[RBW] Re: Canti Sam Hillborne: No Cable Hangers

2018-05-11 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
We have cable hangers, diff kinds front and rear..it's just (now) one of
the things you pick. When we included short adjustables, people wanted long
ones, and vice versa. So now you just get the one you want, you plunk out
$10 or whatever it is, and everybody happy, unless you think it should be
included. (We'll trade one for your bottom bracket, ha. And seat post ha
and headset, and all those rack boss and bottle boss bolts, which so many
frames don't come with, ha. Ha.)
V vs Canti
They both WORK. V-brakes have a rep for being harder to modulate, but
modulation is in the hand muscles and brain waves, not the lever. It's like
saying "power brakes make me skid." You get used to them quick. I used to
dis V-brakes, but then...man, it's really hard to once you've used them in
stressy downhills. I like the looks of cantilevers, and I'd go with cantis
on Sams or 42mm tires or smaller (or thereabouts, it's not a hard line).
But for fatties, V's. Not hands down, but yes, they'd be my first. And
they're so easy to ... deal with, in the way that you deal with brakes.
The new Dia-Compe cantis and the Shimano CX-50, and Paul's are all good,
too.

The rear cable hanger absence: It makes sense to HAVE it if you use
cantilevers, but if you have V-brakes it goes unused, and since Nitto makes
such great little cable hangers. I think the tiny rear NITTO hangers are
some of the neatest things NITTO makes. They put so much work into such
small parts and make them look so good. I'm not winning any of these
arguments, but they aren't winnable on either side. It's just a style
thing, and all options are good!

[RBW] FS: Nigel Smythe saddlebag, medium?

2018-05-11 Thread Joe Bernard
Just got this from Ebay advertised as near-new and looks it. Also advertised as
large which is either incorrect, or I'm just used to gigantic Sackvilles now.
It looked grey in the ad, but is actually tan and I shoulda just bought a
grid-grey Large SaddleSack from Riv instead of messing with this.

So let's call it medium, the one pic with flash shows the tan, that's what it
looks like live in color. I paid $165 all in so that's what I'm asking as a
shipped price to you. Or best offer!

Re: [RBW] GDMBR with Adventure Cycling

2018-05-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Excellent bike, excellent kit, and excellent advventure plan, Bill! I’ve ridden
the southern 200+ miles of the Great Divide MTB trail in Colorado. It was my
first bigger trip with my Hunqapillar and we had a blast! I found my 50mm
Schwalbe Duremes a stiff ride and doing it again would ride a bigger, less
stiff tire. What that might be would depend on what I wanted in flat protection
(I’d likely go with Orange Sealant in my tubes and ride my ThunderBurt 1.2”
liteskins). I also learned since then that a lighter, tighter load is much
easier to ride all day, day in day out. Fatigue from intangables is greatly
reduced when bike handling is lighter and tighter. The trick, of course, is to
bring what you need and only two things you don’t. Grin. I also found I prefer
my front wheel free of gear, which makes weighting and unweighting it as needed
in nclimbs and descents far easier, as well as LCG (lowest common gear). Feel
free to holler off group if you have any questions.

With abandon,
Patrick

Excellent! Great bike. Have fun.-Original Message-
From: Bill Schairer

Subject: [RBW] GDMBR with Adventure Cycling

Just received final confirmation (on my 65th birthday) from AC that our tour from Banff to Whitefish on the GDMBR is officially a go. I have been excitedly prepping myself and my Atlantis for this adventure. Hanging from the frame will be:

Bruce Gordon front and rear racks
VO decaleur front rack
3 cheapo/clearance water bottle cages from Nashbar
B17 saddle, very well broken in and so comfortable
Sugino triple 46/36/24
Shimano A530 pedals (spd one side, platform the other)
Suntour Cyclone FD
Suntour VGT RD
Suntour bar-end friction shifters
Shimano HG-400-9 12-36 cassette
Crane Creek brake levers on Specialized 40mm drop bars (swapped from stoker position on tandem for Albastache)
Shimano cantilever brakes
Deore LX 32/36 hubs laced by RL to Velocity Synergy 700C rims
Schwalbe Mondial 50mm tires (measure at 47-48 @ 40 psi on the Velocity rims)

I’ve decided against fenders because clearance is so tight, I am not sure I can fit them in the bike box, it will simplify break down and reassembly (which I’ll be doing myself), and it will reduce toe overlap. I may decide to borrow 40 hole, White Industries, Velocity Dyad front wheel from tandem but probably not. I’ll box the bike myself in a Bikeflights cardboard box and check for $25 on Alaskan Airlines.
May opt for a smaller water bottle on the bottom - that’s pretty tight. 40+ year old Kirtland handlebar bag, Beckman front and rear panniers. I suspect there will be some modifications yet as I ride and fiddle. Certainly, this is no UL rig but I can and have lifted it over obstacles as much as 2 ft high.  Maybe I'll be lucky and get a "whatever it takes" comment.
I have plenty of touring experience but do not have a lot of off-pavement experience. I have been doing some practicing here in San Diego to try to get ready. I have successfully taken this unloaded up a about half-mile 15-22% gravel grade but only made it up about half way on my one and only loaded attempt. Pushing the rest of the way was no picnic. I will try again doubtlessly. I’m a little concerned about climbs like this at altitude but one way or another, I’ll manage. Interestingly (to me), I’ve found riding loaded on gravel is easier for me (except for steepest grades) than unloaded. I don’t have to concentrate so much on keeping my weight back or worry about lifting the front wheel. The load also seems to smooth out the rough a bit and the ride feels more stable to me. It is harder to correct my line if I lose it though, especially climbing.

As excited as I am, my wife is a bit peeved as I start on her birthday. I’ve tried to explain that this is when the tour is offered so there really wasn’t any choice and I’m getting to the point in life where I have to stop dreaming of doing these things and just do them.

Oh, and other RBW content, MUSA pants will double as my off bike pants and rain/wind pants. My wife even gave me another pair for my birthday because she knows I like them so much. Sorry for the length of post but I’m excited!Unloaded and loaded (projected) attached?

Bill

I am not picturing the bottle so I cannot say other than throw the top in
the dishwasher if you have one.

Otherwise, bottles that have the squeeze valve like Camelback Podium and
the SBI Purist are very nice. They never leak and all you do is open your
mouth and squeeze, no mouth contact ever needed.

Nicely done. Glad to see I'm not the only one that obsesses over geometry
charts. Now if that frame had a 72 degree STA, I'd be really, really
interested. But then, the reach or front-center would be compromised...

[RBW] Re: Is the Surly Bridge Club a Disc-braked Hunqapillar?

2018-05-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
Christopher Cote asked how I did the math and which size is Large in my
book.

I'm calling the 53cm a Large. I thought I picked that up from Mike's blog
posts earlier. Maybe I made it up. 53cm. I came up with the front center
number just using math. You don't need fork length because you have stack
and drop. Here's the math, step by step (I round to the nearest mm at each
step here just so it's less confusing)

1. define a coordinate system with the BB center at (0mm,0mm)
2. the Stack and reach define a point at the top of the head tube center
(391,614)
3. Walk down to the bottom of the head tube because he gives you head tube
length and head tube angle (447,443)
4. From that point at 3, there are two vectors that make the fork. There's
the effective length along the head tube angle and there's the offset
perpendicular to the head tube angle. The offset and head tube angle
you've got, and you know you have to end up at a point that intersects the
line at y=bb drop (73mm). Solve for fork length and you get 408mm for the
effective length along the head tube angle.
5. The resulting x,y coordinates of the front hub are (630,73) for a Front
center of 634mm
6. Email Mike Varley to check your calculations, and get it straight from
his BikeCad drawing that it's 634.6mm. :)

Mike's BikeCAD drawing has the fork length as 395mm but you'd have to add
in a headset lower thickness. My treatment above does an effective fork
length measured from the bottom of the head tube. So my fork length
includes the headset lower.

I just checked the frame sheet for the Bridge Club and it says 100mm spaced,
9mm axle front hub.

What frame size are you calling a large? How did you come up with the front
center number? I'd think you'd also need the fork length, which I don't see.

2018-05-11 Thread Christopher Cote
Bill, just a SWAG based on the reach, HTA, and fork offset. Front center or
wheelbase aren't posted, so I don't know for sure. Anything less than 620mm for
front center will likely give me TO. I'd be looking at a 53cm Road+. I don't
think I could be free of TO on any drop-bar designed bike in my size, unless it
had 26" wheels.

All prices below are before shipping--if you want something please send me

For payment, i accept either Google Pay (preferred) or PayPal. I will
leave it up to you based on your comfort level on the type of paypal to use.

And a few terms to keep in mind.

   -

Send an email directly to work out terms, posting a reply does not
reserve an item. I will not be able to reply to everyone, but i will

that someone beat you to it.
   -

If you ask me for a total w/ shipping calculated, please let me know
promptly whether you still want the item. It’s not fair to me or the rest
of the list to delay, if you need more time to decide ask for it, but be ok
with it being sold to someone else who’s ready to buy.
   -

After we agree on terms, i will send you an invoice, i expect/give you

may be delayed up to a week (ships on the weekend). I will let you know at
time of payment, if getting the item is time critical, please bring this up
   before payment.

Prices do not include shipping (I will charge you actual USPS
shipping)--I’m on the east coast so shipping will be less the closer you
are to me. Please email me directly with any questions, if you’re reading
via a smart-phone, you may need to switch to the desktop version (link at
the bottom of your browser), to reply directly.

Brooks Challenge Tool Saddle Bag, Black,

This is the small leather tool bag, i picked this up second hand and one of
the bolts had come undone on one of the straps, i replaced it with a nut
and bolt, you can see the bolt on the inside. There is some scratches and
wear on the leather, it could use a good polish. The straps are a little
crunchy and stretched out, but it still feels like it will hold.

Baggins Handlebar Bag:

I believe this is the pre-cursor to the hobo bag, it looks a little smaller
then a true hobo bag and the pockets on the front are different, this one
has 1 big pocket instead of two separate ones on the front, with a single
flap. Some light grease stains on the bottom where it got close to the
tire (looks worst in pics). Otherwise in very good condition, the leather
is still really dark. You can use this without a rack or decaleur (and i
don’t think using a rack would actually help) the bag sways as you
pedal--but there are d-rings on the corners in the front where you could
secure it with some twine, will work with drop bars the best. You can get
this to work with alba and moustache bars but it will require some creative
arrangements with twine to the brake levers to secure it.

---

Shimano LX V-Brake,

Single v-brake (1 wheel), the pads are nearly worn down so you’ll need to
replace soon, no pics but will take some if you really need them.

Shimano CX-70 Canti brake:

1 wheels worth of brake, pads look new and brake is in VG condition. The
link-wire is not original, i can sub in a dia-compe style straddle carrier
if you prefer. i do not have any additional spacers, you may need these
depending on the canti stud spacing for your bike.

Shimano Barend Pods Only w/washers:

The washers have tabs, which may or may not work with your shifters, worst
case you can grind

you’re interested in anything, I’m in the Washington DC area.

a message with your zipcode and i will calculate totals. if you buy more

make me an offer I won’t be offended, but don’t be offended if i don’t

leave it up to you based on your comfort level on the type of paypal to use.

And a few terms to keep in mind.

   -

Send an email directly to work out terms, posting a reply does not
reserve an item. I will not be able to reply to everyone, but i will
update the post once something sells. If i don’t get back to you, assume
that someone beat you to it.
   -

If you ask me for a total w/ shipping calculated, please let me know
promptly whether you still want the item. It’s not fair to me or the rest
of the list to delay, if you need more time to decide ask for it, but be ok
with it being sold to someone else who’s ready to buy.
   -

After we agree on terms, i will send you an invoice, i expect/give you
24 hours to send payment (unless other arrangements are made). Then i will
   go-on to the next person.
   -

Normally i ship within 1-2 days, however if i’m travelling for work it
may be delayed up to a week (ships on the weekend).

Shimano Barend Pods Only w/washers:

The washers have tabs, which may or may not work with your shifters, worst
case you can grind off the tabs

Shimano Barend Pods No washers:

Either order some regular square washers from Riv to use non-shimano
shifters OR

Order some

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Reader PDF Archives

2018-05-11 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
THere was a Zero, mailed in December, a warm yellow color and a few pages
saying something like, "Not sure this will work, but .." It was mailed to
3,900 Bridgestone Owners Bunch (BOB) members--kind of the precursor to our
current customer/mailing list. In the last year of Bstone, lots of the fun
good stuff there was sitting unsold bc bike dealers didn't want it (wool
jerseys, XO-1's..) and rather than discount it below cost to clear the
shelves, I suggested we sell it direct to people who did want it. So BOB
was formed, with a newsletter called the BOB Gazette. It went on for a year
or so, we sold bike stuff, The Song of Hiawatha, and the last of the
world's professional grade horsehide baseballs, and other stuff. When
Bstone announce closing down, I asked for the BOB mailing list, the 3,900,
as part of my going away package (I'd copied it on a floppy just in
case...), and boss said Yes, and that's how it went.

[RBW] Re: PSA: Tall 63cm A. Homer Hilsen FS on Hudson Valley CL

2018-05-11 Thread ctbiker

FS: AHH - 63cm

I am selling my A Homer Hilsen which I purchased from a forum member in
2010. It has had very little use. The bike has probably been ridden less
than 1000 miles. It is in very good condition, showing some beausage. This
bike has been replaced by a custom Bruce Gordon.

Parts list:

63cm AHH Frame & fork

Sugino crankset (46-36-24) 175 crank arms

9 speed 11-32 rear cassette

Rivendell Silver barend shifters

Silver brakes

Schwalbe Kojak (35mm) tires showing next to no wear (AHH designed for 32mm
to 43mm tires)

SRAM brake levers

Shimano Deore XT front derailleur

Shimano Deore LX Rapid Rise (low normal) rear derailleur

40 spoke (blue) Velocity Dyad rims

Planet Bike fenders

3 water bottle braze ons (Toyo built)

NO pedals

NO saddle

SN: AH0219

I am asking $1,400 plus actual boxing/shipping (Bikeflights). I will have
the bike packed and boxed by a local bike shop. You could also pick up the
bike in the Norwich, CT area (half way between NYC and Boston).

Pictures at https://www.flickr.com/photos/fosses/albums/72157646524496555
I have a 92 pbh and the saddle height as shown fits me.

Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Canti Sam Hillborne: No Cable Hangers

2018-05-11 Thread Garth

I recall when Riv sold v-brakes in the past and they passed on and
disappeared until recently with the Clem and mega long chainstays and 60mm
tires.

I wanted to try them way back when but the cable pull issue killed it for me. I
ride with reverse levers and no one makes them for v's. Travel agents to me
seem like a bad idea the way they bend cables.

I also find long mtb pads to be overkill and they don't clear frames. On my
post canti pads I cut off the ends of kool-stop pads to make them road size.

I'm so familiar with canti brakes setting them up, regardless of the style to
me is an "art" in that it's all intuitive, it just happens. Such is Life .

Myself I would contact Riv regarding questions such as "where's the cable
stops"... I'm sure they be happy to share and chat. Riv may have their
preferences as we all do, but they are preferences and no more or less, not
dictations. Universality is the Way of Life.

The Sam page does send a mixed message as the pics show some frames with a
front stop, some without. It is something that could be added to the print to
state specifically that if you use canti, you'll need cable stops like "these",
and have them hyperlinked.
