up to complete build.

[RBW] Re: ENO eccentric rear hub

2018-01-03 Thread lconley
You must determine whether you want the eccentric forward or rearward (or
if you have the option of positioning it forward or rearward) - this
determines chain length (the rearward position can use a longer chain). I
used it on bicycles (Sam H and Roscoe Bubbe) where I wanted more tire
clearance, so it was rearward for me. Then you need to determine if you
want the eccentric up or down. Again more tire clearance meant downward.
Also the beauty of the down rearward position (or front upward) was that
the weight of the bicycle tensioned the chain - I positioned the eccentric
down and back, inserted into the dropout with the bike upright and let the
bicycle down onto the ground - the weight of the bicycle rotated the
eccentric back and down a little further, then I just tightened the bolts.
