[RBW] Re: Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Inevitably when I run an extra set of wheels for a bike, I end up buying
another frame to go with the wheels. Wheels are the gateway drug for N+1.

[RBW] Re: FS Sackville and Brooks

2018-03-28 Thread Max S
Let me know if this is breaching etiquette somehow, but... If someone wants a
Medium Sackville but in a different colorway, maybe we can do a 3-way trade –
I’ve got a Medium in olive-ish (with a leather bottom, no less!) and the pouch,
that I wouldn’t mind trading for a gray. So, if you want a Med Sackville in
that color, buy it from me and I promise to then turn around and buy this gray
one! I need / want a Med Sackville, so this would only really work as a trade.

I have a Cowchipper on my Roadeo and like it a lot. I went nuts and used a
Woodchipper on my road bikes for a while. They are really funky with a
super wide flare. I've done double centuries with the Woodchipper and
never felt like I was miserable in the headwinds because of the bars. Only
because I was miserable :). I loved climbing with the Woodchippers because
it felt like I had lots of leverage.

You can't really see the flare from this angle, but here's a picture with
the bars:

[RBW] Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-28 Thread tc
I was reading this great article
on

"Chasing Mailboxes" about Kevin Turinsky and his Atlantis. He mentioned he
kept 3 sets of wheels for it to exploit the frame's versatility.

That got me to thinking, how many people actually do that? It seems like
such a great idea for the right frame/fork ... and the Atlantis seems to be
that bike for a lot of people. I think the Hunq, or Ogre, or Cross-Check,
or Fargo, or Monster Cross might be that frame for some.

The $$ savings would be great.

If you don't race, if you don't do jumps, or figure yourself a weight
weenie, what the heck -- why not?

I guess it might be a hassle to go back and forth between a SS and a
multi-speed setup on the same frame, so there's that...esp. if you found
you liked to do both regularly.

I guess for most of us, we can't get away from "n+1", so there's that.

Anyway, just pondering.

Good night, all...

Tom

[RBW] Re: Bar-swapping: Drops out, Jitensha bars in

2018-03-28 Thread Ron Mc
Really like how the colors blended, and the bag ties them together. Yes,
Paul brake levers are the very best.

Everybody needs at least one bike with upright bars, but the angles on this
bar shape makes for totally relaxed arms and wrists - and great control - I
can corner very hard on this bike.

Ahearne map bars with a home-brewed aero extension using a Nitto 2-70 lamp
holder and mountain bar ends.

Came up with these over our wet winter on the mag trainer to get some
variable muscle usage, but after the weather broke and I got them on the
greenway and downtown streets, don't know how I lived without them - I have
5 hand positions - hook just in front of the cork; grab the bend; resting
on bar with thumbs hooked; hooking solid on red bar ends; aero tuck
grabbing bar ends (I've had it out in 20 kt wind).

A week on the trainer also gave me enough time to perfectly dial in the two
rotation points.

Map bars are basically the Jitensha touring bars with an extra inch on each
end.

I mentioned the leather wraps when I posted this mod earlier, but they came
from India via etsy for
$25. https://www.tripmachinecompany.com/collections/handlebar-accessories
They're intended for motorcycle grips, but are just long enough to do the
mid portions of a Jitensha or Map bar.

Tim, thanks for the kind words. I like yours too--it appears we have the
same exact frame! I like to tinker with my builds, the Sam is so versatile
so I'm constantly experimenting.

I may have to pick up a pair of Barlow EL's for it--I keep hearing people
like you say they're the perfect match. I had Bon Jon's (standard casing)
on it which I'm contributing to the Roadini I'm building up for my wife.
The Cazaderos are just okay.

Thx!

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-28 Thread Austin
I'm one who's just now experimenting with upright bars for the first
time--the Albastache's I picked up during the hail mary that are now on my
Sam. I found experimenting with a shorter stem made things a bit more
comfortable so I taped them up last night. Teal Newbaums with 1 coat of
amber shellac in the photos. I was hoping the tape would be more olive
green than it turned out. I added a second coat of shellac tonight and they
are now more hunter green. I like it enough to live with it. It was my
first time using cotton tape and twine--not as clean as Mark does it in his
video, but I'm happy for a first try.

I bought the 62cm frame from Riv in 2016. Other bits on this are a 46/30
IRD crankset with a 11-36 9-speed cassette, 700x42 Cazaderos on A23's with
Tektro Calipers. Less roady for now, as I wanted a dedicated gravel/fire
road bike, though a tire swap is all I need to make it road-ready.

Maybe it's all psychological, but the shorter stem seemed to make the
steering a little quicker which is okay--I prefer a sporty, lively ride.

Photos of the lastest build with some older, evolutionary shots from the
last 2 years.

Patrick, I'm not sure if mine was one that you had commented on but if so I
thank you for the compliment. Mine was purchased in 2016. It was the
version prior to the canti Sam available now. The paint on mine is a stock
color. More of a light blue and cream two tone. Looks amazing in person. I
heard the orange one is much faster. (wink wink) One recommendation I
learned about on this board was to go with the Compass Barlow Pass tires
with extra light casing. I will say without a shadow of a doubt that those
tires are the best riding tires I have ever had the pleasure to experience.
They are just about perfect for the Sam. This is a great bike for its
versatility. I am enjoying it so much now that I have it as my main road
bike. Thats not to say I wouldn't enjoy it any less had I set it up again
with the Albatross bars.

[RBW] OT FS/FT: Leica/Leitz Wetzlar Summicron-C 40mm f2 lens for Leica/Minolta CL camera

2018-03-28 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
The recent Leica diversion on the MIT Atlantis thread just triggered an
idea... and although off topic, not by far considering the Riv & film
photography connection and my proposed arrangement:

For those of you that shoot film and/or collect cameras/Leica stuff, anyone
interested in buying a Leica/Leitz Summicron-C 40mm f2 lens through
purchase and exchange of a Rivendell gift certificate? My bike budget has
completely dried up and I haven't placed a new order with Riv in over year
(aside from a recent hail mary.) I have a few simmering ideas but no funds
to execute so I'm now thinking it's time to let this lens go to help fund
some future bike projects and further support Riv at the same time. A Riv
gift certificate combined with my hail mary and remaining rivendollars
would be a huge help and keep the funds earmarked for a Riv project rather
than get siphoned for other necessary expenses.

The lens is originally for the Leica/Minolta collab CL camera from the
80's but fits several other M mount bodies (although framelines may not be
exact for those not specd for 40mm lenses.) I don't have a CL camera body
(or any other M mount for that matter) to go with it and although I
intended to obtain one years ago my interest in film faded and the project
fell to the wayside. I also became concerned about investing in an older
CL body and then discovered Voigtlander Bessa R3 models feature 40mm
framelines and 1:1 magnification which I thought would have made a great
combo but was still out of my league and just never came to fruition. As
previously noted, I never got back into shooting film like I had thought
and just don't see it happening anytime soon with limited time/funds having
recently become a first time father (8 months now) but if I ever do manage
it I still have a couple old mechanical, fixed lens rangefinders and a
Minolta X-700 to mess around with.

I won't attempt to rate the condition of the lens having never used it and
being far from an expert on such matters but it's clean with no cosmetic or
structural damage and has been safely stored indoors with caps on both ends
and comes with retractable rubber lens hood and a 5.5 series filter.)

I actually found the lens years ago sitting on a park bench next to a lake
I regularly fished when I lived nearby. I was unsuccessful in finding the
owner who had unfortunately left it behind that day and even kept an eye
out for anyone shooting with a camera every time I fished or visited
that part of the park thereafter. I eventually brought the lens to a local
camera shop but they had no record of it in their system through serial
# and was otherwise unable to arrange an amicable sale or trade (although
they had several CL bodies available they seemed highly overpriced and they
had no interest in offering any credit for trading any of my other cameras
or equipment to offset some of the cost of a CL body to go with the lens.)

I've searched ebay (sold listings, not asking prices) and found the same
exact lenses selling for $400-$700+

I'm asking $300 in form of a Riv gift certificate and I'll cover shipping.

No photos available at the moment but I'll upload a couple later and/or
will provide pics directly to anyone upon request.

Also open to other offers/interesting trades.

Thanks,
Brian Cole

Agreed, excellent summation!

Hopefully it is ok with Eamon to use his notes when studying for the

Anyway, I do applaud Riv for sticking to its design convictions and
direction. I kind of wish I needed the new Atlantis! But my Appaloosa is
working really well for me. That said, I do look forward to studying the
new catalog, the next chapter in a story I truly like and follow.

[RBW] Bar-swapping: Drops out, Jitensha bars in

2018-03-28 Thread Bill Lindsay

Handlebar swapping is one of those eternally noble pursuits. Like many of
you, all paths tend to lead back to drops, but still I try to keep open
minded about things. For context, I think Noodles are fantastic, and I
have Noodles or Soba Noodles on several bikes. I also really love Compass
Maes Parallel, which I have on one bike and which will appear on my next
build. The latest "new" handlebar I've tried and LOVED is the Salsa
Cowchipper on my new Monster Cross. These are really great for on-road and
off-road. I'm a big fan. I suspect I'll be miserable if I'm caught in a
stiff headwind, but aside from that suspicion I give them high marks.

This handlebar swap was enabled by my practice to jump on deals when they
present themselves. My east bay home-skillet, Justin sold on the list a
Jitensha bar and a Noodle, at a really good price, so I snapped them up
with no real plans for either. At another time I picked up a pair of Paul
Canti-Brakelevers at a really good price. I have lots of shifters on-hand,
including a set of IRD thumbies from Riv. I always have at least five or
six different colors of Newbaums ready to go. I was already stealing the
swank wheelset from my BART bike to go onto my new Monster Cross. So, I
decided to convert my Rosco Bubbe Road to more of a cafe-bike,

Off came:
Noodle 46 bars
SRAM S500 levers
Shimano 9sp barcons
Dura Ace Rear der
HED Belgium/Dura Ace Wheelset

On went:
Jitensha bars
Paul brakelevers
IRD friction thumbies
Green Newbaums
Twin-hollow 6sp freewheel wheelset

So far, so good. I love how thin the clamp is on the Paul levers, so it's
like the handlebar tap is one continuous wrap. The slight sweep of the
Jitensha bars feels good on the wrists in a still pretty aggressive
position. My morning commute always includes stopping for a coffee and
then riding one-handed to the BART train, and it's FAR easier to get on the
saddle and start one-handed with this bar. This configuration might stick
on a dedicated commute bike.

Alright - but which iteration of the M4 was king? The original M4 or one of the
post M5 reissued M4 models? And if so which one?

This is a slippery slope for sure!

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-28 Thread adam leibow
the quoted clearance with the new canti sams is 47mm. i think the wtb
riddler might be the perfect tire for this bike. i have a new one in sage &
58 which has been a blast and the perfect commuter. i have learned what the
OP has said about straddling niches is slightly true. it's not as
light/nimble as my new titanium roadbike with a more aggressive position,
25mm tires, & carbon fork, for example, and it's not as capable off road as
my crust evasion with 2.8" tires and discs, but it's still really fun to
ride, and probably the best when i don't know what kind of ride i want to
do, or where i want to end up, just that i need to get outside. i see a lot
of them all over san francisco and the east bay.

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-28 Thread Reid Echols
My canti Sam (64cm) clears 48 Soma Vitesse tires with ease, if not with
fenders. I like to run it with 42-43s usually though.

Currently it's a single speed with Bruce Gordon rock n' roads, a heavy duty
mountain wheelset I had from another build, v-brakes, and flipped albas.
Very fun for "path racing" around the lake here in Austin.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-28 Thread Trenker

I think some of you are missing the main point.

The extra-long chainstay is kind of like the foot-long hot dog.

Now let’s say you’ve got a big strong man, maybe he’s been on a diet and
he’s kind of angry because of that; to him, the foot-long hot dog makes
perfect sense. Just like it makes sense to have extra-long chainstays for
taller riders, so all of their weight isn’t over that back wheel.

Then imagine you’ve got a little kid, and you take him to the fair. He sees
the foot-long hot dog, and he wants it. He doesn’t need a foot-long hot
dog, but it’s kind of cute if he gets it, maybe he doesn’t even eat the
whole thing and a seagull gets part of it. No harm done, Jimmy got what he
wanted and had a nice day at the fair, maybe he’ll remember it all his
life.

I don’t know if the inventor of the foot-long hot dog became rich or
famous; but his/her invention did, and maybe a hundred years from now the
extra-long chainstay will enjoy the same acclaim. You could call it moving
the rear wheel back, or if you want to be more positive, you could call it
moving the rest of the bike forward.

On the other hand, you have to wonder why they didn’t go with extra-long
seatstays instead…

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-28 Thread Carla Waugh
My 55cm Sam is a favorite of mine because it’s just plain comfortable. I have a
standard drop bar build with a EDelux light and hub combo. The reason I grab
this bike almost every time is it’s versatility. I can ride on pavement, grass
or light gravel with Compass tires. The parts Riv put on my Sam work very well.
I added a Nitto small front rack and have small to medium bags and basket to
switch between. I have even wondered about reimagining my 650B bike so I might
ride it more. I think it’s time for a Sam club.

[RBW] Atlantis-to-Poster (need not be long thread, just saying this)

2018-03-28 Thread Grant Petersen
Some of these questions or just unclear-confusing-redundancy things, like
why both the JoeAppa and Atla will be made clearer in the catalog.

On another note, this time about the Rivendell - David Lance Goines poster:
DLG used the same printing device (press?) for almost 50 years, and it was
about 50 years old when he got it...as I remember from his telling. Two
years ago it crapped out and he had to get another one, 50 years younger
but still 50 years old or older, made by another maker and I think in
another country. For most of his posters, the newer machine works, he has
been able to get good results, but wouldn't you know it--ours, which
appears to have at most 9 colors in it, actually has 14, according to the
one guy who ought to know, and he's tried and failed three or so times to
get the same results.
I've suggested he dumb it down some to make it easier, it would still look
good, but he doesn't do that, so we've been out of posters for about 3
years. After I read the thing about the extra poster and the number game, I
contacted him again and said, "...still here, still want...wuzzup?" He
assured me he'd try again, and I have no doubt. As I've said before
somewhere: (1) He really likes that poster, he has used it as an example in
articles and stuff where he could have used any poster in his portfolio;
and (2) He likes me and my enthusiasm for the poster---and is about as
Unracery as one can get, with all black clothes, black hat, cane, and
handlebar moustache. He rode a lot in the '70s, and still feels the kinship.

2018-03-28 Thread phil k
I view this board as largely people giving their impressions based on their
own experience. It's what I like about it this board.

It's an amalgamation of everyone's experience that may be helpful to some,
not relevant to others. I'm not sure I detect any mansplaining on this
thread (there aren't any women being patronized, or at least I hope not),
merely people giving their first impressions and speculations based on
little information given and trying to parlay their own experience to how
it would translate to the new Atlantis.

I'm enjoying the various thoughts on this thread. I'm not sure where else I
would be able to find a 9 page thread about the Atlantis.

I really want to buy this Atlantis, but saving up for a wedding at the
moment.

As for being redundant with the Appaloosa, I think the Atlantis will work
better with drop bars. I couldn't use drops comfortably on the Appaloosa,
even with a dirt drop bar. Hopefully, the new Atlantis is still made for
touring loads as well.

If the Appaloosa ends up being redundant, I would DEFINITELY be stoked for
a Made in Taiwan lugged mountain mixte with the Appaloosa fork crown and
head badge...

[RBW] Re: Thomson Elite Seatpost -- 26.8 -- with New Sam H.: Seems... Small...?

2018-03-28 Thread stevef
A couple of things that have helped me in the past with slightly small
posts: Use no-slip instead of grease or use very VERY little grease,
especially where the seatpost clamp is. On one post that wouldn't stop
slipping no matter what I put a piece of clear vinyl framesaver/helicopter
tape where the seat post was clamped. I quit slipping and also made it
easier to tell if it slipped a little. I used a piece that was about 3"
vertically, 1-2" wide.

Also: Where are the Sam and the Atlantis different? I know that the
original Atlantis was a sort of touring/heavy duty all rounder model and
took fatter tires than the original Sam; have the designs started to
converge?

How fat a tire can the current Sams take? Jim's chart says 45, but perhaps
that is out of date?

Is the Atlantis tubing thicker than the Sam's?

On my short list, given my present stable, #1 is the Roadeo; # 2 might just
well be another Sam, with shorter tt relative to st. (I see that the 55 no3
has a 57 eff tt -- my length if I want the bar slightly lower than saddle,
as I would on a Sam.)

[RBW] Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-28 Thread Patrick Moore
There have been photos of quite a few nice Sams on the list recently,
notably Paul Saporito's on the Blug and that slate gray one yesterday. (How
do y'all keep your bikes so damned *clean?*). I gather that the Sam must
be, if not the most popular Riv model, certainly up there with the top 3
(which are??? -- Sam, Atlantis, Appaloosa?).

Particularly interesting is the variety of builds: uprights and drop bars,
touring and commuting with huge Wald baskets, and at least one recent
poster converted his to his main road bike.

I briefly (12 months? 18?) owned a canti Sam, perhaps the original model,
in a 55, but found it straddled my particular niches too much -- wouldn't
take the fat tires I need here, for dirt riding in our river sand; too
beefy to feel as spritely as I want for a pure road bike -- and I had the 2
custom roads anyway. Also, the tt of that model was a bit too long, even
with the slacker (72? 71.5?) sta -- I hear that later models had,
relatively speaking, shorter tts. If mine had taken 50 mm tires and had a
cm off the tt, it would have made a nice bosque bomber that rode well on
pavement. (I think a Sam shod with 38 or 44 Compass extralights would be
very nice, tho' again the tires wouldn't work, for me, in our Rio Grande
river silt.)

So: Am I right about the Sam being among the top 3 most popular models?

And: You Sam owners: how do you build and use yours: errands, dirt, road
...?

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Maybe this made up scenario will explain the point I'm trying to make.
Imagine we're at the outdoor art festival. Individual artists that put
their heart and soul and time and money into their work have it on
display. We walk to one booth where dozens of interested customers are
looking. Most aren't saying anything. Four of us walk up, and have a
look, and all four of us do not like the work we are seeing. None of the
four of us wants to buy any of this stuff. The artist is standing right
there, proudly. Here's what the four of us do:

Person A: nods politely at the artist and walks away to the next booth
Person B: says politely but clearly, so all the people around and the
artist can hear "this work is not for me. I frankly don't see the appeal.
I will not be buying any of this"
Person C: tells the artist and the people around "I'm saddened that
you made this stuff. It makes your earlier work redundant. I admire your
work, and wish you well, but this stuff will not sell, and will damage your
business, and that makes me sad."
Person D: explains to the artist how he would have made this work. I've
been using products like this for 40 years, and I bought one of your pieces
like this before. Let me help you by informing you that this edge should
have fringe, and this gold part should be brass. Improve your products by
following my advice and you will do much better"

All four of these people have the right to say what they want. They are in
public, and "it's a free country". I don't want to silence anybody. Which
one do you want to be, here in public, with dozens or hundreds of silent
observers watching? Be whichever one of those four people you want to
be. I'm making the observation, for myself, that Person D above sounds
like he is a patronizing know-it-all. I'm not trying to silence Person
D. S/he can behave how they like in public. I don't think person B,
person C or person D did anything productive or generous to the artist by
speaking up. That's fine. They are not obligated to help out the artist,
and can say what they want in public.

Negative comments about product X can be totally great, and totally
helpful. If somebody posts "has anybody used product X? what were your
experiences?", sometimes the most positive productive comment will be
"I used product X and it broke in three days. I don't recommend it". A
comment like that can save somebody from a bad decision. Hopefully the
silent observers on this thread will just say "look at those goofy
bike-nerds talking about manners and semantics" and go on with their day.
:)

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-28 Thread Max S
This longer chainstay model is still very much within the dominant design
envelope of a chain driven bicycle. We are, like true devotees, splitting
hairs. But zooming out of the devotee cubby-hole, and taking a slightly more
macro-economic perspective, let’s consider cameras... (see what I did there?)

The Leica M5 was supposed to be an improved version of the iconic M3, but many
Leica fans didn’t go for it. Still, there’s a strong contingent of photogs who
loved it from the get-go. Will the Neu-‘tlantis be the M5 to the M3, or will it
be the M3 to the cIII?..

Leica camera purchases are driven to a significant extent by non-utility (and
on top of it, it’s arguably a Veblen good - demand *increases* with price). I
suspect that most Rivendell Atlantis purchases are driven by utility (that’s
the nature of the bike), so no impact on sales. And for those potential
customers with multiple bikes in the stable, why not offer something that’s
likely to be *different* from what they already have?

- Max “who used the M3 plenty but just may go for the Neu-‘tlantis ‘cos the
roads aren’t getting any better” in A2.

[RBW] Ebay Outing (Mine): '95 Rivendell Road 58.5cm

2018-03-28 Thread Fullylugged
Lovely bike! Level TT!. What is the serial #? FWIW, if converted to a
650B, these bikes will take a 38mm tire w/o a fender. I've run Pari-Motos on
mine and now have Soma Express (which run a hair smaller). This will make
someone a fine ride.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-28 Thread Joe Bernard
I have no problem with "it's not for me." I take issue with design critiques
like "I can't pop a wheelie" or "I hit my pedals on the ground" as if it's a
flaw that Grant should fix. Grant should make the bikes he wants and people can
buy whichever bikes work for them.
