[RBW] Re: Cheviot fat tires

2018-05-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Well that was a comical journey. After all that discussion of what would fit on
the Cheviot, I bought the Byways and couldn't get them to seat on my rims.
After hours of messing with that today it dawned on me that I still have the
Continental Double Fighter II tires that came on my Appaloosa. Wire bead, 650b
x 50, I'll bet these will work. Yep! As someone in this thread mentioned, the
clearance at the front brake is minimal, but it works.

In summary: If you're looking for new tires for your bike, check to see if you
already own them ;-)

[RBW] Step-thru Build Advice

2018-05-08 Thread J Imler
Schwinn wheels are now 700c. Bike originally had 27" wheels in '86. I've got
Tektro r559 sidepulls and the 700c size has pads at tippy top arm height. Maybe
650b would work at the very bottom, not sure. It'd be close.

[RBW] Step-thru Build Advice

2018-05-08 Thread Drw
That Schwinn is cool in that it looks like it’s a fairly medium/large size.
Are the wheels now 26in or 700c. If the latter, you could do a 650b conversion
to get some width.
Otherwise, I’d go with some straight-ish upright bars like a jitensa or map.
Step thrus with drops always look kinda odd to me, but that’s just me.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis tires rec request

2018-05-08 Thread Tim Butterfield
I thought I was all set for some black Rat Trap Pass extra lights for my
Atlantis. But, after seeing Julian's very nice build, I have another
factor to consider. I cannot recall having a light sidewall on an adult
bike. I've always had black. Maybe it's time for a change. The light
sidewall tires sure look nice on Julian's Atlantis. Any other opinions on
this?

Thanks.

[RBW] Step-thru Build Advice

2018-05-08 Thread J Imler
I've been in search of a guest S24O bike. During the search I've come across a
steel Schwinn step -thru and a very reasonably priced Bridgestone CB-1
previously owned by an e-bike builder. The CB-1 rides nice and looks like it
could take about any abuse one could throw at it.

The Schwinn can only take 35mm tires. That's not too bad on hard pack, but
rutty rocky not so good. Check out the seat tube/top tube? lug.

So being that I've got the CB-1 in my back pocket, should the Schwinn have
drops or upright bars? The original plan was for 'tross bars, but with the max
tire width maybe drops would be cool.

Pics: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1luwPYjcxdDjbIGP91mufL-MaY0mDw7g7

I've got an Appaloosa with Bosco bars in the line up as well.

Thanks!

Yes! I have used my Medium sized Saddlesack extensively on my VO Porteur

closure straps get threaded under the front rail. No additional straps or
cords needed, and stays secure enough.

I zip tied a medium saddlesack to a nitto rear rack that I mounted as a

[RBW] Re: Has anyone attached a saddlesack to a front rack?

The Pass and Stow is much nicer, but also more expensive:

https://www.passandstowracks.com

Different attachment to the fork, more than just one strut so it's
triangulated to the fork eyelet, lowrider mounts for pannier racks, comes
in more than one size, etc. The Mash rack looks really hella cool for the
price though! Just not quite the same except a nice wide platform.

Saddlesack mounts fine on the front but looks a bit "off" - I like the
muppet mouth description haha

[RBW] Banana sax reviews needed. Stuff fall out?

2018-05-08 Thread Tim Bantham
I have a banana Dax and I love it. I use it in place of a wedge style bag when
I am just out for a ride. It has larger capacity then the x-small Sackville but
less than the small. As far as small stuff falling out I don’t feel there is
much risk of that. I put my multi-tool and tire irons in a ziplock along with
tubes. Every else is jammed in as needed. You can overstuff it because it has
the nice toggle closure on the inside as well as the outer flap. I find it to
be extremely useful for when out just riding. Way better then those tiny wedge
bags.

[RBW] Re: Sim Works Getaround Bar clamp diameter?

2018-05-08 Thread Eric Karnes
I had this same issue on a recent (unusual) 25.4 drop bar and a nitto 26.0
stem. Without a shim it was a hair too loose and yet the shim didn't fit in
the gap. I used a large screwdriver to (very) gently pry open the clamp bit
by bit until I could slide the shim into the space. I'm sure this is the
incorrect way to do it, but carefully done, it worked great for me.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot fat tires

2018-05-08 Thread christian poppell
Joe,

I've had the same issues mounting tires you describe. If you're using
tubeless compatible rims then you should be using tubeless rim tape. Its
slick and thin. Helps the bead seat better. Lubing the bead with some soapy
water then pumping them up to the max pressure will sometimes get them to
pop on. Also, pumping them a little then coaxing the bead into the groove
can work as well.

Good luck!

There's a top and bottom sleeve that fits a wallet and phone tightly, plus a

You need some snap ring spreaders:

You remove the bolt and gently spread the handlebar clamp of the stem

[RBW] Sim Works Getaround Bar clamp diameter?

2018-05-08 Thread Conway Bennett
I'm putting some Sim Works Getaround bars on my QB and ran into an interesting
issue. The bars are listed as 25.4 clamp diameter and I'm using a 26.0 Tallux
I had shimmed to run Albatross bars. No way the shims will fit with the
getaround bars and the clamping seems good w/out them. On the SW site it reads:

"Skid proof and clear coating are applied as a final treatment on this item and
the actual size is wider than the diameter on the each size description. Please
be aware of the installation of the stem, levers, and lock-type grips which
have very severe inner diameter."

Is there .6 mm of clear coat? Also they are not "skid" (scratch proof?). The
levers scratched the clear coat when installing the grips.

[RBW] Re: Friction Shifting Dyna-sys

2018-05-08 Thread lconley
You can install some housing inner liner on the part of cable that wraps
around the shifter - effectively increasing the diameter of the shifter.
You can hold the liner in place with shrink wrap beyond where the shifter
wraps the cable. It was on the Blug or Blahg a month or so ago. I don't
know if you can use a couple of layers of shrink wrap directly and skip the
liner. I doubt the shrink wrap would hold up long term rubbing on the
shifter.

[RBW] Re: Friction Shifting Dyna-sys

2018-05-08 Thread Jon BALER
I have a shimano 9 speed bar end shifter (in friction mode) with 10 speed
dynasis rear der. I had to dremel the shifter mount to allow for more
lever travel/rotation to get enough cable pull.

On another bike, I have a IRD Silver SOS power ratchet with 10 speed
dynasis rear der. With the standard (e.g. flat bar) mounts, the shifters
had enough cable travel to shift the entire cassette. When I converted
them to bar end shifters using Riv mounts, I no longer have enough travel
to reach 1 cog on the cassette. I either have to dremel the mounts, or
continue to live with not reaching one cog.

Thanks for the info on the 8 speed shifter working. Sounds like that may
also be a good solution for me.

[RBW] FS - Ocean Air Cycles Docena

Ocean Air Cycles Docena with VO Decaleur. $275 Shipped CONUS
This is one of my favorite bags, but I am selling the bike that it normally
lives on and so I am hoping to find it a good home.
Very lightly used, no visible wear or markings.
Decaleur is currently mounted to the bag - I would be happy to remove it
upon request, but it will be included in the sale.

The Weigle that this bag lived on, pictured here for size reference, will
be listed for sale shortly once I can move some parts around.
