[RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh with drop bars?

2018-01-11 Thread Harald Kliems
Ken:
That's really interesting. Your "before" experience very much matches mine
-- I've tried North Road, flat bars, bar ends, Ergon grips, but nothing
ever was truly comfortable. And I've tried it on bikes with different kinds
of fit, from a Dahon folder, a Surly fat bike, to a Gunnar Roadie. Looking
at your Flickr stream and comparing the (beautifully built up!) HHH and
your single bikes, it looks like the saddle-to-bar height is quite
different, with the HHH putting the bars several inches above the saddle,
whereas on your singles bars and saddles seem to be roughly level. May that
explain the difference? I'm not sure if I ever tried non-drop-bars on a
bike where the handlebars were much above the saddle (partly because there
just aren't that many non-custom bikes where that is even possible if
you're 6'5"...).

I shall study the HHH geometry charts more closely and at some point also
shoot an email to Rivendell to see what they have to say on the topic.

Thanks for sharing your perspective and the offer for a test ride!

 Harald.

[RBW] Re: NYC 5 Boro ride

2018-01-11 Thread David Scelfo
Its something everyone should do once. I’ve done it twice which is how I came
to that conclusion. As everyone said, half pushin, half pedaling. Very unique
perspective of the city though so many parts where I said “I can't believe
Im riding my bike here!”

Biggest challenge is there are so many non-cyclists with no cycling etiquette
and kids not paying attention etc that there are some sketchy moments,
especially sharp turns.

Suggestions:
Dont stop at rest areas if you dont have to
Narrower handlebars
Patience

[RBW] Re: My new Cheviot

2018-01-11 Thread Joe Bernard
Yes indeed, Adam, and you're already set up for it. You'll need a single cog
and Gear Clamps or spacers (Riv has everything), tensioner, and shorten the
chain a bit (8-speed. If you have a 9 that won't work). The Paul Melvin acts
like the cage on a regular derailer, and has a bit of float in the top pulley
like Shimano mechs..it'll handle front shifts just fine. I presume the cheaper
Alfine tensioner is the same.

I'm leaning this way after doing another neighborhood ride this evening. I did
laps yesterday in the big ring, then tried the smaller ring this time and
quickly realized I'm going to wish I could switch easily between them to save
my back. One thing I'd forgotten about when mashing the big ring last night is
that I have an old injury that gets tweaked if I really overdo the
standing/mashing thing. The twinge I felt this morning reminded me!

I really want to keep things simple and have the "just ride" experience of
singlespeeding without all the shift-shift-shift - I have other bikes for that,
but the terrain around here is up/down enough that I'm going to need front
shifts. I have a nice vintage Dura-Ace mech around here somewhere that might
work. The project continues!

[RBW] Re: Adam's Chev on the BLUG

2018-01-11 Thread adam leibow
Sean,

Sorry for the delay in reply. I have the large wald basket, which I guess
rivbike.com calls "huge." I recommend this size. The medium feels small and
my girlfriend would tell you it's not big enough (she has it on her
Atlantis) for commuting and general use. The Large/Huge (whatever you want
to call it) is the sweet spot IMO where you can fit a ton of stuff in it,
almost to the point where you probably risk hurting/bending your smaller
nitto rack if you overfill it with heavy stuff. This is why I have the
marks rack with double struts + irish strap connecting the tombstone on the
rack to the bars for added support. Something like a pass and stow would be
able to handle a heavier load with more confidence but looks less elegant
and adds even more weight to the total ride.

Additionally, if you ever bike camp, the medium won't be big enough by a
longshot IME. My fav setup for a s24o would be the combo of the marks rack
with large/huge basket and large sackville (pictured on my cheviot) plus a
large saddlebag like a Makeshifter outback or Ultra Swift Fabios chest or
w/e it's called.

The reason I am hesitant to call the large "huge" (as Rivendell does) is
there exists an even larger size, "giant," which is truly huge and might be
confused as being the "huge" Riv sells, were you to ask for the "huge" at
your local bike store.

Happy Trails

Adam

[RBW] Re: NYC 5 Boro ride

2018-01-11 Thread ascpgh
My wife and I rode it a few years ago. We stayed overnight in Newark, drove
to Staten Island in the morning and rode the ferry over to Battery Park
(just like in the movie Working Girl). When the ride finished, in Staten
Island, we were able to enjoy a bit of the finish line festival then just
walk/ride to the car and head out, well ahead of folks who stayed in the
city and had to take the ferry back then drive out of Manhattan.

It was slow rolling (walking) until we made it to Wall Street and got to
pedal. Be prepared for your own water and food. The rest stops are
inundated with at least a third of the 30,000 like-minded cyclist riding
that day. We were way behind on hydration and food as we were heading out
the Gowanus Expressway and my wife being the lesser rider of us, required
the seatpost push to power on for those last miles and the public commerce
in park at the Verrazano Narrows bridge. Best $5 Gatorade I'd ever had.

It was way fun from a physical geography perspective and having a romp in
NYC you can't get otherwise. As a bike ride alone it's a bit cumbersome
with the participants.

The Romulus came in a canti version. It was basically an inexpensive

I got mine at Performance many years ago. Currently there are several

That 30 lbs of case weight does include a lot of protection for the bike.
Look for cases with wheels & handles so you can easily roll it around
rather than trying to carry it.

Pro tip on case measurements: Clerks have been know to have difficulty
getting the correct dimensions when wrestling with large boxes. Get some
big stencils, at least 4", & spray paint the dimensions right on the box,
including the total. They see that, it looks official, and they don't have

I bought the Bike Pro soft travel case. My 62cm A. Homer Hilsen fit just fine.
I took it on the plane with me to France for PBP. I checked it at JFK and for
some reason, did not have to pay a fee (but the American website was pretty
clear that bikes were at least $150 if not oversized.) Since we stayed in
Europe for a while, I shipped it back home in the case via Bike Flights. It
cost me $220 from Paris to Connecticut and they picked it up at the hotel.

Yes, the 130" is Fed Ex & UPS ground. Last time I looked into taking my
case on United it was some horrendous cost like $300 each flight or
something else prohibitive. Beyond 62" airlines call it oversize & the
rate skyrockets.

You are correct that airlines limit is 62" which is a large suitcase size,
nowhere big enough for a bike (unless Bike Friday or similar folder that
goes into the 62" case). I've not used Southwest or Jet Blue but have
heard they take bikes at a reasonable cost. Not sure what the packing
requirements are though. Worth checking on.

[RBW] Re: Creaky Cranks, Cranky Cranker

2018-01-11 Thread Garth

Just get a new crank , almost anything is better than an XD. Even the
modest Origin8 110 BCD single/double crank for $50 is better than those.

As for those silly chainring "devices" that don't qualify as a "tool"
because tools work, the Park ones at least are so ill fitting that I
can see how people would strip the bolt. It's a "devise" of futility, and
Park keeps making the same darn thing, unimproved, decade after decade
after decade.

Yeah ... be done with it new crank.

[RBW] Re: Cumil the Peeper sold me a Canti-Sam frameset

2018-01-11 Thread masmojo
It's very interesting, when I first decided I would breakdown & finally buy a
Rivendell; a Sam seemed like an obvious choice, but at the time they no longer
had any Cantilever braked Sams in my size. Ended up getting a Clementine & then
a used Atantis. Then the Joe Appaloosa came out & it was a bit of a head
scratcher, because even though the geometry of the two is different it
certainly seemed like it was going to cannibalize Sam sales. So Sams having
Cantis now makes me wonder about the future of the Joe Appaloosa, because some
time back Grant hinted that there was going to be a "slimming" of models. This
hints at that I think!?

Sardonic grin.
— Based on timing of the work I did and being creak free before that work, I
can eliminate pedals and everything save chainring bolts, crank arms, and bb
(replaced BB and changed chainrings).
— After the standard second tightening of the crank arms, noise is down or gone
(hard to tell with today’s ride in the crunchy snow).

I still wish there was a simpler system than that nutty bolt set-up.

[RBW] Sackvilke bartube questions?

2018-01-11 Thread RichS
Hi Lum,

I have the older Brand V bartube sack which I looks to be functionally the same
as the Sackville version. Mine is not waterproof or very water resistant but
hopefully the Sackville has some water repellent properties.

The bag is quite spacious for its size. Yes, it does sag if you don’t tie the
ends to the hbars. That works just fine for me; plus securing the bag elongates
and gives the bag a touch of firmness which makes access easier.

Hope you like yours!

[RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh with drop bars?

2018-01-11 Thread Ken Yokanovich
>From the perspective of a HubbuHubbuH owner, drop bar preferrer, upright
bar skeptic.

I've got a couple of other bikes set up with Albatross bars, tried
different flavors of mustache bars on different bikes over the years. I've
never found myself comfortable for more than an hour and downright
uncomfortable for anything longer than about 50 miles or 3-hours. I have
an older Trek T200 that I have ridden with both drop bars, and most
recently setup with Albatross and it's *okay*, never been an
extraordinarily comfortable bike for me, despite it's similar fit
dimensions to other single bikes.

When I ordered the HHH, I figured... "what the heck" and started with the
upright Bosco bar thinking I would someday convert to drops if I hated it.
I have to honestly say, I think I REALLY like the upright bars on the
HubbuHubbuH. I took a long tour this summer on it with my two daughters
and spent MANY hours in the saddle and didn't ever experience any hand
and/or arm discomfort, I was shocked. My biggest anxiety prior to the trip
was concern that I'd get down the road on something like day 2 and *hate *the
handlebar... This stuck in my head prior to leaving, even more than the
concerns I had about heading off for a week fully loaded with my daughters.

The geometry images http://hubbuhubbuh.tumblr.com/ may not be the final
geometry(?), but do indicate LONG top tube reach designed for an upright
bar. Maybe one of those dimensions would fit with your sweet spot.I
realize that my experience and upright bar proselytizing may not convince
you to drop a big chunk of money on something you don't like. I will offer
this, if you find yourself in the Twin Cities area... contact me off list
and I'd be happy to make arrangements so that you can go for a test ride on my
size Medium .

[RBW] Hubbuhubbuh with drop bars?

2018-01-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
I’ve set up my Captain fit on road tandems to essentially match my set up on
road bikes. My HHH is set up upright but the approach should hold just fine if
you are careful with the numbers and make sure you get a set up that matches
your single bike fit.

Riv has the CAD like drawing for the frame. You should be able to draw your
single bike set up on top of the captain area and see exactly where you would
be.

Hi everyone:
This is my first post in the group -- some of you may recognize my name
from the iBOB or 650B lists, though. I am not yet an RBW Owner. But I am in
the market for a tandem, and the HHH seems like a wonderful option. The
only major concern I have: Will I be able to set it up with drop bars? My
goal here is not to make it racier or something like that; it's just that
my wrists do not get along with anything that's not a drop bar. I was
wondering if anyone here has set up their HHH with drop bars and how they
like it. Looking at the geometry charts, I don't see any obvious issues (I
am 6'5" and therefore the larger reach of drop bars may actually be a
positive). But I'm by no means a tandem expert and I'd be curious to hear
some first-hand experiences. Or well-informed opinions.
Thanks,

"I’m really hoping I don’t like it."

Well good luck with that! It's a great ride: A thing I didn't even notice until
I thought about it this morning is how easy it was to just hop on and go
without thinking about "this is the first time on a new bike." That's a very
undersold aspect of the handling Grant dials into his frames, there's no
surprises. Add in the SS deal where there's no gear to shift into for a proper
send off, and you have the very essence of Just Ride.

Another thing I noticed about having a lugged Riv mixte: Dropping that toptube
really opens up the upper seattube area so you fully appreciate the seat lug
(love the heart) and RBW panel. Check it out.

I posted about my recent visit to Crust HQ on ibob and 650B, but didn't
post it here. Bottom line: Matt is an awesome guy and true bike nerd, and
when you talk to him in person there is nothing about Crust that feels like
a hipster inside joke.

He's building up a Lightning Bolt for me as we speak. I think my
conversation with him happened before this PLP interview, but I mentioned
that I own an Atlantis and he started gushing about Rivendell. He's a big
fan, from what I gather.

In person, the Crust fames are gorgeous, and the workmanship appears to be
outstanding. I know he makes multiple trips over there for each batch.

to your impressions of the 2 speed drivetrain.
Happy trails,
Marc

[RBW] Sackvilke bartube questions?

I made a coroplast stiffener for mine, it would still be nice without it, maybe
even better.

[RBW] Re: Traveling with your bike

2018-01-11 Thread Ben Miller
Interesting ideas guys.

I will look into the Amtrak idea.

Doug, are you sure about 130"? It seems airlines are mostly at 62
dimensional inches (length+height+width). 130 dimensional inches would be a
BIG box. The one I'm using to ship this sold bike is 81" (42+30+9).

As far as flights vs shipping, JetBlue is only $50, Southwest $75, and
United is $100 (but I really dislike United, so I'm not sure about that
one). Those are all options and give or take a BikeFlights shipment price
(assuming I can get it under their box size limits, as Eric points out).

Any ideas on the best cases for large frames?
