[RBW] WTB 3 x 9 brifters

2018-04-17 Thread Joe Bernard
You'll need a doohickey if you're running v-brakes (I assume that's what "long
reach" refers to). I tried 9-speed Sora brifters with mini-v's and it was
sort-of-ok-not-great..regular v-brakes definitely won't work.

[RBW] Multimodal analgesia

2018-04-17 Thread Jay Lonner
Just wondering how others are approaching this FIDES requirement. Local by
surgeon is good for one mode, and ketorolac is quite situational, so that
leaves what, preop acetaminophen and/or gabapentin? If we're moving in that
direction, could we modify the preop order set at Joe's to include these
options?

[RBW] Quickbeam vs Roadeo/Legolas

2018-04-17 Thread EasyRider
Your description of the similarities between the Quickbeam and Atlantis makes
me wonder if my Bubbe road is in the same neighborhood, as it was designed
around a SmpleOne fork and prob has stouter tubing than the Quickbeam. It's
Quickbeam genes were a major reason I bought it. It's not "lively" but it's not
a slug at all!

Re: [RBW] Re: Bill's 57cm Legolas build thread

2018-04-17 Thread Deacon Patrick
Bill, 42 x 27 is an impressive low gear! On my QB, my low is 44x21 (57”) and
that requires some LCG on the steeper sections, some of them because I spin out
in the power stroke on the loose stuff. With my 38 x 22 (47”) gear on Shadowfax
I get up those just fine, though that’s also with a wider tire. I find the 34 x
22 (42”) gear too low, but figure it’ll come in handy when climbing
bikepacking. Grin. Not that this says anything, but when there are “sponsored”
riders on “real” mountain bikes, they spin up those when I walk them and I’m
often moving faster than them and I often pass them soon after. I love your
approach of it’s a challenge not a constraint! Enjoy!

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Long Rides to Nowhere: promotional video by SFR

2018-04-17 Thread Metin Uz
I have done the Adventure Series rides. They are all challenging, but I
found the 200k and the 600k to be hardest for different reasons.

The 200k has a lot of technical dirt sections, and much opportunity to make
up time if you approach the dirt sections with caution, as I have.

The 600k used to be held in June to take advantage of longer daylight. The
heat and the remote locations became a real issue, so now the brevets are
held in distance order. So less of an issue with heat, but more riding at
night. Some riders ride through, most sleep for a few hours in either
shared rooms or get their own room. For local riders, this ride can be
compared to riding Devil Mountain Double and Terrible Two on successive
days, with the added difficulty of heavier bikes and no support.

In contrast, the 300k is relatively easy, and should be within reach of
most riders who can ride a double century. The dirt sections are relatively
short and not too technical. The 400k has a lot of climbing, some of it
steep, and chances are you will be riding all night.

Great medium size olive canvas Ostrich saddlebag. The canvas, straps and
everything are in great condition. HOWEVER there is a metal bar at the top
that it supports it and it has torn through the canvas on one side and is
working its way through on the other. This never hindered my use, I'd just
slide it in. But I it could be addressed with a reinforcing patch which I
always intended to do. I just ended up with too many saddlebags, so passing
it along.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs Roadeo/Legolas

2018-04-17 Thread Jim M.
I echo Mojo's opinion from riding my QB and Legolas. QB is an extremely
comfortable bike, handles well, and is stout enough for a load. Leg' is a
race bike, and what I find to be nimble handling, other riders occasionally
call too active. I wouldn't put too much of a load on a Legolas. I've been
able to ride Roadeos too, and they feel a lot like a Legolas. I notice the
slightly lower bottom bracket height, but I don't think that's better or
worse.

[RBW] Re: Prague to Paris route help

2018-04-17 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
Esteban,

As I am linear and pragmatic, I also went to Google Maps to look at the
route. It does not offer a cycling option, BUT! If you choose the walking
option, suddenly the route is diverted to smaller roads and smaller towns,
and it's actually more direct than the highway driving route. Occasionally
the route jumps onto a regional road, but not for long, and then back to
small, local roads. I crept along the route for a while, and frankly,
found it pretty compelling. Unfortunately, street view is generally not
available, but you can also look at the route on Google Earth, and zoom
fairly tightly into the streets. It looked schweeet.

My bet is that navigation would prove pretty easy, if you took small bites
for each section. Maybe possible to load the route into a Garmin, but
you'd have to buy the Europe maps if you don't already have them, but I
have to say, it's nice having a guide tell you how to get back on the route
if you have any time concerns. I assume you'll have phone service? I buy
local SIM cards when I'm in Europe... navigation eats them up faster than
other functions, but if you can find Wi-Fi you can load a new section
without consuming mobile data. You might even be able to preview each
day's route on Google Earth. Or just mail order paper and mark the maps up
before departure.

I wondered whether some of it might be walking paths, but everywhere I
zoomed in, I was on a paved street. It looked utterly do-able. Nuremberg
looks like about a midpoint if you wanted to make things cake.

[RBW] Re: Long Rides to Nowhere: promotional video by SFR

2018-04-17 Thread Bill Lindsay
You train for a hilly 200k by riding hills until you can do a hilly 100k
and feel good afterwards.
You train for a hilly 300k by riding a hilly 200k.
You train for a hilly 400k by riding a hilly 300k
You train for a hilly 600k by riding a hilly 400k

I'm only half being snarky. Each event in the series builds on the
previous events. Each event is the training for the next one. If you
finish the 300k and feel like you know you can't handle anything more, then
don't do the next event. If you feel up to it, bring it on.

Sleep arrangements are very personal planning exercises. This adventure
series 600k has a time limit of 40 hours, and it is my understanding that a
VERY strong VERY fast rider might have time to sleep 3 hours or so. On a
'normal' 600k, some people get a full night's sleep. Some nap in the lobby
of rural Post Offices. Some get a motel room. The Orr Springs 600k, which
is the 40 hour, 375 mile ride, the club will have a hotel room at mile
217. When you get there, if you want to nap for a bit, there will be a
place to nap for a bit. Some will arrange drop-bags there, so they can
take a shower and put on fresh clothes. It's definitely something that you
work up to. I've done a couple dozen 200k events and a half-dozen 300k
events but never a 400 or longer. That may change in the future, but it's
not in the cards right now.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs Roadeo/Legolas

2018-04-17 Thread Deacon Patrick
Quickbeam Hunqabeam here, so not what you’re asking about, but I’ve been
fascinated by similarities and differences as I ride Shadowfax (my Hunqabeam)
after riding the Quickbeam exclusively for six months. Much as Jim does, I
ascribed many of the differences between the then Hunqapillar and QB to
drivetrain deltas. Now, drivetrain is identical between, as are handlebar/stem.
The only differences between them are geometry, tubing, and tire width (38mm
knobbie vs. 2.1” knobbie).

Similarities: quinticential Rivendell smooth, stable ride and easy yet
responsive handling.
Differences: Shadowfax rolls over rocks and roots and even smooths out
washboard better, yet I felt the tire inertia for the first ride or so (now
it’s invisible to me). Shadowfax is more comfortable on the rough stuff and
with a load. Quickbeam is spritely and geared higher. Interestingly, my ride
times in the 71” QB and the 61” Shadowfax are nearly identical (though I donb’t
time things to the second — they are within a minute or so of each other). I
had thought Shadowfax would be my loaded bike, QB my dayload bike. It’s not
going to be that simple, and that’s a fantastic “problem” to have! Grin.

Patrick

Joe, you're right, I am loving this bike. It's early days yet but Ithe
first 30-40 miles I spent on it have been a delight.

Some of you might remember my query a month or so about Clems. It lead to a
long thread of comments. That was great - it gave me a lot to think about.
Then came James and Candice's offer of a reduced price full build on
existing frames -- and now I'm the happy owner of Clem Jr (which would be a
Clem L now).

James and I had a thorough conversation prior to finalizing the components.
Candice did a fantastic job on the build. The components James points out
in his blog post? Each one of them is great. I'm looking forward to more
miles together this weekend, when we head out for the Cycle NC Coastal
Ride.

Tim correctly pointed out : " it would be easy to fit a wider-range 10
speed cassette with just a rear derailleur swap (9-speed MTB RD), should
you decide to do so."

This drivetrain is the absolute highest range I would consider. The steps
lower include

42T --> 40T
12-27 -->  11-28 --> 12-30

SRAM 10-sp brifter and clutch rear der allowing 11-36 cassette

Double crankset 42/26 with front der

All of the above are easy mods. Gearing today presents an athletic
challenge, not a constraint. :)

[RBW] Long Rides to Nowhere: promotional video by SFR

2018-04-17 Thread Bill Lindsay
San Francisco Randonneurs hosts a ton of "long rides to nowhere". They are
delightful people and the routes are mostly delightful as well, regardless
of what you may think about endurance cycling. Possibly the most appealing
part of the SFR Calendar, and perhaps the most Rivvish of these events is
their Adventure Series, which is a full brevet Series (200, 300, 400, 600)
featuring a TON of climbing and long sections of unpaved riding. I did the
Marin Mountains 200k last Fall and it was my hardest single day on a bike,
without question. Bryan, who runs the Adventure Series, did a bunch of
work with Jenny to make this promotional video. They held a first showing
last night, and now the link is live. (yes, I did see Manny there) Please
check it out and share it. It's only 3 minutes long and I think it's
really well done. It features music from Ennio Moricone (the
spaghetti-western music guy).

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs Roadeo/Legolas

2018-04-17 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Quickbeam and Hilsen combo here.

When I go from QB to Hilsen, there's a subtle difference which I often
ascribe to the shifty bits (and wheelset differences).

But then when I shift back to the QB (like this past weekend), it reminds
me how much I really love the way that bike rides. They are set up quite
similarly, but the QB always seems a bit more spritely for me.

Maybe the Hilsen is an early Range Rover and the QB more like those early
Ford Broncos? I'd trust either to get me home over any terrain. But, I'm
going to drive 'em differently.

I've ridden the Roadeo a few times when visiting RBWHQ and would say that
I get much the same feeling on that model - more QB like - even though it's
never been set up exactly the way I would have it if I owned one.

I've heard of folks using sections of old tire with the bead trimmed off

[RBW] Re: Bill's 57cm Legolas build thread

2018-04-17 Thread Bill Lindsay
The weather looked lousy yesterday so I did not ride “Sal”. Sure enough, on my
lunch break I rode to the taco  lace and got POUNDED by a hailstorm. Ouch!

Anyway today was clear but cold, and I did the ~25 mile road ride from my house
to Riv HQ. Roman wanted to take some canonical Riv shots for a potential blog
post. I obtained approval from Roman, Will, Corey and Dave. Mark had the
morning off so I missed him.

My ride report had few surprises. It fits like I planned it to fit (perfectly)
and it rides like I planned it to ride (splendidly). It feels like a very good
very fast racing bike. We’ll see if I can handle the drivetrain. A 42x27 is low
enough for many hills but not every hill, unless I toughen up.

Now that Riv has their photos, it’s time to go get it dirty

[RBW] Musa pants for trade

2018-04-17 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I bought a pair of small Musa grey and blue pants. They are just a bit too
small in the butt crack area and am looking to trade them for a medium. A
little bit of a wedgie thing going on. They are in excellent condition.
99.9% new. I washed them when I got them, tried them on a few times, hoping
my butt would get smaller, but nope. I have never worn them outside. Anyone
looking for a small? My waist is a thirty, and the small fits fine except
for the butt seam.
